[Applause] esports you've heard of it but what is it they're playing video games for money big money they're well over six figures this industry has taken 1.5 billion last year it is something that takes an incredible amount of skill to be the best at up i didn't play video games if you hit the space bar you'll jump oh fortnight is one of the most difficult games to get started on i thought it was crazy that she was gonna compete in a tournament after only a few weeks of preparation oh my god just one more shot [Music] what's up guys welcome back to my youtube channel and on this episode of challenge accepted i'm going to be training like a professional esports athlete you guys asked for it so now we're delivering and if you're new here be sure to subscribe for more awesome challenges like this for the next six weeks i'm going to be attempting to master fortnite i will be trading alongside the coaches and players from the bumble gen g professional esports team and at the end of my training period i will be competing in an actual celebrity charity tournament challenge accepted my name is kristen otherwise known as kittyplayz i've been a video game content creator now for six and a half years which makes me an og in this industry because it is quite narrow i'm so excited to meet you i've been such a big fan of your work what can i expect playing fortnite so you're gonna be dropping out of a battle bus onto an island of a hundred people whose sole job is to gather arsenal against you and eventually eliminate you to be the last person standing what to expect is a lot of chaos and a lot of satisfaction when you eliminate someone and you know they've spent 20 minutes gathering everything up to beat you and you beach them and you know they're in their house like ah pure satisfaction hi i'm drew debris and i'm a professional four night player and coach some of the players that i've coached are zextrow wolfies scented as well and then i also coached moki she's a really well-known player on the europe region even though michelle will be playing with a well-known professional fortnite player i thought it was crazy that she was going to compete in a tournament after only a few weeks of preparation i am the least prepared for this challenge compared to any of the other episodes we've done so far and that is because growing up i didn't play video games you've never played the original super mario brothers no mortal kombat no guitar hero maybe once at a friend's house rock band is there a difference do you know who zelda is is that the um like the elf guy like a keebler elf guy that's not zelda fortnite is one of the most difficult games to get started on unlike other battle royale games you're not only focused on making yourself the last man standing but you also have to focus on building i'm not quite sure that she understands what she's getting herself into the majority of my life has been spent training my own body to do a variety of different things but this is the first challenge where i'm going to have to learn how to control another body a digital avatar we have a delivery from bumble oh my god this is so heavy [Music] look at those cords i did not know how much equipment was required to do this [Music] so michelle there should be four hdmi along the bottom [Music] and if you guys are interested in checking out any of the stuff i have here i have links in all the specs below in the youtube description and lastly you can't game without a great chair and bumble gave us this really cool custom bumble gingy white leather chair and speaking of bumble thank you so much to bumble for sponsoring this episode of challenge accepted giving us the gear hookup and most of all access to your coaches and teams while most people use the bumble app to find romantic relationships or friendships you can also use bumble to find new teammates for your favorite games if you guys remember last year i met ashley the incredibly inspiring teen mom through bumble bff and that experience really taught me the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone and meeting people outside your current circles to find new friends to game with all you have to do is download bumblebee the link in my description switch to bff and add your gamer badge to find new gaming friends near you and thank you so so much to bumble for sponsoring our content in endeavors nate i am so so excited to meet you and get to work with you we're taking the first step on a journey of going from never having played fortnite to being one of the better celebrity fortnite players in the world even let's set our goals high whoa coach nate has high hopes love it if you hit b it should pull up a little wheel the dancing yeah and then you can select one of those oh very nice i know the fortnite dancing just move if you guys just move it's all i want to see some movement i'm not seeing enough movement we are going to go to what's called creative mode this is where we're going to practice moving around maybe doing some really basic rudimentary building and kind of figuring out how the game works oh i see you oh perfect i have a friend yeah so if you left-click you can swing your pickaxe around whoa so w a s and d are going to be how you go forward back left and right and then the mouse is how you change your view w a s really if you just hold w and use your mouse you can kind of like run anywhere you want that might be if this is your first time doing wasd kind of like movement yeah exactly the next thing we're going to throw in is if you hit the space bar you'll jump i'm sorry everything is so amusing to me right now that's good but the most important thing we're gonna learn today is just how to box ourself in if you click the front mouse button you're gonna pull out your wall you're gonna left click in front of you to build the first wall without letting go perfect yep nice now you're going to click f for floor and then you're going to build yourself a little floor and a little ceiling oh i like this so i can just say that's the box if anyone's attacking you and you need to gain some composure regroup think about what you want to do you build a box where they're trying to get at you once we go into a real game which we're going to do very quickly here what yeah we're just going to go for it now that we know how to build it one by one i feel very confident but i don't know how to kill anyone yet that's fine we don't need to kill we're pacifists in our first game so hit space and we're gonna jump boom now hold w and aim for that little island oh my god i am not breathing over here nate what you want to do in the beginning of a game is collect materials collect shields which were those potions and collect guns and if we see someone we tell each other that's the number one rule of communication here oh i hear shooting oh my god can we hide i don't want to see anyone i don't want to see anybody go ahead and toss yourself a wall with the front thumb button build it in a complete circle build yourself a floor and then build yourself a roof beautifully done look at our little one by one here is there a reason we're just hiding here well you said you wanted to hide oh well i'm not the expert i made a door here how did you make a door that's next time oh my god we gotta move it's blue similar to hungry games in the way that they throw the fire at you if you're not bringing enough action in the game four amp battle royale has a mechanic in the game that is essentially a storm and the storm makes it to where games cannot last more than 26 minutes the storm wall continues to get smaller and smaller and smaller until it eventually fills the whole map all right we're going to keep moving the storm is coming oh a sniper rifle if you want that's not good i mean it could be okay i'm changing here okay oh my gosh oh my gosh i'm gonna be in it but it's gonna be okay keep running yeah keep going we're almost there straight ahead a little bit to your right oh it's gonna be a close one oh this guy in front of us he's he's building nice you're a sniper i knew it you had it in you that was crazy that was literally crazy so on a scale of one to ten how difficult was that game negative 50. your homework should be to do 30 minutes to one hour in creative mode literally just building one by ones ramps practicing walls and then four to as many as you can handle hours of solos will you drop in a loan per day per day copy that i'm ready for this i'm also ready to buy a skin yeah yeah definitely do it i expect to see you in a custom skin next time okay so i'm just trying to practice the one by one drill it's clearly i'm not good at that yet front a mouse mode to switch click click click after my first day of fortnight it is incredibly clear to me that i have no idea what i'm doing and after a lot of frustration i think i know why there's this amazing video essay by youtuber rasputin that talks about the language of video games that has been established over the last few decades because i never played video games growing up i never actually learned the basics of gaming pressing a to jump or knowing a red bar as my health meter is not instinctual to me and this makes the learning curve for newer modern games like fortnite incredibly difficult for someone like me developers design their games under the assumption that players have a basic video game vocabulary built i do not so today we're going to do a little experiment we are going to put you through a retro game crash course tina and i have curated some games for you to play surprise oh my gosh we have an n64 this is not the n64 nes this is the ess the goal here is really to see how much or how little i know and how much more i need to learn first game ever this is the game you should play i don't know what it's called but i recognize it oh oh i go hi mushroom man yeah am i winning is this mushroom good [Music] evil and good mushrooms very confusing if you ask me wait do i have to go claim this flower now oh no i'm a different color look at my outfit changed yeah [Music] nope oh my god these freaking turtles [Music] the first ever video games were born upon post-war mainframes that were originally designed for code breaking an early example is 1958's tennis for two a simple two-player tennis simulator by the 1970s the commercial application of gaming was realized in the form of arcade games 1972's pong became the world's first commercially successful video game and 1974's made war became arguably the world's first first person shooter but as computers became more powerful their games became more complex opening us up to hundreds of thousands of games across dozens of platforms and i'm realizing more and more how much experience in video games is cumulative over time in zelda i got really frustrated because i didn't understand the objective i am quite honestly incredibly lost who's zelda is that like am i zelda i'm so confused everything looks the same are you making use of your map at all no maybe that's why you're not good at navigating while 49 is very different from these classic nes and n64 games there were some similarities that i saw such as knowing where the health bar is the existence of the player map the heads up display a lot of those things people just expect in games now i know that there are like little rooms throughout this forest i'm trying to find a sword and it can't be anywhere i've already looked can we give her a hint it's not in here at all this is the lost woods woods and forests are two separate places are you kidding me [Music] oh my god that actually scared me playing the retro video games with christina and garrett actually brought up a lot of deep-seated embarrassment that i have from childhood the only time i ever played video games as a kid was going over to a friend's house i would lose in the first like 30 seconds and then just kind of sit there and watch everyone else have fun video games felt like this cool kids club that i didn't know enough or wasn't good enough at to be a part of so in days like today it brings that up all over again because i kind of feel like i don't belong and so when i play fortnite and when i lose really fast or when the person i'm playing with has to carry me it kind of reminds me of that and it just makes me feel like i'm wasting everybody else's time and i'm taking away the fun because i don't understand it and i don't want to take away anybody else's fun i'm not having fun nate said to me in my first training session that if we're doing this right you should hate fortnight by the end of this week and there were definitely times where that was the case losing over and over and over again so frustrating by the time i would figure out my little ramp or whatever i would be dead you've stumbled upon something that is really important and that was the time it takes to go from building to looting to shooting the thing about the human brain is you actually can't do two things at once but you can rapidly switch between things and so now it's just making the time between them shorter and shorter and shorter so you're gonna play a solo game i'm gonna watch oh and i have a new skin fantastic you did it it's like the hotter version of me also maybe take a second to realign your items in your bar i like to do one as assault rifle two is shotgun three is submachine gun and i drag them that way so that i'm always building the muscle memory of oh i'm in a close fight i definitely want to hit two for my shotgun oh there's somebody uh your assault rifle which is your number four item is actually much stronger for this distance uh four that's three oh my god can i count it oh nice he's got shields keep going keep going nice he's low beautifully done oh there's somebody else oh unless there's somebody else oh my god wait where'd he go i don't know so i've noticed that michelle panics a lot we're gonna have to work on that i'm just really new to this and everything feels like a jump scare in a horror film oh my god hold on wake yourself up if it went down always box yourself up beautiful and then you can take yeah you can take kind of uh think about the situation where did he go go back in go back in i can't move go back to your potions i'll build a wall oh it's a fast-paced game build the wall behind you make sure that you're not getting stuck up on oh there is i'm killing it you're getting a wall he's low he's low he's low reload you almost had him you had the cursor right on him but if you noticed you weren't getting any numbers popping up you were shooting the wall this has become a big part of my life i'm feeling muscle fatigue in my hands and wrists which i know people talk about but it i hope it doesn't sound silly it's very real all of the different muscles around my wrists and towards my elbow they feel really fatigued so i have to take care of them with my massage gun and icing and stretching michelle i want you to meet maddie she is our first ever signed fortnite player she's been competing for almost two years now in fortnight and before that h1z1 and a slew of other games she's gonna be your duo partner for the facebook tournament and she's gonna help you get to the next level this is gonna be my first game playing with a professional player i feel like i'm in an audition this is my new teammate so how many hours today have you already trained i just did a stream it was about two hours long but almost every day i would be playing six to eight hours zoinks i haven't streamed yet because i'm gonna be honest i'm scared too i didn't want people to like come to the stream and then just see me die in five minutes for three hours that's the content people like seeing it i was found through streaming that is so cool yeah i was working at the movies at the time i've been gaming since i was nine i decided not to go to college like two weeks before i was gonna move to my dorm were you actively pursuing like i want to be a professional gamer i didn't see myself as a pro but i knew i was good at video games but growing up there really wasn't like esports yet as huge it is now the biggest tournament up to date was for 30 million dollars and the average professional fortnite player is around 16 years old that to anybody is completely unheard of i remember the fortnite pro-am which was my first lan ever i ended up getting third in that tournament with my partner chandler briggs from the walking dead and we won 250 000 together from one tournament one day of your life you just like didn't have it and then you won and then bam bam yeah it was amazing i gave my half to my local spca and it ended up paying for the spay and neuter program for the whole year plus their entire fostering and adoption program so i was like over the moon it provides a place where kids have opportunities to grow their fan base and to grow their brand at a very very young age public officials and other critics have raised concern about violent video games they like the gore they like games where people's heads explode interactive violence affects them long after they shut off the screen lisa dalman was one of those mums she even threw out her son jaden's xbox in frustration turns out though tayden wasn't wasting his time because he's just won nearly a million pounds playing fortnight the saddest part about it is the non-supportive parents especially when their kids are very successful i think video games and esports should be taken as sports as long as they're doing good in school as long as they're being responsible and obviously balancing things there's no reason why kids shouldn't be allowed to do that oh god oh my god i'm down maddie i'm gonna kill them what the heck i don't even know how that was built so quickly [Music] i literally was like mouse click to build and you had already killed him the first time playing with maddie was honestly mind blowing it is becoming staggering to me the difference between novice and professional because it's a duo's tournament we have to work together right now i'm not really sure how i'm going to contribute to our team in our final tournament michelle will be playing a support role which essentially means that she will be applying pressure to the opponent while maddie is box fighting them while michelle might not be getting the most kills her playing her role in supporting maddie will help them secure the kills in the long run boom baby let's go start the timer something that was really really helpful to me was the roadie bros edit course shout out to the roadie bros that edit course really transformed how i played for me building is very disorienting and highly stressful visually i have no idea what i'm looking at so this has been really helpful to me to really like force me to learn how to do this stuff fortnite's really crazy because of the amount of micro movements that are used where it makes it this hectic scene but the reality of it is is that each player knows exactly what they're doing and the smallest of decisions are actually decisions that they are making i feel pretty good with building but in terms of box fighting itself i mean it's always scary in the tournament you're specifically just playing four kills so there will be a lot of that one of the biggest things that i'd say is just try to make sure that you're like constantly moving so like right now you're sitting still right so even just like clicking doing that it just prevents you from getting psyched because the more that you should still the easier of a target that you are oh yay oh my god i got somebody so in that scenario ars are usually for long distance i know i should have used the shotgun here we go i'm going to use it this time i'm going to do it right okay when you're jumping right you have to focus on their movement while you're focusing on your movement and then it creates a very very difficult scenario for you to hit your shots in so you think it's better in that close quarter scenario to not move yeah and then just focus on your aim has maddie talk to you about first shot accuracy no if you shoot and then spray right you see how like it kind of expands like that little circle yes as you see it okay so where it resets that's where the shot's gonna hit there every time but if you spray then it kind of spreads out a little bit okay it's not as accurate been training a ton trying to just learn as much i can about this freaking game and i log on today and this is what i'm seeing we're a week from michelle's tournament and fortnite had a massive update where the whole entire map has now gone underwater this would be like a football player a week before the super bowl finding out that he now has to play on a mountain rather than playing on a normal field like he's used to so a strategy nate told me about is choosing the same location to land at every game so i chose a poi called the agency which was popular because it was filled with a lot of high-level loot for weeks upon weeks upon weeks i memorized the agency like the back of my hand i knew where every single vent was where every single chest was i had every possible outcome figured out so when the fortnight match changed and literally blew up the agency i'm effed what are we gonna do oh my god i'm freaking out oh i guess that's what i get for putting many of my apples into one basket it's always good to have a backup plan in this game i think the craziest thing about esports in general is just the adaptability that players are forced to have in order to compete at a top level what separates good players from the best players is adaptability so my goal for the next week leading up to this tournament is just to be good no matter where i drop would you be willing to give me feedback during a solo game you could be as brutal as you want oh god oh my god oh my god oh my god that was terrible okay let me do it again wait did you die yeah i just died i just loaded it i know jesus like right here you're opening a chest and your back is open to almost everyone that could be behind you i know i should have built before i did that yeah even just placing one wall to cover your back you hear somebody yeah i did oh he's aiming down at you make sure your head's covered where'd he go where'd he go careful there's a guy also shooting at you find you okay what should i have done in that situation because there was also another person shooting at you it's better to just box up and relax for a second and wait for that guy to come down to you because if you kept running around building you're kind of running out of material and then that guy is just going to keep spraying at you and you can't really protect yourself okay i feel like i'm embarrassing myself oh no it's okay you're still learning i know but our tournament is just around the corner it's okay you've improved so much since we first played even though i'm playing support i cannot die because if i die i'm deadweight and i can't be there to support matt i feel a lot of pressure to be a good teammate to maddie this is her profession this is her job and i want to show up and be the best support i possibly can uh how is everybody doing today welcome back to the stream i'm gonna be completely honest with you guys i am not having the best day saying the wrong thing or messing up you know you want to kind of have this perfect image that a lot of youtube content conveys but such an important part of live streaming is the live aspect that kind of imperfection is so much more beautiful i feel like i usually hide this stuff or you know only selectively put it in our videos and today i just want to be real with you all that i'm not having the best day i'm under a lot of pressure and i did really really bad y'all like i don't know what happened to me but it felt like everything i learned went out the window i could do this tournament you guys can watch this video and i could fall flat on my freaking face and it could just be terrible i could i could do really bad and that's also okay because this is really hard so shout out to everybody who's an esports player [Music] anyways uh welcome that was super freaking dramatic i'm happy to be here with you guys so let's play some fortnite it was scary to share that with other people and i was really overwhelmed with how much support i received so if you were there for that stream it really meant a lot to me and it really made me fall in love with streaming even more the best are the best for a reason they put all that effort in competition no matter what it may be it's a big mental mountain that you gotta cross this is not a game that even comes to play welcome to the play apart together tournament series my name is ask joshie and i'm here with cat gun we've got eight teams round one they're gonna play as many games as they possibly can in a two-hour time period the top two teams from round one will go against each other to be declared today's winners so i found out today that calc is going to be in our tournament i hear he's very very good this is game three of the fortnight world cup finals calculator crushed it walk me through your strategy for the next three games shoot them in the head also he's only 15 years old my favorite obviously he's probably gonna have to still go with calculator because he's a fortnite pro but you never know like even if they're a professional tennis player they spend their free time playing video games that's a fair point we don't know if michelle care maybe they're fortnight prodigies and they just don't stream it so really anyone could take it down maddie have you ever seen a ufc match um i've seen a little bit there's always a guy that's like it's time for the main event that's this and we're off to the first game let's see how far michelle has come there's a chest on this end but there's a gun right by the stairs for you getting tagged up a little bit but she's using her cover well the first kill coming from michelle in the tournament hopefully that's a confidence boost for her going into the rest of it we have a good game right here michelle we gotta keep going okay okay okay my head is here they're off to a really good start they have six kills going into the beginning of the game oh that's okay shoot over peaks a little bit that's one thing that we talked about stay moving while she was going for shots oh my god there's more people sell these i'm shaking no oh no i might die i'm 3 hp you're not about to die oh my god somebody just hit me maddie what is this guy doing oh no she gets taken out from behind what we had talked about before is kind of looking from behind and making sure that nobody is going to take her out from somewhere she's not aware of the calculator showing up right behind his teammate able to finish off these last few people in the circle let's go ahead and change perspectives here michelle and madison michelle already has two kills this game she's doing a good job of supporting maddie where it's needed can you get up to me michelle yeah i'm i'm right here okay i'm gonna launch back to these guys they're on this boat direction okay uh northwest dundal river oh my god oh my god are you she okay gets taken out in jazz fashion whereas his teammate oh god she's doing a good job playing angles here using her cover relatively well trying to get somebody that is pretty decent player michelle does get finished but not a bad job michelle picked up one kill tag them okay just keep shooting at him if you can michelle doing a really good job playing support here even though she's not engaged in the fight the way that maddie is just her being a far distance away and taking these shots pressuring the opponent is exactly what maddie needs one shot on him all right this is a good game we gotta go find everybody else we can get more kills josh krumich and calc leading the day 45 points now and michelle and maddie actually in second place now with 22. we're in second right now oh my god i'm so revved up let's go all right we'll be dropping let's see uh holly hodges again yeah i'm ready for some horticulture some gardening has holly hedges the only reason i know what that word is is because of sims they now only have 45 minutes joshie to try and get as many kills as possible i don't think we're doubting that couch team is going to be in the finals but who's going to join him looks like michelle's going to be the pilot of the day we're going to be adding that to her resume from firefighter to ice skater to violet you're making me so dizzy hello my few people at misty oh another helicopter i see them they're inside the house oh my god i want to rocket launch them so bad nice i killed one down yeah oh yeah this guy's pushing out attractive can you oh my god there's another team here on down oh watch behind you maddie what's behind you you got this josh and calc are currently sitting with 59 calculator definitely a lock to get into the finals now it's between demi and duster michelle and maddie to get into those finals as well they're averaging about 10 kills their top three games is 10 10 and 11 so if they can top that by any means it's going to help them all right he's dead two more people two more people we're about to win tag just right now oh my god just one more shot oh michelle okay yeah it was actually an extremely close match michelle and maddie didn't quite make it they were edged out just a little bit demi and duster who just put it literally the last game we watched there joshie was the game that they were able to get the few kills they needed in order to make it into the finals and no surprise once again to see josh and calc oh we did so good we were in second place the whole time i'm out i'm out third out of eight teams michelle's first ever four night tournament that she's ever competed in nothing at all to be disappointed in michelle showed a lot of experience a lot of improvement most importantly that was so crazy oh my god we were so close to the finals you played so what like i'm not even kidding i actually played solo i have so much admiration for you and all of these other athletes for the amazing work you do i mean it's no joke like i was literally sitting here sweating and i was doing a charity tournament you know i mean when it's your job and it's your whole life
