exotic and relax uh but i had a nice trip planned and you know what happened so the honeymoon didn't pan out you could still enjoy a break my patients need me it's not like you've formed lifelong friendships with them you have a revolving door of people who need care for a while and then they move on and it never ends so why should i so you don't burn out i'm not burned out you never took time started a year or two ago but i had a friend who went and it sounds pretty cool too bad you can't go i will try to go another time have you told him yet nope but i will uh don't cancel okay why not i am using my vacation time oh good when are you going anywhere fun well i'm taking dr lewis's place with the ariana solo medical foundation and i leave in a week okay why you were the one telling me to address to take me to some medical clinic or something no no not here yeah the foundation's still pretty young and a little smaller than others you may be familiar with but we still make an impact i'm sure listen i hope you don't mind but i do have the visiting doctor stay with me in my home here makes it easier leaving for clinics on those early mornings hope that's okay sounds great perfect well let me grab your stuff and i'll show you around thank you wow this place is incredible i know thank you yeah my wife ariana and i lived here this was her family home and when she passed away i just uh i didn't want to let go of the memories i'm sorry so the foundation is named after her then yeah my inspiration a lot of the people around here don't have access to doctors sometimes it's the distance especially those out on some of those less populated islands or they simply don't know when to get help until it's critical you'll you'll see we'll go around to different villages we'll set up a makeshift clinic for a day or two and then on to the next one sounds busy yeah well it's a lot of constant work and that's just bringing doctors out for a month every quarter i retired from my career to focus solely on this but uh honestly i don't know that it's enough well i'm sure it's a great start so how many doctors are here right now uh three yourself an ophthalmologist and a dentist in fact i think one of them's recently arrived from your neck of the woods over here this is dr solis our ophthalmologist oh hi uh charlotte hudson maya lovely to meet you too [Music] elijah what are you doing here no no this is our volunteer dentist dr seth adkins seth hi charlotte you two know each other yeah i uh didn't expect to see you here me neither i mean you being here wow good to see you the towel no it's just you've barely been there you're probably still jet lagged and i'm guessing things won't seem so bad once you get some rest yeah you're probably right not a bad first day right yeah it was fine that was one of the nicest clinics i've been to when i was in africa that was pretty rough it's mostly tense i'll get your new up no it's fine that's not a problem it really ain't holidays and things when elijah and i were dating and engaged yeah well like what was the relationship were you friends did you get along with seth oh i mean i guess a little um last christmas i was supposed to bring the dessert to the family get together supposed to i just gotten off a double shift it was hurrying as it was and forgot elijah's mom wanted everything perfect for christmas and was a little stressed i think but seth quickly spoke up that the dessert i chose was best served fresh and that i had called to see if i can make it there he covered for you he helped me make it too it was nice of him not just helping make it but saving me from the embarrassment mm-hmm so what did you guys make some fruit crisp apple cranberry i believe uh yeah and fortunately your mother didn't notice we used up the last of her cranberries here thanks so seth where did you go to um dental school i went to augusta is there anything fun you guys want to do while we're out here i imagine the snorkeling would be amazing oh yeah we should ask henry see if there's anywhere he recommends we're also right about whales and dolphins that swim through would be pretty awesome to see them oh can you imagine how about you charlotte anything on your must-do list no i don't know you didn't look up things the minute you decided to come out here no not really i i was more focused on leaving than little bit ah sorry habit whenever i have doctors here i try to make the most of it and not miss out on any of the clinics so how often are you having doctors come out now every three months yeah like to get to a point where we haven't come out every month but take a lot of volunteers to get and arrange a lot of donated supplies to hope for you know when i worked for that latin american foundation i found them on this medical charity listing site there's these organizations out there and they'll compile all of the medical charities and they'll list everything that they do how the average person or a corporation can donate or help how doctors can get involved all sorts of things really i mean it's up to you but if you wanted we could try and get your foundation listed with one of those sites i could show you how that'd be great really anything we could do to expand our reach here thank you maya of course hey audrey hey does henry ever rest i doubt it it's sweet though because you can tell he really cares about everyone here i think he still really misses his wife maybe that's why he's so dedicated do you know anything about her just that she was from here in the philippines and that they met while he was out here for work in a type of work uh the biography on his foundation website said that he ran or that he owned some kind of a tech company oh i i assumed he had some type of background in medical work can you imagine going from that to doing this all in her name losing a loved one can be devastating i guess so but at some point you've got to move on right live again [Music] can i join you um i guess it's hard to believe we're here isn't it yeah no i mean in a a place so beautiful not that it's you and me of all people here i thought you meant this second one i'm not surprised [Music] sorry so what made you decide to come here um well our practice is doing great i recently brought on another dentist to help so i can actually leave every now and again that's good yeah yeah i used to worry that my patients would have no one to go to if i wasn't around and now that's not an issue but why here i'd get letters from different foundations asking me to come help at first i just toss them in the trash too busy not my problem that sort of reaction you know with the other dentist around i'm finding myself in the office only three days a week nice yeah i started to feel guilty the timing everything lined up well i got a letter from henry's foundation a couple months ago along with a couple others i had started saving and you chose here yeah something about this place i felt like this is where i was needed was it the same for you no i uh i actually need to finish getting ready anything else to pack up oh that should do it how we looking on time well good if we leave in the next few minutes so how you holding up so far good yeah yeah it's nice here different pace yeah yeah the more remote we get the slower it gets in a good way you ever missed the big remember what the brochure said but it doesn't matter it's about the journey right experience bonding with nature and your horse great don't you like horses do you yes but i love all animals always have i should have been a veterinarian not a dentist i actually wanted to be a vet really why didn't you ah it wasn't enough now what do you mean elijah was going into a lucrative and successful field my parents well they never said it but i felt like they expected something more prestigious for me than working with animals i'm surprised you let that dissuade you elijah would tease me about the idea so i began to think i should do something else well you could always have a second career a midlife crisis or something ditch your dental practice and learn how to treat animals i could but being a dentist isn't bad besides i'd rather interact with animals in this way i have gotten a bunch of inquiries about my foundation already really whatever you did is working good is it mostly donations volunteers no it's mainly volunteers everybody seems to have a different availability though it's kind of making me dizzy keeping it all straight the foundations i worked for before had entire teams doing what you're trying to do all by yourself i have isaiah yes you do and isaiah is great i just i don't think that's gonna be enough well it'll have to do for now i just i can't focus on bringing on someone new i still have to make sure i can keep things going as they are while adding more doctor rotations all right listen will you just promise me one thing that as this gets busier and the foundation continues to grow take a minute every now and again and just relax breathe i promise i do try to fly back to the u.s every christmas to be with my family you do yeah my my mom lives with my sister and her family i have a brother who's on marriage number four oh and then there's my son oh yeah he's uh he's in college back in virginia so when you go back how long did you get to stay for two or three weeks then right back here oh but they miss you when you go that's always good to see the family and spend a bit of time together but i love coming back here just this this is home for you yes yeah how about you you're uh from new zealand yeah yep and london before that huh so which is home and which is the place you live um well i've lived in auckland for 15 years now and it's the place i live i think but to be honest i felt the same way about london so i don't out you have kids no i was married once before when i was younger it's too young turns out sorry i feel like i've got a sense of freedom now though like i can go to new places and see new cultures and make new relationships that's good yeah fantastic [Music] pineapple's big business lots of use for prutus and plant why no one's special has caught your eye i guess that's just it no one special has come my eye i don't know maybe i'm too caught up with everyday life get up go to work see patients cavities root canals come home catch a game with some friends and do it all over again through it all no one's really stood out so what are you looking for i don't know come on blonde brunette auburn athletic tall visit a lot of the islands so we decided to do it take a couple weeks let's go from place to place it was a chance for her to see her home country in a in a new way yeah we were on this tiny island i mean smaller than the one we were on the other day if you can believe it really and she started feeling ill just happened so fast still don't know if it was some bug she picked up or something she ate something she touched there was no plane only way off the island was a boat and she was just in so much pain it it wasn't an option no one could help her maybe i should have tried the boat but i just couldn't stay on the thought of by the time i realized that we had to risk it it was too late she passed away right there on that island i'm so sorry yeah me too you found a wonderful way to keep her memory light i mean you turned a tragedy into something good something wonderful it's got a long way to go still but i think she'd be proud of what i've done so far he came you were right hey guys hi isaiah elijah has a self-centered streak two outsiders he seems driven and bound for success and that often comes at the expense of others that's all over and over again growing up with him and if there was a problem i usually had to clean it up uh i'm not a problem no that's not what i meant i only mean he's moved on and not seen the consequences of what he did i wonder if the only way he'll hear him crying do you get many of these midnight cools no not often i have trained myself to be a light sleeper so when they come in now the worst is when i get a call and uh there's no doctors here well we're going to change that we're getting close thank you let's get everything set up i'll get the lights maya could you do the ones over there on it i'll wait for them outside everyone help me doctor stand on his leg at all no too much pain um here henry could we get more ice packs oh yeah what is it uh most likely a broken egg okay that's not a huge deal right well it depends on how it broke i i don't have an x-ray here i mean it could be a simple green stick fracture but if it's not i can't tell how bad it is or if what i'm doing is enough don't we just splint and cast it yeah well is it properly aligned it's swollen so visually i just can't be sure i'm just i'm guessing henry is there an x-ray machine anywhere on the island no not that i know of okay so you don't have what you normally need in the situation but datu has you and you have us okay what do you need us to do [Music] finish cleaning and stitching the head wound maya could you bandage his wrist yes henry can i get a splint yep i've got one everything's gonna be all right isaiah statue i think you broke your leg i'm gonna touch it okay ah i know i know you're okay i know uh is this where it hurts the most is it numb tingly tingling because you know that word [Music] okay that's good can you feel my fingers on your ankle here [Music] that's good we're gonna make sure you're feeling better i'm gonna start by splinting your leg okay [Music] okay nice and easy better a little you did well on those stitches yeah they're not so bad i tried doing that in someone's mouth doctor will be sore but keep his leg elevated for a couple of days we can cast it once the swelling goes down but i'd like to take a look at it on an x-ray first to be sure uh we can get a charter to a larger island with a hospital i can arrange that thank you henry yeah thank you dr hudson thank you everyone thank you i am just so glad that you were all here us too yeah do you need any help setting up the boat charter no no no i can handle that you all rest up hopefully there won't be any more excitement today sounds good all right see in a minute yeah you doing all right now knowing the datu will be okay yes that's the important thing poor boy you know it's just a shame we didn't have any diagnostics equipment yeah i know we could though you know well we we travel around from place to place but they make portable versions of most machines nowadays i mean not everything but take an x-ray for example what if we had had something like that there tonight can you imagine the difference that could have made yeah i don't know it sounds great but how do i get all that it doesn't have to be all at once we just will keep taking in donations and we'll eventually buy the machinery that we need and then that will help us to treat the patients more effectively and more accurately in fact it is a great way to help the foundation expand what i'm sorry i just i didn't expect you to be so involved why not i guess i thought it was asking too much oh you were serious about wanting to stay here very well i've been thinking and i think it would be nice for you to stay really yeah i mean you know you were right i i can't really handle a foundation anymore by myself with the incoming doctors and the funding and the machines trying to keep the clinics open on all the islands it's and and it's something i don't think i even want to try to keep doing alone anymore really do you want me to stay yes [Music] but only if you're sure it won't disrupt your practice or your life back home it's completely up to you okay okay help i was just happy to be working together it felt like the most natural thing so what does that tell you hmm i mean you think you can't be happy again but you want and deserve another chance i know but but what you're afraid of what exactly i'm afraid that history will repeat itself that somehow things will end up like they did with elijah and yet i'm also afraid i'll regret letting him go you understand though all i am is a painful reminder for you no you're not can you honestly say that okay it was a shock at first and it wasn't easy for me you know when i first saw you here i almost left me too i know elijah was reckless with your feelings and i didn't want to put you through more heartache the heartache wasn't because of you if if anything you've helped me let go of the hurt i've i've seen sides of you that have made me admire you more and more [Music] when we were at the clinic with isaiah's son you were my colleague but also a comfort and before that you've you've been the part of me that's been missing i try not to see it i pissed myself it wasn't possible but i keep seeing something in you that i didn't expect what you not elijah not elijah's brother but you i didn't want to dwell on it before but last christmas when you helped me i just i wished elijah had thought to stand up for me or to cover for me like you did you were a kinder soul than my fiance elijah did me a favor he didn't love me enough and i loved him so much that i ignored the things he did that hurt the people closest to him whereas you you go out of your way for people because you care for them and for me [Music] i do care for you more than i thought possible [Music] then what i just keep thinking what if we make a mess of things i don't want us to get hurt i am just as scared about that
