hi this is russell stanley from teachertrainingvideos.com i did a presentation the other day where i included uh a series of search tips that teachers can use so that they can look for specific videos that they really want and i was surprised to see that teachers didn't realize that you could do this on youtube so for example you can look for videos that are less than four minutes long you can search for videos that have got subtitles that's really useful if you're a language teacher so what i've done in this video today is show you some of the best techniques that i use to help me to search for specific videos when i'm working on youtube and i'm also on the screen at the moment offering the link to the other video that's kind of twinned with this which is showing you 10 of the best techniques when working with youtube this video though is about the search techniques we're going to go through some of the best ones really hope you like the video as always if you do please like it please share it with other teachers please comment on it and also in the description i have kind of created a menu system so you can jump to a specific part of the video if you want let's get started so let's imagine i'm just going to show you a really effective way that i was going to search for the word chelsea now if i search for chelsea it's very likely to bring up loads of things to do with the football team but i'm actually interested in the chelsea flower show so what i'm going to do is i'm going to put chelsea gap minus football because i don't want anything to do with chelsea and football minus fc which means minus football club but i'm going to put plus and i'm going to write flower show and what i'm hoping is this is going to give me really specific search that won't bring up any connections to football but it will bring up connections to the flower show now the reason i'm doing this as well is because i'm always searching for things on about chelsea so i'm interested to see if youtube realizes okay in this specific moment even though i do normally look for things about chelsea football club it's the team i support i don't want to look for those now i want to look for something else let's see what happens if i now click on the search and as you see nothing comes up about chelsea football club i get loads and loads of things about chelsea flower show so using this plus and minus can be really useful and let's now put that in the context of say language teaching a lot of you who follow my work are language teachers and you're looking for content how could we use this minus and plus to help us to find the content we want okay let's just do a quick search for english voc food vocabulary in english and we get all of these ones here but now let's be a little bit more specific and decide with plus beginner because we are working with beginner students and we want lower level stuff let's press enter now does it bring up different content yes it does and we've got here for example beginners kids now remember the words could either be in the description and you can notice here it's picked it up or it could also be in the title now in a minute i'm going to show you specifically how to search in a title but the use of these plus and minus can really help us okay i mean i'm gonna just add here just in case it could even add add elementary okay and then it may try to pick up as well stuff with the word elementary in it okay it doesn't seem to have made a lot of difference in the search but you get the idea that by adding in these plus or minus remember we can be specific about what we don't want to find then it will help us to make our searches more specific now i'm going to combine a couple of techniques to just show you how powerful these searches are and how useful they can be i'm going to start by clicking on complaining in english so if you're an english teacher something that we commonly teach our students the first one looks fairly relevant the second and the third ones possibly not i'll know maybe the third one is so that's quite good we come down here but these ones aren't so useful okay so we want to be more specific so the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to add plus make sure you put a gap elt so that we're now getting english language teaching now these videos that we've got here are much better they're all really related to language learning and complaining but i only want short videos so i'm going to click here now and choose in the filters so choosing filters i'm going to only choose videos that are four minutes long because some of the videos there are five six eight minutes long so i only want short videos now i get videos about complaining in english elt that are less than four minutes however what i like is videos where i can also play around with the subtitles so i'm now going to click on filter again and i'm going to choose subtitles now this is great because it now brings up videos that have got subtitles on them now if we look at those videos some of them we can see that the subtitles are on the screen because they're actually added into the video sometimes the subtitles have been added as a script afterwards and this would be an example if i clicked on this one here we just played this for a minute okay now actually that's not on the video that is because i click here and in fact it's already activated so there's no problem and it's coming up onto the screen but i could if i wanted to turn that off and then it won't be there okay but if i'm in this case i do want it on and i want it in english so searching now for subtitles means it's only going to be complaining in english elt under four minutes with subtitles now the great thing when people have added up the transcript not that's not when the video the track subtitles are actually in the video but rather here they've been added afterwards is that we can even click on this lovely button down here and actually open the transcript on the right hand side and now we could even click on that transcript and jump to that part of the video and if we play the video okay and you can see that it actually shows you as you're going through the video now that only happens with videos where someone has added up the transcript afterwards or the transcript has been automatically generated by youtube i'm going to take you through that again because this is a really useful technique it's not only of course useful to english teachers it could be anything i generally work with english teachers and hence the reason i'm demonstrating this for finding english language learning content but of course it could be anything hi just a super quick interlude i hope you're enjoying the video and if you do please come over to teachertrainingvideos.com loads more free videos uh you'll get loads of stuff on the opening page and of course all these different topics here at the top and if you want to keep up with my work the best thing to do is sign up to the newsletter that way you get updated with all the latest videos the blog posts the webinars and the courses that i run and also at the moment if you sign up to the newsletter you will be sent a six part introduction into using technology in teaching and learning right let's get back to the video now you can actually search in the title so if you write in title and then you put a semicolon and then search so i'm going to say for example put here let's say um shopping in english okay and now if i click on that then i i'm gonna get those words in the title uh english shopping we can see it here english it's picked up shopping here so this doesn't require an order necessarily but it does require that that those words are in the title so using in title will search specifically in the title for the words that you're looking for now one thing that we can do is that we can search for playlists and playlists are useful because you get a whole collection of videos related to one particular topic now a lot of people use this for music so for example if i search for bob marley but then i put a comma and then write play list what i'm gonna get is playlists of or collections of videos we've got 74 videos and we can play one after the other now this can be really useful in language learning or in any educational area let's say let's take an example of history or let's say british history so we're going to write british history and see if there are any useful playlists that's collections of videos all based around the theme of history british history i press enter and suddenly i just get specifically collections of videos all around english history now you can use this for technology i often do this if i'm say for example looking for videos about zoom or videos about using google classroom then i will search for playlists because then i can work through a whole collection of videos related to that particular topic so that's a great way sometimes of searching for material if you're looking for lots of material based around a particular topic okay really hope you like that video please come over to teachertrainingvideos.com lots more free videos available you can sign up to the newsletter if you want to keep up with my new videos my blog posts my webinars and my online courses and of course
