hey what's going on YouTube family and friends this is bear brown thanks for coming to my garden Channel today while I'm here helping you grow something tasty all right in today's video I get this question all the time so I decided to make a video about it and the question is how many watermelons to grow per plant is the question now first of all I'm so excited because this is my day off I got a several days off so I'm gonna be working in the garden I'm so happy about that whoa all right now back to the uh topic now before I get into that topic I hope you stick around the video is not gonna last that long because I have a secret that I'ma try for the very first time it's already behind me I'm sitting beside my watermelons and I want you to see it and it's gonna hopefully help me fight off pests that are going to try to attack my watermelons I want you to see this all right so when deciding how to how many uh watermelons to leave on my plant is I think about this how many watermelons do I want do I want a lot of watermelon so if you want a lot of watermelons and you're not worried about the size then I would leave one watermelon per Vine so if I have five watermelon Vines then I will have one watermelon per Vine so that would give that plant would give me five watermelons now that plant could give you several more watermelons but I do want to have some size to my watermelons now the energy that it takes to produce a big melon you're not going to get a huge melon when you got five melons growing unless you pump it hard with uh fertilizer we'll get into that a little later alright so if this is a decent enough size or you want them a little bit bigger chances are I'll just stick with one melon per Vine because after I go and leave like three melons on a vine and I got another three melons on the vine your watermelons are gonna be smaller than this so just make sure you are aware of that because it takes a lot of energy to get one of these big giant watermelons and having more than one melon on a vine that is gonna be too much for that plant to produce like a giant melon you're gonna have little knobs on there all right now if you want larger melons say for example uh you want a little bit larger melon then chances are what I do is I go down to only two melons per plant so I will pick a Vine and and I will pick the uh the melons off once I get my two vines that I want one melon from that vine one from that one and then you can come back out and car start clipping The Vines but if you notice in one of my videos I clipped the end of it to make sure that there are no more melons because I did away with the rest of that vine but you also want to make sure that you leave enough uh leaves for photosynthesis so that it can get energy toward that uh melon so that's what I do and you also need to think about that if you only have like maybe three watermelon plants then chances are you probably want to have a lot more melons so you may wanted to stick with what I said first having one uh watermelon per plant so I have a lot of watermelon plants so I'm able to do a variety of uh things so I can have two on this one two on that one and if I want this have a lot of melons dab do the first thing so it's good for me to have a lot of uh plants so I can pick and choose now if you want to grow melons you need this third category you want to grow melons that are ginormous like you're trying to win a competition at the state fair then you will go down to only having one melon per plant so that's the difference so I'm never like that I never uh not not knocking it but maybe one day I may decide to do that maybe this year just depends but the reason why I don't like to have just one melon on a plant I know it's Gonna Get huge but if something happens to that watermelon then I'm out of a watermelon for that plant so those are some of the things that you need to consider now if you were thinking on the lines of like these big time Farmers where they have fields and Fields of uh watermelons now you know when they do that they don't go in and clip the melons because we're backyard gardeners so backyard Growers so they have to use the drip tape for fertilizer now if you're pumping all that fertilizer like the big time farmers are making sure that they get decent sized melons and get loads of melons then you don't have to uh worry about the first two things that I said but I don't pump fertilizer like that I don't know what their schedule is how how much fertilizer they're pumping through those uh drip tapes but I know it's a lot to produce melons so if you're doing that then like I said you on your way to getting some nice melons and you don't have to really worry about cutting back but I want you to think about when you're pruning your fruit trees it's the same it's the same thing so if I leave all that fruit on my fruit trees the fruit is going to be a lot smaller because all that energy that it is trying to produce to make the fruit so that's why I would say scale back a little bit and but at the end of the day the uh the number of melons it is on the backyard grower the Backyard Farmer now I hope that answered your question that I'm getting in the comments now I want to show you my uh watermelon over here and it's one of the uh the Watermelons that get to be a hundred something pounds not saying I'ma get that but let's see how I'm trying to stop the uh the pest it should be interesting all right now here is the Carolina cross melon plant now this melon can get to be over 100 pounds but I want you to look in close look what I have at the base of it I have my little bottle of green onions growing on the side so that green onion smell I'm hoping is going to uh throw the pests off like the squash bug this is the first time that I've tried it so hopefully that is going to keep the pests off of my watermelon plant so far so good I don't see any uh pest pressure or anything like that but I want to see how that works throughout the growing season all right now that was just my little trick but for the Watermelons I hope that uh help you decide how many uh melons that you're going to use per plant and if you look up here if this is your first time I'm going to put the uh the video that started a lot of those questions how to take care of your uh watermelon plants throughout the growing season and if you look to see what I did in that video I clipped the vines and that's how I get this question a lot but if you're new to the channel if it's your first time if you win go look at that video and then you'll see why I get this question all the time until next time I'll see you later and remember to grow something tasty bye
