howdy is tubal-cain once again and in this video i'm here in my basement shop along with the great randy richards then with polymer Moynihan who is router camera range at the moment holding the light but the subject of this video is to discuss and demonstrate engine turning and here on polymers a sander if I can get a full shot of that you've seen this sander before on the side he has engine turned this and engine turning is simply a decorative machining or abrasive process that was used very often years ago on firearms and many other dashboards of cars I can't think of all the different examples perhaps some fire engines the fire engine balances ambulances and embellish this way I sort of think of of it as organized chaos because each circle is in fact very different but their uniform enough that they make a nice jeweled pattern and it is strictly for decoration probably not something used so often before it's only surface deep it is often just a lithographed or imitated on dashboards of cars and other modern products where they don't actually do it but it's a photographically reproduce so let's step over to the drill press and see how it's done ok this is the legendary of Palmer Monaghan the tall Texan and and he's an expert at engine turning and he's us well he's actually on a stool sitting before the Walker turn our drill press you've seen this in a lot of videos and now I'm gonna zoom in and see the setup that he's going to use here for engine turning there's a lot of ways to make this abrasive action happen it's basically always a circular motion that happens and you need to be able to do it all across your work very uniformly in other words you don't want to have a grinder give dole in the middle of your pattern and then you would have to put a new grinder out and the pattern would change out here in the middle that wouldn't be a good thing so I there's been a lot of different people figure out a lot of different ways crate X is one of them that's a rubberized material that has abrasive in it and now I've come up with several other ways I turned this on the lathe and I had a little rubber pad glued on down here it would spin off and then glue itself and so that didn't work I've seen guys use wire brushes and make a pattern either even smaller brushes than this and they would pull them down with a tie wrap to make them where centrifugal force didn't make them go out but they put patterns on that way there's some of these nylon of these walking abrasive pads that can go on and spin look what happens when that gets dull out in the middle of your work once again you have to change out to a new fresh pet so here's been my solution for all kinds of material I take oil and I'll explain of oil Apollo know this is our famous three in one oil Oh do they still manufacture that they do and you find it at garage sales for 25 cents a can now I'm gonna take this and just apply the oil all over now the reason I'm doing this remember is so that I can put the same kind of abrasion all over this work I've taken black a bracing it's send blasting color and I put it in a coffee can make some things that look very much like a salt shaker and then I'm sprinkling it all over the work now when I've got that evenly applied I know that this wooden thing is going to come down on roughly the same number of grains per circle a fresh abrasive all the way through and I'm hoping that this wooden dowel is it going to let go so let's see how it goes notice I'm going to start on an inch marker yeah and I'm gonna put my first mark down what's your rpm about 600 rpm thank you and I'm gonna move every inch [Music] so this doesn't have to be a long thing we don't need milling machine accuracy we simply need to get done with it [Music] this might be where you speed it up [Music] now we want to do the second row so I'm gonna move back about a half an inch here since I was moving down on it half an inch and I'm going to do the quarter inch marks here so that means every quarter inch and three-quarter inch mark [Music] this is not rocket science its engine Purnell and you know some people call it dueling that's another term they use for it but [Music] it's a very simple process I think they're seeing and you could be more precise than I'm being right now but you could also be less precise the time being right now and still turn out a fairly decent looking process [Music] this is an aluminum we're doing and the next thing that I'll do here will be in tool steel we can grind this same pattern into something that's very very hard alright isn't that pretty polymers completed about 1/2 of this piece of aluminum and you see how uniform that is and how the lake catches it and it's very pretty and before he starts the next portion of the demonstration I just wanted to point out some of the other mediums that you can use for this process and there's some carborundum powder silicon carbide and that happens to be 120 grit 5 pounds of it you could do a heck of a lot of engine turning with that couldn't you Palmer mm-hmm what do you got there valve compound I believe clover valve compound for flapping valves and you charge the the thing that's turning with this kind of greasy stuff it's almost like toothpaste in fact I think you could use toothpaste actually you could also use something like the bulk camp of valve grinding compound and here's another brand or a similar brand of clover compound and I see they're two different greatest regrets avail in that but that all of this presents a way to not dole out and basically stay at the same abrasion level throughout the project so that it looks more or less well it's organized chaos that's what I really want but a uniform organized kale yeah would you not agree I agree all right now I want to change the diameter of the circular pattern we're gonna go to about a half-inch piece of wooden dowel this is an open grain wood oak that will accept the charge that's coming along and I'm going to use the same process as I did before using a piece of tool steel now this is very hard material and it's gonna be very similar we're gonna set up right here and plant these yard sticks in I can say remember it doesn't have to be perfect it just has to be done so so now we're going to take the heart steal put a little oil out on it spread the oil out and remember we're doing this oiling so that abrasive will stay put so that when I distribute that relatively even coat of abrasive why it will here we go again now Emily is in a half - this time so I'm going to only move with a quarter inch trying to do this as fast as I possibly can killing me from precision and some business to do since we're on a half inch football here we're moving forward at a first off whatever you do whatever dimensions you hit simply be consistent throughout your project I'm gonna call that good enough for that link now I'm gonna back off move my stick back back to the flow now I'm gonna go on the a pinch marks because I'm finishing this one up remember this time we're doing it on a much harder material than the original thing that I showed you with aluminum which is not nearly as [Music] scarred the aluminum was this steel is much tougher to the abrasive gives a nice pattern so here we are on this little sample coming up machine is off and I'll try to show you what we've done here we've we should have put some sparkle in this piece and you can do it to most anything that your extra primitive if you do a piece of metal work while you can do some engine turning on it and it'll be quite nice it's pretty okay they the video is over and we got Randy here kind of cuttin up what do you think we ought to do Randy with that piece of shiny I wonder a small piece here three-eighths in circles with half overlaps holy Mack will be here to let the rest of the night so be every 3/16 of an inch parallels to do all right this is a tubal-cain and Palmer and
