welcome in my DIY enthusiasts have you ever wished for a magic wand to transform your worn out wood furniture without all that hassle of stripping it back well you're in for a treat today I'm going to show you how to do it we're diving into the art of refinishing wood furniture without that tedious process of stripping off all the old paint so whether you're a seasoned DIY or a firsttime Furniture flipper this technique will really help you approach the way you refinish wood furnit fing join me today as I unveil a gamechanging method that preserves the character of the wood while giving your furniture a brand new lease on life let me show you how it's done today I'll be working on a Dixie dresser that I picked up from a friend this dresser has had years of use and plenty of wear and tear but there's a whole lot of life left in it so you know we're going to give this a really great facelift today so they can keep it in the family for a whole lot longer this dresser has been previously painted and you can see it needs a little bit of help with the finish so I am going to teach you guys today how you deal with previously painted furniture and give it a whole new look without having to restore it or strip off all of that old [Music] paint first things first I'm going to take off all of these old knobs I have got a totally different direction that I'm taking this dresser so we won't be reusing [Music] [Music] these [Music] [Music] I took this dresser all apart so I could give it a really good deep clean I'm starting off with some simple which is a great way to cut through all the dirt and the grime I'm going to do the whole body of the dresser and then start working on the [Music] drawers [Music] my client for this piece has requested a new Fresh coat of paint to be put on this but before I do that I've got to get rid of some of this previous paint job that was done before there's a lot of drips and some brush strokes and we really need to clean that off just to make it look a little more professional so another trick when you're working with Furniture that's already been painted and you don't feel like stripping off all the old paint I would really only strip off all of this old paint if the if the project needed to be just completely restored or refinished then I would get into stripping off this paint but that's not what the client wants today they just wanted a whole new color to match their new bedroom so we're just going to make sure I'm starting with the smoothest surface possible and that means I don't have to take off all of this paint I'm using my festal rotary sander to start smoothing out this dresser the goal of this project is to make sure that all the paint drips and the uneven finish marks are nice and smooth by the time I get done sanding if there's any lumps and bumps that I've gotten Left Behind they're going to show up as soon as I hit this with a Fresh coat of paint now I'm using a professional grade sander and I've got it linked below if you're interested but you can most definitely use a regular orbital sander and I'm using an 80 grit sanding [Music] pad all these little bits and bumps that I'm highlighting on the drawers if I was to just paint straight over these every little bit of it would show and it would not look professional or finish nice at all so I'm taking a little extra time with my rotary sander just to make sure that everything again is nice and smooth I don't need to take this down to be wood I just need to make sure that I have a nice flat finish to start with before we jump back into what I'm doing next in the garage let me tell you about today's sponsor if you are someone like me who spends a lot of time at a desk you're not going to want to miss today's sponsor today's my orbital sander to help get them out I did a little bit of digging on these Dixie dressers and the ones that are designed like this turns out they were made in the late '70s early 80s so we're looking at about 40 Years of wear and tear I'm really excited to give this one a fresh [Music] baselift I flipped the dresser on its back to make sure that the base was still in good shape I've got some of these paint drips to deal with and I've got a big crack on one of the legs that I'm definitely going to need to patch I'm taking some wood glue and an old paintbrush and I'm just going to shove all the glue that I can into these cracks just to make sure that this foot is still secure I prefer to use a craft glue syringe for this type of thing but I don't have one on hand so I'm going to use my little paintbrush here and just shove all the glue in that I can next I'll clamp it so it's straight and strong wipe off the extra glue that overflows out of the cracks there and then just let it dry for a few hours now that I've done sanding I've got got a lot of different surfaces that are showing up on this dresser and so since it's going to a good friend of mine and I really want to make sure this dresser lasts her daughter for years to come I'm just going to make sure we don't have any bleed through issues so what I'm going to use today is some white pigmented chellac it's in a spray can bottle so it's really easy to apply I picked these up from Sherwin Williams although there are other places to get this product and I will link everything down below I'm going to apply two coats of this pigment tinted primer on here with about an hour in between for dry time this is a pretty strong product you're going to want to make sure that you're wearing your PPE and have plenty of [Music] ventilation now that I've got my regular primer on I am going to use something different on the top slick I want to make sure whatever treatment I'm doing to the top is going to stick for a long time so the first first thing I'm going to use is country sheeks clear bonding primer I'm going to put a really light coat of this on and then it has to dry for about 12 hours but that's perfect it'll take me that long to get the dresser painted and I'm doing something totally different on the top so it'll give my paint time to dry just a little extra step to make sure it really adheres to that laminate top my client chose this really fun color by ly Moon paint called Autumn Harvest this is going to be the perfect color to match her room see what her bedroom looks like with this color it's going to be pretty awesome so I've got this loaded into my gravity fed hlp sprayer I added just a dollop of water to help thin this out just a little bit um the more you spray Furniture the more you get familiar with what consistency you like best in your sprayer and with which paints so I know this just needs a little bit of water to help it go through completely so that's all I've added I use a 20-gallon compressor which you're going to see here in this video I show my settings as well so you can see what it's set to but don't worry if you do not have a compressor or you are not at the level where you feel like you want to buy a compressor and invest that kind of money into this just yet I've also linked one of my favorite spray guns that you can use that just plugs in and it works just as well so be sure to check all those links below I've got the paint linked for you everything that I'm using on today's project you're going to find Below in that description my sprayer is loaded up and I'm going to test my settings for first on a piece of cardboard and then we're ready to get this going this color is bright and bold and I am loving it on this dresser straight out of the gate I'm usually somebody who goes for the safe bet and does a lot of neutrals but I love when I get a custom order that wants to be a little more wild sound off in the comment section below if you tend to stick with the neutral Vibe or do you like painting these bright bold colors like [Music] this [Music] when the drawers are flush with the dresser you usually don't have to paint them out of the dresser but these had a little bit of an overhang so I put them on my Mage shift Lazy Susan taped up the sides and used my little pizza box trick just to make sure all the edges were [Music] perfect [Music] I don't just want to paint this whole dresser I want it to be a little different than that so on the top I want to create a natural wood look but I don't have real wood I have this laminate on the top so I'm going to have to fake it till I make it I'm going to be using a product today called RTI this is a wood and primer it is natural coloring like it's a light color as you can see in the jar but it has fibers in it like wood fibers so when I create some texture to this like you're going to see in a minute it's going to bring out more of like a wood top so I can kind of fake that this is laminate underneath there and hopefully at the end you won't be able to [Music] tell this product is pretty thick and it does go on rather easily with a brush so I like just to get it on and get it smoothed out and then finish it off with some long even stroke so you don't see uneven brushed [Music] patterns now that the wood primer on the top is dry I'm going to apply the next step and that is this routin it stain I'm using the color weathered wood and this is when you get to the point where you just have to trust the process we're not quite done yet this is just going to help give it some depth and bring out those wood textures that I'm about to make on the [Music] top I'm using a graining tool to get the design on the top that I want I have a few of these graining tools so if I didn't like the way that this one looked I could easily just wipe back that stain and try again this is a water-based stain so it has plenty of open time you definitely get to mess around with this and not worry about ruining your project which is what I love about it it takes a little bit to get used to but it is really easy once you get the hang of it so definitely give it a try I wipe back my roller after each swipe and then we're ready to go again [Music] [Music] oh now that I've got that wood grain exactly how I want it to look I let it dry overnight and I'm applying a lighter reti stain to the top of this to help tone it down just a bit and give it more of a realistic look you can just apply the top coat after this last step that I showed you but I decided to take it just a little step further and I really like the outcome of this it was exactly what I was going for I let my dresser dry for about half of the day and I'm going to top coat it with Lily Moon Stellar Shield this is a very durable top coat and it'll ensure that all my efforts will be protected for years to come I really love using this top coat because it has the perfect balance between a matte and a satin finish you can either spray this on or you can use a poly sponge to apply [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] [Music] and if you've stuck around this long hopefully you like what you've seen and I hope you consider hitting that subscribe button I recently just passed 60,000 subscribers on YouTube and I would love to add you guys to the bunch thank you so much for being Amazon and they are the perfect style for my client's boho themed bedroom and I hope she loves them as much as I do [Music] let's give one final look to this Dixie dresser it's had its fair share of use over the years and hopefully now with its new face lip it'll be loved for many more years to come [Music] I literally cannot believe that this is the same dresser I started with I love the bright bold color and the new faux wood top the hardware just pulls this all together if you have a previously painted project that you're afraid to tackle I hope that today's video gave you a little bit of
