I Make a House Call - Massey Ferguson 165 - Will it Run Again?

well hi guys I'm down here in the back 40 today you may recognize this View this is where I dropped off the 48 Chevy so uh down on the ranch so I wore my boots today this cool Old Road Grader needs something to pull it and that's the problem let me turn you around this here is our patient now I don't know the exact year but it's a Massey Ferguson 165. probably from the 1960s I don't know it doesn't really matter but one of the nicest old gentlemen I know in this entire world owns it it is the uncle of the man who own who owns the 48 Chevy um we're gonna see if we can get this running for him his misses they you see they have a long driveway and his misses really likes a smooth drive up to the house and I don't blame her so we've got to get this working for him again now I was gonna do a very in-depth well not in depth but a very um much more involved diagnosis of any gasoline engine you walk up to it you don't know anything about it there are just a few things that you can do to diagnose it really quickly and isolate what your problem is well as soon as I walked up to this thing they were very glaring problems so I probably won't get into that necessarily but we can talk about them now I'm sure most of you know if you're watching this you need air fuel and fire to get any gasoline engine to run the air is usually free that's not a problem I mean unless your choke is closed all the time or you've been trying to chase down Viggo Mortensen through the sandstorm but that's doubtful otherwise I mean and you take your air cleaner off you know your air cleaner could be clogged but if you're tooling around piddling around on something most likely you have your air cleaner off anyway so that leaves Fuel and Spark and I think we have issues with both of those these little loaders make it a little difficult to work on things but when I walked up to this this is how I saw this uh boot here you know well like a boot well the boot was on here actually and the spark plug is loose that spark plug is loose that one isn't that one was on so we got issues here I popped the cap off in the rotor they look uh perfectly serviceable as do the points I believe we'll check that out make sure that's working but we got a lot of issues with the ignition right off the bat obviously we're gonna need to get plugs wires I think everything else will be okay all right I'm going to take this line off the carburetor see if we have any flow I know it's hard for you to see that but we do not have any fuel coming out of there so we're just going to keep chasing this fuel problem looks like my Bowl's empty and I've got nothing this whole thing is loose okay well how much weight does that go it doesn't matter I think we have issues up above which isn't good [Music] ew let me get a bucket here okay yeah um if we got a little bit of sediment in the top of this filter I mean that thing is solid screens ruined so we definitely have a fuel filter issue I've got a full five gallons out of that tank man it smells so yellow it looked like a horse was uh well never mind all right well when I got here he had a battery on the charger a fresh one I took the Dead one out so that's good and I checked power to our coil I know we have we have ignition juice up to the coil at least I'm really thinking this is just a fuel issue and a secondary ignition system issue um so I'm gonna let that fuel system drip uh I'm gonna get go to town see if I can find although it is Memorial Day weekend so I maybe they're not open I know there's a parade going on in town and I may have to run to Tractor Supply about a half hour away um see if I can find a screen and a gasket for the fuel filter or the whole assembly spark plugs wires um we've got gas here I need to put water in it I really if we have to open that carburetor up that's going to be an issue but uh I wonder if we got oil there's oil like a lot of it okay we'll be right back okay my local parts house is closed for Memorial weekend which I doubt they would have had what I needed anyway so I drove half an hour to the closest tractor supply so looking at this but I may just get this looks like what he had on there this the screen was shot don't know about the gasket it's just better I think um this I think is what I want whoa clearance no amber light how much is this guess I could just get the Ford set oh I'm not sure how much that is [Music] but I think this ought to do it [Music] at least we can say it ought to have them plugs [Music] I may have to run to O'Reilly's to match those up okay back we go their billboard said now hiring Superstars I I hadn't planned on applying but why not we were having a round table discussion on what to do with the bad gas and the owner suggested digging a post hole and putting it in it I don't know um anyway I'm gonna get this cleaned up see if I got a wire brush we'll clean this fitting up slapper in the slapper in the new one looks like we're in good shape here so oh yeah I am finding so much that is just plain loose on this old girl that's a lot of our problem we'll get her squared away for them [Music] [Music] see if we can get this whole Marvel humming again here the old updraft carburetor I think before I get too carried away tightening those lines I'm going to put gas in it and make sure we get it primed all the way to the Bowl anyway the carburetor all right I believe we'll have the fuel system hopefully sorted out keep your fingers and toes crossed about the carburetor so I'm going to turn my attention to the ignition system let's back this one out by hand these were ud16s and champions and they are fouled like crazy as well all right had to go to O'Reilly's Tractor Supply didn't have the right ones they only had Ford and John Deere ones these are Auto lights 386. I don't know why I'm telling you this it's not like it means anything but I wish I had some Dielectric grease I might look around but I doubt they have it here usually like to put that on my terminals you know but I'm going to get some anti-seize on these threads keep the threads in this whole Continental block happy [Music] no I don't have a gapper either all right my spark plug wires why is this thing full of price tags oh there might be some grease in here got a boot we got a a 50 price tag for a coil and a 58 dollar price tag for a coil okay were they trying to charge me for here huh let's go all right all they had were three sets two of them were for Ford you know like eight in six end tractors and then one was a universal cut it to length kit I just got one of the forward ones everything they had had the right angle boots on them so that was just what we were gonna have um the one I'm working on can be the shortest one well the coil can be the shortest one but that's our coil it should reach and then the shortest one is this guy [Music] that should be fine [Music] all of the terminals and wires are seized to the spark plugs I'm gonna have to cut them off not to the cap though oh yeah that'll be fine I'm gonna put this stuff back in [Music] my rotor on now I don't know I may have to open that back up and fiddle around with the points but hopefully not if you don't have spark certainly see if you have battery power to the coil but my my next uh the usual suspect is if you have points and it sat here for a long time if if it's a vehicle that is very infrequently used like this um check your points you know get a little piece of Emery cloth or a points file clean them up because electrolysis it goes in for electrolysis treatments just sitting here you know they often get so corroded that they don't want to they don't want a spark for you anymore that is not a not a healthy spark plug foreign number four scared me coming out here I was a little worried how that thing felt but uh it came out well come on [Music] these front end loaders are nice and every tractor should have one but man they get in the way okay see if this anti-seize helps those threads a little better going in here oh yeah [Music] every single terminal was seized on the top end of the spark plug which is why this [Music] Greece is a great idea man can I squeeze out enough for the coil there we go why am I hearing sirens well we know it needs water because he drained it for the winter and I'm gonna have to refill that obviously but we're gonna give it a shot choke what what's the thank you what's this thing do thank you I wonder if that Bowl's not filling tap around on there thank you I put a spark tester on a plug wire and cranked it and we've got we've got Spark it's only a little bit of gas comes out of the carburetor which is a problem I don't want to beat this thing to death and I don't want to open it up either I'm assuming our needle is stuck up I've got a long pick here I'm going to put it up that plug now shoot I was hoping that would get me up into the bowl but it doesn't hmm okay we're getting very much closer now you tell me guys on these updraft marbles what is this is that a mixture screw is that simply a shut off I don't know anyway the plug didn't do me any good I sprayed up in there with uh carb cleaner um didn't help I took this out sprayed up in there kept on tapping and eventually we're getting clean fuel out of there so I'm going to put that back in now it was screwed all the way in but I have no experience with this particular carburetor and I really don't think it's flowing fast enough um but that's okay he just came by and asked if it was a horse would I just rather shoot it you know if I assured him it was going to run foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] well with the carb cleaner spraying into the carburetor she fires right off so she's gonna run um so I'm still trying to avoid cracking the bull apart the air horn and so forth I dropped it down a little and backed out the idle mixture screw what is going on with my camera huh screen looks weird anyway sprayed a whole bunch of carb cleaner in there and it was coming out brown and yellow and chartreuse and burgundy [Music] so I don't know if we or accomplishing anything there clearing anything out but we will put that back in snug her back up and give her another shot come on baby yeah yeah yeah yeah all right [Music] oh man come on baby change that a little I'm gonna have to start charging this battery pretty soon what is that odd sound thank you I don't know what that sound is if you can hear that loud humming sound in there well I fiddled around with this Marvel of a carburetor as long as I can stand and wasn't really getting anywhere in order to keep it running choke has to be on full bore all the time and the throttle has to be wide open she's just not getting any fuel we had at least a couple of loose screws holding the Bowl on this one's on the tractor I took it out just a minute ago so if I can't get these two separated without ruining everything that's gonna be it for the day we'll see how we just popped right apart before I'm ready here afraid of carburetor gasket is it was pre-shot by the looks of it so that stinks [Music] oh foreign plugged oh yeah [Music] okay that's free so we can get this to go through here it's okay I'm sure that was a big part of it [Music] I don't have any gasket material should have picked some up I didn't even consider it I could feel that coming through on my hand foreign ER around that especially where it's torn then I'm going to take down this information order a kit but for today I'm going to put it back on there see if it runs now I know this gasket we probably had a good vacuum leak on that thing so we'll see what happens time for me to play Oliver Wendell Douglas and see if this thing will move I actually don't know if it'll run yet but I'm hopeful foreign foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] well guys that's gonna do it we got the old 165 up and running again there is no clutch at all yeah you got about kill it to put it in gear you know so the engine's turning slow enough or the transmission and then the high speed high low selector you can hardly get that into anything but uh that's beside the point right we got it running I'm gonna order a kit I know there's got to be vacuum leaks on that carburetor because of that Main Bowl kit uh gasket there so I'll come back sometime do a quick rebuild with good kit uh good gaskets and he should be up and running and the misses should be happy with a smooth driveway so there you go I guess that's it thanks a lot for coming along God bless you guys we'll see you on the next one Green Acres is
