what is up guys welcome back to the channel my name is travis this is twa motorsports and today we are working on something you guys have wanted to see for a while and that is the dod delete on the suburban i want to keep calling it tahoe i don't know why but on the suburban um you guys have said that you wanted to see what i'm going to do here as far as deleting the dod uh and dod guys is displacement on demand so kind of how it works is um you have a obviously eight cylinders on this and sorry it is a little windy today it's also freezing cold but you have eight cylinders obviously on both sides there are two cylinders that shut down on each side so a four cylinder four cylinders total shut down when it senses a loss and load on the engine now the computer controls all of that and what we're going to do is we are not going to be tearing the intake off we're not going to be taking the lifters out so if you guys tuned in to see that i'm sorry but we're going to do the electronical trick uh to get rid of this now there are two different options as far as electronic versions and i'll also list the stuff down below if you want to do the mechanical option but to me guys just shutting it off will prolong things it may not necessarily keep it from screwing up because what happens is those lifters fail over time and when they fail they wipe out the cam fill your engine full of a bunch of metal and then you have to start over with either a different engine or having one rebuilt sometimes you're lucky and you can clean it all out and not have to completely rebuild but that metal sneaks in everywhere and to be quite honest with you i probably would rebuild if that happened to me but i've had them in the past fail i haven't personally had them fail but i've had them failed on vehicles that i purchased and i've done a dod delete so like i said i'll list all that stuff down below if you want to mechanically delete that but it is quite a chore you do have to pull the heads off because the lifters are under the heads on an ls motor you cannot reach them from inside the intake like an old 350 but let's talk about what i'm going to be doing so i have hp tuners and so that's one of the methods that you can use to do this and i'm going to show you guys that method because that is what i have and it's relatively cheap for me because all i have to do is buy two credits in order to flash this and it's a permanent deal so um well it's not permanent i could flash it back if i wanted to but it's going to be more of a permanent thing the other option is they make a module that actually plugs in down here where we're going to be plugging in our cable in fact i'm going to go ahead and plug this guy in we'll that way we won't have to go through that step again but it will plug in right here and it has a light on it to let you know that it's completely plugged in and then when you're driving down the road if you notice on your instant mile per gallon you'll have a v4 and a v8 and that's how you'll know if you can't feel it generally if i close my eyes i can actually fill it when it goes into well when it drops off those cylinders when it goes into four cylinder mode and um because it has a little bit of a shimmy to it and so anyway if you don't know that's where it's at and i'll show you that once we get the thing started up but that module while it is cool and it is cheaper if you don't have an hp tuner's cable and i'll list it below as well um there's it could run your battery dead because it does have a light on it stays on all the time and it also you could kick it with your foot getting in and out of the car and this is just more of a permanent solution to doing this as opposed to like i said that module but i'm gonna go grab my laptop and i do not have the credits so i'm gonna walk you guys through what i'm going to do to purchase them how i'm going to go in and change it and kind of the whole step by step i wish that well i don't wish this but if i had one here i wish i had a lifter to show you guys what they look like they have a little spring on the bottom like i said but um if it ever fails i obviously will show you guys a video of me replacing it but it is kind of one of those things that some of these go 20 000 miles and then have an issue and some of them go like 300 000 miles and never have a problem so it's kind of a it's kind of random whether you get um a failure on the lifters or not but it is going to happen if you have it long enough i will tell you that and this just kind of prolongs the life of those so let's go get the laptop and get it hooked up and we'll talk about what's next so at this point i've got my laptop over here and i've got the car in the run position i'm going to go ahead and start it because i'm going to show you guys where you can see the v4 or v8 when you're driving down the road so if you click to instant economy you can see it says v8 there you will notice when it switches to four cylinder mode that will show v4 so just wanted to show you guys that i'm going to go ahead and turn it off at this point and turn the key back to the run position the other thing i'm going to do is make sure your radio is off no extra accessories are running and then you need to make sure that you see a power light before we actually plug into the laptop so you can see it says power there that is good that means we have power to the port down below which you do need and now we can plug into our laptop if i can find and i've got hp tuners open i'm going to close it this is basically your landing page if you go up to the top there is if you see another file here there's other stuff highlighted if you go to file and close and that will open you a new window for some reason if you've used it on another vehicle it opens in the last thing you used so now that we've got that we can click on the top which is read and we can go that what's actually connection but then we can go down here and click read and it should read this thing and the only things that i'm really wanting to read are the actual vehicle itself you can see it tells me it's a 2001 suburban 5.3 it's going to read it looks like the fuel controller it's going to read the transmission that's what tcm is and then the ecm which is what we are actually going to mess with so if you click in here you don't have to read the entire um you don't need to really read the transmission or the fuel so that's just something that automatically is set to do it's not a big deal if it does it however when you go to flash it takes an extra two credits i believe to do the fuel controller so just make sure that if you when you buy credits you don't you don't have to buy more than two just to do what we're doing i did go ahead and select the bottom one to not read i can also do the transmission to not read as well while it's reading just the ecm because that's all we need to really mess with and we're getting close 19 seconds left and once this finishes you'll hear probably the fuel pump click on or you'll hear some relays clicking within the car hopefully you guys heard that so we're finished at this point i am going to i like to save the stock file so i'll just put like stock suburban and then i'll show you guys what we're going to open and change so i have my stock file saved here and we're going to go up to engine you can see our tabs across the top hopefully you guys can see that we're going to click on engine once engine opens there's a several other tabs here we're going to go to fuel and then there's tabs underneath fuel and there's so general oxygen sensor open loop power enrich temperature control cut off and then the very next to last actually third from the last here is lean and fuel savings so once you click on that you're going to see displacement on demand and this is all the uh requirements that it has to see in order to engage this so hp tuners makes it really really easy because right now you see it's enabled all we have to do is go to disable and once we do that it is not going to look for any of these metrics or parameters in order to shut this off so that is it guys it's one click once you get into the correct table which is under engine fuel and then lean and fuel savings so like i said displacement on demand change enable to disable and now what i'm going to do is i'm going to you can see that i've changed it because it lights up in a different color i'm going to go to file i'm going to go to save as and then i'm just going to save it as a dod delete suburban just whatever it file extension i mean it's going to file extension is going to be hpt for hp tuners but you could see once i tried to save it it's asking me to um i don't have any credits it says you did not have a license for this file so show the license options and we don't have any so i have zero credits available so what i'm going to need to do is purchase credits so i'll click ok and what i generally do guys is i go on to hp tuners website and buy them directly but i thought that gave me the option to open it from here let's try this again purchase credits online i guess i need to actually click the purchase credits online hyperlink here we're going to open it with chrome and i guess i don't have internet this far out i'm going to have to go get some internet connection so we got internet connection now and i'm going to type in if you guys don't have an account you do need to register with your account information i think that it's already here of course my password's not right i'll have to relog in anyway so i'm going to type my password in and then we'll click log in so what i'm going to do now is once i get in here i'm going to add credit and it probably will ask me how many and we're going to need two and they're gm credits so i'm going to select two and we're gonna go we're gonna have to pay for them so i won't show you guys that i don't need to show you guys my credit card so if i hit add it's ready to pay so i will go through that process and then we will load [Music] we'll load them onto the cable it should automatically because we are all hooked up and we clicked on that link but if i have any issues i will show you guys so of course it's not making it easy on me so once i did that i got an email and so we have to go up in here to tools and then actually help sorry help and then mbi keys and we have to type the new one in here because for some reason it doesn't automatically pull it across so what we're going to do is they will email you a big long code that you're going to have to add here and that will give us the credits that we need so i'm going to go ahead and add that and then we'll be able to save it and actually flash it into the vehicle now that i've got that saved we're going to try to save the file again so i saved the new product key so we'll go to save as it's going to show license options and then it should okay so you can see right here it asking me if i want to use these two credits so yes i do want to use the two credits on this vehicle so and it's telling you what vehicle you're using it on so make sure that this is the vehicle that you do indeed want to license you can check the van if you'd like which is listed up here at the top or the serial number or um you can obviously see it's a 2001 suburban i have had in the past guys if you're trying to copy off of another file where i've licensed the wrong file so i licensed the one i was trying to copy which didn't help me so be very careful and it's going to tell you you can see it's flashing attention up top you're getting ready to spend a hundred dollars make sure that this is exactly what you want so yes we do want to do that so i'm hitting okay are you sure yes i'm sure and so now it's going to allow me to save this and like i said i'm going to just call it dod delete and if you ever wanted to revert back you can doesn't cost you anything and now we have license for this vehicle forever so anything we want to do to it um if we want to change the rear tires and they're bigger or smaller we can change it for that if we want to change gears if we want to actually put a blower on this or tune it or a cam or any of that stuff we have access to this going forward forever so i'm going to save it as dod delete for now because i don't have any other things i'm wanting to change and then hit save and it is saving that file now all we have to do is we need to turn the key back on you can see it's on the run position not starting the car and we are going to go to flash or right vehicle so you can see it's up here at the top and we are going to write this new file and i'm only going to write the calibration you have the ability to write entire write calibration um i generally use write calibration unless it's like a a big file that like a tuner is starting from scratch i might use um write and tire on that but as far as like little changes like this i always use right calibration only you can see that it's loading and writing and generally it takes uh sometimes it takes five minutes sometimes it takes two minutes saying here it's only going to take 40 seconds same thing here you might hear the fuel pump kick on or some relays clicking once you get finished here 18 seconds getting close you can hear it all clicking so it's complete all we need to do is close and i'm going to completely close out of this and we're going to shut the key off and then we're going to start it back up making sure we have no issues no lights of course i had the hood open i was going to hook up a charger because this battery is kind of weak but i didn't that's another thing guys you want to make sure you got a good battery so uh what we're gonna do is i'm gonna close the hood and we'll go down the road and see if we can get that to uh light up v4 it shouldn't be doing that but we're gonna test it so obviously it says v8 and we're really gonna have to get it out on the highway probably in order to get it to try to click over to four cylinder generally it doesn't do it when we're going really slow oh i need to put my seatbelt on i don't know if i can do that got it all right let's see so at this speed generally if i let off and just coasted it would go it would be in four cylinder mode already so we got it [Music] you can see that the mile per gallon goes up because i let off the gas but it didn't flip over to four cylinder mode which means that those things aren't shutting off let off completely again we're going to coast we'll take it one spot down the highway here get it up to like 60 miles an hour and make sure that we're still not having it click over you can also use your scanning software on hp tuners to look for misfires they'll be hidden but you can still see them if you log it and go back and look at that i'm not going to get into that because to me this is the easiest way to see exactly what's going on i don't know if you guys just saw there was a deer that just jumped across into these crazy it's that time of year all right we'll get on the highway and test it one more time so we're getting out on the highway now so we'll get up to like 60 or 70. and uh we're just gonna sit here and watch this obviously when you're in it as far as the gas mileage looks pretty rough at six miles per gallon but we'll get up to like 60 70 miles an hour and completely let out of the gas which it would immediately click over in four-cylinder mode if you did that so we got up to what 65 now when we get over this hill here i'll let completely out so i am completely out of the gas and you can see it is staying in v8 mode so we have completely bypassed the fact that it's going to shut off those cylinders that is awesome exactly what we wanted back in the gas now you can obviously see when i get in the gas where the uh mile per gallon goes and we'll let off one more time yeah it is not going to go in four cylinder mode anymore well we are back and everything went great i've got the laptop and the cable unplugged um mine is an older version guys i've had this for about 15 years probably and the newer version of hp tuners that i'm going to list in the description down below will actually be just the box and a module that plugs in i think it works off bluetooth or wi-fi because they no longer actually make the cable and i probably need to upgrade at some point the hp tuners has an exchange program where you can then send them your cable and it'll they'll put all the vends that you've ever licensed on here but um i've got it sitting on my car the good news is it doesn't scratch cars when you put it on cars like this anyway so we're all finished up and um like i said guys there's two different ways and if you do the module the little module that plugs in uh they're around 200 bucks obviously hp tuners is around 600 now if you buy it for 600 bucks it does come with eight credits i believe out of the box so you're not having to do what i did to go into buy credits but i was just wanted to show you guys uh pretty detailed as far as what's involved in doing this and hopefully i didn't bore you guys to death but if anybody's looking to do this or has a friend that has hp tuners and you just want to flip them 100 bucks get them to turn it off for you that may be your best option as well but i will list that other deal down there like i said i think it's around 200 and uh this whole setup would be if you didn't have a laptop obviously you had to buy more stuff but 600 bucks for hp tuners i believe and if you ever have an issue where it fails that module really isn't the best option um because you're going to have to tune it after you take the old cam out uh you can't use the factory cam if you took all the dod stuff off when we replace the lifters you actually have to replace the cam as well and so if this ever fails guys i honestly i will make a video you guys know that i'll make a video on this we'll show you how to pull it all apart and do the mechanical side of things but for now i think this will prolong the life of this engine and keep that thing from clicking on and off while we're driving down the road which is what i wanted and i what i wanted to show you guys anyway so if you guys like this video if
