hello and welcome to Vancouver carpenter today I'm gonna teach you guys how I like to prep a flat ceiling for paint so any experienced painter knows that almost all of the work is in the prep and actually rolling the paint on is kind of a short part of the work to finish my sentence anyways let's get right into what this work is now I like to pull these right out when painting it drives me crazy having to paint around things because I can't just roll across this right now I'm gonna have to uh who tightened this oh I'm actually tightening it right now that's who tightened it oops there we go but now I can roll directly over this which is gonna really speed up the process and make sure I don't get any dry edges now that you have everything protected and all the pot light trims or anything else taken down off the ceiling or taped around the next thing you want to do is you're going to want to look for all the deficiencies in your ceiling with a light before you start to actually paint I will often tag them with a piece of tape so that I can find them again after okay first thing I need to do is I need to sand down some of these brutal roller lines that somebody left here next I'm gonna start filling everything for filling I'm just using light all-purpose drywall mud this is just your homeowner special we're ready filler I really like light all-purpose mud for this because it sands really easy it's cheap and you can get lots of it and use it for lots of other things another quick little tip here you guys is you can actually tint your mud a little bit to make it easier to find on the ceiling or wall with blue chalk but don't use any other color blue chalk won't come through your paint but other colors might or will I also don't thin it down at all I like it to be the full thickness that it comes in so this little bit of blue in there is just going to make it easier to find before I have to sand it and now it's the fun part where I try to make sure I actually find everything I already found but at least I can find it easily after because of the gluten faux finish the whole ceiling I try to leave a little bit of material on for sanding so I don't have to feel anything twice one of the downsides to using a drywall might is that it can take a little longer to dry but you know as a contractor we often have air circulating fans so that'll get it dry pretty quick the next thing I'm gonna do is sand all the drywall filler I put on the ceiling so I'm just using this foam backed 150 so now we're just getting into basically sanding drywall and I'll sponge out all the little bits of details with this guy now I'm now gonna be spot priming with sinter one two three water-based so this is a really good primer sealer I like this because you know it works really well in combination with the drywall mud it does a good job of actually sealing it so then it's not gonna flash later which means you know see your patch because of some weird chemistry thing I don't understand I'm going to be using a 3/8 roller to spot prime everything now I've got some big areas so you don't need to use something this big you can use a small thing if you just have a bunch of little patches you could even use a four inch roller in a little tray next find all your patches and prime them and you don't have to prime it too thick especially cuz I actually want to paint this today so some folks might be wondering why I do the take and tint my mother Wow I just find the tape helps me find it really quickly and the tinted mud ensures that I see it once I get there so I don't find it to be particularly redundant find it to be pretty effective I'm even going to prime around all these pot light holes because they were just recently cut in so the paper is all loose and nasty so when I roll up this ceiling with my finished paint I want all the crusties around the edge sealed in so that I can just roll over these without getting a bunch of boogers I'm just pushing right into the edge here get any of my patches that were again to the edge quick brush in that corner just crisp it up Oh missed one that's why I do it ELPS being six foot one I mean it still hurts my neck but I can reach it we are almost done but the last thing I am going to do before getting ready to paint this whole ceiling is give it a quick sand to knock down any of the buggers that were left by the people who primed the ceiling and they are plentiful first I'm gonna run around the corners with this you know 100 grit on a pole and I'm just gonna brush them out real quick to smooth down anything that was left and lastly it's sanding time so I've got one of these radius 360s these things are great for this stage because they cover a lot of area so I've got 120 on here right now and it's just once across the whole room and that's it your ceiling is finally ready for the finished coats of paint so I hope you guys got something useful out of this I know there's a lot of tips in there that you can take away let me know what your methods are you can kind of switch around some of the sanding and filling stuff like a lot of the time when painters come into a house the first thing they do is sand all of the walls with pretty rough sandpaper to knock everything down and then they might get to filling so you can kind of swap around the order of things a tiny bit but if you do follow this order and this method you are going to get very good results anyways thank you for watching Vancouver carpenter I hope you guys got something out of this I sure I just said that right before I said all those other things videos done let's not drag this one out have a good one you guys
