How to GLAM up an OLD and BORING Dresser

hello everyone my name is katja and i am a furniture artist i create weekly tutorials on how to paint furniture if you are into painted furniture you are in the right place [Music] this week we got this old boring dresser from the 80s [Music] i did clean the piece and remove the old hardware to start since i'm going to add different hardware i have to cover the holes with wood filler once that is dry you can set it smooth [Music] now it's time to paint and i chose beverly mineral i love waverly because it's so cheap and found at walmart [Music] this is a nice neutral color and it's going to be our base [Music] we are going to do a little blending so this is our base coat [Music] once it's dry we can start to blend so i added my second color elephant it's dark gray blending into a light gray this is a very safe blend and i definitely do suggest you pick safe colors if you're a beginner add blending [Music] you start off by adding your second coat of your base then you immediately add your second color while the paint is still wet i'm using a separate brush for each [Music] also this is just for added dimension i'm not going for a perfect blend i like to clean the brush off to do the blend [Music] and a few sprays of water will really help you get the paint to blend much easier just awesome [Music] also you can always add more wherever you feel necessary [Music] it's going to be a very subtle blend nothing crazy just nice and sophisticated again this is going to end up being our background to the raised stencil so having a dimension is so important [Music] so [Music] i then realized that the top was in such a bad shape and we needed to switch directions sometimes you just have to switch in the middle of the project [Music] it was spilling it had some oil stains it was just in bud shape it was time to bring the sander [Music] i got this surf prep sander now and i'm loving it i can finally send inside now which is great like it's amazing saves so much time the next day i came back and got the drawers ready for a metallic glass bead gel raised stencil that's actually a lot of words to describe one thing metallic glass bead gel raised stencil like i didn't know i can say this many words in one to describe one thing for this we need an oversized stencil okay we no need oversized stencil but i prefer oversized stencil for this also you want a thick stencil for this the thicker the better i'm using this oversized stencil from redesign with prima we will be mixing modern masters glass bead gel with dixie bell moonshine metallics it's pretty easy to use i don't even measure it i'm just adding a bit of paint in it but i don't want it too watery [Music] now you can take a stick or a spatula and spread all the glass bead gel into your stencil [Music] and yes i still celebrate every time like a child it's just a happy moment when you see it once you're done you can clean any edges or corners immediately with a cloth or even your finger [Music] i repeated this process to all my drawers doing two at a time also i clean the stencil in between every use it's best to just do this outside so you don't damage your plumbing and now we can go back to the top because we have to figure out this stuff that is a mess since we want to hide all these imperfections and problems we are going to do a heavy wash and i prefer doing a paint wash on raw wood much more than stain than oil stain i'm using hurricane gray for this normally i dip my brush in paint and water but since it was at the end of the bottle i just poured water directly into it all you're really trying to do is get the paint pretty watery like very watery [Music] hurricane gray is my favorite gray color to use on a raw wood it has something in it like something special once you get the watery paint down you immediately wipe it off with a towel [Music] it's like a wood staining only done with watery paint instead of oil stain [Music] as you can see here we can still see lots of the problems with the top so we're going to do this again [Music] i did a total of three paint washes to cover all the problems this top was giving me [Music] and now we're done with the core techniques and it's time for protection and details because it's all about the details so i'm using a clear coat for the top to give me extra protection i'm using clear wax for the rest of the piece to protect the paint i'm replacing the hardware with this beautiful knobs i picked up from tj maxx they were only 10 bucks they're so large and so beautiful [Music] and for extra glam we will be using some silver gemstone mousse [Music] so i started with clear wax [Music] i'm using it on the dresser because that's all we really need to protect i also drilled my new holes as i went waxing each door and to glam it up i added gemstone mousse to all the drawers borders i did use a detail brush to get those lines nice and straight [Music] then i added my new hardware and moved on to the next door [Music] i did the same thing to each one and it was looking amazing [Music] all i had left to do was protect the top with a flat clear coat i like using a more durable finish for my tops because they will usually get all the heavy use i added three coats of clear coat for more durability [Music] i did add gemstone mousse to the top border as well and that was [Music] it [Music] it was done [Music] to for all my silver lovers here you go you can enjoy your silver piece i love you and didn't forget about you even though i really love gold [Music] i really love how this dresser came out i love taking these boring flat pieces and turning them into a piece of art because if you look at this piece it is a piece of art a glamorous piece of art i love dimension glassbeat gel i pretty much love
