I'm going to show you how to sound better in Da Vinci results so if you're working with audio whether it's a voiceover like this Soul music radio or something from a video like this you know these competitors these people that are doing things differently than and of course a lot of background noise going on there will improve both of those scenarios during this video uh so the first and most important thing to say is when you're recording audio and putting it into Fair light which is the audio editor inside Da Vinci resolve try and get it recorded as best you can at source so we've already got a great template here with this voice over and there's a great effect for beginners actually under the channel option here dialog processor gives you everything you could want let's listen to it with it on these people that are taking and that's obviously the second track so let's go to the first track and listen Soul music radio and then let's listen before presents classic I actually think that made it sound worse let's look at presets female vo let try that Soul music radio that's before presents classic still not sending great after is it so let's fix it we can switch off drumble there's no background Rumble going on and there's no plosives there's no popping so let's switch that off too now the dser let's turn the amount right up and really dial in the frequency so we get a big amount of green on the s's Soul music radio presents classic soul dance okay we're hitting the S around there around the 5.86k range I'd prefer to have a spectral frequency view uh like you get in a derby audition but for now I can just use my ear and dial it in now I'm just going to dial the amount back a bit Soul music radio presents classic soul dance so I really only want to be getting that amount coming in when there's s's let's try again Soul music radio presents classic so that's about right for a dser compressor is dragging down the volume that's why it sounds worse than before and again threshold here minus 22 or about minus 20 is a good amount and rather than worrying you with ratios and things it just says amount how much compression do you want fast is generally good for a voiceover so we'll leave that as is and we'll bump it up a bit and see what happens Soul music radio presents classic soul dance getting quite a lot of gain reduction there 5 DB of gain reduction so let's take the threshold up to get less Soul music radio that's more natural and the expander is set pretty well you'll see these green lights coming on when there's silence to mute out anything in between the speech soul dance boom Soul music radio and then we got the the Exciter which is set for a female voice this simply enhances the high end of a voice so be careful with your dsing cu the Exciter can bring some of that siblin back which we don't want let's try again let's Zoom this from zero to uh one 100 or one as it's called zero to one Soul music radio presents so you hear how thin and sibilant it gets when we increase that so be careful classic soul dance and let's AB it again so this is before Soul music radio and then after soul music radio little bit of a subtle difference there we've done some subtle changing there and this is using the dialog processor okay the uh it's actually known as the if we go into the menu over here and look at it it's actually known as the dialogue processor so it does some subtle enhancements you can make it stronger and harder if you want another thing I'd recommend doing is on the bus track so on the mix track pop on a limiter so it's very important that you get something like this on under Dynamics limiter and usually want to set the uh limit uh to be at the very highest I would say uh well you've got different things here but vocal limit is a good preset here and it'll just make sure you don't go any Louder Than Zero DB uh with your recordings so let's have another listen Soul music radio okay next now we've added that dialogue processor we might just increase the volume down here on the mixer and let's have a listen Soul music radio presents classic soul dance okay so that works well but but uh if you don't want to use the dialog processor my high suggestion here is actually to go ahead and use Dynamics and EQ really easy to use going to make your voice sound great on Dynamics all we want to do is switch on the compressor take the threshold down to about minus 20 and all we really want to play with there is maybe turn the ratio up to maybe three or 4 to1 let's try four to one Soul music radio then we need to turn the makeup gain up to make it louder presents classic soul dance okay now we can a so we started with something like this Soul music radio presents classic soul dance so you hear this compressor much easier to set than the one in dialog processing and it actually sounds pretty good uh expander or gate will do the same thing look at that gain reduction when there's no speech dance boom Soul music radio love is on the air and that's actually working really well and we've got a self limiter here so we can actually set that Threshold at say uh let's move it over the other side to aboutus 60b and that's going to stop the voice over from going any louder than 6db or minus 60b Soul music radio presents classic soul dance and that for me is the classic voiceover cinematic sound set there if you want to make it even more cinematic you can actually use EQ under here double clicking the EQ segment here in the audio mixer and you'd simply add on a high pass filter which is band one here uh so increase that soul music radio so the higher you make that love is on the air the more of a cinematic kind of crisp sound you're getting we can use some of the high bands to increase the high end R&B soul love songs Soul music radio presents classic soul dance and again we can ab this so we can listen to before Soul music radio and after love is on the air so that's your kind of cinematic filter if you like done very easily here with the equalizer of course there are presets as well so you can choose some of that stuff there's the telephone effect if you're going for that R&B soul love songs so plenty you can be doing uh with voiceovers in Fair light make them sound better instantly using just a few different effects as well and really important here it'll ask you at the top what order do you want to apply the effects to your audio so at the moment we've got Dynamics so compression going on first and then EQ afterwards let's actually make that a more sensible EQ curve that looks more sensible to me um but I actually prefer to do it the other way around and have effects EQ and then compression so that just is a subtle change let's listen Soul music radio presents classic soul dance and that's probably my favorite sound that sounds much cleaner and crisper if you swap the order around to be effects EQ and Dynamics or compression as it is um also to note here I'm not adding any other effects in we did play with the dialog processor at the start but if it was was a noisy clip I might add some form of noise reduction here and that should always go first in your chain so there should never be a reason to swap around and put EQ or Dynamics at the start of your chain let's zip over and uh make something sound better in Da Vinci resolve particularly inside Fair light um if it's something from a video recording so this is my my friend Nick nimon he's a fantastic YouTuber love what he does and uh he's given me this clip with lots of wind noise instead of you know these comp these people that are doing things differently than so how would I go about attacking that wind there well first of all it's high pass filter all the way so we'll go down here and we'll look for what have we got we've got all kinds of different effects in here but probably the best thing to be using here is some kind of uh EQ curve so we could use this EQ curve we could also use arguably a little bit of noise reduction as well that might help so we're going to Restoration we can actually go to noise reduction and we could just set the preset as damble it instead of of you know these competitors these people that are doing things different that actually works quite well that doesn't work too bad we can take that threshold down a bit than me these people that are taking my audience like them the existence turn the attack up a bit and other channels one shows you that you have a market to tap into and and then let's switch that noise reduction off to listen to before two it also shows you thaty these are groups of people that I can collaborate with that I can work so it's helping to reduce now I'm actually going to switch around and put the EQ first and then the effects and then finally the Dynamics so we're eqing using this band then we're using the effects and then we're using the Dynamics and why I'm doing that will become clear because I want to use some EQ to roll off some of the low end so with the noise reduction I might actually now reduce some of the uh impact or actually disable it for the moment as I go into the EQ area here and I'm going to use again a high pass filter it's a shame I can't shape this to be a little tighter I'd love to be able to shape that to be a a tight rolloff rather than a soft rolloff but let's work with what we've got here your competition looking at them as allies instead of you know these competitors these people that are doing things differently than me these people that are taking my audience like them the existence of the other channels one so if I could make that a harder roll off then it would save more of Nick's voice and get rid of more of the wind but as it's set it's eliminated some of it we can then reenable the noise reduction and here how that works shows you that you have a market to tap into so it's working pretty well in tandem maybe now I can roll off that high pass a bit and two it also shows you that hey and I can and then I'll maybe add on a bit of high these are groups of people that I can collaborate with that I can work with that I can exchange traffic with and exchange okay so we're we're getting somewhere interesting with all of this finally Dynamics is going to pump things up so let's make sure that's enabled and let's set up a brief compressor here so we'll make that uh a ratio of just two for dialogue I would suggest so let's go back to the start of Nick's audio your competition looking at them as allies instead of you know these competitors these people that are doing things differently than me these liing my audience like them the existence of the other channels one shows you that you have so again we're starting to make things sound a little bit better using EQ first to roll off the Bas the wind Rumble then we're using that noise reduction effect um which I have to say I think the noise reduction capabilities are far better over in Adobe Audition and Premier Pro but we're working here in Fair light with what we've got available to us and uh I think a future update would definitely be able to change the shape of the high pass filter in the EQ curve that would be a really cool update and then over in Dynamics we're just compressing The Voice a little bit uh we can also go ahead and increase the makeup gain to make this sound louder Market to tap into in two it also shows you that hey these are groups of people that I can collaborate with that I can work with that I can exchange traffic with and then we can maybe switch off everything to hear how it sounded before so let's go ahead and uh move all these effects to somewhere where we can see them disable them and enable them one by one as we play back let's go back over here okay let's play and switch them on again your competition looking at them as allies now let's start to release them of you know these competitors people that are doing differ than me these people that are taking my audience like them the existence so you can see with just a few effects you can make video recorded audio sound better but as I did say at the start of this video always good to record well at source use a good microphone get it close to you and get a wind protective shield over there or something to dampen the sound of any wind noise if you can now if you're interested in synchronizing audio in Da Vinci resolve you definitely need to watch my next video it's going to tell you all about how to synchronize audio and get it right in the right place at the right time got any questions about Da Vinci resolve and specifically fairl light do let me know in the comments down below
