be taking a closer look at sure of Todoroki squirt half hot half cold hold on each autumn lose it Hyundai humming heat across each night in West Show don't Todoroki has both cryo Kinesis and pyrokinesis which means you can control both ice and fire from the right and left side of his body respectively shoulders quirk might actually be my favorite work from a physics point of view because to me it makes a lot more sense than just pyrokinesis or cryo Kinesis alone a character with pyrokinesis like the Human Torch or endeavour can generate massive heat in flames from their body but that energy has to come from somewhere in the book secret science of superheroes it's calculated that Johnny Storm has to expend over 3,000 food calories a second to maintain his full body flame on stick where his entire body is on fire I ballpark that endeavour has about a third of his body totally covered by flames at any given time just as part of his hero costume so using the same numbers from the Johnny Storm example endeavor would expend over a thousand food calories a second just to maintain his costume or another way to Big Macs a second on the other hand a character with cryo Kinesis like Elsa from frozen has to absorb energy from the object in order to freeze it personally I like to think that characters with croute niece's can absorb heat energy in place of food energy so they get a daily recommended amount of 2,000 calories of energy a day Elsa just has to freeze about 20 kilograms of water to room temperature or about the amount of food in the average 10 year-old kid but once you move on from freezing kids to freezing giant ice castles the amount of energy you have to absorb into your body would make you more badly obese and then burst into flames this is where half hot half hope really shines as a super pump my head Canon says that schürrle sport makes his body into a heat pump the heat pump is a device that can move thermal energy against the normal direction of heat transfer now I know that sounds complicated but you're probably already familiar with the most common heat pumps around the house which are refrigerators and air conditioners heat normally wants to move from somewhere warm to somewhere cool that's why in the summer when it's hot outside in its cooler inside heat wants to move from the outdoors into your house which makes your house warm an air conditioner acts as a heat pump and a heat pump can move heat in the opposite direction of normal heat transfer so instead of heat going from out to in an air conditioner can push heat from inside to outside that's why an air conditioner has two ends one that blows hot air outdoors and another that blows cool air indoors it's literally half hot Pet Pole here's a weird thing about heat box a heat pump only has to move thermal energy from one place to another it's a heck of a lot more efficient to move thermal energy that already exists and I actually have to directly generate it like over a hundred percent efficient over nine even a common household refrigerator is gonna have a coefficient of performance of about three or four that means three or four hundred percent efficient so for every Joule of energy that your refrigerator takes from the wall it's moving about three or four joules of heat from inside it to outside of it which is how it freezes your carrots theoretically a heat pump could even be a thousand percent efficient if we keep that in mind and continue to use the Johnny Storm numbers for sure to keep this left arm fully engulfed in flames he needs 600 calories a second of energy to come from somewhere if his body is a heat pump with a thousand percent efficiency then he can move six hundred calories of energy from the right side of his body to the left side while only expending sixty calories a second that's still a lot of energy for a human body to expend to put it in other terms ten seconds of using half on half cold would be equivalent to about an hour of jogging but it's still a lot more reasonable than happy to eat two Big Macs a second and for sure to keep his left arm fully engulfed in flames it means his right arm it's gonna be able freeze about 6 litres of water a second which yeah sounds about right of course you're a cordless loser like me and you have to build a machine to be half hot kept cold so I'm just gonna put a flavour on this art and a liquid nitrogen shooter on this arm now shooting liquid nitrogen and working with liquid nitrogen in general is tricky the only other guy I know of who's shot liquid nitrogen from his body is Colin Furze and he had like a big backpack thing going on looks sort of bulky so I'm gonna try and make a version that's a little more compact and simpler here is a very expensive liquid nitrogen Dewar it's designed to freeze and transport animals see no we're not gonna do that today I've never worked with liquid nitrogen before so to see what's the best way to spray it is we're gonna do probably the stupidest thing I can think of this is a spray paint gun we're gonna fill its cancer with liquid nitrogen and see if we can use that as like a Dumfries writing all right step one gonna pour liquid nitrogen into the paint container it's crackling all this stuff's cold step 2 they actually space really good about the gun it's just slap something on top of that here is our final setup hopefully as we learned in the last dump of liquid nitrogen boils at room temperature so this canister is always pressurizing with the nitrous in there we're kind of like a Super Soaker that's always pumped up the top is a cryogenic temperature rated solenoids out metal exit control when this thing shoots liquid nitrogen or not controls with this button this is a cryogenic temperature rated pressure relief valve and that's going to make sure that this canister doesn't explode because we're not gonna have any explosions today note to ender smash cut into the explosion alright let's try this thing out nitrogen oh so cold all the way yeah okay look at that lid on there no explosion today alright we got a lot of leaking around the lid but that's not really a bug it's more of a feature because our relief valve isn't going off so it's under 22 psi not gonna blow up let's make sure I saw my valve works in three two check that out nice we're shooting with the nitrogen at the wall huh that is looking great so if we just take this and just bolt it to my arm here and have like a button on the back of my palms like like do this it shoots animation I think that's pretty much do it let's make some reverse toast mm-hmm reverse toast just like mom used to make my favorite all this very that's very cool Oh crispy this is fantastic I cannot wait to strap this to my body here it is ha ha half cold I kind of cheated with the half hot side this is actually just the old firebending rig but on different mount every programmed it's that instead of being punch activated it's not activated by this button in the back they both have the same wrist mounted button action so we are pretty much ready to test these out that'll be out in a few days but until then what's that I think I
