ah how's it feel bad it's a new year and you know what that means new year's resolutions and according to scientists and their calculators i am overweight i don't know why i said scientists and calculators like that i actually trust them a lot last year i tried to get in shape using video games and while norman reedus thought it was a good idea it actually didn't work as a long-term solution so what am i supposed to do now that video games have failed where am i supposed to turn to now i think the answer that is obvious anime in anime there is a long and rich history of characters getting stronger and faster just by wearing heavy weighted clothing or other accessories but there is one example in particular that i have been obsessed with for 17 years and that's this scene right here can you go get his idea and this fight scene where he removes his ridiculous leg weights to get the ultimate speed boost is legendary but would that actually work could you actually train like rockley and just wear heavy weights on your legs all the time and instantly become faster and sexier when you take them off i don't know i'm gonna have to ask someone who's more in shape than i am it's nice to meet you nate it's nice to meet you as well i love the headband thank you yeah yeah yeah this is personal trainer and anime enthusiast nate frazel he's from the app delta trainer who's also the sponsor of today's video but more on them later do you think that rock lee's weight training would actually work i definitely think there's a world in which that would be helpful if you say for instance do leg press and you only ever do leg press it'll make your legs stronger but that won't necessarily make you faster if i eventually wear 50 pounds 25 pounds per leg what's like the worst case scenario my biggest issues would be like how that tension is playing on your ankle or just the sheer force of this extra weight being on your knees and your hips i always try to help people save their knees and their hips as best as possible so i definitely wouldn't recommend doing it well i'm doing it anyways nate how would i measure something like speed or agility a good distance to track your speed over would definitely be like 20 yards if you did anything more than that other things would come into factor like your overall endurance and stuff like that there's a 505 test that's an agility test and then another test is probably it's like the illinois test it's another agility-based test the illinois test is a fairly common measure of agility in the world of athletics basically you have a bunch of these cones and you run around them as fast as you can you begin prone with your shoulder at the start line and then you run 10 meters to the first cone you double back you make your way to the middle cones where you do a slalom you slalom all the way down and then you turn around and you slalom back up after you've slalomed back up you turn around again run ten meters the final cone turn around and then your time ends right when you cross the finish line the 505 test is simpler and may even be more scientific since it measures how quickly you can change directions which is the definition of agility from the starting line you run forward 15 meters then turn around as fast as you can the time stops when you hit the finish line which is just five meters from the end and finally the classic 20 yard dash which mostly measures acceleration to top speed kind of like zero to 60 for cars but like for people so that's our baseline measurements for speed and agility and this is actually perfect timing for a baseline test because i had coronavirus back in october so i have not exercised for literally months you may call this unfit i call it an experimental control starting tomorrow for the next two weeks i'm gonna be doing traditional aerobic and strength training and i'm gonna do a second set of tests to see how much i improve right after that i'm gonna do rock lee's leg weight training for the next two weeks and then i'm gonna do a third set of speed and agility tests to see what effect there is if any so for the next 14 days i'm going to be training head one uh i haven't changed my diet i haven't been eating a diet to lose weight uh it's still weird i can't wait though that three pounds i'm hoping that that's like muscle we're back at the park i just spent two weeks doing high intensity interval training sprint circuits leg strength core strength aerobics it was a lot and today we're gonna see if all that work paid off i hope it did on the left is me after two weeks of traditional training and on the right is me at baseline which is two months without any exercise at all i should also mention that i did each of these tests twice and took the best time of both runs to try to reduce variance for the illinois test i managed to shave just about a second off my baseline time and yes i did kiss the asphalt on that second test and it was totally worth it for the 505 test bass lines at the bottom post trainings at the top and i managed to improve by about .4 seconds and finally for the 20 yard dash i shaved off just about a tenth of a second off my baseline time so tomorrow i'm going to strap some weights to my legs do another test two weeks after that and i figure there's one of three outcomes right either i get faster i get slower or there's no significant difference and actually there's a fourth outcome and that's i hurt myself so badly that i can't actually complete the third test all right this is day one i'm gonna try my best to make sure that the first thing i do in the morning when i wake up is put the weights on the last thing i do at night before i go to bed as take the weights off for now i'm just using regular five pound weights five pounds per leg so 10 pounds total i want to try out just normal weights first before i go ahead and make any kind of like crazy 50 pound rock lee weights i walked about a mile now that means if i turn around that'll be about two miles it's not so bad so far it's mostly annoying more than anything like i definitely i really really want to take them off i know some of you are thinking right now alan why aren't you doing the same training you just did but with the weights on and well it's because i don't want to break my legs besides we already know that training is going to make you faster i just proved that i just did if i did the same training that i did for the last two weeks the next two weeks but with the weights on i wouldn't know if i got faster because of the training or because of the weights so i'm trying to control those variables i want to see what the weights by themselves would do or not do you know like like like we're doing science or whatever so for the next two weeks i'm not going to be doing any kind of aerobic training i'm going to be going on walks i'm going to be doing stretches but i'm not going to be sprinting i'm not going to be jogging i'm just going to be walking and doing whatever it is i would normally do but just a little heavier i woke up yesterday put the weights on and after like two hours there's just a shooting pain going down my right leg on the outside the tendony bit i think it was a bit of a cute hamstring tendonitis so i iced it had some bed rest today i'm going down to three pounds of leg i wanted to wear the full 50 pounds for at least a week and i'm thinking now i'm gonna have to ramp up a little bit slower for smaller chunks of time so today i'm still walking a little less than a mile and i'm aiming to keep this reduced weight on for about eight hours [Music] they're very very light my legs are very very light now i mean i don't think that this is gonna last probably all placebo effect but i feel like you know like when you put a like mittens on a cat and it has to learn how to walk again i feel i feel like i got some kitten mittens going on something that i should have controlled for better is diet now when i was doing aerobic exercises i wasn't really watching when i was eating and that's probably why i gained weight but now that i've got weights on both my legs i'm cooking more i'm watching what i'm eating and i really should have done the same diet for both parts of the experience that's my best other than that things are actually going really well like the 10 pound weights on my legs feel like the five pound weights back when i first started so it's getting easier something is happening i don't know if it's because my legs are actually getting stronger if i'm just getting used to the movements but i think i can move on to the full 50 pound weights i'm so tired so why 50 pounds well some astrophysics nerd on reddit calculated that to make dust plumes this big on impact rockley's leg weights would each have to weigh an astounding 10 000 pounds whenever there's heavy stuff in anime it's always way heavier than physically possible but i want to do this justice so i found a 50 pound bot on ebay of the densest heaviest most cost efficient substance i could and this is what 50 pounds of scrap tungsten carbide looks like and it only cost me 300 but when you compare that to the price of pure tungsten it's actually a deal tungsten carbide is 19 less dense than pure tungsten but is still 38 percent more dense than solid lead i want to make these weights as close as possible to what we see in the anime and rock lee's weights look like a series of pouches filled with magic anime substance or animanium for short so i'm gonna use nylon ammo pouches because they're designed to be tough and modular it should be pretty easy to connect eight of them together and they ought to be able to hold a few pounds each okay first impressions can you see this sweat that's all over my face here's uh 25 pounds on each leg there wasn't any way i was going to be able to support 25 pounds on my legs without additional support so we've got this safety harness and that's what's actually holding the weights up they're actually on my legs though so just walking around oh god even a little bit is so much worse i mean who to thunk it 50 pounds is actually more than twice of 20. i'm i don't i think the first day with these two hours i'm gonna try and do two hours and i'm just gonna try and double that every day until i get to a full day but this is i'm drenched with sweat right now just from standing and talking and like hobbling around so i don't know i don't know if this is gonna work guys i'm doing it i'm wearing the weights i still need to trim all the excess nylon strapping also i took out the weights of the original ankle weights just to use as like uh things to stabilize all the straps and stuff and this makes it easier to sit down with these because that's what i'm mostly doing is sitting i don't know if i can properly express how much this sucks right now my legs are so heavy right now i weigh over 260 pounds and as it turns out um i my day-to-day life now is mostly watching comets in oyaba and answering emails and i'm essentially just getting up for the essentials so the real issue here like 10 additional pounds i can walk two miles fine 50 additional pounds and now i just don't want to go anywhere but i know that's not like in the spirit of what i'm testing here so um i'm gonna i'm gonna try and get a little help to sort of force myself to be more active outside one side effect is my knees are no longer shaking like i was 12 sneaking out the classroom by the back door [Music] your weights in no i met up i ran around this course here kyle has actually made a real version of goku's weighted clothing from dragon ball overall he's wearing more weights but it's distributed differently so his legs are only 12 pounds a piece tried to do a pull-up i think i uh tore one of my intercostal muscles in between my ribs doing that oh geez that doesn't sound healthy what's the hardest part about the leg weights it's just existing in them because like you can sit down at them but it's still like on you you know so you can't even get any respite what like training training are you doing to make your legs stronger with weights just walking around hanging out with goku taking bets right now which one of us is going to win this foot race is your mark [Laughter] he couldn't handle my super saiyan prowess oh my weights are coming out of my pants oh my weights are coming out of my pants oh they're hurting my ankles i physically cannot run that's literally trying i'm trying as hard as i can to run and that's the best i can that seems pretty feasible yeah well maybe you did every single day for like your entire life baby i think you'd have to grow up on a planet with extra g and evolve there i exactly what i expected to happen what happened what that uh we had a great time and got really in shape tiny muscles in the human body are not meant to be stressed by a sudden and dramatic increase in mass that it's a recipe for injury hold on imagine how fast we could be running right now if we took the weights off that's like the whole point how does it feel bad i know like a small percent of people are gonna be like oh ellen you you didn't use enough weights you used too many weights you didn't train right you should have done this you should have done that but you know what for the rest of you i'm doing this because i love you because i love anime and apparently because i hate myself all right you're good to take them off alan but xylitan you said to only take these weights off if i was protecting mayhem i'm gonna take them off i'm gonna take them off oh oh how's it feel oh good very good oh is this what taking a brawl feels like this feels amazing oh oh man it's so much better okay i'm gonna be honest i thought my legs are gonna feel a lot lighter than they do honestly they just feel really tired now i can move much faster hey hello hi alan pam the editor man here just want to remind you i only wore those weights for two weeks and i'm still lucky i didn't get hurt and i'm working with nate now to d train my body so i can get used to my legs being normally weighted again basically no matter what the results are you gotta promise me that you're not gonna try this yourself allen brain smooth only allen test anime with that being said the original question would wearing rock lee's leg weights actually make you run faster the answer is yes it totally would for the 505 test rockley on the top ends up beating regular training by a respectable 0.3 seconds in the 20-yard dash rockley squeaks ahead by a tenth of a second but that's also the amount of improvement that we saw from baseline to regular exercise and then there's the illinois test now when i was running this after taking the weights off my legs honestly felt awkward and uncoordinated and i could swear that i was not doing as well as before but when you look at the results i actually improved by over one second compared to regular exercise so what are we supposed to make of these results especially since it seems like wearing heavy weights on your legs and doing nothing is kind of just as good as regular exercise except when you consider that when i was doing traditional training i was working out about 30 or 60 minutes a day i had three rest days in two weeks so that means in total i exercised for about eight hours when i was wearing leg weights cumulatively human i had heavy leg weights on for 96 hours in that sense not only is it not as effective to just wear weights on your legs instead of exercising it's over 90 percent less effective now for a character like rockley who we know is willing to risk bodily harm in order to get stronger at any cost his wearing ridiculous leg weights in conjunction with training like a normal ninja probably gives him greater results than just normal training alone but with an increased risk of injury and discomfort which is actually exactly what we see in the anime and i know i know that there's going to be arguments in the comments my recommendation to you is just to sit back relax and enjoy the storm below as for me i'm convinced i saw it i lived it now i know anime is real and i now weigh [Music] what
