hello I am David with Carter & Son - works in Seattle Washington sharpening tools is critical to great wood turning and having a razor edge is what we are going to demonstrate today today we are going to start with a toisan variable speed grinder it's available from cutter master it's made in North America and is a wonderful machine the reason is it is variable speed and is available with a six-inch CBN wheel or an 8 inch wheel today we are going to demonstrate the machine using our 8 inch CBN wheel which has 2 grits 80 grits and a hundred and 80 grit ok today we're going to sharpen our one inch skew and how we begin is we color in the with a felt pen the cutting edge on the 1 inch skew and once we have done that we lay it down on the flat table and with the machine turned off we just rotate the wheel slowly to get the correct angle as you can see we have the right angle there that is correct because it is taking off the felt pen mark now we turn the grinder on and we place our thumb on the tool and we simply spin it around just create a radius on the end of the tool let's go back and forth and then turn it over and do the same procedure on the opposite side the correct angle is about one to one and a half times the thickness of the steel tool in our case it's 3/8 of an inch thick that gives you a razor-sharp edge ready to use this is our 1/8 parting tool and we gain to sharpen the edge and what we do is just place it down and bring it up against the wheel and restore the cutting edge to the tool just go back and forth it takes a few moments and there your edge is restored we're now going to sharpen our 3/4 inch roughing gouge so the first thing we do is with a sharpie we color in the cutting edge which we like to set at 50 degrees once we've colored it in carefully we then put it on the platen of the machine and with a grinder turned off we slowly rotate the wheel to ensure that we have the correct angle of 50 degrees so we carefully bring the tool up to the wheel and turn it by hand now we look at the tool and we see that we do have the correct angle of 50 degrees we turn the grinder on and we now sharpen the tool you simply rotate back and forth on the platen you once you have done that several times you now have a razor-sharp edge and the tool is ready to use ok today we're going to sharpen our half inch spindle gouge so we use the Wolverine jig and the wrapped or set up tool with the wheel turned off you have to match the wrapped or jig the top and the bottom of the fixture inside the Wolverine jig and then you lock it down you then pick up the tool and place it in the holder and set it at two inches in the raptor setup jig must be 2 inches and you lock that down you then turn the grinder on place the tool in the jig and just rotate back and forth to restore the edge now you place the tool in the two and a half inch setting of the Raptor jig and you put a relief angle at the underside of the tool you just go back and forth to create the relief angle once that is done you now have a razor sharp tool now carefully use it and hone to remove the burr and the tool is ready to use okay now we are going to show sharpening our 5/8 bowl gouge and we set the jig at 50 degrees using the Raptor set and the Wolverine system well then you set the tool in at two inches just like the half-inch spindle gouge and you go back and forth the same way to create a razor edge and that's what it should look like you then set the tool in the two and a half inch setting of the Raptor jig and that creates a bevel release on the underside of the tool just a small amount of clearance and go back and forth and that's what that should look like thank you so much for watching our sharpening videos it is greatly appreciated and happy turning from all of us at Carter & Son Tool Works thank you
