in the last episode i taught you the techniques to take this fender and make it look like this today i'll teach you tips on how to use body filler to get this fender perfectly straight and then we'll talk about primers and how to properly prep out this fender for paint what is up my name is chris and this is garage noise where i teach you how to build your skill and increase your knowledge about paint and body repair this is the body filler we'll be using today the roburlo maxi light it's a lightweight body filler that sands very easy does not create pinholes and is very smooth all of this is important when you're blocking out your body filler to get it straight this body filler you will mix with two percent hardener this ratio will need to be adjusted depending on the temperature you're working in we'll also be using a polyester finishing putty called icing this product lays down very smooth and it sands very easy i've been using this for years and it works great to mix your filler i would recommend using a paper disposable mixing board or a metal board i'm going to use a metal board here make sure your board is clean and free of debris apply your hardener to the filler and then fold it in until it's one uniform color i like to fold it in rather than stir because i find stirring creates air pockets in that filler that's going to create problems and pinholes when you lay it on the panel you can apply your filler over bare metal or properly sanded paint now manufacturers at this time are recommending that you apply filler over bare metal if you are going to apply your filler over paint make sure that paint is sanded properly with 80 grit sandpaper this promotes adhesion of the body filler in this repair today we're using filler to straighten this panel all the large dents have been removed but when you apply your first coat of filler you want to do what they call a tight coat this is where you apply pressure to your spreader to press that filler into those dents once you've laid your tight coat of filler now it's time to go over this filler and make it as smooth as possible now you're not going to be able to make it perfectly smooth and that's okay because we're going to sand it but it all helps in the blocking process if it's very smooth i would pay attention to the edges of the filler try and smooth those out to a good transition to the paint or the metal wherever you're at try not to leave any hard edges and if you have body lines in your repair make sure to maintain those body lines as much as possible now we have our filler all laid in and it's pretty smooth but there are some little hard edges and ridges that we want to knock down and for that we're going to use this tool right here and this is a cheese grater we call this a cheese grater and basically what we do is we use this over the top of the filler just before it cures you want it to be a little bit soft it helps it work a little bit better now if you're using this bottle rasp you don't want to dig real deep into that filler we're just going over the surface to smooth it out as we shave this fender it starts to harden up what's not hard is tapping that like button so do me a favor give me a thumbs up for speed i'm going to go right to the orbital sander with some 80 grit sandpaper now if you don't have an orbital sander you can block this out with some 80 grit and i'll show you how to do that but i'm going to smooth out all the edges and just kind of flatten it out and shape it before we start blocking smoothing this out with the sander exposed a few bare metal spots so if you have some bare metal spots we've broken through to down to bare metal that could be a high spot and you want to tap those down the first coat of filler allowed us to fill any of those low areas now the second coat is going to give us the material we need to get this panel perfectly straight [Music] now it's time to block this straight for this we're going to use a flexible long block with 80 grit sandpaper now you want to use the longest strokes you possibly can on the panel and you want to block it in a cross or x pattern this is allows this panel to get straight we're starting off with 80 grit sandpaper and then we're going to work our way down to 320. we'll talk about why we do that in a minute now that we have this all blocked straight with the 80 grit we're going to switch over to the orbital sander and 180 grit and i'm using this to remove those 80 grit scratches i want to start getting those down closer to 320 so we can primer over it you can do this at home with an orbital sander and 180 grit but you want to be careful not to distort the body filler at all you've took some time to block it straight so if you're unsure about that just use a block in 180 grit and block over it to help remove those 80 grit scratches now we're going to put a thin coat of icing over this entire repair this is going to allow us to fill any imperfections or deep scratches that we might have missed it's going to be very easy to block out and get it ready for primer [Music] now we're going to finish blocking this with the long board and some 180 grit sandpaper just to knock the roughness off and then we'll switch over to 320 to block out those 180 grit scratches now i've switched over to 320 grit sandpaper on the longboard just to finish the blocking on this we are going to use a little bit of a guide coat to make sure this panel straight the other thing you can do is use your hand as you're blocking or in between blocking to feel if that panel's straight so you just take the palm of your hand and you run quickly over the panel you can feel any high or low areas now i'm going to use a guide coat to spray over this entire repair area then we'll block it to look for any high or low errors that we may have missed a guide coat comes in an aerosol can or a powder form either one is perfectly fine and if you are interested in any of the products or tools i use i will leave a link in the description to my storefront [Music] [Music] now it's time to prep out this panel for primer and to do that we're going to use 600 grit sandpaper on the orbital sander i am using an interface pad which attaches to the orbital sander and it's a soft pad that allows you to go around contours and body lines without digging in it's a good idea as you're sanding with the 600 grit and prepping this panel out for primer that you're looking for any imperfections any pinholes or deep scratches that you want to remove or fill before we prime it when you're taping off your repair area you want to tape off any area that hasn't been sanded for primer now we have our repair area all masked off for primer the primer we're using today is the roberlo me1 this is a direct to metal 2k urethane primer that's designed to harden over the repair area it also is a high build primer so you can block it out i am using the 3m performance gun to spray this primer with a 1.4 tip my air pressure is set at 20 psi my spray pattern is dialed back just a little bit because it's a small area and i want it to be controlled so i want to control my spray pattern and where my primer is going one thing to mention is you don't want a primer right against that taped area that's going to create a hard edge that you're going to have to sand out later if you have questions about what primer you should be using i have a video devoted to that topic i will leave a link at the end after the first coat of primer we're going to let it cure for 10 minutes apply a second coat that'll give us enough material to finish this repair and in the next episode we're going to finish this repair by prepping it out for paint masking it blending it and it's all in the next episode so click that subscribe button like and share this video and hit the bell so you don't miss anything we'll see you next time on garage noise
