[Music] nice to see you as a real handshake great to see you what a treat face to face i know how about that i don't even remember last time i showed you a bunch of memes and i think i nearly killed you from laughter this is tom cruise you were hanging on free willy there anyway that's you hanging off a cat that should be fantastic not gonna happen this time i promise maybe um please [Music] i'm maverick maverick does mother not like you or something let's stop properly you're maverick still maverick how the heck did that happen how did you get the gig back in the day well actually they were asking me to do it for about a year ah just want to serve my country be the best fighter pilot in navy sir don't screw around with me maverick and you have to look at when i started making i always wanted to make movies since i was four years old i just dreamed of like flying airplanes making movies of course i wanted to go to space years later i was making legend with ridley scott nothing is more i did risky business [Music] and for a year they were talking and wanted me to come in and make this film and i actually i was like okay i went in and i met with don and jerry they at the time and forever legendary producers and they were really cutting edge the biggest producers in hollywood flash you know just going on and so i was very interested in meeting them working with them and tony scott who had done the hunger and i'd spend a year with ridley in making legend and just seeing how this is extraordinary what he does i mean ridley scott and i'm just watching him to see to the eye and then go to rushes and see how on film what he was able to do [Music] i love that tony scott story of how he paid the admiral 25 000 with a check then and there to turn the carrier around to get that shot yeah i think it was a little more and i was there i remember we were there i met tony and and really and i it was one of those experiences i was like okay i'm gonna make this movie but i didn't tell them right away i said here's a deal and i laid out exactly the things that i needed in terms of i wanted to be able to be in every production meeting and work with them just in terms of my progression of education and 20 at this time yeah i was look i'm a precocious cocky focused guy maverick and it worked can i just say yeah it paid off such a seismic influence on pop culture from the late 80s obviously got the haircuts you got the bomber jackets white t-shirts the aviators where would you say is how can i put this the strangest place you've seen the influence of top gun in pop culture i have suggestions you need suggestions so we got how i met your mother lots of comedies broad city i could be your goose do not bring up top gun right now archer danger zone suits he's a wild card flies by the seat of his pants i think i can't call the top gun have you ever seen the film marvel movie captain marvel you ready hire further faster baby that's right it's got the lead character captain marvel she has a cat [Music] guess what the cat's name is let me guess thor doctor strange no it's a twist it's goose wow what's your name goose cool name for a cool cat yeah and of course this is a movie that even spawned its own i don't know mickey take films with hot shots have you ever seen them yeah of course what's it like seeing your pride and joy suddenly being lampooned by charlie sheen it's fun seems no matter what i do i end up hurting someone it's fun and i've i've known charlie since he was a kid so it's all fun and results in one of the best jokes of all time in cinema where charlie and martin are going i loved you on wall street i loved you in wall street why do you think there's been such demand for a sequel because i personally think you thought the first film didn't have you running in it and this film has the run on it that's exactly that's exactly as decades went on it didn't em it grew yeah i mean the studio wanted to make it before the film opened okay the student was like we got to do top gun and simpson brooke i were like we got to do i was like i'm not doing another one just in terms of my education and where i was i did not feel ready i didn't want to do it i was like what's the purpose now and as time went on it just every country that i went to in every language and it didn't slow down it was generation just for years i would think how do i do this what is it how can i who unlocks it talking about story and structure for years on uh it's like people come with ideas of terrible just didn't work at all in any way shape or form you read my blog and and i was just saying like this is never not gonna work i'm not interested 30 plus years of service there was enough elements in place and i thought if i'm ever going to do it it's going to be now combat medals citations only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years i'd lay there at night okay i'd sit down i'd write i'd be like if i did this how you can't get a promotion you won't retire despite your best efforts you refuse to die and i i spent years actually formulating the process by which i would think about making this movie you know because they're like just go do it man get a plan good we're in [Music] you know like no no there's a whole thing you should be at least a two-star admiral by now yet here you are captain what is that it's one of life's mysteries sir you know when i did first one i flew i had no real warm-up and i i knew that i wanted the breath of the film was more expansive so how do i educate the studio the filmmakers the actors on what it is that i wanted to accomplish how were these cameras and you could see an american made in fallout developing the technology out thinking about it on a side note i say i think you have one of the best twitter bios there is what is it actor producer running a movie since 1981 [Laughter] if you had to pick one of your children like this what is your favorite run because i think the one in this one is up there yeah i can't pick i think i leave that just thank you i'm going for mission impossible three that's what i'm saying what the hell are you doing in shanghai i'll tell you when i see you so henry cavill tells a story that during the mission impossible fallout shoot you were all in the helicopters towards the end and apparently you started you yourself quoting topgun and he lost his mind that's right prick what quotes did you whip i don't know sometimes like i'll be flying because i'm a pilot and i've been you know i fly helicopters that p51 in the movies that's my p51 and the hangar and the hangar that's mine and i'm flying with her so what's really amazing is that people will go and you know you're not allowed to talk on lines but they'll they'll they'll know that it's being the plane or they'll kill me hear me and they'll be like you know i feel that how about i feel the need i feel the need the need for speed or hey you're just here someone says uh you know tell your taxes like i might you know and then they just go on you know or it's like you know talk to me goose talk to me goose roger i got him contact 20 left at 30 miles 900 knots closure how about a flyby you know yes tower this is ghost rider requesting a flyby [Music] negative ghost rider the pattern is full no no man this is not a good idea sorry goose but it's time to buzz the tower i wonder how many people have buzzed a tower because of that film oh i think a few quite a few [Music] and i'm very proud of that why wouldn't you be do you think that iceman chomping counts as a quote oh i think so it's a meme it's a it really goes yeah it always is was there ever any draft of any version of the script where we saw maverick actually flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shits out of hong kong now you screw up just this much you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog out of hong kong yes sir third one yeah yes there's always time 36 years from now i'm genuinely not against that just let me take my time i gotta think about this same hotel same room let's do this trust me i'll be here me too let me ask you about mementos i know you're not a man who has like a whole vault full of his stuff from all his movies but there must have been a couple of things maybe the helmet i have the helmet the jacket is the original jacket that's the jack that's that is the jack he just took it out from the water the jacket tony scott had the cowboy boots did he now yes he did and he wore them forever like i would see him above tony you're still wearing he's just and you know he created those colors for that and not a sweetheart a lovely man and uh the jacket that jacket is the jacket and i still have that jacket amazing and the watch that i wear is the original watch but jerry bruckheimer has that watch so i had to go jerry need the watch for the movie and he wants it back as soon as you're done no no no no the second i was done shooting that day he held it by the way can i give you a bit of congratulations for i think the unintentionally funniest auto complete interview you know that wild thing you did where it goes tom cruise can yes fly a plane yes helicopter yes and there was a comment underneath that really made me smile i think you'd like it too tom cruise could be the only person on this planet who could fly a submarine [Laughter] i'm not trying to give you ideas for the next mission impossible but i like that i like that i'm gonna did you tell me cue that [Music] fly submarine into space come on now see now we're cooking see now we're cooking this is what nothing's off limits by the way speaking of mchugh i want to show you this little gif oh of henry cavill race remember the bathroom fight in fallout which we all love there is for whatever reason the compression somehow when he is cocking his arms to fight oh my gosh the pocket appears and he grows a beard it is i'm telling you we looked at that over and over in rushes editing room we're going how did you do that henry okay he is so talented that he can do that but he i remember the time like i saw that take and he did that at mcu i was like this is awesome this is amazing i wish i could grow a bed like i wish i could grow a beard like that i was like that and it happened but you had to play it back and you could play that back in slow motion i still can't figure it out no can i it's the wildest thing the best example of the magic of cinema i can think i know other than you flying a submarine into space tom it's always a pleasure yeah it's a pleasure thank you so
