this is a 1984 Chevy k20 even though the fender says 10 SM 465 trans we took out the small-block Chevy 350 and are going to be installing a 5.3 liter LS based small-block so this is a 2002 Chevy 5.3 I've never heard it run but I bought it cheap and complete as you see it has EGR we're gonna strip it down see what it looks like okay we got the motor pretty much stripped down we're gonna pull the valve covers off and see if this is a sludge puppy or not but a lot of these last motors break the manifold bolts so we will do a quick video on extracting those at least the way that I do it normally it works pretty well sometimes you got to do it a couple times for bolt [Music] [Music] [Music] there you go just by a better impact on this motor looks like it has sat for a very very long time although he said there's only a hundred two thousand miles on it we will see what the inside looks like somebody's overhead they're known for cracking and then they slug up robot they don't look too bad these are 860 twos and these are the four broken manifold bolts that we welded nuts to to remove okay so what I'm doing is like I said I have never seen this thing run and I drove it home in a huge rainstorm and one cylinder over here got some water in it so I'm just gonna take all the spark plugs out I'm just gonna crank it over to shoot the water out I bore scoped it it doesn't look like there's any rust or anything in it but oh no did I put the drain plug in no put the drain plug in before you put oil in and I'm just gonna crank it over but no plugs in it see how it sounds when you get the water out see what happens [Applause] what happens is you make a gigantic mess because there's no oil filter and it uh clearly pumped oil though a little water that's sprayed out you may or may not of seen so I just want to get the water out and I'm probably gonna have to harness up and start it right here where it's sitting make sure it runs good okay so this motor has compression from 30 up to 180 they're all over the place that whole right bank is 60 120 30 90 so that's really bad I not sure if it's just from sitting and the rings are stuck or what but I'm gonna do a the 30 psi cylinder and then I'm gonna spray some oil in it see what that does yeah not even 30 like nothing so maybe a bow stuff or something but spray some oil down the cylinder to see if that makes a difference [Music] a little better not much about 45 so I'm not sure wasn't thinking this motor just put it together and run it to see what it does the plugs all look flying they look like they're burning evenly so leads me to believe that the thing was running okay the guy said it was said he drove it to his house so who knows maybe I'll just have to harness up and try and run it okay so like I said I had compression from 30 psi to 180 this thing's been sitting a long time the plugs looked really good which leads me to believe that it wasn't down on compression because it would have been oiled following plugs or something so I got everything hooked up real get alike but power to the main terminal and connect their c9 powered up and I have a super safe makeshift fuel system there's a pump in there with a return and we're gonna try and start it just to see if I can get it running and then do another compression test get some oil up in the cylinders and get the valves to clean up a little bit so here we go something doesn't seem to be hooked up right there was a lot of rpms Oh [Music] zwei after running it we're going to test cylinder number or whatever this is the one that had 30 psi so I'll be cranking over again and see what it has now that we ran it's upside down but you're about 150 so I'll check the rest of them you can see it cleaned up quite nicely okay some of these manifolds have a pore here you can see the bolts broken off I'm not going to use that so I'm gonna go ahead and plug it I'm gonna use the half a 14 pipe plug or pipe tap throat it and then put a half 14 just like that I'm gonna take it back out and do it a little more to thread it in a little deeper but you get the idea blow it out good before I put it in for the final time okay so I pulled up some adapter plates to mount the original square body truck clam shells to and this is the bell housing from the SM 465 which is still in the truck so this is all just temporarily locked up and we're going to drop it in see how it fits or doesn't fit [Music] okay a test-fit of the engine took it back out now I put the flywheel on it's a sax 1050 in a loo clock whatever you call it Oh 400 sixty-four clutch there's a couple different combinations people use it's got a LS 2 you can't see it unless to type pilot bearing different people use different combinations I would not recommend this again because you have to think the dowel pins off which means you're pretty much relying on a dial indicator to make sure the pressure plates centered on the flywheel so doing it again I would do this differently okay you can see here I have the wiper motor removed and I'm going to drill a hole to put the hydraulic master cylinder and I'm switching from mechanical linkages to hydraulic there's a dimple there and there you can't really see them but there's dimples on the cab from factory so I'm going to drill those for the hydraulic stuff some random old tail pipes to make it down play here's the two downpipes done one painted one not I just use whatever junk spray-paint I have laying around that I'm not gonna use anymore because you're not gonna see it and most of its just gonna burn off anyway but a little bit helps so that's why it's the weird blue the other one will be to just gotta paint okay so I have two coils on the exhaust fully on I just laid the harness in here to start connecting it all so I can put the starter and I did not cut this - down I'm just leaving it stock for now I'll probably end up just leaving it stuck because I just want this thing to run and drive I'm not worried about really making it super clean under the hood I gonna do the first start here I have the makeshift fuel system on there because I'm waiting for my fuel pump to come in I'm using an inline pump and I just have an in-tank pump laying in the milk jug there so sounds pretty awesome okay this is the first time to see if it moves nothing tucked up power steering or belt or water pump but uh we're just gonna see if it moves and take it out and drive it around the yard click and make sure the transshipped skiers and all that and then we'll finish up onto the hood
