welcome to animation assist I'm gonna be talking about why animation assist blows procreates old features out of the water and the things that it does the best and things that it doesn't do so great I'm using a 2,000 by 2,000 pixel canvas the reason why is it's big enough to work with for what I'm doing a lot of times when post an Instagram or just making a quick little transparent animation that I can use to put on giffy or get into instagram stories or something like that so I start with the 2,000 by 2,000 because it's large enough to resize when I'm done and it's also small enough to allow me a lot of layers so once you open crop and resize it'll tell you that you have 130 layers available so that that lets me know how many frames of animation I can have so if you're using a 5,000 by 5,000 canvas you're gonna have like 32 or 60 frames this way I have more than plenty and I can get started so we're gonna go to the settings which is actions and we're gonna go down to an animation assist I'm also going to turn on drawing guide I'm gonna make the drawing guide a little bit thicker so you guys can see and I'll make it purple so it'll stand out also I'll make it around this size perfect so each layer in your layers panel is going to be a frame in your animation the exception to this is if you have a group it will not play in the animation and if you have masks those will also affect the animation the best part about animation assist at this point is that you can switch between your layers here at the bottom so let's just duplicate duplicate you can switch between your layers by tapping on them so we can go like 0 X Y it's gonna show your other layers and transparent so you can see what's behind and what's in front if you come to settings right here you'll see onion skin opacity and the onion skin are like the layers peeled back from your animation so you can see the previous onion layer and the next onion layer in the future so you can set how many onion frames you want normally you want to keep it somewhere around like 2 or 3 maybe 4 but it starts to get really muddy you start to there starts to be so many onion skins on the screen that distracts from what you're trying to do so I like to keep it around 2 or 3 onion skin opacity it just really depends on what you're working on and the colors and what you need to see color secondary frames shows you that red happened in the past and green will happen in the future if you're colorblind and can't see that I believe there's some settings up in the top where you can change those colors to be whatever you want so blend primary frame is going to show your primary frame and your next frame as green so let's say you want to see all of your frames in a row and you have your black frame which is your focus frame the one that's selected is going to be brighter and more distinguishable than all the others but if you want it to blend in just so you can take a look at your series of frames you can turn that on and it'll hide so you have three settings down here one-shot loop and pink foam one shot will play your animation once and stop an end loop will play your animation and then play your animation again and it'll keep looping so if you save it loop as a gif it will continuously play if you save it one shot it'll play it stop ping pong it will not loop it will loop but not linearly what its gonna do is it's gonna go straight forward hit the last frame and it's gonna ping pong off and and go backwards to the first frame and then then ping pong off of the first frame back to the last frame it'll keep ping pong you back and forth so that might look cool it's like a boomerang effect you're not gonna want that in all cases but it just depends so let's start with loop let's turn the frames per second to twelve so standard would be 24 frames per second but it just depends a lot of things are made twelve eleven seven you know just depends on what you're making and what you're comfortable making so obviously the higher frames per second the more frames you need for your animation the more smooth your animation will be the more complex your animation could be so we'll start with twelve three onionskin frames 60% opacity and we'll turn on color secondary frames so if we play this right now we're gonna have a pretty quick animation so even though it's showing this red and green that's not actually on this layer if we hide the other layers they're not actually showing on the screen but we can see what's going on another cool thing about procreate 5 animation assist is that you can set a foreground and a background so let's say my foreground I have some blades of grass that are sticking up over from the side and like maybe a bush yada yada yada so I have a bush some grass and maybe also in the foreground there is like I don't know some sort of black bar right here and I want this to be in front of every frame no matter what happens in my animation you know I want these to be the forefront so this stuff I want to stay on the front of everything I do and so I want my animation to play behind it so what I'm gonna do is I'm going to make sure this layer is at the very very top or all the way to the far right down here and I'm gonna tap on it you won't be able to find this setting up here you have to tap on it down here and there's a setting says foreground once you select that it's gonna highlight a blue square around that frame and that's locked in if you want to edit this frame you do have to tap on it turn it off as the foreground then you're selected on the frame you can change it then set it back as the foreground the foreground can be used in blending modes as well if you wanted to only blend over certain parts or do certain things this is the spot to do it you can change the blending mode and have it affect your animation dynamically for each frame the same goes for the background you can set up a background that will be not moving no matter what let's create a new frame and the same goes for the background it cannot be at the top or in the middle it has to be the very last frame right above background color so background color will change the background of your animation but you can't paint on the background layer so I prefer to leave the background layer off or the background layer white and then have a background layer that's used in the animation so let's make some mountains behind in the background layer it's just draw some mount ends select this whole area drag in a color we could make them let's make them dark blue and then we'll lower the opacity because they're real far in the background if we wanted we can do the sky behind so if we tap on this drag in the sky so now we have the sky and some mountains in the background and then in the foreground we have Bush's leaves and a title bar so what we'll do is we'll tap on this frame down here and we'll click background that option won't be available if the frame is not all the way to the left of the first frame so once you select that now those things are locked in if we play our animation this is what we'll see for reasons of contrast what I'm going to do is delete these frames and draw a colored line so we can see what's happening let's turn off the drawing guide so it's not so complicated on the screen and we'll start with the line so we have a pink dot let's put it on our first ring so if a pink dot in our first friend since this foreground is think of it like layers and it's above it so it's sitting up here and we're looking through it when when I move the pink dot so let's go new frame I'm over the pink dot down new frame only with the pink dot down again and as you can see it's gonna go behind that foreground layer but it's going to sit on top of the mountains which is the background so it's not going to go behind the mountains right here it'll stay above them because that's the background but it will go behind the rest so let's see where we started we started right here so let's just finish it right there so each time I draw a frame I'm just imagining where I want this line to go and he'll go off-screen then I'll come back right here right here right here and then and then I guess we'll need to do another one right here so you'll see it go behind I'll slow it down so we can see our dot go behind the foreground above the background behind the foreground again and it'll continue to repeat that since it's on a loop so what we've managed to do is we managed to make a background that's static that's not gonna be moving as well as a foreground that's static that's not gonna be moving and an animation that lives as the middle piece in between the sandwich before this was impossible in procreate he couldn't do this in procreate because your first layer was your first layer and your last layer was your last layer each one was a frame in the animation and you couldn't have set a static background now the possibilities open up for a lot more so yeah have fun with the animation assist tool use the drawing guide use foregrounds backgrounds move your layers around if you're having any problems with setting foreground and background remember they have to be the last frame and the first frame respectively there's just so much you can do with this tool and I am barely scratching the surface so I hope you enjoyed and if you're looking forward to more tutorials or anything leave comments below what do you want to see what do you need help with I'd be more than glad to help if you want to take a look at in my brushes they're all on my website that you're probably find links on my Instagram or something so yeah have a great day if you need any help send me an email I'll be glad to help
