welcome to the setup guide of the canon eos r and Atomos ninja 5 in this video I'll run through the optimal settings to get the best possible video quality out of ESR this is canons first full-frame mirrorless camera and also the first to offer 4k 10 bit 4 - 2 external recording via the HDMI and it is also equipped with Canon log which is perfect for HDR productions ninja 5 users can now benefit from the well-established Canon color science combined with 10 bit log for HDR recording the ninja 5 recorder perfectly resolves Kenalog output from the ESR converts it into a 10.5 stop HDR on screen in real time what that means is that you see what your camera sensor is capturing in bright detail so you can expose your shot correctly and with absolute confidence and that's all thanks to a hi-brite thousand NIT panel which is significantly brighter than the LCD on your camera the 5-inch screen only weighs in at 360 grams and sits perfectly on top of the camera when recording video with ESR and the ninja 5 you can shoot to the new generation of además atom X SSD mini drives these are developed with leading brands and offer high speed and high reliability in a compact metal chassis además also have all the recommended HDMI cables you require now we'll dive into the menu settings to get the best possible video quality out of your SAR to the ninja 5 assuming you've got a fully charged battery and an SD card you can turn your camera on by default you will be in stills capture mode in order to get out of stills and into video mode you will need to hit the mode button on the top of the camera and then you'll be presented with the stills shooting modes then if you hit the info button once you'll be presented with the movie shooting modes there are many different shooting modes to pick from but we always recommend using manual exposure manual exposure allows you to adjust all the parameters for your exposure giving you the absolute control of your image here you can see we can adjust the shutter speed we can adjust the aperture and we can adjust the ISO by the simple to use touchscreen interface now that we're in video shooting mode and set to manual exposure we can hit the menu button to set up our recording settings on this menu page you'll see a number of options the movie record quality is the first one you want to go into you will notice that there's various different frame sizes and codecs that you can record to IPB all I in 4k or 1080 selecting 4k all I would be the highest quality you can record internally and depending on your video format whether it's power ntuc the maximum frame rate that you record in 4k is either 25 frames or 30 frames internally the camera will record this as an 8-bit video another thing you might want to set up while you're here you'll notice sound recording as an option here in this menu page you can set your sound recording to be auto or you can set it up to be manual please note that the HDMI sends a video signal along with a 2 channel audio signal straight into the ninja 5 and the ninja 5 will record this audio just as it would internally further along in the menu you'll see the timecode option in here this is where you set up your HDMI trigger so you can trigger the recorder from the camera which automatically records on the ninja set your time code to on and then set your record command to on now conveniently when you hit record on the ESR you are recording on the ninja 5 it's highly recommended to set up your white balance with a preset or dial in your Kelvin temperature or set a custom white balance through the menu the ESR comes equipped with many different picture profiles however if you turn on Canon log you get the maximum image quality possible for video and this is what it looks like you'll notice that log video appears a lot more flat when compared to the high contrast standard presets and that's how you set it up for internal 8-bit recording or external 8-bit recording to harness the true potential the ESR and the ninja V combined you will need to activate 10 bit external video recording with an 8 bit record you can get 256 shades of red blue and green however with a 10-bit video you can have 1,024 shades of red blue and green that's a lot more color information that allows for smoother gradations of color and will be most noticeable for example in things like skies and heavy color grading 10 bit recording is especially useful when recording in log and highly recommended if you activate view assist it is only going to affect the monitoring on the back of the EOS are not output or change the internal record you can change the color matrix from cinema is original to neutral depending on which Cinema Camera you're trying to match if you want to fine-tune your image a little bit more you can use the characteristics menu to adjust the sharpness hue and saturation to get the widest possible dynamic range and the lowest noise set your ISO to ISO 400 that'll get you the cleanest signal-to-noise ratio and the most dynamic range some shooting scenarios require a higher ISO that's fine but you will introduce more noise so now you're ready to shoot 4k 10-bit video on the ninja 5 here's what you need to do take a HDMI cable and plug it into the HDMI port on the EOS are the screen will flash and present your image go into your menu settings just ensure Canon log is set to 10 bit take note of the message here saying that card recording is not supported in 10 bit mode it is obviously supported only via the HDMI navigate to the input menu on the ninja 5 and ensure that your camera output is set to Canon C log C gamut and to ensure that the trigger is set correctly select HDMI and the trigger will be on the ninja five offers many different ways you can monitor your shot there's their native signal rec.709 HL g + PQ standards you also have the option to load a custom luck this can be easily done through the LUT menu take note of the waveform when I go back and cycle through the different monitoring options it never changes that's because we're recording the native signal at all times we just choose the way in which it's displayed it's super easy to load your own luck I select the desired LUT from your drive click on it and that luck is loaded and saved into the internal memory there are many monitoring features on the ninja 5 you've got your luma waveform RGB parade vector scope vector scope zoom focus peaking zebras false color blue only exposure to help with visible noise all of these features allow you to get perfect exposure and critical focus the record page allows you to choose between avid Enix and Apple ProRes and you can choose what type of compression you would like the higher quality allows for less time and low quality for more another handy feature that the ESR doesn't have is a pre-roll function you can turn that on to record up to 8 seconds of HD and up to 3 seconds of 4k touching the audio meters activates the audio menu here you can see the channels of audio you're recording and monitoring if you're recording from the HDMI port just leave channels 1 & 2 selected and set your desired headphone level you can record up to 4 channels of audio with this setup to come from the camera via HDMI and 2 from the audio input on the ninja 5 here in the media menu you'll see what brand of discs you have and the capacity you can also format your disc here each time you start a new project video playback is always made simpler using the ninja 5 as opposed to doing it in camera it's really easy to select a file from the file list every time you click on a file its thumbnail will appear in the background and you can go ahead and play it just like you're doing record mode the monitoring mode allows you to use all your focusing and exposure aids additional to the playback menu you can also go into edit mode edit mode allows you to select a clip and set a in-and-out point or a favorite clip and then send out an XML straight to final cut so you have all your metadata ready to go having favorite clips and in and out points already selected saves hours and hours in the Edit just simply import your XML into Final Cut and you're ready to go canons autofocus system is arguably one of the best the ESR is no exception you have touched a focus here which gives you these beautiful focus pools combined this with love recording and 10-bit 4k and you've got yourself an affordable powerful setup he's an example of the autofocus in action this is a Canon 85 mil at one point for just walking in on our subject maintaining focus the whole way through the colors as you would expect are just fantastic straight out of the box very minimal effort to get shots like this looking so good this new canon like all other new full-frame mirrorless cameras on the market is limited in what it can record internally camera manufacturers are already pushing their design to the limits of computing heat and power consumption especially in these new large sensor mirrorless cameras by moving a recording to an external recorder like the ninja five mirrorless cameras are free from their limitations record time limits are lifted you get instant easy to edit Apple ProRes and avid Enix codecs to edit with less computing power 10 bit log recording improves color grading drastically I hope you enjoyed the set-up guide be sure to look out for more updates coming to your ninja 5 and Adam ask.com and thanks for watching
