If you fall though you are going to put your foot through the window and potentially cut your femoral artery..

channels mine down a blue beaker [Music] [Applause] hey did you know you can get a king of random project delivered to your house every month click the link in the description to find out how and let's get into today's video alright turns out a single piece of duct tape is a terrible gag you can easily just lick it off so I've seen that in a lot of movies and TV shows it really doesn't work and if you're tying someone up with duct tape you really kinda need to use a lot of layers it breaks fairly easily so I'm not trying to tell you how you should kidnap people I'm just telling you that that's not a good way to do it anyway let's pretend that you were kidnapped by someone and they locked you up in a second or higher story room but they were foolish enough to leave behind their duct tape today we want to see what we could do with that is this a tool we could use to escape here's the basic idea we're going to test just how strong duct tape really is can you successfully use it to escape from a second-story window or will I fall to my death so here's the deal we've got an open second-story window we've got a lot of duct tape this is quite a bit this is a big role and the idea is that we want to see if it's possible to build a ladder an escape route out this window down to the ground below and we're gonna try and do the entire thing just with duct tape we're gonna attach it to the wall the ideas we'll have two ropes and then like I'll make some rungs in between the two that will sort of give me a handhold that's climb down I'm going to try and do it 100% with duct tape pull ladders duct tape is attached to the wall with duct tape and I'm going to try and climb down it however because even in the best of situations we do want to make sure we're being safe we have an emergency backup and that is a professional climbing rope mounted to the ceiling I'm gonna be in a full climbing harness Kalli my captor is actually going to be down below safely blaming me in case my duct-tape ladder fails so we are going to try and actually climb down from this window using a duct tape rope and then just to make sure I don't fall and die we're gonna have a professional climbing rope there as well you'll be fine I will the first test I think is to see how much duct tape we need to hold my weight so we're actually just going to leave our little tower prison and we're gonna go downstairs do the jungle gym we're gonna see how many layers of duct tape I need before it hold my weight hanging on a bar my sinister captor is here on the swing making it making sure I don't escape we got this she's conveniently letting me do some tests about my escape method though very kind of her it's my job today to make sure that Nate doesn't die I'm just gonna keep looping layers of tape and I'm gonna start with like you start him broke out of five with your wrists I say start with them and I do think that angle has a lot to do with it and what we're probably gonna want to do is after we have some layers of it we might want to wrap another band of duct tape down it's sort of an angle so that the sideways pole won't just tear right through all of it absolutely that's something you even we discussed when we were tying him up was the fact that there's something called the phone book effect where if you've got a rip somewhere you can actually tear through it much easier you want to make sure that everything is flat layered nicely and then wrap around it five gotta say this is actually feeling very sturdy yeah that's so I am still in favor of the wrapping but I do think I can do a test with just these ten layers and I would be very surprised if this doesn't hold me got a nice smooth bar it's not gonna like bite into it anywhere I'm gonna try and just hold on see if this takes my weight now oh yeah that is that is plenty of strength I'd say you'll swing and see if it will tear it's not Terry Oh ten layers absolutely it's trying to pull my weight so I'm thinking we have ten and then we have a second one and then we make rungs tying between the two of them and we are just I'm just gonna have a ladder that I can climb up and down no problem all right now for those rungs what's your plan you're going to be looping more - no yeah no I'm probably giving you ten layers per rung take it about like this about that far apart and then just wrap it around that ladder yeah it's not like a full bladder but it's just enough I can grab hands feet it's wide enough I can fit my foot in it and if we're feeling any bit uncomfortable about this we've got some climbing shoes that it will actually stick better to this tape if he needs them all right let's go make our ladder full size lower down I am the more it's gonna stretch all right that is touching the ground I don't even need it to touch the ground but I just need to climb out a window safely so I've got my first layer my rope and now I need 10 more layers yep I would not refuse help I might be the most helpful captor of all time probably we've got two halves of our ladder the two different sides and now we need to add some rungs that go over down so same idea we're gonna try for about ten layers just wrapping around and it's it's going to be obviously a very flexible ladder but the idea should just still be that we can have something to hold on to footholds climb down and then of course we'll try and make sure that it's very well secured to the wall we will be adding more tape and as Nate was pointing out this isn't gonna be a full-sized ladder just enough for footholds and handles so we got to put more tape on now that's ten however with this this is where I'm more worried about tearing if I have left hand on there and it's twisting sideways so I want to add some angles to it as well what worried about your hand that it's not gonna seem sharp until that's supporting your full weight so I can be very comfortable must you round it out now to find out won't we all right we are ready to start testing out our duct-tape ladder which is attached to the wall with more duct tape however in case it's not strong enough we're also using a professional harness this is a rock climbing harness with a rock climbing rope going through points anchored into the support beams in the ceiling and even if my duct-tape ladder just breaks tears let's go something like that I'll only fall like eight inches before the Rope catches me it may not be very comfortable because climbing harnesses really aren't but it's gonna be a whole lot better than if I just fell so I should be safe not to mention the fact that we have enough friction going through he could technically rappel down on his own but this isn't a rappelling line which is static meaning there's no gift this is a sport climbing rope so it does have a little bit of give a little bit of Bounce which is actually gonna be more comfortable in the case of a fall but he can actually just support his own weight so one hand down pulling myself back up a little bit like it's gonna be very easy to stop me from falling if I start falling it's just all right I'm gonna head downstairs and actually go hook myself into the other side of this mess make sure make him survive escaping me now this isn't how I expected my first climb of the season to go but okay I also didn't expect to be doing my first climb of the season and jeans but you know so it goes all right you're on belay thank goodness standing near a window is a terribly dangerous place to be without a belay exactly I'm just gonna lean back now don't let me fall yeah I think we're good so now I am safely on belay which means that Callie is down there below and she can catch me if I were to fall she'll keep the rope almost tight you can see there's still some slacks in play there's nothing lifting me up it's not reducing my weight at all but if I do drop down then she catches me either ceiling catches me the harness catches me and I don't actually go anywhere so now I'm gonna try and climb out the window and climb down my duct-tape ladder we'll see how it goes we do have this as a safety just in case I'm not really an expert at climbing out windows so I'm not sure what the best approach is supposed to be I'm just gonna try it like this this is the part where nate expects me to be giving him slack and i'm not going to please give me some slack i need to lower myself down thank you more slack it's all on your end now you got about two feet to give [Music] wrong wrong side nope no no I don't like this weird flex but okay little more slack it's all the flex it's if you fall though you're gonna we're gonna tangle up mark [Music] more slack that's all the slack you is all in your it's just friction I mean I'm just standing on the ladder now yeah you're not your feet on your just hanging from it yep okay you're just getting down with the friction there's so much friction hey what you survived escaped you escaped me you managed a bladder literally tied to me right I climbed down using duct tape that's neat yeah keep me on tight belay yeah you going back up at least a little bit I'm just gonna use the duct tape as kind of a rope and then just climb up the side of house you got it on belay I'm like one tighter belay on my way oh that's where the Rope is rubbing just yeah let go I don't like that Robbie you did it I worked pretty slick actually Peter duct tape it was okay so things that did not surprise me I'm not surprised it worked I thought it would we did test it's really strong I thought it was gonna stretch more like I thought it would stretch a lot more I didn't feel like it was fishing at all I was just I mean it's not the most comfortable ladder but it was easy to climb up and down would this work out of a taller window I'd say yeah if you have enough duct tape you can see that this isn't super far like if I reach my hand up the window is probably only six or seven feet above the top of my fingers and especially if you were willing to you know drop and roll at the bottom and hopefully not break an ankle you don't have to get all the way to the ground so just to get to a point where you could safely climb out doesn't even take that much duct tape say there's a third or fourth storey window obviously you would need a lot more this was holding up really well I didn't feel like here isn't stretching I didn't feel like there was any tearing I felt like you're as well secured up at the top overall this worked really nicely I do just want to say although this rope seemed quite sturdy we are not reckon anything that you try and do this for fun the test was whether or not it could work in an emergency situation so we are not saying that you should build ropes out of duct tape and climb a tree window in fact we're saying you should not do that but we just wanted to know if it were possible guys thanks for watching you know that's not all we've always got more for you to see click up there to watch your most recent video and we'll see you in the next one talk to you then [Music]
