the year is 2013. you just got out of school and you're going home to play Call of Duty Black Ops 2 with your friends later that night you and your family are going to see Man of Steel in theaters when you realize your old beat up HTC Thunderbolt is on its last legs you want to ask your parents to get you a new phone but you got to do some research first so you open up YouTube and check out some phone reviews and what do you see well at this point there are some unboxings up on YouTube there's some webcam footage of people who bought the phone last week using their crappy webcam mics and then well then there's MKBHD marquez's review of the Google edition HTC one came out exactly 10 years ago as of writing the script and minute for minute pixel 4 pixel this video still looks and sounds and watches better than a majority of the content on YouTube in 2023 and by the way this was not some sort of special one-off video for MKBHD either in fact this random 2013 Android phone review isn't a standout in marquez's Channel at all this is just what he does what he's been doing for well over a decade here on YouTube his absolute obsession with quality more importantly his consistency with quality changed the landscape of online media MKBHD ruined Tech videos just like any YouTuber of that time especially from from well what I'm going to go ahead and call hour or my generation you know the ones that started off with uh this layout Marquez started off using his YouTube channel in a way that really encapsulates what YouTube started off as which was simply a website that offered free internet video hosting which by the way guys and I might sound like an old man here uh was kind of a big deal at the time I started when things like rever and Metacafe and Google video were around yeah like before Google bought YouTube when I started I used to record on those tiny little DVD discs you know these things and then I would rip those DVDs onto my Dell PC you remember the one and then I would wait eight hours and then try to convert and edit those videos in Windows Movie Maker and then with enough thoughts and prayers maybe the video ended up getting uploaded to the internet back then online video was so foreign and YouTube took it to a whole new level marquez's first handful of videos were just the regular normal things that a 13 year old kid would upload like golf swings or fraps testing oh man The Glory Days of fraps okay great this is making me feel super old awesome pretty quickly though Marquez found a rhythm of uploading what would end up being some of the stylistically most nostalgic YouTube videos without even knowing it you guessed it tutorials complete with Cam Studio desktop capture and everything funny enough I found a tutorial from Marquez about a program called CCleaner from back in the day here's that CCleaner first I will show you where to get it open your internet browser the first result will be ccleaner.com yeah well I also found mine from around the same time CCleaner is a completely free program that allows you to manually maintain your PC uh again completely free and it's easy to do yep just kill me mkbhd's YouTube channel is a perfect little time capsule of early YouTube early Tech and really what makes his success as a Creator so obvious I mean even as a kid Marquez was nothing but consistent guys I don't even think I was doing my homework as often as Marquez was doing homework and uploading videos in his first year on YouTube after starting his tutorials he uploaded 283 videos that is nuts that's insane for the early days of YouTube it was super clear that Marquez mkb HD just had a passion for making things and oh man did he make some good video after video with straight to the point unboxings and product reviews and a video quality most couldn't achieve in that era of YouTube at all I mean most struggle achieving that now if you were into Tech if you cared even a little bit you were an MKBHD subscriber even back in those early days something that I find really exciting about marquez's channel in the beginning is being able to see his production skills and quality jump video after video I mean look at this he uploaded this unboxing of a Canon Rebel t2y and next thing you know next video bam classic MKBHD video stylings right here all the way back in 2010 13 years ago I mean I I don't even want to show you what I was putting online around that time we don't we don't talk about that oh okay guess we're doing it all right everything in marquez's videos from the pan shots and the zooms and even his shot compositions overall they were just completely on another level every single thing was meticulous and thought out had a purpose he cared and new camera after new camera new mic after new mic Marquez really mastered his flow and mastered his craft to now over a decade later still I don't I don't think anyone touches his stuff well you know except for everyone who's copying him uh yep we are at that part of the video here we go I mean listen anyone can go buy a dolly and a tripod and some nice lenses and Bam quality right but like is it really the same in fact this for the most part at least in my opinion feels like it has become the default in the tech space almost as if everyone assumes that they need to have this stuff by default most tech creators make videos in pretty much the same way the way they watched Marquez make them don't get me wrong this is a video about Marquez I did not make this as a way to shame anyone really and I'm certainly not about to sit here and on any smaller YouTubers that are just doing what they see right that are trying to emulate the style and methods of one of obviously the most successful creators on the platform everyone emulates success but everyone is also missing one key thing and that's the passion the care for the craft that Marquez has doing it for the art of it if you are one of the people sitting there right now wanting to start a YouTube channel but like you're waiting if you're waiting because do you think you have to you're waiting to buy that really cool camera or buy that really cool microphone you want your first video to be uploaded and look like a Marquez video if you're waiting for that don't these are incredible literally all of the things that I used to have to do when I started the recording to a DVD and then having to rip the files from said DVD and then convert those files so that I could finally edit them in Windows Movie Maker of all things and then hope that it renders within two days so I can upload that to some weird internet website all of those steps can be done from this one single device it does all of it and we take all of that for granted if you really want to be like Marquez start like Marquez start like the rest of us did baby steps just do the thing first experience truly is the best teacher you don't need to have everything know everything to start today it is almost impossible to search YouTube for a product review and not see a little bit of either MKBHD himself or MKBHD influence in almost all of the videos even from some of your favorite other creators again not trying to mention any names here I'm not going to mention any names here but a lot of the people that you watch currently just the dollar store ripoff of Marquez I would argue that he turned product reviews and unboxings and first impressions into well actual digestible watchable content you don't just pull up an MKBHD video when you feel like watching some random guys thoughts on whatever smartphone thingy or laptop and now you probably don't even watch his videos for the product half the time you tune in for him you don't care about what everyone else says about the product you care about what Marquez says about the product his voice matters here and I think that's what separates him from a lot of others just like other lifelong creators who embed their passion for the medium deep deep in every single shot and video Marquez makes content now not just reviews not just unboxings held not even just first impressions of new cars over on autofocus or episodes of his waveform podcast MKBHD makes true genuine content because he loves it and that's why we all watch he took the formula of the product review unboxing First Impressions and turned each and every video into a way to hone his craft and now I mean the guy puts out so much content it'll make you die I don't know that's not what the script says I don't know why I said die but here we are sure you can still get your expected smartphone Impressions and reviews from him but now he's doing so much more just take a look at the studio where Marquez and his lovely crew who I've heard tend to enjoy some fpt videos here and there Branch out into Vlogs challenges or even just a nice casual behind the scenes where you can really see just how much work goes into the labor of love that is a single MKBHD video Marquez absolutely unequivocally went straight through the heart of early YouTube and ruined Tech videos forever but you know what we wouldn't have it any other way [Music]
