hey folks i'm peter melhorn are you having problems anchoring your boat when you're trying to fish well watch this video i'm gonna try to help you out well folks there's only really two ways to fish from a boat it's either in a moving boat or it's in an anchored boat and uh if you're like me i do a lot of fishing from an anchored boat in some situations it's very easy if you're out in the ocean or in a river you just toss out one anchor the current snaps you straight and locks you into position and you're fishing but a lot of us like myself fish on lakes and reservoirs where there is no current uh and generally when that happens there's just a little bit of wind from the wrong direction and there is nothing worse than when you are trying to fish to have your boat swaying back and forth now with today's technology a lot of us can use a trolling motor trolling motors have spot lock and position lock on them to where it uses gps technology to hold you in place and in many situations this is really cool stuff and it's good enough to keep your boat where you want it however there are times when we want virtually no boat movement and that's when you need to put out uh anchors and the best way to do that on a lake or reservoir is using two anchors now i'm gonna go over how i do it some people will vary this around a little bit i'll give you kind of a couple of ways to do this but i start out with an anchor off the bow first this anchor here from never lost they make a great anchor it's a grapple style it comes with the chain already attached to it uh this is what i run off of my bow i'm gonna put a link to never lost down in the description below where you can check them out if you're looking for an anchor i put one of these off of the bow my boat first uh if i am depending on the depth of water i try to run a five to seven to one ratio for how much rope i put out so if i am in 20 feet of water i need at least five times that much rope out so that would be a hundred feet maybe uh if i'm going to you know a little more wind maybe uh a seven to one maybe i'm putting out 140 150 feet but let's just say i want to put out a hundred feet of line of anchor rope what i will do is i will drop the anchor and start backing down and i've got notches on my rope with little ties that mark these length measurements i'll get to 100 foot point and i will keep going i will keep backing the boat down backing the boat down letting robe out until i get to the 150 foot mark at that point i'll tie it off quickly to the bow i'll go to the back and i will toss out my back anchor and you'll figure out what's going to happen here in a second i'll pull that out to the 50-foot mark which i have marked on my anchor rope tied off to my cleat and then i will go back to the bow and start pulling in line or pulling it in pulling it in and it will get me back right when i get around to that 100 foot mark that back line is going to start coming tight so what's going to happen is you're going to have both of these slack lines laying there and they're going to snap tight and your boat is going to be in the middle of them it is a great way to keep your boat from swaying back and forth in windy situations now some boats do uh sway and catch the wind more than others and it's not 100 percent effective you are not going to be fishing off of a pier uh when you do this on a con night calm day it will it'll set it uh in place uh really nicely all right guys i'm gonna take you through the steps of how i anchor my boat uh i know describing this in studio sounds a lot simpler maybe more confusing than but it actually is so i'm gonna show you how to do it what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna anchor there's a river ditch right here where i'm at so i want an anchor to be able to put lines right here so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna run up onto the bank i'm going forward with the boat now and what i'm going to do is go to the bow in a second once i kind of get where i'm on top of this channel edge none of this is important this is just my precision anchoring of where i'm at what's important is the process i use for deploying the anchors and setting them up so pulling forward gonna figure out where i want my boat back there is what it comes down to so what i will do is pull up here and then i'm gonna drop out my bow anchor first uh put the boat in reverse go back that way put out my back anchor and pull it tight in between you'll see how all this works it'll make sense so i'm up into about 12 feet of water it's about where i want to be i'm going to go to the bow and put out the anchor and one thing you can do put your boat in neutral uh knock it into reverse so your boat's not moving maybe get it going back just a little bit if you're doing this alone i don't advise you to throw the anchor out with a boating gear just in case you should fall in you're in a world of trouble so just get it neutral get it going back a little bit now i'm gonna go throw out the bow anchor okay guys one of the never lost anchors with the chain all right going i'm just gonna let that line start going out i'm gonna go put it in reverse and back it to where i want it what i'm gonna do is just start backing up now in the direction where i want the boat to sit rope is going out across the bow and i will let it go out probably in this depth of water i'm only in about 10 feet i'll probably let out about 100 feet of rope right there is my hundred foot mark i'm gonna put out my back anchor so what's gonna happen back here is i'm gonna take my back anchor toss it into the water try to chunk it out there pretty good ways it's gonna go to the bottom i'm going to give it some extra line not that much and i'm going to tie this off onto a cleat over here just like that with that line secure now what i'm going to do is go back to the bow pull in line this will come tight and we'll be cinched up in between two tight ropes at this point i can go ahead and kill the motor if we don't need it anymore what i'm doing up here i'm just going to pull this line tight and i got a camera back there on the back that is watching that back rope it will start going out and becoming tighter as i pull this rope tight i'll do is keep an eye on the back it's getting tight poof and when i do is just creep it tighter and tighter here that looks pretty set right there tied off to my cleat over here you can see that line out the back is tight it's tied off onto a cleat then my bow line is tight and it's tied off onto a cleat there you go guys that's the system uh like i said sometimes it's easier to show you guys how to do it than it is to describe it uh sometimes things in theory sound easier than they are this is not hard to do so uh hopefully that kind of clears it up for you another trick you can do depending if you're trying to really precision fishing area is reverse the process uh and what i mean by that is get your boat basically where you want the back of it to be sitting or somewhat close put your anchor in the water there and run out 100 150 feet of line out the back drop your front anchor and then pull back to that one some people like one way over another one i personally prefer doing the bow first because i can put out a lot more line i keep more line in my bow anchor locker and that technique works for me depending on your application you can do it off the back first general rule of thumb though is make sure that bow is into the wind or whatever a little bit of current there may be in the area that you're fishing that provides the smallest most narrow profile for the wind to catch on and it helps reduce that sway and that turn back and forth uh in the wind now one other good little tip uh if you can do it on the anchor you have the never lost anchors are built this way so that you can tie off to the back of the anchor back at this end most people would tie off up here but these are attached to the back you're going well why are you doing that well you look here at the front there's a zip tie that attaches this chain to this little tie-off point up here you can see right there if this anchor was to get caught on something say a limb or underneath a rock no matter how you pull you're not going to get it past that and there's no real way to go backwards with it because you're just going to lift up on it and dig that into it further now what this zip tie does is when you get over that anchor and you're pulling on it pulling on you realize it's stuck if you start going in the opposite direction that you went in to set the anchor so if you dropped your anchor here and we're going this way to set the anchor when you're up over it trying to pull it up go the other way it will pull this chain tight it will pull against this zip tie and with a little bit of effort that zip tie is going to pop and when it pops you're pulling off the back of the anchor here and it'll drag it right out across whatever you had in there so it's a good little trick like i said these never lost anchors are built that way they sell them this way already rigged up you can do it at home with your uh anchor that you have as long as it has a place to attach it at the back it's a good little pro tip that you can use so that you can get these anchors back because it's no fun having to cut that anchor rope and leave it at the bottom hear that lee that's your fire truck going by making all that noise trying to work here buddy trying to work well folks if you made it this far thank you for watching here are a couple more videos that i think you're gonna like i'd watch that one and then that one no no do do that one first and then that one i don't just watch them both they're both
