checked fees are bad enough I talked about them  last week Airline baggage fees for carry-on that   doesn't meet the constantly changing  carry-on baggage rules total Minefield   with this video hopefully you won't ever  need to pay for carry-on luggage again with Airlines losing luggage like its Loose  Change more and more people are opting to   travel ultra light with carry-on luggage only  unfortunately this has created a whole new set   of problems that Airlines need to deal with like  for example making sure there's enough room in   the overhead bins for everybody's carry-on  and of course in an effort to avoid checking   bags some people like to stretch the limits of  what actually counts as carry-on luggage which   in turn has made Airlines counteract with some  strict policies here's how you can play by the   rules creatively without paying those pesky  overweight Airline baggage fees at the end   I will share a super sneaky hack to get around  oversized overweight luggage I've never used it   myself but apparently it works a charm there are  three scenarios when your carry-on luggage might   get weighed and if it's overweight you might be  charged a fee or be forced to check it one is at   the check-in desk and maybe before security and  maybe at the gate the check-in desk is actually   the easiest one to avoid and we'll get into how  to do that in a minute the carry-on scales before   security now that was something new to me last  year I was leaving on a four-month trip with   carry-on only and I was feeling pretty smug about  my slightly overweight carry-on luggage because I   figured it wasn't going to get weighed because  I was using one of the check-in kiosks at the   airport to print my boarding pass as long as  I wasn't at the check-in counter with the big   luggage scales I figured I'd be in the clear  right not so much apparently I'm not the only   person to think this so in some airports that  primarily use these check-in kiosks there is   now somebody standing at the end of the entrance  hall before you go through security this person   who worked for the airline stopped me and asked  to see my boarding pass no problemo I thought   they're just checking boarding passes to make  sure somebody doesn't unwittingly go through   the wrong security lineup then she asked me to  put my bag on the scale beside her luckily for   me she evidently didn't like her job nor did she  think weighing carry-on luggage was a particularly   good idea so she let me pass through anyway even  though I was a couple of team lows overweight   but this does prompt my first tip for avoiding  overweight carry-on baggage fees and that is to   know the carry-on baggage rules Airline policies  for carry-on luggage weight limits vary but some   of the stricter ones include Air Canada American  Airlines British Airways Delta United Airlines   Lufthansa and Qantas and this says nothing of  the budget Airlines most of which are going to   be the same as these or potentially even worse  so when you book your ticket take a close look   at both the dimensions and weight limits for  carry-on luggage and if at all possible try   to stay within those limits now let's talk about  how to avoid the check encounter shall we because   it's still pretty rare that there's somebody  weighing bags before security so if you can   get through the check-in process without having  your bags weighed you're most likely to be in   the clear the first way to avoid the checking  counter is to travel with carry-on luggage   only if you have to check a bag the person at the  baggage drop counter is going to weigh your check   bag but they may also ask you to put your carry-on  luggage on the scale if you're interested in   learning some carry-on packing tricks check out my  episode on how to pack a carry-on suitcase in the   description ultimately the fewer people you need  to deal with between leaving home and getting on   the plane the better the chances are that you  won't get nailed with overweight luggage fees   and traveling with carry-on luggage is only one  way to do that another way to avoid the checking   counter is to check in online before you go to the  airport with your boarding pass on your phone you   can Breeze straight through the departures Hall  and go directly to security and onwards to your   gate security by the way doesn't care how heavy  your carry-on luggage is they do care about what's   inside your carry-on luggage which I address in  another episode check the description for a link   to learn how to navigate TSA lineups like a pro  also before you leave home make sure you bring   a large tote or backpack as your personal item in  addition to your carry-on luggage you are allowed   to bring a personal item onto the plane that fits  underneath the seat in front of you maximize this   space and fill it with your heaviest items because  rarely if ever will your personal item get weighed   so don't just bring a Wii purse or a laptop  bag like many Airline websites suggest look   at the personal item dimensions on the website  and bring the largest bag you possibly can even   if you don't fill it to capacity it's nice to  have the extra space in case your carry-on bag   does get weighed and you need to reallocate  some items or in case you pick up a few things   at your destination that you want to bring home  with you now let's say you get to the airport   and you can't avoid the check-in counter or the  airline Sentinel before security what do you do   if your carry-on is overweight never fear there  is still hope first of all hopefully you go to   the airport early this gives you the time to deal  with lightening your load or at least lightening   the load that gets weighed if your carry-on is  overweight step out of the line and do any of   the following things one move heavy stuff to your  personal item bag if that's already full of heavy   stuff then you can keep unloading your carry-on  luggage with the following tips wear your heavy   stuff shoes jackets sweaters whatever heavy stuff  you can get out of your luggage and onto your body   won't count towards weight limits a few ways to  do this effectively include filling your pockets   anything heavy that you can't actually wear can go  into your pockets want to level up this strategy a   hip pack is actually considered personal apparel  so if you pack this full of stuff and strap it   on your carry-on bag just got even lighter bonus  a hip pack like this anti-theft one from pacsafe   is super useful at your destination as well out  the trick is to actually wear it as a hip pack   instead of as a sling when you're checking in it's  more low profile that way and with slings being   all the ridge these days some Airline staff might  try to call it a purse and not personal apparel   it's a real fine line also if you are traveling  with checked luggage and that's under the weight   limit then consider taking some of the heavy  stuff out of your carry-on and switching it for   some lighter stuff in your check luggage along  those lines if you are traveling with somebody   else whose bags are under the weight limit  consider redistributing stuff between your   bags collectively okay here's my final carry-on  hack that I've never done myself but that could   save you some Hefty carry-on baggage fees ready  bring a pillowcase you know those big bulky neck   pillows that people like to bring that I've never  actually found comfortable if you've ever traveled   with one you'll know that Airlines don't care  about them they don't consider pillows luggage   so you could conceivably bring a pillowcase and  fill it with your stuff that would normally go   into your luggage clothes jackets whatever this  could save you not only weight but also bulk which   could allow you to bring more stuff and still  stay within carry-on limitations and of course   if your pillowcase is full of clothes and stuff  it can still be used as a pillow on your flight   have you ever done the pillowcase hack are there  other strategies that I haven't shared here that   can help Travelers avoid overweight carry-on bag  fees please drop a comment and collectively let's   all travel Smart in style I'm Nora Dunn aka  the professional hobo and thanks for watching [Music] foreign
