two years a tweet has lived in my head for two years unfortunately while I have the tweet I can't show it to you because while I assume you to be a morally decent person I can't guarantee that for the person who watched this before or after you so you're gonna have to take my word the tweet for the most part was a user asking a prominent staff member of Molly McGee if season two was going to be darker and have those disney-ism said oh I don't know the last four other shows before it had and said staff member would go on to say ah of course not why do you assume every show has to go the same route it's lived in my head for two years because at that moment in time everyone saw it as a dunk yeah man Disney shows are all unique in their own way even though the first episode to all five of these shows has a young child preferably a girl travel to a new place feeling like a fish out of water and they can't go back to where they initially wanted to and they're stuck in this new world learning more about themselves alongside the first season for the most part I will admit that is right about one thing Molly McGee's second season is not dark but after watching this second season I wish they would have done that instead but let's rewind oh the cool semi McGee is a Disney supernatural comedy animated show it features a young Thai American Molly McGee and her family moving to the town of Brighton although she would end up being cursed to be around scratch the local ghost of the Town whose responsibility is to make the town as miserable as possible to feed his chairman over the course of the first season Molly would make it her mission to inhabify Brighton directly working against scratch's job to make the place as miserable as possible which would put scratch in danger of being casted away to the flow of filled Phantoms for all of eternity the duo would have a rocky start but would pretty much become good friends around the middle of the season if not a bit earlier although Molly and scratch would go on to have a lot of Adventures there was a ticking clock via the misery meter getting closer to Joy which led into the last two episodes of the Season dealing with the ramifications of scratch not doing his job this led into scratch into a lesser extent Molly confrencing and killing the chairman and releasing the flow of filled Phantoms saving the day and releasing the commitment of spreading misery to ghosts all around without rehashing my video video speaking about the first season I would go on to say that I enjoyed this season a lot I even called it perfect there's not a single bigger fan in this YouTube reviewer community of Molly McGee than me and you can check underneath the rug you're not gonna find them and I say it to say that what this first season was it really gave me hope that I can enjoy something on Disney that wasn't being buried and didn't also go through the dizzyisms a nice wacky fun-loving comedic platonic good show that wanted to be a solid 11 minutes of your time but didn't mind giving you the occasional lore here and there stay back home do whatever you want to be but don't you hurt friend ha I knew it the whole time Your Friends season two would start out with the family moving across the street from the McGee's who appear to be perfect the Chen family ruber and Esther Chen and their children Juniper and Oliver the families would get along in a way where you would think they were made for each other Oliver nicknamed Ali would catch the eye of Molly with an m and the pair would develop romantic feelings towards each other the catch the Chen family is a ghost hunting family who moved here because of the ghost hunting potential now as you know Molly and scratch would become best friends in season one and this would mean that Molly would have to either pick between the two or somehow make this work out the problem is that season 2 so far fails in every single aspect in a way I've never been this disappointed since fairly odd apparent season 10 almost a decade ago within season 1 scratch would have to involuntarily communicate with the ghost Council who don't like him because of the way that he carries himself and that he's at the bottom of the social totem pole it would become clear that everyone veers the chairman because he has the ability to cast you away to an afterlife time of suffering we know that the ghosts are sent to specific towns to keep them miserable however it is assumed that not every ghost does this as there are some aspects of the ghost life town like the club scene VIPs only yes I know this is a VIP only club and here is my official VIP card [Music] you're a nobody I made that did you have to tear it I love the dynamic here and it gave scratch a life outside of Molly that was interesting to see we'd also see that he tried to balance his job with his growing friendship with Molly failing to do both and sticking to the latter we get to see Jeff scratch his best friend who enjoys his company a lot but isn't exactly the smartest in the ghostly room as a continuation of the ghost Lord it fails spectacularly in the second season we left season 1 without a ghost leader as the chairman was destroyed and season 2 answers this by having the ghost Council largely directionless until scratch picks up the responsibility becoming a new chairman you said there is no chairman unless you've changed your mind fine good responsibility the season is trying to portray two different things first that they need a chairman or else things will descend into chaos as the Ghost World will listen to a chairman but then also it's trying to portray that scratch is still the same person viewed as the same person and doesn't have any vested interests in being within the Ghost World outside of the perks of becoming a chairman these things don't mix well scratch is not bound to Molly anymore due to the small Arc where Molly was going to lose her home thus breaking the curse when they had to move out for a short while this does not stop multiple episodes within season 2 completely ignoring the ghost dynamic as if the entire first season wasn't building up to a battle with its leader it picks and chooses when the lack of an active leader matters typically in the same way a type of ghost leaks out of the ghost world into the human world and now they have to deal with it let everyone go upstairs please unless you want to get caught by Ghost Hunters fine we'll go but what about them does anyone weird slurping no food or drink in the store on my watch [Music] nightmares they survive on chaos scratch being the chairman has no weight and this matters because it makes the Journey of season one feel like it doesn't matter if the ramifications of all of it can be swept under the rug which it was let's look at another show Danny Phantom within that show the ghost aspect was balanced with Dany not wanting to tell anyone about it being a superhero at times but being a plain ordinary student at time neither side was neglected and we end up learning about the Ghost World just as much as we learned about the city its citizens and how Dany fits in the world as well if Danny Phantom did what The Ghost and Molly McGee did the first season would have you build up Dany eventually going into the ghost portal and turning half ghosts only for season two to throw all that away to make room for mostly school-centric stories with a Sprinkle of ghosts here and there the a suit of you would realize I'm describing the third season of Danny Phantom which is the least-like season more importantly scratch does not seem to care about the chairman role which would be completely okay if you know his personality if not for the fact that it changes nothing about him or how people view him the chairman man was a feared creature because his word mattered to have the ghost Council that treated him like dirt now kiss the ground that he walks on should present some sort of dynamic change within the ghost world as they were second in command to the former chairman and thus would have an accurate pulse on if a chairman Riven really needs to exist but not only does scratch not take himself seriously a lot of the Ghost World doesn't seem to really either if you watch the afterlife of the party scratch's entire plot is that he's trying to hide from Jeff so that he can visit Jeff's party without Jeff knowing I just realized that the captions are actually really important here so you can understand the difference of what I'm trying to talk about now while the twist of it being their anniversary party is a nice feel-good moment Jeff and Jinx within this episode show that they're not afraid of scratch and his Newfound Authority in fact appearing to have more skill more intimidation and a better reputation than the chairman that was so desperately needed if you ever hurt my angel Jeff again you'll answer to me got it yes sir if you watch the episode The unhaunting of Brighton video a ghost named Blair is occupying a former video rental store and even when scratch puts on his chairman authoritative voice she know sells it and to add insult to injury scratch isn't even the one to solve this haunting despite being the leader of ghosts deliciously this isn't to say that scratch doesn't have interesting things going on around him in season two probably the most interesting episode to revolve around him so far is assorted to remember an episode where scratch appears to be burying his past life only giving us a snippet as to what's to come this was a decent episode with an interesting tease that I want to see but a new story doesn't make the old story better this still has nothing to do with the ghost world that you've so eagerly built up in the first season 2 matter so much sure this is only eight of the however many episodes we're getting in season two but the issue is rather than trying to continue or at least tying up the loose ends of the old stories it would much rather throw new stories onto the mix which sets up an annoying precedent where things matter less so what would be the point in investing into this now you may ask what does the ghost aspects have to do with the romance the romance was a replacement for a lot of the ghostly aspects of the show so if you're going to replace it surely it should be good but to fully show you why the Romantic angle within the ghost world sucks I will do what I do best I will tell you what the season could have been [Music] as mentioned before a selection of ghosts were hand-picked to spread misery to places all around the world surely from a human perspective if they encounter a ghost acting hostile towards them they'll come away from that interaction not liking ghosts this Behavior gets repeated for a long time and a stigma is formed don't interact with ghosts because they exist just to haunt humans add on to the fact that specific ghosts do enjoy the aspect of hunting joy and that scaring in itself is akin to a recreational Sport and you can see where this is headed now if you also remember the end of season 1 was the end of the chairman meaning that the obligations a haunt is done however the catch is that people that Ali and his family who are ghost hunters or who claim to be Ghost Hunters would not know that scratch in his kind did what they did mostly out of obligation and they don't have to do it anymore outside of a few bad eggs will continue to do it now to me that sounds like a cooler Story the idea that even if you try to live on a clean slate people will always tie you to your past and your very visible reputation think of how many YouTubers you know and that you watch who have done something bad in the past but have moved on from it but there will always be people who tie them to their past that could have been the commentary for this season and that's just one example while scratch was converted into not wanting to spread misery via Molly's infectious optimism and in happify Mission that doesn't change the fact that he did and he did very well for a long time and that a lot of his peers did the same now remember that's just one idea I'm not saying that my idea has to be the idea I'm just putting my idea on the table it could be any other idea but this season had its own idea because that's not what this season is about at all this season is about cute boy moving in and cute boy liking main character but cute boy has potentially deal-breaking traits that will create artificial will they or won't they tension to brute force a certain type of viewer into watching the show more to see if main character and cute boy get together I say this because not once the scratch explained that he used to spread misery but he no longer does not once does Molly explain when she knows that scratch and Ollie can interact now that she was instrumental and making sure that most ghosts are not Shackled to their previous Chairman's deed of misery Ali barely even explains why he personally doesn't like ghosts or even why he thinks they have the ability to manipulate humans so that he does with scratch and Molly now one may bring up that their kids and wouldn't be able to discuss Grand Concepts such as beating a supernatural entity and releasing ghosts from a hell-like place in a clear way well for one scratch isn't a kid but more importantly too if you believe that then let's have a conversation the ghost of Michael McGee distinguish itself from the shows around it by being a supernatural comedy balancing a family driven moral driven riding Style with moments of crazy or morally gray moments while it never reached the levels of its Cartoon Network counterparts it was more daring of a comedy than what Nickelodeon provides and I think those three different levels will suit three different people in the same way that some people like their food plain or mild and then some people like it a little bit more spicy and some people just want to crap out a neuron star once they finish their burrito it had its funny moments and it never felt too preachy although it definitely did fall into that trap a few times season 2 however lost whatever magic they had with these episodes but let's start with the good there are two troubling factors in what makes the good episodes good in this season the first aspect is that the good episodes tend to now be the preachy morally driven episodes 100 Molly McGee is the best episode that the season can provide so far which is troubling for reasons that we'll get into when we talk about the Bad episodes so the episode is about how Molly's Thai family comes to visit and she feels out of place because she can't fully enjoy their Traditions the way that she enjoys her American traditions it makes her feel as if she isn't Thai enough which creates a sense of insecurity well yeah stir me up some of that seaweed goodness but Molly it's really spicy [Music] you two are so funny she tries very hard to fit in but little does she know there is no tie enough but rather if she acted as herself and enjoy the aspects that she likes she would have been more than good enough I came away from this episode enjoying it for the story like with another episode of period piece which is an episode about the menstrual cycle these episodes tend to work better because it's less about the comedy and more about the message of the story which are the better examples of what I can provide however the ghost in Molly McGee was both once a comedy show and a story driven show but the comedy does not stack up the way it once did comedy is subjective of course but the issue is that the stories that they wish to tell like these two would not be sold or marketed under comedic value but about the message that they want to portray and that isn't to say that Molly McGee needs to be wacky or even wacky or in fact it very much was wacky but that the wacky aspects are clearly now a side dish to the main course of telling you what's right and wrong the other troubling aspect is that the better episodes tend to not focus on Molly McGee arguably the main reason why anyone should be watching the show ideally Davenport on-demand deals for Andrea a sort of prominent season 1 character who had a rough introduction to Molly but towards the end of the first season shows that she does care about Molly because Molly cares about her a rich girl a popular girl a self-centered social media socialite Andrea was both not protected and allowed to beat a butt of the Jokes which helped make her more balanced as a character but more importantly they gave her a slow burning backstory of wanting to impress her parents who don't seem to be around for her as much as they care more about the money and fame than their own daughter who's trying to emulate their steps with very little guidance we can't take down this app it's too good for business our business sure but what about everyone else's their business is their business button Big Fish always eat the little fish it's Nature's Way speaking of nature Davenport's camping gear two percent off not including fees while supplies last within this episode she finally starts to become skeptical of her father's intent as their company is driving out the local businesses and their families alongside them while it isn't resolved in this episode it added a new layer to her character as well as a reason to want to see more of Andrea Daryl also had a little bit of progression his slow burning story has been that he's a troubling kid who doesn't think before he acts instead acting on impulse similar to Molly but with less care about other people's feelings or the feeling of being responsible for your own actions nevertheless he is a part of the McGee family and given the way that they write their show Daryl Centric episodes will always be a thing but how do you make them without telling the same story simple this episode does deal of Daryl being in trouble but combines the ghostly aspect of becoming a wraith [Music] awesome Daryl becomes ghostly but his physical form can still function albeit poorly which means that he can have fun while the other one works Molly is of course against this idea because it teaches Daryl that he can run away from his problems and not grow up to be a responsible young man meanwhile the McGee parents silently celebrate Daryl's creative and outlandish personality but at the same time don't want him to get kicked out of school putting their forever home at risk the physical form of Daryl the Daryl husk is doing all the schoolwork while he becomes loved by his family which offends Daryl as you would think that your family would notice when you're different Molly who in the same episode was highly against Daryl becoming a wraith would Point Blank out loud say that she enjoys a new Daryl I know you're just a body and not my real brother but oh no Shenanigans all schoolwork granted the justification attempted here is that you didn't know that the real Daryl was in a room and mentioned it more in a begrudging tone he contemplates leaving until he overhears the McGee parents within the same episode in which they were celebrating this new Daryl now begin to worry about him acting different and that seals the deal to go back into his body and while this wasn't a great episode it's better than a lot of what we had in this season there is a risk in being a morally driven show if the writing is bad then the moral comes across as heavy-handed and preachy and that's what faint of art is have you ever stared at a blank canvas and went I'm not a true artist because I can't make masterpieces yes well that is a relatable feeling to have in a creative space imposter syndrome this episode does nothing to make that conversation entertaining funny deep resonating or even just a decent 11 minute escapism while it is nice to see family moments like this let's look at what the show used to speak about the best of nintentions one of if not the best episode of season 1 speaks about Molly's mother Sharon and how she always had comes with their own mother about what she would end up in life and that led into constant arguments between them it ended up with Sharon being told that the main aspect that nin hated was that she gave up on her passions nin didn't like that I work hard so you could follow your dream a talented you always have been so stop selling pork and get back to your aunt likewise with this episode faints of art this could have been a great episode tackling the struggle Sharon has balancing her gig work and her creative work and being a mother and a wife showing that she has a lot on her plate showing that she can't just be creative at the drop of a dime however Molly and by extent the writing team are literally tripping over themselves to tell you the viewer that it's a part of the process to not feel creative sometimes that this episode comes off as one of the least creative attempts to talk about the creative process it feels like someone's patting me on my back and going it's okay Jay you're still an artist for 11 minutes usually when themes are brought up you explore them like if there was a theme on I don't know you can't please everyone there's so much to unpack there for example sometimes people have opposite goals and you can't please both of them sometimes people have the same goal but they want to go about it differently sometimes in an argument with your friend the friend is wrong but not their enemy you can bring up that sometimes people want to please others is because they're hypersensitive to conflict you can speak about how mentally training it is to be the friend who cleans up after other people's messes you can bring up that some people may get very difficult to be satisfied or happy you can bring up that some problems just can't be solved so much in that one phrase you can't please everyone that if you're a creative person you understand that there's so many stories to come out of that one world while it is not the worst episode it is the worst non-romance episode for sure the other problem that shows run into is that the episodes become less unique to the show and its writing style and its aesthetic and more generic copy and paste ideas normally this wouldn't be an issue to me because I love episodic shows a lot and I don't mind seeing the same tropes and episode ideas pasted across different shows that's what my versus series is really all about no one truly owns any of these writing ideas the episode is about Lord doom and Ultra violent ghosts causing trouble and being cursed into a baby doll Molly tries to convert him into being nice but over the course of the episode his intense attitude keeps being mistaken from malice leading it to him giving up and being given to a family that will appreciate get that side of him everyone has a spark of good in them and I am gonna fan that Sparks I know you're gonna say that yeah we still get no frame of reference as to what scratch is supposed to do here he comes off less as a chairman and more like a ghostly janitor cleaning up the messes that no one else appears to really care about in fact if anything it's episodes like this we're in a full of filled Phantom seem justified again what the dog to die for you see the ending a mile away and the episode doesn't do anything to subvert it or give an enjoyable Journey throughout not only this but bringing up that tweet again of not wanting to be like other Disney shows clearly Lord Doom is giving a lot of Lord hater Vibes to the point where multiple people have pointed that out not only that but the baby doll aspect is so Disney that it's puking up rainbows but only in June this is just a scary mean violent entity in a cutesy non-threatening body Trope I wonder if the owl house had that I wonder if Gravity Falls had that and look it's okay to borrow from other shows in fact I wish the team was quiet about it because at the very least it would make you look like you're not trying to downplay something that anyone who has eyes and ears can tell from a mile away you don't think there's people who enjoy Milo Murphy's Law also enjoy that is connected to the Phineas and Ferb Universe you don't think that there's people who enjoy that there's three SpongeBob shows out there that constantly borrow from one another I'm pretty sure there's people out there who even enjoyed a DC exploration within Teen Titans Go people love it when you borrow from other shows and it seems like this show is trying so hard not to come off as like the fifth version of the same show when in reality that's one of its biggest strengths because I don't know if you noticed this but these shows have literally been viewed as some of the best shows in modern animation oh and PS getting to my point back to them being kids I just spoke about five episodes so Molly had to have conversations about ethnicity representation gentrification responsibility imposter syndrome and deep-rooted habits portraying a stereotype and by the way I didn't even speak about a period piece which was about the menstrual cycle do you still believe that this same kid can speak about the fact that ghosts used to act a certain way but don't anymore there are more Bad episodes but rather than picking them apart each let's speak about what they all have in common Ollie we are now at the main event the reason why everyone is here but everything before this is super important you have to know how they fumbled the Ghost World back and how the non-romance episodes don't hit anymore because all of this was moved aside for one big thing the Romantic spark between Molly and Oliver there are five episodes that involve Ali so far and outside of book marks the Sprite Which was carried and saved by Libby's performance because the best part about the goal samani McGee is when Molly McGee isn't focused on those other four episodes are the worst episodes of the Season Point Blank let's start with The Season's Premiere Ollie fails at making a great first impression the first episode is about how the Chen family moves in and they're a perfect match for the McGee family in an uncanny way there are no bumps no rough patches you would think that these two families knew each other for years coincidentally each person in the family matches up perfectly with their implied rolled counterpart mom loves the mom dad loves a dad youngest likes the youngest all dislikes the oldest this isn't to say that I'm frothing at the mouth for another son and mom Dynamic against a Carl and Judy Neutron but it is to say that everything here matches up perfectly almost too perfectly it is not a date it's not like he's bringing me flowers I picked these sustainable local wildflowers the date because I see him holding flowers there for you to bring everyone up to speed Oliver is not perfect he is part of a ghost hunting family which is supposed to be the big aspect to worry about here's the big problem for a Twist like this Ali needs a cool character and there's four aspects that this show has failed his execution is Ali lacks a cool character to begin with Ollie isn't interesting with Molly olly has no interesting Dynamics outside of Molly and a progression with Ollie sucks one of the major issues with Ali is that outside of him being a ghost hunter there is zero development with this character this matters because everyone around him has development which makes him stick out combine that with the focus on him for season two and you're being shoved the blandus of the Bland in your face multiple times in only the first portion of this second season and there are famous examples of this kind of issue for example when it pertains the Total Drama Island trents also had this issue his entire character was Gwen's love interest anytime you've seen him on camera in a major way it was to advance Gwen as a character whether it was to advance their love story line give Gwen an easy supporting character for her plot or to be used to affect Gwen in some way Trent never had any personality of his own outside of being a damage prone guitar player take your tooth back to where you came from what but I thought I was getting along so well with everybody I guess you were wrong you can even see this with the non-major characters of Total Drama Island like Cody Noah Ezekiel or Justin characters that didn't do too much these characters all had personalities and Cody specifically had Dynamics with a few people including Gwen but Cody was still his own character a quote flirtatious tech savvy geek who sees himself as a ladies man instead of a nerd according to the wiki Noah was a know-it-all who never got physical but couldn't wait to be sarcastic Ezekiel was the homeschooled weird kid who was taught some very sexist viewpoints on life Justin was the thinnest of them all just being a pretty boy but he was shown to not be above cheating which at least gives him something in his very brief time on the island now think of Trent what did Trent do outside of Gwen that was significant nothing the difference between Trent and Ollie is that Total Drama made no qualms with the aspect that Trenton was disposable and only used to further Gwen's character Ali is treated as a big deal and a Mainstay with none of the redeeming qualities whatsoever Ali also had no interesting Dynamics which is a big big issue as a Mainstay and a focus of this second season he should be interesting as a character enough to prompt at least curiosity in seeing him around other characters given that Ollie's entire personality is that he's a ghost hunter any Dynamic with this family falls flat because their personality for the most part is just Ghost Hunter so there isn't anything interesting to explore that the writing team wouldn't already just explore if Molly's family given that they're the exact same family with the exact same Dynamics shown in a season 2 premiere not only this but when we do see Ali later on hanging out alongside scratching Libby with Indian Haunting of Brighton video he sticks out like a sore thumb and it's clear that this episode is more about him rather than how he fits with the amazing Dynamic of Molly scratch and Libby I don't feel bad that I was wrong about everything I don't feel bad about attacking innocent ghosts and I don't feel bad that I almost hurt someone you really care about or maybe I do feel bad really really bad well I understand that his progression which we'll get to later is of the path of converting into someone who hunts only the bad ghosts that doesn't change that his Dynamics with Libby and scratch were bare and I had no desire to see him interact with them Andrea or anyone else in Brighton much less Molly herself the show actual good characters with good Dynamics let me show you too Libby has a great Dynamic with Molly being pulled out of her turtle shell which helps with her slow burning story of becoming a woman this is supported in episodes such as Mazel Tov Libby as well as book marks a Sprite and a period piece within friend off we see the dynamic of scratch and Libby being that they're so close to Molly their initial interactions are quite hostile for one this brings out the confidence in Libby that isn't normally seen and it also allows for us to see scratch in the human world not always around Mali which was refreshing they ultimately learned that who's the better friend doesn't matter because Molly is a handful and most likely needs a person or two to keep her reigned in it was a sweet way to settle their beef without anyone losing their priority ever since Libby and scratch work well together even if it isn't always a regular site while not as common it should be noted that Molly met Andrea and Libby around the same time with different Dynamics between the two however it was hinted that Libyan Andrea weren't on the greatest terms in the first grade there was a girl named Libby she was bright-eyed and full of Promise until one day she called Andrea Andrea and from that moment on she was an outcast forever shunned from respectable Society what happened to her oh she's me I'm Libby and don't get too close I think I've almost got her worn down looking good Andrea although they'd interacts somewhat within hooray for mollywood I'd argue their best interaction to date is in the slightly controversial episode a period piece I say slightly controversial because they bond over having a period wow we look so she cake in our matching Belgium silk PJs didn't really get the memo that we were supposed to match oh don't worry Molly you look good comfy they form a period pact where Andrea would help Libby through this novel experience which only bothers Molly because she wants to feel included and not like she's too late for her growing friends however it was interesting to see how supportive Andrea was and how receptive to it Libby was given their implied history before Molly and speaking of Andrea Andre and Molly also started off with the Rockies Dynamic based off of Molly's pronunciation of Andrea calling her Andrea however over the course of the first season we'd see that they would just operate from different perspectives and while Andrea would be very overbearing to someone like Molly she'd ultimately learn to respect and appreciate her as a person but outside of Molly and Libby Andrea had an interesting Dynamic with their parents as shown with an adult gooder and Davenport's on demand two episodes that displayed her turbulent relationship with them the former told us that Andrea is just trying to follow in her parents's footsteps via buying a ton of nougat bars for charity but claiming that she sold them all to appear as if she was just as good of a salesperson as them Molly mostly out of jealousy nearly exposed her but upon learning about the true reason as to why she did it she covers for her I guess I'm just a boring salesman like my parents right daddy hold that hug for the cameras button we'll get more likes if it feels real [Music] I've made a horrible mistake this puts layers on their weird friendship but more importantly gave Andrea an engaging twist and a reason to want to see her around her parents more the latter episode flushed this Dynamic out by showing that she plans to go against her father's capitalistic views and be more for the community as a footnote there's also Daryl and Pete's Dynamic explored and Mama's gotta hustle Pete and his history with his older twin siblings and scratches Dynamic with Jinx when it comes to main characters having Dynamics outside of Molly I don't want to get all braggy and all but I will always find my Jewels no good we're gonna have some fun then I completely understand why the visual of Molly and Ollie do something for the super fans if we're speaking about it just from two character designs they do look nice together but their Dynamic is so thin that it makes a Hallmark card look like Casablanca what do they do outside of the ghost hunting problem which is already flawed to begin with I'll tell you what every Trope in the world the episode I want to dance with some Ollie is one of the worst episodes loads I've seen this year for this very reason for a character we've been introduced to in one episode partially saw in another to rush to a prom in a third episode seems a little quick you're not even letting the relationship flow or even showing anything to the viewer as to why they should care visually again looks cute but you can get that in anything it looking cute doesn't mean anything and it definitely doesn't legitimize it Shrek and Fiona didn't look conventionally cute with each other but the dynamic there beats this one by a country mile the visuals of them crushing on each other isn't even unique to Disney much less animated couples how many times have we seen two characters blush at each other how many times have you seen two characters who like each other get super close if anything if I were a fan of alien Molly you would imagine that you can go a lot further than the basic high school romance ideas [Applause] happening you OMG it's so cute you two need a couple name Molly plus Ollie equals Molly but that's just my name oh I get it not only this but the feel of the entire Dynamic is off because Ollie's character is written to be like Molly to a disgustingly close degree he has his own little saying of an happify he's environmentally friendly in the same way that Molly is he has largely the same interests as Molly he is as active extroverted and intuitive as Molly is as seen within I want to dance with some olive if it isn't clear to this point the only difference between the two is that one likes ghosts and the other does not it's a thin Dynamic that doesn't offer much and lags behind characters who actually do offer something tarot Libby Andrea scratcher parents Brighton these are all interesting aspects to see because they differ from Molly and bring out different sides of Molly we don't usually see the only thing Ollie provides is the visual look of being together and any actual personality clashes or fun moments together only exists to further the love storyline that's already being rushed I'm not trying to hide anything by saying there isn't anything else but there literally isn't anything else but them blatantly showing the audience how much they are alike that's why all of this feels weird because Molly does have more to offer Beyond being the shy romantic type she should be wacky she should be outspoken and she should want to spread happiness to others as like a default trait of hers even if for some odd reason you did want to tell a story where Molly becomes a different person the last thing that I would have wanted for her is to drift away from the reasons why I enjoyed her character in the first place which is what I expressed in my video about any future romantic angles despite claiming to be Molly's best friend later in the season I do want to say that I don't really care for the ship of these characters I actually enjoy that Molly for the most part has been plutonic I'd imagine for the relationship to work Andrea would either have to be watered down to be palpable for the dynamic to be there or Molly would have to go against a lot of her own morals to think that it would work with Andrea as she is now only if you look at these characters at a surface level and aesthetically would it even look like a good ship and given that animation is a lot more it in just a look I don't ship it you just heard my fear when it came to Molly getting in a relationship with Andrea I feared it because either Molly would have to change to fit in with Andrea better or Andrea would have to not be so obnoxious and I didn't like that either to me Molly works the greatest here because her platonic Spirit fit in line within happifying Brighton she cared about everyone equally and wanted her forever home to be in a town that wasn't miserable while one can argue that this was achieved at the end of the first season she wasn't entirely directionalist in the second season to have to rush a relationship the way they're attempting to it only made Molly come off as weird especially pushing people like scratch away as she attempted to battle her thoughts about Ollie in scratch If Molly is truly about and happifying Brighton there's only one possible scenario here to get the Chen family to not be so hostile towards ghosts however this isn't the view expressed in a new paranormal or I want to dance with some Ali which he seems almost dismissive of scratch's concerns putting her own infatuation of of Ali ahead of scratch's well-being one may wave this off as young love the issue is that seeing Molly this selfish over someone she just met versus someone she literally had to fight for the freedom for comes across as jarring in a brute force of a worse relationship triangle then scratch Libby and Molly which not only made sense but actually had a satisfying conclusion because Molly is already an impulsive and slightly stubborn person as we've seen in season one those are her flaws her impulsiveness now comes across as gross and it makes her character weaker it's not that Molly should stay platonic or that Molly in a relationship weakens her character but more so that as picky as Molly was for her best friend as we've seen in the first season and as persistent as she was in converting scratch into a joy spreading ghost to see all of that thrown away for the boy next door is disheartening Bali we have talked about the booping of my Snoop yeah but your Snoop so cute it's just gotta be booped I really can't get over how squishy he is all right all right she does it it's cool when you do it it's weird Ali also had a very bad progression anyone who had eyes and ears can see what would happen with Ali a mile away they're building up the Love Story Ali is a ghost hunter of course he's going to turn around and no longer hate ghost the way that he does this isn't me saying that I would need that to be different in any way whatsoever they can play it straightforward but the progression from A to B is boring because they don't even try anything new or make Ollie that interesting of a character meaning that the progression doesn't have any weight because we don't care about the person who's progressing getting back over to other Disney shows it is a shame that they didn't study this from other Disney shows because a lot of those shows do have romantic angles that people do like so let's go over one oh Willow you don't have anything to show do you with drama yes Amity blight was a better character than Oliver and I'm perfectly okay using the first five episodes that she was significantly in to explain my point so this would be I was a teenage Abomination which was her first episode convention lost in language adventures and the elements and understanding Willow these five episodes give Amity a great introduction with the great personality and a decently good Dynamic with Luz but also incredible Dynamics with other characters for example Amity had a great introduction we learned about Amity seeing her interact with Willow showing her to be a stuck up student outside of the heck Side School of magic this paints her out to be snooty mean crass arrogant and gives lose the main character a reason to not like her but the sympathize with willowmore amity's day is turned for worse when Luz sneaks into the school and makes her look bad by giving Willow an impressive presentation for her Abomination Amity smelling that something is up confronts Willow about this finding out about lose and lose barely games giving Willow a chance to show that she's actually amazing with plant-based magic rather than creating Abominations principal bump was so impressed by my plant work he's switching me to the plant magic track look foreign this one episode tells us a lot about enmity that she's not on good terms with Willow that she doesn't really care too much about lose that she's actually a skilled student she's comfortable being the top student she cares about Association she's vengeful probably even Petty and so much more Amity is also a better character than Oliver we get small Peaks into amity's character like the fact that she appears to be stuck up especially around her school peers she does take time to do generous things such as reading to the children of the boiling Isles within lost in language showing that she's not just a mean girl Trope within understanding Willow we see that the memories are placed into photos that you can jump in and see and Amity shows herself to be remorseful and afraid of her past by attempting to burn the photos of herself and Willow rather than speak about them Amity had a better Dynamic with Luz compared to Oliver's Dynamic with Molly like scratch to Molly Amity did not like lose at first she felt that all lose did was mess things up for her even though all lose once is to be a witch and go to magic school just like her how however In fairness lose did do a lot of that within their first episode had she not been there Amity would have had the best project within convention had she not been there Amity would have put on an impressive performance for the emperor's coven the highest ranked coven that she's proudly a member of within adventures in the elements had she not been there amity's training one would have never been stolen by lose angering the Slither Beast that ends up capturing multiple people within that episode Amity has a point in not liking lose but at the same time the show presents the idea that Luz is just trying her best and doesn't intend to cause as much harm as she's done although later episodes would mend this awkward tension you at least have some significant and detailed moments between the two that aren't the exact same moment however she's ultimately a forgiving person with lose as we've seen in the latter episodes of the bunch like convention or understanding Willow where she shows remorse for her past actions or has empathy towards lose and the way that she operates this isn't even getting into the several times that lose and Amity get physically close or Lush or how to even read the same book and remember this is only one of the few things that they share in common because they're very different or even how they fight at convention which was one-sided and fueled more off of The Sibling Rivalry of their respective teachers you lost you cheated say it say you're not a witch I'm not a witch [Applause] but I'm training hard to be one and lastly of course Amity has better Dynamics with characters that aren't loose and the way that Oliver does not have any Dynamics at all with characters that aren't Molly we learned that she actually had an interesting pass with Willow in fact they were best friends at one point but her parents forced her to distance herself because Willow was showing signs that she was learning magic slower than the rest of the class which created anger and Willow but also regret and Amity as this wasn't her choice this legitimizes Willow's character and makes her even more of a relatable character this creates Intrigue and wanting to see Willow and Amity make amends given how close they would become with Luz this also gives amity's meaner personality more layers so that she's not thin as a character we also learned that her siblings are overwhelming within Lawson language her siblings are overbearing there which explains why Amity feels so embarrassed being around them they take advantage of loses obliviousness towards the situation and overall niceness is served as a way of taking further Jabs at Amity it is largely handled in a way where it comes off more as sibling Mischief than any actual form of of malice but Amity does take it to heart that loose lets that happen especially within adventures in the element where she explains that she thought that loose would be different and not act like a younger version of her older brother and sister this makes amity's older siblings a unique Dynamic for Amity and lose this opens the door of wanting to see what amity's family Dynamic looks like which also creates even more Intrigue and provides an opportunity to see Amity outside of school which gives her even more opportunities for other fun stories down the line mind you because of this limitation this isn't even getting into enchanting Grom fight or winging it like witches which are also Amity Centric episodes but they aren't in the first five major appearances of her however it is clear to see that Amity was a character that was worked on for a while she was not haphazardly thrown in as loses love interest and that's it that's what makes her interesting as a character and also provides the audience with reasons to care about seeing their relationship Bloom throughout the series I don't know where we go from here because the season's already done not only is the season done but the first Eight Episodes have already rushed through Ollie's point in showing up within the first episode he hates ghosts but likes Molly his third episode has him going on a date with Molly his fourth episode has him coming around to liking ghosts and scratch which means outside of the big kiss there's really nothing more that the team has built up or hinted for Ali himself there's Ali's family who still believes in ghosts but that has less to do with Ali himself or developing him as a character even if these next episodes proved to be great it already changed the fundamental base of Molly McGee and turned this from one of my favorite shows to ever watch on Disney to one of my least favorite seasons of all time thank you for watching
