hi my name is Chris McLaughlin and I'm filming my very first youtube video on the and my topic today is let me on the Massey Ferguson 165 tractors and I currently have 3 165 tractors the one to the right is a 1966 the one in the middle is in 1967 and this one off to the left is a 1973 these tractors are very similar configuration but there's a few things that are different about them and this very first one when I bought it has a mount for a plow I haven't taken out off because it's really not caused me an issue all three of my tractors are what would have been referred to as in the high arch system in the day a little higher here in the front and the back entire configuration were either 15 538 on these slightly wider rims or a 13 12 or 13 inch on on some of the others which I'll show you most of tractors around here had the power adjustable rims and the heavy centre cast to add extra weight almost all these 165 in this area would have been used in the production of potatoes and they would have been really at those days pour straight to their horsepower limit some of the features about the 165 you may want to be familiar with if you're looking at one is most of them had an issue with the power steering pump it was a single function pump to run the power steering there was no filter inside just a strainer most people didn't dump the oil out and replace the oil and probably at the $4,000 mark or do the Aged what they would do is they would actually start leaking oil out of the power steering pump and they'll go down in the motor cavity some people claim that power steering fluid will ruin the motor I'm not a mechanic some people recommend this pudding motor oil in so if they do start to leak they can't damage the motor and some people with hydraulic oil in their that will help me a personal decision I'm not a mechanic another nice feature about these tractors is they have a dual style pto right now mine's a neutral if one was to push down the two-stage clutch and push it back it provides 540 pto if you push down your clutch bring it back to neutral and bring a forward it has what's called brown speed pto and the way that ground speed pto would work if you move forward and low gear number 1 the pto with just at a very slow speed will move forward and if you shoved it put it in reverse and started to back up the pto go in the opposite direction that was ideal in the days when we're using John Deere and International potato diggers if you got a rock on some somewheres sometimes you can just put a ding groundspeed pto move forward or back a little bit in a rock would pop right out say the operator from getting off the transmission configuration on all my 165 is involved a high and low multi power transmission and what we call the three-speed transmission reverse one two three and there was a low and high range and that was in combination with the pto if you're not familiar the tractor you need to be careful at the PTO transmission in low the operator had a little bit more power and a little less speed but there was no if you will engine brake if you start going down the hill no pto the tractor will just start to roll if one use the the the upper part or the high part of the pto one had a little speed higher speed but less power and you had the engine brake involved well a lot of people did they'd have an alone they would start to roll and then they remember and shove it up in high and that sometimes damaged the PTO so I don't recommend that I always drop my PTO my rpms down when I'm switching my tractors all came with this valve spool Bank I don't think you can buy original one anymore I did see video over in Turkey where somebody had a style now in order to operate this if you want to run your PT a-- or your three-point hitch this has to be pulled back the user three-point hitch system you can still use this bull Bank for remote but often when you're moving it back and forth your PT your three-point hitch will move it's kind of a pain if you want delve both axes to vote valve banks you have to have this back in neutral course to use it and on the other side you'll have to switch your pump to constant pump and I'll show you that when I get over there all the tractors I've seen in this area had these style fenders with the dual lights on it I do see some videos from in pictures from Europe and Asia where there's a different type offender the other thing about the 165 s almost everyone I've seen in this areas had some kind of damage to the three-point hitch system and to me that this came from overuse abuse these tractors as I said in this area potato country or pushed straight to the limit they often had a four bottom plow with either 12 or 14 inch points on them you know you hit a rock hard or get catch up in a piece of legend if the that the plow doesn't trip a lot of times a lot of force on the three-point hitch a lot of people when these tractors sort of retired from the potato industry ended up going in the woods as well and and that's not always the best thing for tractors my 1966 and 1967 have this rounded rear end and then it was the same with the mass Ferguson I grew up on a rounded rear end and just come over here three-point hitch controls this is the draft control here and this is the main three-point here is control I've got a stopper in here so this can't go back very easily but if you want to put in costume pump you got a pulled over and shove it back fairly hard that puts the pump on what they call constant pump mode and then that provides the user with access to both of these remotes but unfortunately don't have any three-point hitch control not the ideal situation in those days I did see another viewer on the massey ferguson 100 group talked about this leaking diesel into the tank I actually bought a brand new wine on these I was like a year before I got installed when I installed it right new out of the factory lick diesel into the into the motor so be careful when you trait change these I did see a viewer put a electronic version on here as well kind of neat the other thing I've done is most of 165 s I know I've come with a cartridge system I replace the cartridge system added this head and this allowed me to he'll spill us spin on filters Rick for the Massey Ferguson dealer this one came with a a Jenner an alternator scuse me an alternator but I think they originally came with a generator so this is my 1966 165 I just generally use it for hauling firewood and and some point hope to put a snow blade on it this is my 1967 165 we totally rebuilt this about two years ago spent a lot of money at that time almost all the parts were available it was a good time to do it parts are getting a little harder to find but as I've indicated all my 165 s I've had to replace the power steering pump I wish someone would develop a tandem pump that went on here so this pump could also be used for remotes because the pump in these 165 s you know they were built for the air when you didn't need a lot of flow and I wish there was a different design again I have the two different types of pto the multi multi power clutch pack and the same speed still same room valve remotes this tractor has a slightly narrower power adjustable rim on it and i was able to get a hold of some original massey ferguson wheel weights a few years ago as well this tractor has small slightly smaller tires on it i believe they are the thirteen point six by 38 you know now I was younger I remember farmers talking about different our tire sizes and the Avenger just have aged over them I don't see real difference between the fifteen point five and the thirteen point six the fifteen point five the nice thing about those there's a little bit less ground compaction but in the days when people are using these tractors the cultivate potatoes a lot of them one in a narrower rim I do have the original couplers on this one which is really nice so it does look as original as possible these tractors actually came with a toolbox that fit right inside of here I've not been able to source that from anywheres they were nice the problem is when the lid flipped open sometimes the three-point hitch arm would hit it but I haven't come across those original toolboxes for this style of rear end this 165 is unique in that it had a beside the lift pump it had a sediment bowl that could be reading removed my other two Masterson's don't have that and when I didn't rebuild this tractor I put a generator on it keep the tractors as originally as possible again I really like this tractor it's sort of my favorite tractor on the farm 1967 165 I picked up this 1973 a few years ago from a family friend this tractor because my driver saw the loader fairly I did half again replace the power steering pump on this one now this tractor is a little bit different from the others the earlier versions and that it has a what I call a square square rear end and this where an looks almost identical to the ones you would see in a 200 300 series massey ferguson i'm let's told by one dealer this is called the 10,000 pound rear end again like all them i've had to replace some parts on the three-point hitch i was able to get those parts from a company called a and i or all parts store this one actually had they sent the toolbox melted on the fender a little bit different design a little bit different design to on the differential lock all three of my tractors do have a differential now one of the sad parts about pyres in this area or rims these power adjustable wrench you can't buy them new anymore you have to have the manufactured and almost every farmer in this area loaded these tires down with calcium in the water which eventually arrested the rims oh I've had to have this one repaired a few weeks ago and I had the calcium removed and the tire on the other side I got to get that done because it's time for that calcium to go that's just an added weight added traction that was great but they didn't stand the test of time this one is missing the lights to replace those lights is expensive I think is $250 in the side and and with this tractor as well when I bought it came with the generator so you know I love these old tractors they play an important history in the development of the potato industry here in New Brunswick I think the local dealer who's passed away but what time I think he told me he sold 60 of these tractors in this area and one year and they all would have went towards the potato industry so these are my three basket Ferguson's 165
