what's up everyone my name is trent and i've been living traveling and gaming inside of a van for almost three years now but today i'm taking vanlife gaming to the next level and this is all right so here we are at micro center today i am setting out to build the ultimate van life gaming pc i'm talking something that is powerful something that can play any game that i want something that is compact because it's going to be inside this confined space and most of all something that is power efficient because this pc is going to be completely powered off of the sun with these solar panels on top of my van and i've never built a pc ever in my life so hopefully these guys in micro center can help me out because i have no idea what i'm doing so let's head in there let's see what kind of parts we can find to best fit the van life lifestyle let's go so here we are with lucas lucas thank you for joining me he works at micro center what is your title actually uh sales associate sales everything all the above i mean sweet sell anything everywhere lucas is going to help us figure out how to build the perfect van life gaming pc as you know i need something powerful something that can run every game that i want to play sure um something that's compact because it's in this confined space and most of all something that's power efficient because it's going to be powered off solar sure so there's a lot of complications there yeah yeah um so i guess the first question would be how big are we thinking how small are we thinking really where we're gonna go i imagine it mounting on top of my desk here because i think it'll be cool if you could see it right when you walk into the van i want it to be sort of like the main focus of the van because that's sort of my lifestyle i live in a van but i also game it's a big part of me so something small enough to fit on top of this desk maybe right here i don't i don't even know if you have something that small yeah in mind yeah uh we should be able to get something a pretty small like a toaster oven size thing like that there that would be perfect i think that could definitely fit on top of the desk easily enough now my next question is with it being such a small case obviously there's some limitations there as far as like gpu and other parts inside with a computer being that small is there any way that we could build something that's powerful enough to play like triple a games or yeah definitely um nowadays i mean just stuff is getting more and more efficient so it's easy enough to say that we should be able to get a full-sized gaming desktop and that smaller size definitely really um we shouldn't really have too much struggle it might run a little warm but ultimately i don't think that's going to be a huge issue the biggest complication i have living in a van is you know i'm basically living outside so the summers are hot the winters are cold so my biggest concern is like when i'm gaming the computer i know it gets hot but if it's like 90 plus degrees outside fahrenheit i mean is that really gonna is that gonna yes or no um it's it's hard to really say i mean obviously in in georgia it does get hot in the summers in the winter it doesn't get super cold but with that said i think that you ultimately aren't really worried about it we're talking a different scale um okay uh the with temperature that we're running into here we're gonna be talking 90 fahrenheit being a very hot use case for that i mean we're talking upwards of a hundred just at idle for fahrenheit at least okay so i wouldn't worry about it too much it will produce heat and that's you know the higher end hardware we go the more heat it will produce but ultimately i don't think that's necessarily something to be super concerned with i've never been in anything under 15 degrees fahrenheit but if that is the case and we went with like a water cooled system uh do you think that would be a concern of freezing the water that's in the water coolant or um does that work yes and no um unless if you're in antarctica i really wouldn't expect just with the amount of additives they put in those aios that you're going to run into any issues so i wouldn't worry about it too much but we could consider going with air cooling just because but we have a lot of flexibility there i think either way would be fine you'd have to be on the moon almost to get something that would actually freeze i mean you'd have to be really really cold okay okay so on the performance how are you powering it how is everything getting power to it this van is actually solar powered um everything's powered off the sun here these lights the computer my refrigerator um i've got 600 watts of solar panels on the roof of my van the power is then stored in a battery bank that i have under my bed it's 620 amp hours of agm batteries which is ultimately 310 amp hours of usable power um so as of right now i am gaming on a razer laptop that pulls at peak i think 280 watts sure which if i did my math correctly it's been a while so my numbers might be off but i could be able to game on my razer laptop for about eight hours sure and that eight hours of gameplay just means like if if there's no sun at all um recharging my system i can play for eight hours until my battery bank dies but if the sun's out i can pretty much play infinitely sure i would like to keep that power consumption the same or better sure um so 280 watts 300 watts or lower sure power efficiency for our build is that something we could do for such a powerful system is that even possible um it's tight but i think we could um especially if we don't go over the kill or if we even if we go out of our way to do some tweaking here and there we can ultimately get something that is either in that same ballpark as far as wattage maybe a little bit more but i think it's gonna ultimately be a lot more horsepower for you to actually use for gaming so i don't think we're gonna run into any issues but that's something that we would have to kind of play with and kind of see even even if we have to tweak stuff later we can always do that okay so since you're moving away from the laptop how are you planning on getting internet do you have like a good plan for that or so right now i got my internet off of two verizon hot spots which work um the the ultimate downside is that you know these hot spots uh have a data cap of 30 gig so after 30 gigs uh my speeds get throttled sure and ultimately i just sort of pull up to places with public wi-fi and steal their wi-fi friends wi-fi yeah so some i i guess i i don't know how computers work when it comes to getting wi-fi but is there like a good wi-fi chip that we put into the computer that can so certain components will allow for better connectivity um okay if we wanted to we could upgrade individual things on a larger desktop to to to change the wi-fi from this basic to the higher-end you know ax you know wi-fi six 6e supported uh networks but ultimately i think even just having a basic wi-fi setup for this makes a lot of sense do you know what speed you're getting off of that uh i really don't honestly i've never really checked i play a lot of mmos so it doesn't really use a lot of bandwidth sure to my understanding so my hotspot is generally fine for me and even public wi-fi you don't feel like i have any issues public wi-fi works great sure um but a lot of times i find myself parking at friends houses and sure stealing their wi-fi that makes sense so yeah um but yeah i think we should have everything covered yeah we should be able to head inside i think i've got a pretty good idea of what we're looking at we can sweet kind of head in yeah let's do it sure just gonna over the guitar gotcha you just hit okay [Music] [Music] [Music] hold on i need to fix my my watch give me a second it's very important that i get the watch straight are you rolling oh cool huh sorry are you saying no to people behind us just make sure no one walks through okay cool hey zach he's not going to come zach don't walk through here zach come on zach so the time has finally come to finally build the pc that i've been waiting for my entire life lucas want to give us a little run down of the parts that we chose and why we chose them sure start off on top um ryzen 9 5950x plenty of cores plenty of threads to kind of keep up with anything that you want to do gaming streaming even editing anything really sweet x570i just a good rock solid itx motherboard just something simple to work with plenty of expandability for such a small form factor rgx 3070 got an ebj one here it's the one we had a lot of people understand that's how it is right now but more than enough horsepower for just gaming even has the nbc encoder dlss ray tracing in case you want to push any of that stuff a little bit further 32 gigs of ram 3600 megahertz just a fair amount of ram just for gaming and streaming just to keep up with any multitasking you want to do two two terabyte ssds both nvme ones 4.0 one's 3.0 so that way we get benefits on the boot drive and then a secondary drive for let's say games or any sort of media that you have anything like that cool we got a little extra room this is the nr200p not much extra room but it's about as small as we can go before you start running into issues with compatibility things like that uh h100i water cooler it's gonna be a tight fit but we should be able to fit in there and then i grab some extra paints just in case we need them if we can get them in there i'd like to just for extra cooling corsair sf750 power supply platinum rated easy to recommend as efficient as you really can get i don't think we need more than enough more than this wattage but it's ultimately going to need to be as efficient as possible and that's why we go with a platinum rated one it'll end up saving you maybe not a huge amount but it might end up being something in the range of 15 to 20 minutes that might not mean like a seem like a huge amount but it can be a big deal real quick while i'm thinking about it this is a 750 watt power supply yes me not knowing much about power supplies does that mean it pulls 750 watts constantly or okay exact opposite so it can go up to 750 watts i've seen tests where these can go up to 800 but at the end of the day 750 is what this is rated for it will pull however much it needs and so in that same vein what we'll actually be doing is probably running this in what's called an eco mode it'll go from 105 watts down to 60. you're going to lose some performance there but it's going to save you so much efficiency okay it's a small thing but at the end of the day for something like this where efficiency is needed that's going to be a big deal it'll ultimately save you a lot of overall wasted power if you will gotcha okay but yeah i think that's pretty much everything sweet should be good to go yeah you ready for the build yep let's do it let's get started [Music] everybody better vacate from the gateway [Music] moment of truth is it going to turn on yeah one two three i heard that oh wait is the power supply i don't know you're rolling all this right yes that's what i'm talking about you ready yes you think it's going to turn on yeah definitely can we get a countdown three two one let's do it it's definitely doing stuff give it a sec there we go we've got signal baby that's not bad yeah not bad at all all right so after about what was it two three hour build yeah something like that uh we finally finished this compact pc perfect for van life gaming wouldn't you say yeah definitely i mean it's about as much as you could fit in such a small package so yeah i mean we hit all the marks right yeah it's super powerful it's obviously compact yep and it's super power efficient i mean we just checked right now yeah i believe we're pulling what 80 watts 80 watts or something like that at idle and then i think under load we'd probably be in the 250 range well i'm super happy with this and honestly i can't wait to game on this bad boy lucas thank you so much man i really appreciate all your help i'm so excited to play some games on this thing so let's take this bad boy put it in the van and start gaming [Music] [Music] [Music] is why do [Music] uh well thanks guys for watching this
