It's ironic that the video uses the scene with Rachel in the pilot as an example of Don successfully projecting confidence when she promptly turns that back on him and bursts his bubble.
Also, he doesn't hug Leonard because of some sense of confidence but because he realizes that his sense of alienation is a shared experience. Don is a fake persona who Dick Whitman creates by studying people and watching movies, but this collective alienation was an element of humanity that he had never understood until that moment.
I get why he jump cuts Leonard’s monologue of alienation (runtime), but it’s so powerful. It deserves to be seen as intended. Also, agree with another poster that the hug isn’t about confidence at all.
