you know i love nintendo i really do but it's becoming hard to believe myself at the start of the switch era they were really on the top of their game making this big old new console that you could play anywhere you go along with a pretty insane lineup of incredible games but even back then there was something missing something important the virtual console it was a major selling point for the wii and to a lesser extent the wii u having a lineup ranging from the original nes all the way to the 64 by the end of its lifespan the wii's virtual console had a whopping 427 retro titles available on the service and well yes they were really just roms the prices were cheap enough that it was a wonderful way to legally play many of these retro games without having to buy the original hardware again the switch didn't have anything like this until nintendo rolled out the nintendo online service where we were given nes games with the nes online app still really nothing compared to what we had before with virtual console but it was certainly a start we were given games pretty regularly too and you know i quite appreciate it i see vice project doom and get excited because hey i'm glad that i can play it on the go on official hardware and i'm glad that many more people will get to try the game out i can tell friends to play it and they'll actually have a feasible way to play it and eventually we were given super nintendo games which is great dreamland 3 superstar mario world super metroid some really great titles and a real big step up from nes games in fact it almost seemed like they were building up to something something like n64 games on switch and then maybe just maybe gamecube games on switch but forgetting about all of that for a moment there was a rumor floating around for a good duration of this year a big rumor since march we've been anticipating the reveal of some sort of mario 3d collection presumably a compilation of 64 sunshine and the galaxy games again it was just a rumor but it was a pretty believable one and while some wanted to believe it would be full-on remakes of those titles i kept my expectations low and knew deep down that had the rumor come true it would likely just be ports but hey i'd still be pretty happy to have those games available on the switch and when i woke up at 3 p.m today i was shocked to see a super mario 35th anniversary direct shadow dropped by nintendo out of nowhere and i was sure that within this direct there would be the mario 3d collection and i was even more sure when i saw it in the recommended spoiling the final reveal for me thanks youtube the direct started off with the reveal of the super mario bros game and watch which i think is amazing 50 bucks is a bit much for something that's more so just a novelty but as someone who loves to see nintendo actually acknowledge and pay tribute to their history i love the fact that they did this at all it's such an unnecessary and out there product but i thought it was a wonderful start to the direct following that we were immediately given something that we've been dying to see mario 3d world on the switch at first i thought great that's really nice something to play with friends and have a good time but at the end of the trailer they tease this new bowser's fury thing which looks like a whole new cool world and it's like neat great that's hype i'm excited and then on twitter they announced the game will have online play which is like yes yes yes i can finally play this without having to see other people that's great love it but then it turns out that the speed of the game itself seems to be faster which will make the game feel radically different from the original and make the game feel so much smoother so like this is probably going to be one of the best ports slash upgrades to ever come to the switch so far this direct was wonderful but then came the first problematic reveal super mario bros 35 an online battle royale game clearly inspired by tetris 99 and as it turns out it's even by the same developers tetris 99 has been out for about a year and a half now and it's still alive and well people love that game so for them to take the idea and make it work with the original super mario bros that's just something no one could have seen coming and it's available october 1st and only playable until march 31st next year i'll get back to that later because following that up was some kind of mario kart augmented reality game toy thing and again what a ginormous surprise like everyone else has said about this thing if i was a kid i would be all over this but even not as a kid i'm absolutely enamored by the concept and thoroughly impressed that nintendo would pursue such an ambitious idea then nintendo advertised toys and clothes and like yeah i don't really care about that but they were nice enough to give us super mario all stars on snez online which is cool another snes classic available for us to play but of course after that to close out the presentation they go the next one will be our last announcement and i'm like it's time and time it was as i had anticipated it was the mario 3d anniversary collection officially dubbed super mario 3d all-stars it featured mario 64 and 4x3 confirming that like i presume these were just ports but it also showed off mario sunshine in widescreen really odd but that's nice i guess then mario galaxy adapted to work without the wiimote as expected and no galaxy 2. kind of weird but hey i'm happy this rumor turned out to be true and when i saw that cover art at the end of the trailer it gave me a warm feeling seeing these games all together in one bundle 64 and sunshine are two of my favorite games ever and while i don't like galaxy as much as others do i'm overjoyed that these classics are once again available to a new generation of youngins but the more i looked into it the less exciting and more baffling and even depressing it became for starters this is 60 dollars mario 64 was released on the virtual console for ten dollars in 2006 and super mario galaxy was available on the wii u e shop for 19.99 sunshine has never seen a re-release until now so considering it's in the middle of the other two titles i'll price the game at 15 bucks totaling up to 44.99 but on top of that it's a bundle so it should be even cheaper meaning the proper price and honestly what i legitimately expected it to cost would be 39.99 the crash and spyro remakes were 39.99 and those were full-on remakes obviously i'm not saying that nintendo should have remade the mario games from the ground up as the crash and spyro games each ran on the same engine making them easier to develop whereas with the mario titles that would be impossible but the fact that it's a whole 20 dollars more than those honestly just feels like a slap in the face especially during a time where people don't have the most money furthermore taking a closer look at what i originally saw was just two isos in a rom i realized they made a few more changes than i anticipated they redid the sprite scene on the hud to make them a higher resolution and additionally tweaked a few textures to make them look just a bit nicer and to be frank i appreciate the extra touch ups but unfortunately i think these signify one of the many issues with how nintendo treats their older titles it honestly feels like nintendo thinks they absolutely have to edit and redo assets of n64 and gamecube games because they're not old enough to pass off their look as retro but too old to slam them on the eshop for sale as is we can't have the textures look blurry we gotta touch it up but since we gotta touch it up we gotta charge more money but because we can charge more money we've now set a standard where we could never release these games to you in the same way we did years ago the fact that they're treating this mario 3d collection as such a huge deal really drove it home for me that we will never see nintendo nonchalantly give us any of their legacy titles from the n64 gamecube you won't be able to play kirby 64 on switch you won't be able to play ocarina of time or majora's mask on switch you won't be able to play any of the older paper mario games on switch and if any of that does actually happen they're going to make a big deal about it and judging by the price of 3d all-stars they're going to cost a minimum of 20 each and to put the icing on the cake the touch-up scene in 3d all-stars are really the bare minimum of what they could do obviously they had to make galaxy playable in handheld mode which was certainly the biggest effort of the bundle but the fact that galaxy 2 was missing says they really only wanted to put in the minimum possible effort to get what could be considered a 60 value the fact that sunshine is in widescreen while 64 isn't says to me if it was too hard they didn't bother a gamecube game is simply much easier to put into widescreen than an n64 game is and that's why one game is and the other game isn't not to mention both of those games run at 30 fps while galaxy runs at 60fps so while they put in the effort needed to get these games running on switch at all it's going to feel like a stitched together collection of unrelated ports because none of them run in the same way it would genuinely feel like a more natural collection if they just gave us 64 in sunshine both in 30fps and both in 4x3 while making the biggest deal out of galaxy promoting it as the most important piece of the bundle and the worst part is there's a fan made port of mario 64 on the switch that runs in 60 fps and widescreen so playing super mario 64 on the switch through illegal methods would guarantee you a significantly better experience than what nintendo is offering you [Music] it all comes back to just how pathetic what nintendo offers you is while going out of their way to make sure you don't have any alternatives a couple years ago they took down the most reputable rom sites aka the most accessible way to play their legacy content but they didn't give us any legal method to play most of these games instead just forcing people to fork out the ridiculous prices demanded by the secondary market they are helping no one but resellers as they continue to refuse to release their retro titles if they simply always had their games available on their systems at all times there wouldn't be as big of an issue with them striking down rom sites nor would there be any reason to treat super mario 3d all-stars as such a big deal but how can i treat super mario 3d all-stars like a big deal when like their legacy content it won't even always be available when it was announced i took solace in the fact that a few of the most important games in nintendo's history will finally be available to play legally for a new generation mothers will be able to take their kids to their local gamestop or target to purchase these titles and experience them just like we did back then or that's what i thought until i heard them say the physical release will be limited an odd choice but at least switch owners will always be able to purchase it off the eshop but then i learnt that the digital version of super mario 3d all-stars the only legal way nintendo is offering you to play such important titles as super mario 64 and super mario galaxy will only be available to purchase until march 31st of next year now to reiterate if you bought it you can play it past that date but super mario bros 35 is only playable until march 31st that one's a bit more understandable as it takes service to run the game however it's incredibly disappointing that such a fun idea already has a set time frame for when you can play it a rather arbitrary one at that not to mention it releases on october 1st so to only be playable for a total of five months that was already a bit hard to swallow but limiting the accessibility of 3d all-stars it's at the very very least a baffling decision but at the very very most an anti-consumer move people are going to feel like they need to buy it because of this extremely unnecessary deadline fearing that once it's unavailable the price on the secondhand market for physical copies will be astronomical i've seen numerous people say that they already own the original versions of these games and the convenience of playing them on the switch simply isn't enough for them to justify the 60 price tag but because of the limited availability they're buying it anyway before it's too late it's not like nintendo hasn't had a huge issue with scalping so for them to put a cap on how long one of their most requested re-releases is available is just like why i can't even be happy that a younger generation can experience these games when there's only a limited opportunity for them to be able to get this compilation i simply cannot fathom any reason at all as to why they'd intentionally remove the game off the eshop after a certain period of time it costs nothing to have it available there and is the only way nintendo's offering to play such major titles in their catalog the only logical explanation i could see is that they're planning to release these titles individually in the future among other n64 gamecube and wii games but again because of how they felt the need to touch up the games in 3d all-stars i highly doubt that will happen nintendo is japan's richest company so they don't even need the money they'd profit from this collection seeing some of our favorite games re-released really means less to them than it does to us they don't need the money they'd get from selling retro games they don't have to do what we want they don't even have to listen to rules of the market because nintendo's always been the odd one out they have no reason to put in that extra effort or even listen to us when they're gonna get our money anyway nintendo being out of touch is something that's been standard for the company for quite a while now but it's just starting to feel more and more like laziness and legitimate malice it seems that nintendo does not want you to play their older titles in any way unless it's their way
