g'day guys how is in this episode i'm going to run through like a cape trip wrap up cover off the gear how it performed and we'll also sit down and tell you our costings so how much it cost us for our 29 days up the cape it wasn't cheap but i tell you it's buddy well worth it so all right i'm gonna do a walk around the car in the van and show you and talk to you about how things performed and what didn't perform which um that won't be a long segment because everything was bloody schmick so starting with the car let's go we have had absolutely zero issues or actually it's a lie we are getting a little bit of dust in the 200 series which apparently isn't uncommon this is inside the cab um since this trip we've had heaps of you guys tell us run your aircon on fresh air instead of re-circuiting the 200 it stops the dust coming in so i wish i would have known that a month ago but anyway we've got a little bit of dust in through the air corn and stuff which i've always run on recirc in the old car and the mazda never had any dust so excuse me must be a different sort of setup so there's a hot tip for you stop dust getting in run it on fresh air in the 200. everything fitted to the vehicle has been fantastic mate we have had not one thing come loose rattle vibrate fall off anything like that which is for us to be expected um we built this car to handle these sort of tracks and i'll tell you what it's done a fantastic job so let's swing through a big one a lot of people ask about tyres and i've seen a lot of people doing cape trips they always end up with flat tyres as i said in the first video the cape series um never had a flat with coopers and still going mate over 2000 k's are rough dirt and corrugations tyres are performed awesome mate no flats no nothing now we're good to go you know good mileage good traction and they're comfortable so we ended up running 25 psi all round except the rear drive tyres on the cruiser they were at 30 just because you've got the tow ball weight and you see when you put the van on you get a bit extra sidewall so an extra five psi and then level them out with the rest and that was enough to be super comfortable and you know what if you've been up the coat or you haven't been you run into a lot of sections of bitumen along the way so you don't want to be down too low and then all of a sudden you're doing a 30 or 40 kilometer stretch of bitumen with only 20 psi on your tyres or whatever you know what i mean try and find that happy medium so that worked well for us um before we went to the cape we got the new base rack fitted this is arb's new la like um roof rack platform so it was its first big trip for this as well absolutely outstanding nothing vibrated loose nothing come off there's no wind noise a big thing when i first posted about getting it fitted people were worried about wind noise absolutely nothing but i mean look at this if i was worried about wind noise hey i've got a tinny i've got a roof thing i've got everything hanging off the top so i'm definitely not worried about wind noise but that didn't make any difference so there you go if you're looking at them don't worry about the wind noise that wind deflector does a good job the tinney on top right this is a it's our first big shakedown trip for pretty much the whole setup and i wasn't sure how my tinny would go the way i've tied it down a lot of people use straps over the top um i don't like that idea because i reckon for me throwing the hook over in that i'm going to end up either dinging the tinny or dinging me canopy um plus they look pretty ugly as well so i've got in the corner here i'll just grab the camera i've got you'll see that turnbuckles so there's a turnbuckle in either corner and um i use them and i put it on and i crank them down they have not come loose the tinny is still on the roof and there's also where the bridle hooks up for the boat loader to pull it up the winch is still attached so it's like an extra safety as well so i've got four anchor points holding it down um no noise no rattling no vibration so i'm stoked with the way that's set up same with the whole boat loader set up on the roof there's um nothing to worry about you know you just fang down dirt roads you shake the crap out everything you get there and it's all still on the roof so i'm bloody stoked um dust wise in the canopy i showed you in the first episode about how we adjust the locks and put it in there have a look at that mate hey absolutely killer no dust whatsoever in there all my electrical and camera gear and stuff and the outboard stays dust free and secure locked away in the canopy so ah mate i could rave on about norweld's all day they are the bee's knees but you know your gear is going to be dry and safe and dust free on any trip you want to tackle so one thing i will tell you about see how bloody shiny this car is it's pretty nice isn't it so i um i can't take credit for that but there's a young fella in cairns who runs a detailing called i'll give him a plug it's called rtr detailing his name's ash he's a young fella and he does a lot of work for norwell doing all their show cars and canopies so i got him to do mine he does a full interior and exterior clean um 350 to 400 bucks depending on the size of your car obviously mom is 400 because it's massive but mate i hate cleaning cars especially when they're that filthy after the cape so yeah get onto him and he'll even come to your site in a caravan park to do it if you want all right um the rest of the conversion on the car like the dual cab conversion and the whole process mate faultless you know i won't go into the ins and outs of everything just an absolutely faultless build nothing to worry about and i'm pumped it was bloody good i reckon now this is what we've had heaps of questions about let's kick off from the tow bar back far out mate this thing is probably the best money you'll spend if you're going to do any dirt road driving with a caravan on you know this is called a stone stomper i will do another little vid later on about how to hook it up and how we fitted it and how we ordered it and stuff but a bit of quick info 750 bucks give them the dimensions and they post it out to you and it's in a half an hour to fit it up but honestly mate that has stopped so much like we've had a lot of vans a lot of different things honestly on dirt roads when you're doing 80 to 100k an hour these things do squat all right there's so many rocks and everything else that skip up over the top you end up with rocks on your roof they can crack your solar panels they ding the crap out of the front of your van they chip all your paint work on your stone on your checker plate so mate this is great it's easy it's a 30 second hookup when you hitch up the van and it just pumps everything and the biggest thing is it keeps all the dust down mate so we've got i'll talk about it soon we've got no dust in our caravan i've got a few things to stop that but i reckon this is a big helper so stone stomper i'll put their info there too check it out we've tried everything we've had rock tamers we've had homemade things we've had these um mate yep rate it absolutely rate it uh the van itself same again first really big shakedown trip 2000 k's are corrugations and you hear a lot of horror stories hey about caravans up cape york about how they shake to bits and your drawers fall apart and microwaves fall out and shower screens fall off if you're a caravan you would have heard all these so you get in you get it in your head you're like oh man what's going to happen to our van so every time we hit some really rough sections of the pdr i was sort of peeking out a little bit i sort of i know how well it rides but at the same time i'm thinking jesus is pretty rough how's this van going back there but mate faultless again no dust nothing rattled loose nothing broke nothing damaged like absolutely killer to be able to pull up after a huge day on the tracks shaking the hell out everything and just walk into your home and it's clean and there's nothing to fix mate i'm stoked and you know i will give you oreck and the biggest reason for that we've had all sorts of like suspension over the years the atx the airbag stuff made legit if you're going to do tracks like the cape the gibb river road and you're building a new van i think you'd be mad not to put the airbags under it because it is super smooth mate and it ah not only does it allow you to level your van up when you get somewhere it's super easy but you don't have to worry about it it just it rides so good i actually put a gopro underneath i'll show you some footage now and that's how rough it is and then you get in the van and there's nothing out of place so it tells you how good of a job it does keep coming um i showed you same again in episode one about how i adjusted all the locks and that if you have a look in there quick no dust mate so these compression seals sit inside the rim here and they absolutely get pumped with dust you can see it all around the outside here but nothing gets inside so again it's worth taking the time to go around adjust all your locks and make sure they're tight for when you hit the tracks we did um clean the van finally only just yesterday we dropped through there's a big boy super wash in townsville and i spent 40 bucks there about half an hour just guaranteeing it it's still filthy but most of it is off look at that it's still pretty red dirt everywhere all right swing down here tyres again on the van absolutely killer i tell you i do want to talk about disc brakes same again if you're building a new van definitely look at disc brakes not only are they great for performance wise and they feel a lot nicer when you're driving and the brake application they're sort of a lot smoother when you're doing a lot of dusty roads there's nothing to fill up if you've got drum brakes they fill up with dust they squeal they squawk they lock up the magnets wear out um then you've got to pull them apart clean them blow them out there honestly i've been there done that if you're building a new van disc brakes absolutely killer these are our roof fridge hatches right same again that's got no dust inside it's only on the rim so that stops a lot going in so instead of having the two normal vents like one there one there you just run two hatches with compression seals and a whirly bird on the top um let's go what else underneath um we did really well mate we actually i think the stone stopper helps a lot as well but we've got no damage there's some obviously there's some stone chips in that on the front of the suspension and the underbody just getting peppered with little stones but everything else all our pipe work and you can see under here where i've done my pool party with all the pool noodles and that you can see that they get fairly peppered with rocks and so the big poly water tanks but that's why they're built to do that those roto mold tanks they can cop a bit of a hit and you don't have to run an extra like galvanized shield around them so um right oh let's go around the back rear bar trailer spare bikes well we ditched the bikes i don't think there's any point taking the bikes up the cape so we left them in cairns if you have that option i think it's a good idea and that one less extra thing to stop shaking around in the back so we picked them up um and then the trailer and the rear bar i probably could have left the trailer in cairns too because i didn't use it up the cape we just ended up dropping it on the beach so close you just drag it in the water but again the mounting system from almac is absolutely killer it's still there and nothing's falling off and nothing's shaking loose and it's rock solid mate so stoked with that hey sorry quick one a lot of people been asking how you mount that cargo gear bag oh yeah um quickly on the cargo gear bag if you've ever bought one you know they're probably a little bit tricky to fit yes they are the instructions are a bit vague but i'll have to get i'm going to get another one to put on the ute so when i do get it i'll give you a quick sort of info video on how to fit a quick shoot might not be so quick because they're a bit tricky but once you get it right you never have to touch it again so but they're a good thing too always full of rubbish full of dirty gear whatever if you've got two of them one on your car one of your ute it's killer mate especially for free camping around this side of the van boss same again mate hatches doors seals everything's schmiko awning absolutely killer we hardly ever used it up the cape because you sort of i don't know we're just a lot of overnighters plus we had um shade plus we pulled up at the at um yeah shade at punson bay and we pulled up at a little hut at ally so we never used it but it's sweet as if you haven't got one in the middle here um make sure you get a mid awning mount it just stops because you've got so such a long barrel they get a bit of a wobble up on corrugation so make sure you get a mid awning mount for that um toilet hatch airbag hatch everything you know same as they're all the same seals so they're killer we didn't clean it and clean our table no i didn't clean the table because i didn't have the keys to put it down look at this this is how much dust gets in everywhere so luckily um none of that gets inside i'm pretty stoked for that but we'll have to even with the gurney look how filthy it stays look at that anyway there you go um that's a bit of a rundown yeah so like i said a couple of favorite products to keep the outside outside are these two men so you know how painful it is when you're on dirt and sand especially at the cape you've got like black sand and red dirt this is all red because i um i stored it on the front of my drawer bar when we drove back down so we've got a thousand k's worth of red dirt pumped onto it and um then i garnered it yesterday i didn't quite clean it all while i was sitting there but this here it's a c gear mat a multi-matte now i'll drop the discount code in that in here you can get them from a247 same places we've got like our tool roll first aid kits fire pits heaps of that stuff they sell these and you can get a really good discount on them so um the other thing is this one you've seen us use this before this is the the muck mat get them in all different sizes but mate it keeps me happy because it keeps back happy all right all the dirt and snot and mud and grass stays out here and you're not dragging it all through your beds and inside your van so yeah there you go let's roll up the front babe let's see if we can think of anything else that i've forgotten kids are fighting with sticks i think that's it all right can you think of anything else babe the inside of the fan oh yeah inside so we'll run through the inside in a minute i'll just give you a quick look um jack's doing school at the moment so let him finish that but i'll just show you inside the fan and well there's nothing really to show i'll just show you that there's no damage and nothing moved and a few things in the shower and that we use that are absolutely awesome so anyway to wrap it up mate if uh uh love it mate could not be happier with how this has performed and the confidence it's given us to go and smash down any rough dirt track around the country and know that we're going to pull up there dust free damage free yeah to be honest we thought we would not get this whole trip done unscathed we thought we'd have to have some sort of damage because it is rough mate you when you're driving it you're like man some of this you hit some big dust holes and warps in the vans bouncing everywhere and everything's going crazy you think you're going to end up with some sort of damage nothing mate absolutely nothing so all i can say is if you want to travel you know do trips like this the gib the cape every other rough dirt road around the country you want to drag it down um you don't have to have a big cruise like this but definitely look into some of the setup that we've used and try and implicate it in your own build because it honestly it just makes your trip better it makes your life easier and those two things make your trip more enjoyable don't worry about that all right happy days we'll get inside oh one tip one tip i reckon it's a good one good safety one if you're tying a van up the coat on dirt roads i reckon don't go over 85 k's an hour all right that's just from what i i tried to sneak up over that a few times and you get caught out you hit you run into a bit of a dip that you can't see or a dust hole and it just gets a bit out of shape um if you're doing 100 or 110 like a lot of people i think you've got a fair chance that of coming unstuck and you don't want to do that it'll ruin your holiday plus it's more dangerous for everyone else stick to 85 there's plenty of campsites and don't be in a rush i'll take you inside a minute all right hey we've had heaps questions after the cape trip i mentioned that we fit an aftermarket air box to the 200 because they have dusting issues so i'll show you the filters and how you change them so it's a aaa fab airbox i'll drop the link in the description of this vid so you can go and check it out yourself it's the same mob that did our exhaust as well they're in makai um here's the standard 200 series air filter so that's the one that came in it from factory so you still retain that you can use the same factory air filter here's a new one so that's that dirty side there's the clean side um and this one's a nice new one now all you have to do is lift the lid come over here back drop the new filter in give it a bit of a tap to seal in there and then all you do is put the air box lid back down on top and around the outside here so you've got like two bolts on either side drop a bolt in talk them up and then that way you've got positive pressure down on the seal and you're not going to get any dust in there happy days i'll give you a quick look at what it does so if you look in the air box there's the dirty side from where the snorkel comes in and flip you up this way to the top side that goes to the engine and look how clean it is it's like not a whisper dust in there so that's the whole idea if you look in a factory 200 air box it will not be that clean trust me all right i've got a hot tip for you i'm going to show you something that you might come across in your van um if your water pressure stops working so not on water pump only when you're connected to mains like when you've got your hose plugged in but underneath your van somewhere you'll have something that looks like this and a couple of weeks ago i was just started well bec was like in the shower going have you got what's going on with the water and anyway i just water pressure's down and i went looking and i found this one this is on ours it's right at the entry so our hose plugs into here um and that's when we're plugged into main straight on there in a lot of vans you'll have a connect connector on either end and a hose it'll be sort of in line somewhere but you'll find that and they're just called the pressure limiting valve and all it does is limit the amount of pressure going into your van to stop your hoses and that blowing off so it's sort of going to help not flood your van out by popping hoses and that but this one's knackered i've found one right you can only get them at bunnings but bunnings uh it was about 80 bucks um and i found one somewhere else now i'm gonna swear at you now i found it at the jayco store in cairns um but they sell one it's a 350 kpa right there pressure limiting valve and it was 48 bucks so there you go all you do is throw a click connect on one end and then a sort of adapter on the other end for hours and then our garden connector goes on here make sure you use lots of thread tape so they don't leak um make sure you get the pressure right too so 350 kpa they come in all sorts of pressures like 500 750 000 make sure you keep it down because that's there for a reason to stop your hoses blow it off uh come around here and i'll show you where it's plugged into our bed so this is where ours goes um i'm gonna have to get a different saddle because the old one was a bit fatter but all you do is this is your quick connect you just get your water hose you feed it into the quick connect and push it all the way through until it stops give it a bit of a yank to check it there you go that's it just plug him back in happy days i think you'll be able to wash your hair do you hey yelling at me in the shower i didn't mind coming to help man all righty so come inside and i'll give you a quick rundown about how the inside went up the cape it's going to be very quick because the actual inside of the van is legit mate it was spotless it was faultless it was killer uppercase we cannot believe it um we pinch ourselves every day that we got through what we did up the cape without any dust or damage so um i'll just run through a few quick things we use inside that well honestly they have to help because we've never had this before and we've always got dust in our vans no matter what we do uh taping up vents and stuff so this one here uh the caravan sahara it's a dust fan like to reiterate it's 120 something liters a second in pushes all those any little gaps you got in your van it's going to push out all right um don't mind the kids they're lazing around we're having a rainy day in here today it's um it's pretty miserable actually we've made it all the way down to victoria between the last time i did the outside bit of a run down on the inside and then i realized i hadn't bloody done and i went dead at the video i'm like i never did the inside um so one hot tip i'm gonna give you if you have this dometic fridge um have a look in here see what i do under here uh these couple of screws i put in they have a habit of this little trim coming off on rough roads and then when you open your fridge like this or your freezer the front surround will fall out and hitch on the feet that's happened a few times and i'll do it to this bottom one down here too easy job just a couple of self tappers in there and no dramas uh and the microwave dish mate this one here is a good one i've got some bacon in there at the moment if you just pull your microwave dish out and shove it usually there's in behind the books there there you go shove that down in one of the magazine pouches so it doesn't bounce around and cause any damage on the inside i'll leave that there um everything kitchen-wise sweet everyone always asks us what do we put in our drawers um well for our cutlery one we just have a like a sort of um cutlery sort of drawer with all the little sections in it that comes with the van and we don't use anything else you can see down here we've got a bit of like all the cups have been rubbing around on the bottom on the rough roads but i don't see any point in putting anything underneath it they end up like those sheets of sort of foam you can put in all that stuff that's supposed to stop things moving around they always just end up getting balled up anyway you know same sample we just leave everything in there we don't have anything that's breakable we use all bamboo sort of plates and that sort of thing so nothing can actually break there's no glass absolutely no glass in our caravan the only thing that could probably break is big suit cut which is this thing here so um and that's about it i reckon in the shower if you're looking for something um this in here these fusion lock things they have we haven't touched them mate since we put them on and they do not fall off so if you're looking for something good if you don't have enough storage in your kitchen or your shower we got them from bunnings so you can grab that as well dust free damage free absolute killer mate so um i'll grab this hey jack can you hold this for me yeah say good day hello hey we're gonna talk about the budget right so for our cape trip it was 29 days we spent um just under four and a half grand right and that that's including everything all our fuel groceries um grog camping fees um stuff we bought along the way fishing tackle barge fees you know what i mean absolutely everything four and a half grand so it still works out we always say it's about a thousand bucks a week to travel it's a little bit more obviously because you're remote and the groceries are more expensive and you've got to pay for a few extra things but four and a half grand but how i do it i won't show you too close but all i do is get on me banking right and um i export a statement so all i did was put in from 1st of october to the 29th of october all my debits hit go and it spits out a form for you so rather than keeping all your receipts and fluffing around like that just wait till you're done spit it out it tells you there it's itemized what's bloody what fuel what's coffee uh car washing cans that you know what i mean everything is itemized so you can go through and do your budget at the end and figure out how much fuel food accommodation all that that you're actually spending but there you go i hope that gives you a good insight into our cape trip how everything performed and that might help you out with a few things you want to do on your own caravan before you tackle cape york because i tell you if you're not prepared you will regret it anyway um comments questions feedback drop it down below thanks for following the cape series it's been an absolute perler four episodes of some of the best adventuring we've done if you haven't seen them i'll put them at the end of this video you can go back through and check them out but thanks guys we appreciate it you're an awesome audience you
