so this gives you an idea of the difference between a factory style lifter and a DOD lifter much much longer we're also going to have to change the lifter trays hello I'm Richard holder and welcome to the channel I'm at westtech performance and what's that you say you've gone to the wrecking yard you've selected a motor you're going to build up for your race car you've got a cool aluminum LS but Richard it has active fuel management how do I take care of the active fuel management so I can put a cam shaft in or intake manifold or cylinder heads for my race car you're in luck I've never done a video like this but I'm going to show you how to install the Brian tool erasing active fuel management conversion kit that's right not only am I going to show you step by step how to install it I'm also going to include three different options along with that I'm going to show you how to swap the cam shaft so you can make more power for your race car by the way that I mentioned our mockup mod motor is actually broke there's another video up on that but let's Jump Right In and convert over our AFM lh6 we're going to install an AFM DOD delete kit from the guys at Brian Tully racing and basically what is a DOD what is an AFM delete well the way that it works on the factory gmls Motors is DoD and AFM what they're doing is allowing oil pressure to bleed away from the lifter making the lifter inactive basically and then they also turn off fuel so they're basically trying to get the V8 to run as a four-cylinder and get better mileage now during the during the normal drive cycle where they actually measures this it probably does help but a lot of guys still complain about the fuel mileage on these things anyway the problem is when we're installing a performance cam shaft we definitely want to get rid of that and so there are basically three things that we can use to do that Brian Tuli sells these little plugs I'm going go ahead and show you where they go in the lifter Valley there in the valley there we can plug the holes that basically bleed that oil pressure off you can also use a different Valley cover like this very cool ability one chalk full ability goodness from the guys at ICT you can see they have Provisions for O-rings that's this right here and what they do is the same thing when you install this plate it covers up those holes so it doesn't allow that oil pressure to bleed out away from the lifter the other way GM also makes a direct replacement for that that you can put on but when you're doing that you also have to take the cylinder heads off and it's not a big deal you're going to be changing the cam shaft anyway but you got to take the cylinder heads off to access the lifters there are eight DOD lifters and at least those eight need to be replaced let's face it if this is a very high mileage LS probably a good idea to replace all 16 of lifters just put standard lifters in with standard lifter trays bolt those in and get rid of our put our cool plate on or our plug get rid of dood delete install a good performance cam chef so that's exactly what we're going to do we've got an all aluminum l86 so let's Jump Right In and tear it apart okay we're going to jump right in and do our deep and we need access to this DOD Valley cover so first we need to pull off the intake manifold let's do that now so next we're going to pull the valley cover lot of stuff going on there lots of solenoid stuff so the least expensive route is to take these plugs and you can see we'll zoom in here put them in there and then we'll just tap those down we're actually going to put the ICT Billet piece on there cuz it's awesome but first we've got to prep it okay got our gaskets all in place and our O-rings now ready to install let's see that's going to line up over here got our counter sunk bolts now we got our Valley cover on time to change the lifters first thing we'll do is get the coil pack out of the way all I'm going to take off the exhaust manifold I'm a little concerned a lot of times when you're taking these off one at least one or two of them will break off in the head these actually all seem to be pretty good oh this one might be okay so see if we can't Buzz this off wow this is a [Applause] treat yeah so now pull off these steam crossovers now the valve cover we'll start with the rocker arms I like to loosen them with a ratchet first and not hit them with a gun man that's pretty tight and the push rodes take we got the top head bolt so I'm going to use this to break the heads free with everything unbolded just pull the head off now we'll move the head gasket to get access to the lifter trays so we can pull out the dod lifters and I'll be able to show you what they look like DOD lifters are very long you can see inside there I'll pull out a standard lifter and show you as a comparison pull out this side so this gives you an idea of the difference between a factory style lifter and the dod lifter much much longer we're also going to have to change the lifter trays those are included by the guys from Brian Chuli racing so we'll install new lifters our kit from Brian Chuli racing included a fresh set of Deli LS7 lifters all packaged up nicely along with complete instructions on the care prior to assembly make sure you read it and follow the instructions placing the lifter is very easy load them up this Notch to miss this they're all oiled ready to go so you repeat that procedure for every side we're going to put our lifter tray bolts back in now we're ready for the new head gasket supplied by Brian to racing this one actually looks like it's still in pretty good shape normally I clean these with a razor blade a little bit blow it all off new head gasket put the head back on clean the bottom side of the head too you're ready ready to go now it's time to tackle the cam shaft pretty tough pop in a new battery let's see what happens it's all fresh look at this got four bars yeah there we go got a three job puller see if this [Music] cooperates taada now pop off the front cover now I'm going to rotate this thing around so it's at TDC so I've installed the factory bolt but I put a little spacer on there now pour the cam gear now the cam retaining plate now all you have to do swap the cam slide in the new cam this is our BTR cam line everything up put it back together and you're ready to go okay after you you installed your cam shaft you want to make sure you're at number one TDC and you want to make sure this Mark on the cam sprocket lines up with a corresponding dot on the crank sprocket when you do that with number one at TDC it's good to go okay guys I hope you like our stepbystep AFM DOD conversion kit let me know in the comments which one would you pick would you go ultra low book maybe just put in the plugs would you step up to the factory GM you know with the confidence of GM Valley cover plate with the O-rings or would you step all the way up to the ICT with all the ability goodness arate your holder please make sure like share subscribe ring the bell do all that stuff more videos like this coming up
