the atomos ninja 5 is the perfect complement to the canon eos r5 and r6 for shooting long-form 4k video so if you just bought an atomos ninja 5 or you're thinking of getting one this video will demonstrate how to set everything up to get the highest quality 4k footage [Music] step 1 connect the ninja to the r5 r6 to do this you need to buy an hdmi 2.0 cable with full-sized hdmi at one end and micro hdmi at the other the cable i use and recommend is this coiled cable made by dutec because it's compact and doesn't hang off the camera as a normal cable would if you'd rather use something else just make sure you get an hdmi 2.0 cable step 2 attach an ssd drive to record video using the ninja 5 you need serial ata ssd drives these drives offer high capacity and performance at a lower price per gigabyte than internal cfxpress and sd cards the ssd drives i use are made by western digital i own both a 500 gigabyte and one terabyte drive 500 gigabytes is enough for an hour and a half of high quality 4k footage while one terabyte gives you nearly three hours and by the way you can record just one continuous video with no shutoffs or overheating if the ninja runs out of space it will save the video to the ssd drive before shutting off recording to attach the ssd it's best to use the atomos master caddy the ninja 5 comes with one but you can buy more separately if you acquire more drives simply screw the drive into the caddy then mount it to the back of the ninja step 3 format the ssd drive power on the ninja and it may automatically prompt you to format the attached drive if not tap anywhere on the top menu scroll over to media and tap format step four configure external video on the r5 r6 first put the camera in video mode press the mode button on top then the info button on the rear of the camera you may use any mode here but manual is preferable for controlling exposure next set video quality press the menu button on the back of the camera then go to movie record quality and set 4k hq mode to enable then set movie record size to 4k u which is 4k uhd choose whichever frame rate you want i typically use 24 frames per second then all i for compression next enable c log go to the third shoot menu select canon log settings then set canon log to on and while you're in there also set color matrix to neutral and to clarify this is regular c log not c log 2 or 3. at the time of this video the r5 and r6 supports c-log only c-log will expand video dynamic range for editing and more flexibility later when color grading in post next go to shoot menu 8 and set overheat control to off this should not be set to on any time you are recording externally then one row down set hdmi display to the camera plus monitor option the camera's menu system will then appear on the ninja when the menu button on the camera is pressed finally go to setup screen 2 and set echo mode to off this will prevent the camera from powering off while recording now the camera is set up to provide the ninja with the highest possible video quality step 5 configure internal video on the ninja now that we have external video set up on the camera the ninja needs to use the same settings tap anywhere on the ninja's top bar then scroll over to input here you may confirm the video resolution and frame rate being provided by the camera if you use the same settings as i did from step 4 you should see uhd and a frame rate of 23.98 down here in the camera output section make sure legalize is turned on the ninja screen will then correctly display log video output from the camera next slide over to record and set codec format to prores and compression to hq step six press record on the ninja high quality 4k video is now being recorded in prores to the attached ssd drive to disable the menu on the ninja while recording tap anywhere on the screen the red outline here confirms the ninja is currently recording when done remove the ssd drive from the back of the ninja then use an adapter to transfer footage to your mac or windows computer the adapter i use is made by startech it can transfer footage up to 10 gigabits per second and works perfectly with the aforementioned western digital drives that's it you're now recording high quality 4k video on the atomos ninja 5 in the prores video format that looks nearly identical to high quality 4k video recorded internally on the eos r5 and r6 using the same settings the next step would be importing that prores footage into premiere final cut etc and then applying a rec709 utility lut to conform that c-log video footage to broadcast standards canon's official c-log luts are a bit hard to find so i left a link to download them in the description below if you don't already have them before we go a few tips for using the ninja 5 with the r5 and r6 first tip sharpening sharpening is not something that ninja 5 can do to sharpen video you either apply sharpening when color grading in post or apply sharpening to the source video file by modifying c log settings on the r5 or r6 sharpening in post is preferable from a data purity perspective but for me and my setup sharpening in premiere makes video playback and encoding excruciatingly slow so for videos like this i apply a little sharpening in camera to do so go back to the canon log settings menu from earlier select characteristics and then set sharpness to a value higher than zero this sharpens the external video signal from the camera which results in sharper prores video on the ninja i recommend experimenting with different sharpness levels in camera to see what works best for you but for me a value of 3 looks great it's what i'm using on this video right now second tip consider buying a cage for your r5 or r6 a cage will make the camera more stable and provides a more comfortable setup for mounting and using the atomos ninja 5. i talked about this small rig cage and a slightly more affordable cage option made by urig in a separate video which i will link to up here and below in the description third tip for continuous shooting consider buying a power adapter for both the ninja 5 and the camera atomos sells a kit version of the ninja 5 which includes a power adapter or you can buy the adapter separately to continuously power the camera also refer to the aforementioned r5 accessories video for i covered that topic in that video as well fourth and final tip import a rec 709 lut like the aforementioned official ones made by canon to the ninja 5. once imported you may then tap on the menu button at bottom right then tap the monitor tab then lut to see a live preview of your c-log video as it will appear later when converted to rec 709 in post i have found in practice this isn't 100 accurate it's not exactly the same as applying the same rec 709 lut to c log footage in premiere but it is accurate enough and a decent enough approximation so that you're able to visually determine whether the exposure settings that you're currently using are sufficient when shooting in c log by the way if you need help importing luts to the ninja 5 see the description below oh and by the way i was literally about to upload this video to youtube when atomos announced a free firmware update for the ninja 5 atom os 10.61 which includes a new time lapse mode now i think this feature is super cool and awesome especially for people who may be using the ninja with cameras that don't have built-in intervalometers and they have to use separate accessories and pieces of hardware in order to shoot time lapses with the r5 and r6 is not quite as as necessary because those cameras can record uh time lapses they have built-in functionality to do so but i think the distinct advantage of the ninja is well one you have this nice large display to be working with and you're able to record those time lapses to those high-capacity low-cost ssd drives that i was talking about earlier which means you'll be able to capture more footage which potentially means you'll be able to shoot longer time lapses uh using the ninja assuming of course you're able to just continuously feed it power so if you're interested in that be sure to check out this video i will link to it below if you want to see more about that all right i hope this video answered any questions you may have had about setting up and using the atomos ninja 5 with the canon eos r5 and r6 by the way this video you're looking at is being shot on the r5 with the atomos ninja recording using the exact settings that i described earlier in this video and for me this setup works perfectly because i use the r5 for other things i use the r5 uh most notably for photography and having the availability of the ninja 5 i can just throw the monitor on turn it on record in high quality pro res same exact settings that the camera would be using internally except you don't have to deal with that 30 minute record shut off thing that's been part of canon cameras for a long time uh nor do you have to worry about the camera eventually overheating and shutting off when recording in high quality 4k for me it is the perfect compromise because when i don't need to record long form video i can just take the monitor off i can shoot b-rolls shoot it internally to the camera or i can do photography obviously with the camera as well and then when i need to sit down and make a video like this one i just attach the monitor and record to an ssd drive on the back and what i like about the setup is that then it means i don't have to go out and buy two separate cameras i can just use the camera that i like for photography the camera that i prefer to use which is the eos r5 and when i need to work around those limitations of the camera the atomos ninja 5 does the perfect job if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment below or you can follow me over at instagram and send me a direct message through there as usual everything i talked about in this video is linked below for you to check out and explore that's it hope you enjoyed the video if you did please remember to give it a thumbs up i'll see you next time
