this is how you play the game patchwork patchwork is a game for two players in which you buy these tiles and place them on your board so that they interconnect in an effort to cover up all the empty spaces on your player board you pay for the tiles in buttons and in time you track the passage of time with this center board and eventually when both players reach the middle the game ends and the person with the most buttons wins the game this is how you set up the game first you put this center board somewhere in the middle where both players can reach it there's actually two sides to it and they play exactly the same they just have different look so you should pick the one that you like the two player markers go in this starting area right here one for the green player one for the yellow player then you load the board with a number of these leather tiles these are these little single tiles here you don't have to match color with color or anything like that you just put those in these spaces that are marked next you randomly arranged all of these tiles in a single file and you actually kind of want to make them loop around it doesn't really matter what shape they're they're all and they just need to be in single file order in this arrangement you come around this side and then this piece here continues over onto this side and then it goes around clockwise next you take this special tile and just have it somewhere nearby this is for a special bonus scoring which we will talk about in a bit you've got the two player boards here one for yellow one for green identify this piece right here which is a two by one and it could be anywhere and just to the right of it or just clockwise of it you put this neutral token here this marker right there you have a bank or a pool of buttons here in the middle that's easily too easy to reach and each player starts with five buttons then you identify someone as the starting player and you're ready to go the object of the game is to have the most buttons by the time both players the center of the time track your supply of buttons is going to be impacted by the number of empty spaces on your player board so what you want to try to do is fill your player board as much as possible cover all the empty spaces using all these piles that you see here now you're going to obtain these tiles by paying their cost and their cost is printed on the tile itself there will be oftentimes a button cost as you can see this piece is five buttons but also a cost in time this one costs for time once you've purchased a piece you immediately place it anywhere on your player board so that all the squares match up you cannot over hang the board like that you also cannot put a piece on top of another piece like say like that so it needs to be flat to the board but otherwise you can orient the pieces any way that you want again one of the goals is you're trying to cover up as many of these spaces as possible there are two things that you can do in your turn one is you can advance on the board and collect buttons we'll talk about that more in a moment but usually what you're going to be doing is you're going to be buying tiles so that you can put them on your board to cover up spaces and also to generate button income for yourself now the tiles that are available for purchase are the three tiles to the right or in clockwise order past the neutral token marker so in this example these three tiles here are the ones that are available this tile cost six buttons and five time this tile costs four buttons in to time and this one costs two buttons and two time now at the start of the game you start with five buttons so clearly yellow can't afford this piece but could afford one of these two pieces so let's imagine for a moment that they go ahead and buy this piece here so what you do is you choose the tile that you want move the marker next to that tile and then you pay for that tile in this case four buttons and two time so here are the four buttons they go into the bank just like that and then you pay for the to time on the time tracking board so what that means is you take the yellow marker in this case and you go one two spaces take the tile you just bought and immediately place it on your board in any valid position let's say like that so yellow moved ahead two spaces ahead of green in order to pay for that tile in patchwork whoever is trailing behind is always the next player to go and in some cases you may have multiple turns in a row it's whoever is in back if at any point you are in the same space whoever is on top in other words the last person to go into that space is still the one who gets to go so again if you're trailing behind or if you're on top you get to play no matter how many turns that takes so over here in the market place you move the neutral token over to where that tile used to be and what that does is it makes the next three tiles available for sale for the current player so in this case on greens turn they'll have available to them this beats for two buttons this piece for three buttons or this piece for ten buttons as well as the time that's printed on there by the way I should mention that there's at least one tile here that doesn't have any cost in buttons but there's only a cost in time so just be sure to read the label on there so that you know what to pay for the tile that you want so let's continue this example and it's greens turn because they're trailing behind they've got three pieces available to them let's say they're going to buy this piece here so you move them touken next to that piece you pay for that piece in this case three buttons and two time three buttons one two in time you're on top of yellow here then you take the tile that you just bought and place it on your board anywhere that you like in any orientation you want you can start anywhere and you can start in the corner or whatever your heart desires and then the neutral token marks the new space and the marketplace now has three more tiles available all right so since green is still the active player because they're on top of yellow they're gonna go ahead and take a look at what's available in the marketplace now as you remove tiles it is possible to shrink the path of tiles and there's nothing wrong with that just make sure to keep them in the same order they still need to be single-file one right after the other so right now Green has two buttons available to them and we've got some expensive tiles here this one costing 10 buttons and some time this one costs 8 buttons and some time and this one costs 2 buttons and 2 time so you may be wondering why are these tiles so expensive in buttons and time in the case of this one and this one is so inexpensive well there's a couple reasons one is that these are larger tiles they cover more area and if you may recall at the end of the game every single square that you have that's not covered is going to be - two buttons from your pool so this helps cover a larger area but there's another important thing that we're about to encounter here which are these printed buttons that are on these tiles those are actually income-generating buttons when ever any tile has a button that's printed on the tile and it's in your player board every time you cross one of these buttons on the time track you're gonna receive income equal to the number of buttons on your board they come right from the bank go right to you so as you can imagine this tile here that costs 8 buttons and six time it's expensive but look at the area that it covers and look every time you skip over one of these buttons on the time track you're gonna pay yourself three buttons for having this tile now that's all well and good right now but green is very poor in buttons so they can't afford either of these two the only one they could afford right now is this one so let's say we mark that one they're gonna pay two buttons and two time one two and then they're gonna take this piece and place it wherever they'd like to place it now the neutral marker marks the new spot and we've got three new tiles available for sale now I'm gonna just mention real quick a little strategic note because as you get more and more used to playing the game you're gonna realize that there are things you can do so let's pretend this is the situation right right now you have a something that costs two buttons doesn't generate any income for you this gigantic one here that costs eight and generates three and then this one that's sort of you know that's you know it's not bad actually it has one button income generation and it covers a wider area than this one so let's imagine that you were the active player and you had to decide which one of these to Phi and you're able to look at your opponent's board and you may be able to realize a couple things let's pretend that they had enough but let's say they had 20 buttons sitting here this is a marker that this is a marker that says 20 buttons they've got 20 buttons and you've got a measly let's say five so you know you can't afford this one you'd like to buy it but you can't afford it you could buy this one or you could buy this one take a look at your players board and realize that they have enough buttons to buy this one and they might be motivated they might actually have a shape that would that would fit in perfectly so one of the things you can do is deny them this tile at least for right now instead of buying this one and only spending two buttons you could buy this one instead paying your three buttons getting a little income for it but in this case more importantly perhaps skipping over that tile that you know your opponent wants because as we explain the next three tiles are the ones that are available for purchase so you start to get into a little strategic thing to where you can actually not only get tiles the you want but deny your opponent from buying tiles that you think that they want now you don't have to go that deep if you don't want to I mean you can just buy the tiles that you like but over time you start to get used to it and you might start making some of those choices okay so to continue in our basic example and I just I just put the tiles back they weren't exactly the way they were but let's just say it's yellows turn right now actually we know it's yellows turn because they're the one trailing behind yellow has one button to spend and three tiles to choose from one costing three one eight and one two so clearly they can't afford to buy a tile so therefore they must advance and gain buttons that's the only thing they can do remember at any time you can just choose to do that but typically if you can afford to buy tiles you usually want to buy them so in this case because yellow has no choice they're going to advance and gain buttons and the way that you advance is you move one two in this case three spaces until you're just on the other side of your opponent and then you pay yourself that many buttons so in this case three buttons go to yellow now you notice that yellow did cross a line with a button on there but unfortunately as you can tell from their board they don't have any tiles that have button income-generating icons on them so they're not going to get paid anything more so yellow really wants to get some tiles that have buttons on them so they can make some money doing this move where you advance and make money that way it's not very Finch efficient and if the two players are very close together you're never going to get more than two to four buttons so unless you're really far apart it's not really an ideal way to make buttons now when that action is taken naturally your opponent becomes the active player because by definition you have to go one space further so now it's a greens turn I do want to point out on this track by the way that it is a spiral so make sure you don't get too lost in it and forget where you are you're spiraling all the way into the middle when both players reach the middle the game is over and you tally up your buttons we'll go into that in a moment keep in mind that when you're going to the end if you're paying for a tile that uses a lot of time like say this one six if you're near the end and you don't have enough spaces just pay as much time as you have room for and then stop you don't have to go beyond that so now it's greens turn taking a look at their available funds and the tiles available if they want to buy a tile the only one they could buy is this one it's the only one that can afford so let's say they're gonna do that place this tile wherever they'd like pay the cost in time one two and again that time we went to spaces because of the cost in time not because of the advance and gain buttons move but doing that green did cross one of those button markers so looking at their board they look to see how many buttons they have in this case they have one button so they gain the income of one button for crossing over that spot I want to make clear that these button icons on the time track they're not spaces they're actually on the lines between spaces so you're always crossing over them okay so I advanced things just a little bit its yellows turn because yellow is trailing behind and they're gonna buy this piece here for three buttons which is exactly what they have and six time before I do that though I'm going to move the marker over to here because this is where that piece was again the layout that I have here it can be different for you I just in order to conserve space for the video I just skip from here over to here but we do continue in clockwise direction all right so we need to pay the time for this which in this case it's six that's a six right side up there so yellow is going to go one two three four five six to pay for that now they did cross over a button marker so this time yellow is happy because they finally have some income-generating tiles on their board so they're going to get three buttons for the three pictured buttons on the tile on the tiles let's see it screens turn Green has available a few choices here two buttons two buttons seven buttons it's an expensive piece they only have four so what are they gonna go for neither of these are income-generating but let's say that he's gonna buy this one pay two and two and they're gonna use it to fill this space remember you can turn the tiles over you can turn them in any direction just remember you can't overhang and you can't overlap existing tiles so let's put that like that and they need to paint two buttons two time one two green is still trailing so it is greens turn again we have a seven cost a two cost and a five cost well the most they they could buy is this to cost one but let's say they're gonna actually do the advanced motion for advanced in-game buttons for some reason let's say they didn't want to buy these so green can go one two three four get paid for buttons I'm gonna grab this five piece here and make change for one and they also crossed over a button on the board so they get paid one extra because of the one on their on their tile on their board okay now I rearranged things a little bit here so that I can tell you a little bit about these leather pieces remember at the very beginning we set up we put these little 1 by 1 squares on the space as indicated on the board just like the buttons those spaces actually it's not truly a space it's actually a graphic that's on the line so it is something else that you're gonna cross over so let's imagine for a moment that yellow just purchased a piece and they're gonna pay three time in this example so yellow is going to go one two three so they move over the leather piece what yellow does then is they immediately take this leather piece and they must put it on their board right way you can't save these up so these little 1x1 pieces are pretty handy because they can be used to patch up mistakes you've made or just inconvenient Arrangements on your board so for example here I've I've set this up so that there's a hole right here in the middle that leather piece can go in there and patch that up very nicely just like that so again that's two points that you're gonna prevent from losing at the end of the game in other words you've covered up a space that would otherwise be minus two points at the end it's a good idea to keep an eye on your opponent's board to look for situations where they may need to patch a single space like that because you might be in a position to deny them that leather piece so that's just another strategic point I wanted to make earlier you were denying I'm a tile that they wanted by buying something on the other side of it here you might want to buy something so that you deliberately cross over another leather piece so that you can get this piece instead of your opponents so that's just something to keep in mind as well okay so I've advanced things a little bit here as you can see there are fewer tiles available and I just keep sort of bringing sort of bringing them in so they're just easier to keep track of and we've moved along the track we're getting closer and closer to that Center in game condition here yellow has some button generating income for them in this case every time they cross over a button with this layout here they're gonna get one two three four five six seven eight nine buttons coming to them so you see they got a little bit more of a pool of buttons to choose from over here in green side they also have a whole bunch of buttons available to them every time they cross over an income spot they're gonna get one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen buttons but there's something else important going on over here on greens for that I want to talk about remember during setup we put this one special piece here that says seven by seven and then seven buttons this is a bonus tile that you are able to take immediately when you put down a tile that completes a seven by seven continuous square as soon as a player lays down final tile that completes a seven by seven block they can take this bonus tile right away now you'll notice here that this goes one two three four five six seven it's a little bit of overhang here but that's okay this way we go one two three four five six seven same thing a little bit of overhang on that side it doesn't matter if it overhangs as long as there's a seven by seven area that is fully covered and notice that they made use of leather tiles to make that happen as well as thinking ahead about what pieces they wanted to buy so that they could have this area complete and get the bonus seven points where they are on the player board doesn't matter either so for example this whole thing could be shifted over this way and that's okay because it's still seven by seven so where this is on the board doesn't matter at all you just need to have them fully covered in a seven by seven area okay so here we reach the end of the game or nearly yellow has already reached the finishing spot so yellow paint themselves one last time got buttons and now they're just waiting for green to finish Green just bought a tile that let's say this one here which is six in time so we're gonna advance one two and then stop even though you advance six there's no room to go six so you just stop right at the very end you do pay yourself one last time when you cross that threshold so in this case Green is going to get thirteen buttons because they have one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen buttons on their board so we're gonna throw this into the pot here all right now you just need to do endgame scoring so what you're going to do is count up every single empty space and multiply that by two because you lose two points or two buttons for every one of these empty space so here yellow has 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 22 empty spaces so 44 so even though they're looking to say well look I got this 20 piece and a couple you know 10 and they're gonna lose 40 four pieces so there's 20 30 35 40 41 they're at negative 3 points because they didn't do a good job of covering this area they were making money they just weren't strategic with the placement there so - 3 points for yellow over on this side it's kind of a better story for green 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 17 times 234 so you can put back these three here that's 30 going back for going back and what green is left with is 6 plus 7 13 points so the final score is 13 - negative 3 I think it was right yeah so green wins the game now the points on this I played this a few times and they can be kind of wacky sometimes and they can sneak up on you until you get more used to playing the game the first game that I played actually both players had negative scores so don't be surprised if that happens to you as well but but over time you'll get the hang of it and hopefully you'll
