this video is sponsored by skillshare  in my last video i brought you along   for the ride with me as i attempted to  cover a dresser with actual linen fabric   but in this video i'm going to be showing you  how to achieve a similar linen or grass cloth   look on your furniture in a much easier  way in my opinion anyways just using paint   welcome or welcome back if this is  your first time here on the channel   my name is katie of salvaged by k scott  and i am a full-time furniture flipper   furniture refinisher furniture painter furniture  artist whatever title you feel like giving me my   full-time job is finding pieces of furniture  that are worn out and outdated and giving them   a whole new lease on life this is the dresser  that i'm going to be making over today i picked   it up at my local thrift store on a 50  off furniture day so it only cost me 10   i really love all the clean flat surfaces and the  fact that it's in really good condition it's only   got a few surface blemishes and the drawer bottoms  need to be fixed but that's easy stuff to deal   with it is kind of an awkward height though it is  a short little one so i do want to add some legs   to lift it up off the floor and that's really  going to change the whole overall vibe of it i flipped it down onto its back so that i  could take a look at the bottom construction   of the dresser and figure out how i can go about  adding some feet the base is completely open with   not much to drill or screw into so i'm going  to need to make a new bottom of my own here i grabbed a two foot by four foot  piece of three-quarter inch plywood   and measured out the bottom of the dresser then  i used my circular saw to cut it down to size the body of the dresser is actually made out of  solid maple which is honestly a little surprising   to me but that means that i can really easily and  securely attach this new board base i just drilled   some pilot holes around the edge added a little  bead of wood glue and then i screwed it all down i've had these seven inch angled  wood legs in my furniture parts   stash for a while but they're originally from  amazon i'll see if i can find a link for them   and leave it down in the description box  i usually try to buy legs that already   have their mounting hardware installed and  ready to go but i did need to attach the   mounting plates to these before i could  go ahead and attach them to the dresser once i had all of my legs assembled i measured  out where i wanted them to sit and screwed them   into place and by measured i mean i eyeballed  it don't hate me that's just how i operate now i can flip this dresser back up and take a  look i am loving the way that this looks already   my next step is going to be cleaning  and fixing anything that needs repairs   i used some simple green to wash down the  whole dresser inside and out to get rid of any   dirt and grease and a few cobwebs  and dust bunnies in here too to fill in the dents on the top of the dresser  and also to smooth out that rough plywood edge   on the bottom i mixed up some heavy duty wood  filler and applied that with a putty knife once that was dry i sanded the entire  piece with some 180 grit sandpaper on the curved edges i just used a foam sanding pad   so that i didn't flatten them  out with my orbital sander next up it is time to prime this is the primer  that i use on almost every project that i paint   zinzer's bin shellac based primer will give me a  little extra adhesion insurance block any stains   i'm not really worried about wood tan and  staining on this one but there was a lot of   permanent marker on it and that can stain your  new paint even if you think you've washed or   sanded it all off and it's also going to seal up  that wood filler around the bottom of the dresser   so that my paint sits evenly across the surface  instead of soaking into those more porous spots i also need to take a few minutes to reattach  these drawer bottoms i pulled the old staples out   with some needle nose pliers and then added just a  tiny bit of wood glue and re-stapled them in place   with my pneumatic staple gun before i get into  this really cool paint technique i want to thank   skillshare for continuing to support this  channel and tell you a little bit more about   them skillshare is an online learning community  with i'm using some chalk finish   furniture paint from house and canvas in the  colors angora and river rock i also need some   clear glazing medium and this one that i'm using  today i got from my local michaels craft store   my base coat is going to be in this angora which  is a beautiful soft off-white i brushed on two   coats and i wasn't being too careful about it  i did keep all of my brush strokes going in   the same direction but i'm trying to create a  textured fabric look here so having some brush   marks and texture is really going to help me do  that a super smooth paint job is not what you   want here just make sure that it's not messy and  you don't have any drips anywhere once that base   coat was dry i mixed up some of this medium gray  river rock with my glaze medium there's no exact   measurement or recipe here but i think i ended up  with about three parts paint to two parts glaze   this glaze is going to make my paint slightly  more translucent but more importantly   it's going to help it stay open or wet longer so  that i can manipulate it before it starts to dry then i grabbed a stiff bristled brush this  is just a broom head from the dollar store   and this technique is so easy you do not need  any fancy tools to do this all you do is just   drag that brush through the wet glaze one pass  over the full surface end to end in a horizontal   pattern and then one pass vertically top to bottom  again over the full surface this motion will give   you that cross-hatched or woven look of fabric i  made sure that i had a shop towel and a piece of   cardboard right by my side so that i could wipe  off the excess paint and glaze off of my brush   after a few passes but this is extremely forgiving  it is easy like i said i just kept going over my   glaze horizontally and then vertically  until i had created a look that i liked once i was happy with the way that the top was  looking i moved on to the side repeating the   exact same process and the nice thing about this  is that if you make a mistake or smudge your work   somehow you can just keep swiping over it until  it's blended back in i tried to keep my strokes   as a level as possible to keep the design  straight but other than that it's so easy so since the mdf drawer bottoms were a little  lackluster i decided to paint them and clean   them up just a little bit with that same  river rock paint just to make them look a   little more finished and part of the overall  design and then i took my dresser back inside   once i got a look at the dresser all put back  together with my design fully dry i did notice   that there were a few harsh lines that i didn't  love so i just sanded over those with a super fine   sanding pad just to soften them up a little  then i was ready to seal up my dresser   i decided on house and canvases satin top coat  for this piece it's really important to stir   any liquid top coat like this very well before  each use you don't want to shake it or whisk it   because that can add bubbles in which will show up  in your finish but a thorough mix to reincorporate   all of the ingredients is going to help you  get a smooth consistent sheen on your piece   to apply my top coat i brushed it on with the  same two inch brush that i used for my paint   i just made sure that i cleaned it very well  i waited two hours between coats and ended   up applying two coats to the body of the dresser  and a third extra coat on the top of the dresser this little dresser has been through quite the  transformation but before i show you what the   finished product looks like please make sure that  you are subscribed to my channel before you go   so that you never miss out on any new furniture  flipping inspiration from me
