[Music] hey gardeners so today i'm taking on the task of sheet mulching this area a lot of people have asked me so many questions about my sheet mulching methods so i'm going to demonstrate to you what i do today the first thing i do is collect boxes everywhere i go so every place i see boxes whether it's the store side of the road i just gather those boxes and store them in my shed i have to take a little time to remove tape staples and any type of stickers that might be on those boxes i don't stress if i can't get all those stickers off once i plant once i get ready to dig those stickers will be easy to remove if i dig into the ground and find it so i'm not going to stress if i can't get every single sticker off the box but today is the day i show you my sheet mulching techniques so there are a few things in here that i don't want to cover i have swamp sunflower growing here this grass i'm just going to let it grow i might pull out some of this but i do want to keep my swamp sunflowers i have some perennials that are still making their way out of the ground now most people would recommend mowing this down a bit before sheet mulching well i'm not gonna do that today i'm just gonna cover it up and i'll put the cardboard down then i'm just gonna put mulch on top if i had enough compost that i wanted to use or topsoil that i wanted to use i would put that on top of the cardboard then the mulch but i am going to keep this job really simple just cardboard and mulch if the budget allows later i'll add compost i can rake back the mulch and add some compost in certain areas but i'm keeping this area real simple today just going to lay down the cardboard use my box cutter to get the shape that i want to get let's go [Music] so here is the during stage of sheet mulching you'll notice there are certain areas like this one that i'm leaving open because i have perennials coming up i will just have to dig out the weeds and grass that you see right there instead of putting a piece of cardboard there along this edge i think i will put down cardboard along this edge and over here i will probably add newspaper around the sunshine ligustrums and over here i'm leaving this patch open because i recently put down some sunflower seeds and i think some zinnia seeds so i'll leave this patch of soil open so i have changed my mind about this area i will put down some soil on top of that some soil and compost i have a compost and soil conditioner mix so i'm going to add that to this area before i put the mulch on because i don't want my mulch to run down this slope so i want to make sure that that mulch stays in place [Music] do [Music] so here's an update of joovy as it stands now june 2021 i put a lot of work into this area just transforming it from what it used to be and it's still in transition but it looks so much better now it's so lush the sunflowers really make it stand out this is my summertime spot back here i have some cantaloupes growing back here and i don't even remember planting these kind of lilies but they are pretty spectacular and out of all the cantabilities i have in my garden these don't get damaged by pests i have a crepe myrtle right here that got damaged by the frost so i'm letting it grow wild a little bit until i can shape it the way i want it to be so i'll just back up let you see the rest of juvie some of the edges in the back you can still see the cardboard i'll come in and trim that cardboard away that just helped to suppress the weeds and vines that are growing from my neighbor's yard but all in all i'm loving it [Music] you
