thank you to birch living for sponsoring this  video hello friends katie here from salvaged by   kay scott on a very dark and dreary early monday  morning i am currently standing in the bedroom of   the basement apartment in the house that we just  moved into our new home here on the east coast of   canada came with two basement apartments that  are a little outdated one side of the basement   has been reverted back into living space and  is kind of the gaming zone for my two boys but   the other side of the basement this side of the  basement we're actually working on renovating and   making over so that our friends and family who  we left back in ontario have a cool place to   stay when they want to come out and visit us a  few weeks ago i made over the bathroom in this   apartment and now we're taking on the task of  this bedroom so let me give you a little tour   there isn't too much to this tiny bedroom off  the kitchen down here two of the four walls have   this nice little ledge where our foundation is  there's a decent sized window that lets in lots   of natural light and it looks like i need to  get out into that garden and pull some weeds   there is also a whole wall of closets in here this  one houses our furnace and the other is a pretty   good size for just regular closet storage the  carpet on the floor is pretty nasty so it's coming   up and we're going to be replacing all of the  flooring in this apartment with a laminate plank   flooring that we picked up on clearance at one of  our local hardware stores here in new brunswick this dimpled underlayment membrane   is going to go down first directly over  the concrete floors and all that does is   create a little bit of a space for air to flow  between the cement and the new laminate floors then we put down this padded moisture barrier  to keep any moisture on the concrete side of   the floor and it also provides some extra  cushioning doug has installed a ton of these   floors in our homes over the years and he's  pretty proficient at it as long as i don't try   to help so i spent my time while he was laying  floors pulling the old nails out of the trim   and sanding it down a little bit so that we could  just reinstall this once the floors were finished after just a few hours doug had all the floors  finished in here so he nailed the trim back up   with some new quarter round and i followed right  behind him with a little bit of quick drying   spackle to fill in all the holes to finish getting  this space ready for paint i used my handy little   electric screwdriver to take down this boob light  all of the old blind hardware and the wall plates do i hear a lot of people talking about how  complicated it is to find the right white   for your space but my favorite is always just  a plain white base paint from bear no tinting   just their clean crisp ultra white after  two coats of fresh paint we borrowed this   vintage light fixture from another spot  in the house and now i can set up the bed   we brought this platform from our old house  but i think it was originally purchased from   amazon like most people sleep is really important  to me and i want to be able to create the most   comfortable and restful experience here for  my guests as i can when we moved out here to   the east coast we actually purchased a brand  new birch living mattress for upstairs in our   primary bedroom and i love it so much that  we're going to be putting one down here in   the guest suite as well so that friends  and family can have the same incredible   sleep experience birch is a premium bed in a box  company that makes mattresses and sleep products   that are stylish comfortable and environmentally  conscious their non-toxic mattresses are made   in america and crafted with organic and natural  materials that have all been sustainably sourced   they are specially created with breathability  cooling and support in mind and with this year's   crazy hot summer the breathability of the natural  materials keeping everyone cool and comfortable   while they sleep is a huge bonus unlike synthetic  mattresses the wool in these makes them both   hypoallergenic and mildew resistant and i can  sleep easy knowing that our mattresses have the   green guard gold status which means they've been  tested and are free from vocs and formaldehyde   and certified to be safe for sensitive individuals  like the kids and seniors they are so easy to buy   online and ship directly to your front door and  if it makes you nervous buying a mattress that   you haven't tried birch gives you a hundred night  sleep trial to make sure that you love it if you   don't they'll pick it up for you and you'll  get a full refund so if you are looking for a   new bed make sure that you check out birch you  can click on the link below in the description   box or you can go to birchliving.com katie scott  to get 400 off of your mattress and you'll also   get two of their eco rest pillows which are made  from recycled plastic bottles for free i've been   looking at my local thrift stores and on facebook  marketplace for a headboard to upcycle for this   room since we moved but i haven't been able to  find the right style in the right size at a decent   price point so i decided to just make my own we  grabbed a four by eight sheet of three quarter   inch mdf and cut it down to 62 inches wide which  is the size that i need for the queen mattress   then i grabbed some masking paper and traced  out the design that i had stuck in my head   i cut out my half template and taped it  to the top of the mdf and then traced it   out with a sharpie then i just flipped it over  and traced the mirror image on the other side   since dad was around and willing and i am always  looking for a good excuse to not use a power saw   i got him to cut along the trace line with our  jigsaw and then he got out his big rotor and ran   around the entire perimeter of the headboard and  that gave it a really beautiful finished rounded   off edge this is something that i could have done  with my smaller handheld router but it's totally   an optional step and if you didn't have a router  you could leave this edge as it is and just kind   of smooth it over with a little bit of sandpaper  and it would still give you a really impressive   look i used my surf prep detail sander with a  foam interface pad and some 220 grit sandpaper   just to give a final smooth out to this  edge and then i was ready for primer   since mdf is super porous it will suck up a ton  of paint so it really does need to be sealed   i used my favorite bin shellac based  primer for this because i had some   on hand but since i recorded this video the  price of this primer has gone from kind of   on the expensive side to completely insanely  unaffordable so i'm going to be using a lot   more water-based primers on my flips going forward  and save this stuff for the really special cases while my second coat of primer dried i  popped by my local fusion mineral paint   retailer the painted pineapple in and grabbed  a jar of the color champness i want to create   kind of a light denim chambray look on here and  this is going to be the perfect color for that   effect i did also opt to add some of fusion's  extender into my paint and all this is going to   do is make the paint take a little bit longer to  dry so that i'll have some more time to create the   faux linen or denim finish that i want and since  this is supposed to be a really organic and   loose textured look i'm using a ruler again to  apply my paint to the primed headboard it doesn't   need to be neat or tidy at all and i'm actually  using my white primer here as my base color so   it's going to peek through the blue and create  a woven fabric effect i decided to do about a   one foot panel across the top and once i had the  paint on there i grabbed a stiff brush from the   dollar store and started to build my pattern this  linen or denim look is a really easy finish to do   you just use the bristles to drag some paint off  and reveal that contrasting color underneath i did   one pass going horizontally then i wiped off my  brush on some paper towel and went back and did   the same thing in a vertical motion to create  a crosshatch design this is a technique that i   learned from courtney at steel birch studios and  i'll leave a link to her tutorial for it here   when i was happy with that top section and had  i feel for how long my paint was taking to dry   i went ahead and added the rest of the paint to  the bottom and then just kept going back and forth   with my brush until i liked the way it was looking  like i said perfection is not super important here   it's a good technique to just relax and  play with your paint especially since it's   a headboard and most of it is going to be  hidden behind the mattress and the pillows fusion mineral paint does have a built-in  resin top coat and since this is going to   be in a guest room i didn't think i needed to  add anything additional so once it was dry we   brought it inside and just screwed  it right to the wall behind the bed   i measured out to make sure that it was centered  under the window and that there was enough room on   each side for the upcycled nightstands that i did  a few months ago and bam that was easy only about   eighty dollars in materials for this i have my  mdf board i have some primer and some paint once   the bed was in i tucked my night tables in on the  side and then it was time for some smaller stuff   i love chinoiserie patterns on everything and  i have been daydreaming about some ginger jar   lamps like these that i found online forever but  i'm not ever going to be spending this much money   on a table lamp so again i decided to make my  own homesense has had a ton of cool ginger jars   on their shelves this summer so i picked up this  matching set for 19.99 a piece and also ordered   two lamp kits from amazon for 22.99 each i did  need to find a 10 millimeter diamond hole saw bit   so that i could drill a few holes in the vases  and attach my lamp kits and we were able to   find a 10 piece set of them at princess auto  which is kind of like harbor freight in the us   for 19.99 so by the time i had all of the  pieces that i needed i was in for about 130   total for both of these lamps which isn't cheap  but it is definitely cheaper than anything that   i could find online to turn these jars into  lamps we teamed up again to first drill a hole   in the top piece of each jar and then another  hole for the cords to go into in the bottom   doug slowly drilled into the ceramic while  i held the jar nice and firmly in place and   just squirted a little bit of water through  an old syringe to keep it from overheating   once we had our holes drilled i fed the cord  through the bottom of the lamp and up through   the nut and the threaded pipe in the top piece  and then secured it in place with another nut next i had to connect the wires to the socket this  was a little bit fiddly and i got frustrated so   doug grabbed it from me and wrapped  the white wire around the white   screw and tightened it down and then the  black wire went around the other screw   once the wires were connected we could  pop the rest of the socket together   and after adding some plain white shades  i've got a matching set of ginger jar lamps a few more small items to upcycle for this space  are this mirror that i thrifted a few years ago   and actually used to hang in the guest suite  of our old house i painted it with two coats   of country chic paint in this beautiful blue  called starstruck and hung it up on the wall   and then i printed off these two ginger jar art  pieces that i purchased from etsy and hung those   in some thrifted frames that i had painted  in that same champness color from fusion once i had all the stuff hung  on the walls i made up the bed   with some new fresh white linens and this  gorgeous chambray denim quilt and then i   added some more found and thrifted  items to bring this space together i will definitely continue looking for  some more art pieces and fun things to   fill in some of the blank  spaces on the walls in here   but living in and decorating a space that is  mostly filled with found and thrifted items   means you have to be patient i hope you enjoyed  coming along on this guest room makeover with   me huge shout out to my husband mr salvage for  all of the hard work that he put into this space   as well and thank you to birch living for  sponsoring this video please make sure that you   are subscribed to the channel leave me a thumbs  up and a comment down below to let me know what   you think i think i might just curl up in this  brand new bed and take a little bit of a nap   before i head back out into the garage to start on  my next project but i will catch you all next time you
