hey folks on beater milhorn if your subscriber welcome back and if you're new consider hitting that subscribe button down in the corner and smashing the bill that will you'll be notified when we have new content up hey listen today we're gonna go out trolling draggy baits for catfish and i'm gonna go through some of the steps some of the details that I do when I go out trying to catch these fish I'm out they'll make gorgeous late fall morning it's a late December we're not the winter yet still got a few weeks apologize for the highway noise I'm writing here to Buster Boyd bridge on Lake Wylie just south of it that's 1b fishing today so what we call sob south of Buster boy the locals that's how we refer to the lake here are you fishing sob our knob north of Buster Boyd but I'm gonna be drifting today and I'm gonna go over some of the stuff some of the secrets if you will for catching catfish drifting I get a lot of private messages about this and I'm going to try to consolidate all the information I put in a bunch of videos into this one video and basically what drifting is dragon trolling whatever you want to call us when you use a boat a moving boat to cover water to catch catfish and the term drifting is kind of a wide broad term you can be dressing with the wind you can be drifting with the current what we're gonna be doing today is drifting probably more like trolling since we have no wind I'll be using a trolling motor to move the boat but I'll give our go over some of that later I'm gonna use the we're gonna move is what's going to happen we're not going to be anchored up today we're gonna cover water we're gonna go with the spread six rods and dragging them on the bottom utilizing what it's called a Santy rig you may or may not heard of it it's almost a modified Carolina rig sorta but not really on one end of it you got the median that's where the hooks at and I use a snailed circle hook octopus style I like that I like it being in line with it some people getting all this trigger action stuff I don't go that route I want a straight shank I want my leader in line with shank I think it gives the best hook presentation for getting that to hook into the corner mouth right above that you've got some kind of a float what this does is this floats up off the bottom we got a sink on the other end I'll show you in a second this floats the bait up it can be a plain court and put a line rattle on it you can use some kind of lure that has a rattle in it if you think that helps you this basically floats debate up off the bottom it's going to float up this here is gonna be pinned to the bottom this is a sinker I basically got a main line coming in to my leader line snap swivel and I got a weight here it's a 2 ounce pencil weight from Dale's tackle they sell these things you can also use some different drifting weights I'm going to show you some of those today I'm gonna be trying them out but this here can vary you can use just regular Bank sinkers you use pencil wage and you strip the sinkers a lot of different variables there depending on where you're fishing out what you like that's the main thing and that's basically as simple as the system is we're going to bounce them down through here and big thing is boat speed we're going to talk about that more later in the video but boat speed it's probably more critical than about anything you can do when you're trolling or drifting for catfish and my deal is I got some white perch here in the tank reach and grab one these suckers are live I prefer to scale them it just helps eliminate getting some of the scales on the hook scales off button and what I'm going to do I'm just gonna fillet this sucker one side off level boom there's a baked there's a bake there's a baton there's a bake get all those cut up get the boat going straight get them in the water start dragging hey guys give you a little info on what I'm doing here I kind of made this run across this flat adjacent to the river channel came through a little small little ditch there I'm gonna try to do is get right here on this channel edge and kind of just drag down the edge of it and see what's in there see what's happening starting to as you can see pick up a few more arches right here around this edge this area here was kind of bare not a lot of fish in there water temperatures not that bad it's like 51 degrees it's clear and so that's the plan I'm gonna run down this ledge here for a little bit this little drop here just if there's anything on here with the planer boards I should be able to cover it from up here all the way down to the bottom and we'll see what's there then I'll make a turn come down through here the deeper part and see what's in there and maybe come back up to this other side what's interesting is that some Lakes depending on well it's set up you can see this is kind of on the outside swing here and a lot of times he's outside swings will have more mineral deposits and sometimes you get more muscles out in there most historically before this was the light it's just a river when it would flood and overflow stuff would get washed to the outside so sometimes they're gonna be more minerals more life on the outside somehow usually it's deeper on the outside however for whatever reason geology and all the stuff that was here before the lake was here sometimes it's better on this side sometimes this side may not have fish sometimes this side will this is where trolling comes in handy covering water comes in handy because he gives you the ability to try all these places in a fairly short amount of time I think maybe hooked up yep okay some ancient mariner rods one of their reels - it's basically a combo it's an interesting ride it's one of the only catfish rods I've seen outside the ugly stick it has a gimbal butt on it you got it in the rocket launcher holders or any of the holders in the deck of the boat like I do they've got a little rod in there this thing's got a little slit in and a little cuts that keep these rods pointed in a certain direction finally got bid I made a turn I actually came out to deeper water I noticed a planter board that was getting pop was in the deeper side deeper water so I pulled over here right down the middle of it we'll see if that makes a difference made a difference on one fish anyway mr. blue cat around mr. blue kid yeah hello catfish people yes guys first wonder today a little deeper water this one in one's pencil Waits this has a line rattle on it I think makes a little bit of noise clickers terminal tackle makes these things actually hit one of the smaller baits so just goes to show you I've got a map I got six rods out four of them I got bigger baits and two of them I got small baits that's what you get hit we get a little bit of fish here just for entertainment purposes but probably eliminating the bunch with the with the bigger baits but that's efficient I'm going to check the one of the funder boards it got smashed pretty good we got to see what's not there and one of the other things we're going to use today to sweeten it up a little bit that's a little more advanced level this is level 2 trolling drifting dragging that's planer board I'm gonna be using these these are from B cap products they were nice enough to send me a second one I had one blow out of the boat and I never could find it in some high winds one day they sent me another one they make some pretty cool planer boards even put my logo on it which is even sweeter and I like to eat these are cold I got a metal rudder on them blade whatever you want to call this part of it this is part that's in the water and this round the top I'm gonna do some experimenting with this rounded foam on the top I have a thesis don't know if it's true we're gonna see later on this year that this round that actually handles wind better one thing you'll see about trolling with cleaner boards is wind affects them and depending if you've got a crosswind it'll start to push boards wide on one side into you on another so that's a I'm curious that this actually makes a difference I've got both kinds of blending boards a lot of different brands out there they all they all work and they all work a little differently depending on how they're built and just how they're structured so you may have to play around with a couple of them to find the one that's going to work for your style of fishing we got we got a small planer board just got this drift started looks like I had some white perch down below me but I'm not sure that's where it is haven't gonna need a hit yet I think if this board up here where I can get it free is I'm one of the tiger rods like I said some people pop these planer boards loose I'm not tournament fishing and I don't have to get a fish in I'll do what I just did and wrangle them in that way if you tournament fishing then you have to get them in the boat not want to handle that a little differently but keep that line tight keep that rod bent you can do that and it just makes wrangling and handling the fish of the boat a lot easier than dealing with that planer board slapping around slow rolling this one then trying to navigate it between some lines here I've got a perch rod down right there one thing that's nice about these old tiger rods I hadn't used them in a while I replaced the catfish rod I had on here they're gonna stick catfish right it was just too flimsy when was this one channel cat right there hitting the big bag they go perks play Channel kid seen better days hook left in him two pieces of a hook right there a big crappie fisherman left that did he did not learn his lesson but he gets to go back a lot and I told you I'm gonna bury it around on some secrets today gotta be a Nimrod here just got a drifter he gonna die got a big ol Bank sinker on it I was out doing some anchor and the other day I'm gonna take this sinker off you can use these sinkers these things will work I've been in a pinch I've used some dragon but I've got an actual dragon sinker here this one made by BoneTown catfishing I'll put you links by the way I'm gonna put you links to these and also the planter bulwarks down in the description section below you can always message me too in case I ever forget to do that but this is a drifting sinker it's flexible kind of goes up and over stuff BoneTown catfishing makes these are pretty cool they sent me something to try out and we're gonna put them to work today try these out a lot of different ones out there but I'm gonna see how these working before and they look similar to similar to some of the ones I make and case you're wondering this is one of the rattling - or just a homemade one you can buy these what they call blanks they're white and detain them yourself it's what I did I've got some links of those in the description section under some of my gear and 30 pound Andy line monster line people ask about that this is a bnm rod just lose believe this one they call this one their laser I think it's a 60 class which it's kind of in between a Abu Garcia 6500 and a 7000 come in that class so plenty of line they work great people have asked me about I've been using them for about two years no complaints so I'm gonna drop the trolling motor in we have no wind so I'm gonna drop the trolling motor in get us moving we're gonna make a drag through here and try to locate fish I have not fish down here in several months not fish down here olive fault so this is really like fishing totally new water in the sense that I know what's going on on the bottom but figuring out the fish that's gonna be a whole nother ballgame alright guys I've got a CNN poll going on I just took a picture of this real line and fold and put it on my Instagram just posted it up turn around what's moving something if it goes off it's like it's on Instagram now so let's just cut a fish on it make sure y'all check out my Instagram Peter Mel horns pretty simple I got all my social media stuff on my website peter milhorn fishing comm you got to check it out to get along drift across here caught that one channel and winds down a little bit I'm really going slow now so giving these fish every opportunity to bite trying to get this to clear the drift sock I'm doing a little a little bit of letting him dive a little bit feels like a channel cat to leave a lot of bytes out here there's a lot of bait out there I thought it was perch but I hadn't caught him yet another channel getting them some good old channel cats out here yeah ain't big old they're old channel cats hello channel cat you won't be on the Instagram my snap a picture this one put it on the Instagram all right guys what I did I made a little move down here we've got a little more wind down here it's not super bad but I ended up put down a drift sock or a sinker and I'm using that basically slow the boat down instead of having to use the trolling motor to move it now I'm gonna slow it down just a little bit I put a big one out I'm gonna creep along through here very slowly I got a big 10-foot easterland drift sock out the back and that's really gonna slow this boat down and be able to move through here about point three point four put that bait in front of them for a nice long time well guys made a pretty long pull across the mouth of this Creek here and I got those two small fish coming up on the hump here not real hard to miss it I think I'm not seeing a lot of is burs typically at this time of year we see birds out here and I see one seagull that tells me the baiting right here so that might be part of my issue but again a good way to cover water drifting trolling is a good way to cover water I got a good spread out just a a couple of the fish came on planer boards so again they they pay off get to spread wider cover more water figure out what's going on and that's what I'm doing today hitting a few different places covering some different types of water a fish the main Lake around the river channel and then to the mountain to the creek I think next I'm gonna go back into a creek and see what's happening there same guys I'm just reeling some stuff in to make a move here coming up on a shallow shallow area fish on that I was reeling stuff them to move it this rod feels like it's got a fish on it I think it's a good fish honestly pull in a couple of rods are sitting here they're in yep that's the fish I just felt a head shake making sure to snap off the tree Liam I stacked up one of my lines on some brush I'm only in about five feet of water then that funny how that works sometimes you get up here to a shallow area that's where fish are some winter time it's cold water that's the PD bank that way I'm not always not always and not here it's a good fish try to get a bug on the good this is a shot again dude how about a met nobody I boga need some grease you sticking out on me this is amateur hour folks amateur hour it's funny it's coming at hubs huh sort of pulling stuff in I seem to get are so I'm thinking man maybe I don't need to pull me in but then I hung something up that's a good idea I want to reel this rod to perfect hook sit in the corner of the mouth please hey slap a bait it's a good bleep Bank nice blue cat nice one there looking fish tell me some pictures love well Instagram love gorgeous fish fish get him back a lot baby all right guys catch the fever rod back here in the corner Oh pinky made a move into the back of the creek what'd I tell you look around see what's going on kept they're supposed to be deep right now I'd say waters get colder look at that sonar screen and see what's on it figure out real quickly why they're in here baits in here why's the bait in here who knows plankton better who knows but it is what it is what it is what it is and that's where the bait said and that's where the fish are gonna be and that's where they're at they said in the monster but it looks a whole lot more promising in here than it does out there so we're gonna drag through here a little bit just see what happens maybe a difference in the bind it may not I guess the whole point is don't get too hung up on where fish are supposed to be go where it looks like they are so like channel cat again definitely been elusive with theĆ”-- blues today I get more channel cat by self had in a while interesting color on that when I think you just got my lens dirty it's finished it's still feeding homemade rattle there have a small piece of bait the big fish today did come on a bigger bait did take a bigger bait but yes I had one of the small channel cats on a big old perche hits it to get them back in the water tiny catch them up another small one that's alright we'll take it we'll take it we're happy to keep catching them a little less wind back here I'm trolling into the end normally don't do that but I'll do it like today cuz it's a mild wind I like going with the wind to make a difference I don't know people make arguments either way on that some say fish staged up differently because of the movement of the plankton movement of the bait fish who knows I don't get crazy Everett I was crazy is this channel cat that's going nuts that it's a gosh that looks like the last one yeah hey little bit of color patterns that that's a feisty fish but stitches are very water easy easy easy you're going back getting the light color on them like coloration the olden looking you're on TV you come be on YouTube no I'm not catfish Dave yeah I know who he yep that just go back in water boom [Music] Kelly dude it is funny that's three fish in a row in this Creek on this rod I'll take a closer look at what I got on here as far as the rig and we may have had one earlier I have to do a little quick flashback in the video to see if I called Amy out you're on the main Lake on this run but I think all three fishermen in this Creek I've come on this ride I'm big so we're happy to be catching some peach well I did a lot of crap in the water back here a lot of debris lot of leaves a lot of stuff flushing in here from the rain we had this weekend I would assume there's sticks and stuff it doesn't just like blow in one interesting thing back here is it stuff's floating on top of the water out on the main Lake it sticks for vertical they say I don't know who day yes but they say when those sticks are vertical fish don't bite another channel same channel kit Sitti yeah you ever heard that vertical sticks fish don't bite no it's true wait fella pop loose it makes you wonder I said that's three I'm gonna set up another channel can't get him back it's it to rig here let that rattle where's that the smaller bait the only thing that's really any different get her back in the water is it the real can they see if the line and they know that's the real all I know is catch some fish you know makes me a happy fisherman well folks if you made it this far thank you for watching please consider subscribing and here are a couple of more videos that I think you're gonna like [Music]
