Kobe Bryant went from being one of the worst basketball players as a kid to becoming one of the greatest basketball players ever so how did he do it and how can you use his proven Mamba mentality to achieve your own greatness find out next welcome back to the channel shakers Derrick van shake here Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest basketball players ever but as a kid he admittedly was terrible at it it was only until he started to develop what became known as his Mamba mentality the Black Mamba that he started to improve drastically Kobe's mindset was on another level that's the play which led to his greatness both on and off the basketball court he was living proof that our mindset could either make us or break us what's so inspiring about Kobe's Mamba mentality is that you can use it to in your own life to achieve great things or just live an overall healthier happier life so we're gonna break down Kobe's famous Mamba mentality to finally reveal to you specifically how it worked for Kobe Bryant and how it can work for you in your life to achieve your own greatness now let's get started my parents we're great you know growing up they instilled in me the importance of imagination of curiosity understanding that okay if you want to accomplish something I'm not just gonna sit here and say yes you can do whatever you want yes you can but you have to also put in the work to get there many parents fall into one of two camps you have the naysaying parents and the cheerleading parents here's a simple example a child says I want to be President of the United States you president you can't even read a book all the way through and then on the other side of the spectrum we have parents who jump for joy saying and then maybe even bragging to the neighbor saying that their child will be President feeling like they've won up the neighbor's kid who wants to be a firefighter what kopi is describing is the better approach because it's validating commending and encouraging the work that is required to do the task and not because he can do whatever he wanted because he was just born more special well if you put in the work to do it you grew up having that fundamental belief so Kobe's parents would probably say something like this yes if you put in all the work that is required you can become president young Kobe was playing in a kid's Summer League and now listen to how good one of the best players ever in the NBA was as a kid yeah I come playing and I don't score one point the entire summer really not one how old were you 11 10 11 and you're playing against other ten eleven year old story the interviewer Lewis house was like there has to be a catch what is the catch why couldn't basketball great Kobe Bryant score one point as a kid I need a score once not one were you in the game I was in again how'd you not score because that was terrible really yeah nope there wasn't any catch he was playing in the games against kids his own age but just wasn't any good I can't imagine anything more inspirational than this Kobe Bryant is generally considered top three basketball players of all time and he was that terrible then this is mind blowing his father was a decent professional basketball player slams up down we would surely think that Kobe would be at least okay for his age but nope in his own words he was terrible at 11 years old you that's awful not a free-throw not a nothing now you're surely wondering how how did Kobe Bryant go from being one of the worst basketball players to becoming one of the best in just a few years it's a fascinating and inspiring watch not a lucky shot not a breakaway layup 2-0 points and I remember crying about it and being upset about it my father's giving me a hug and say listen whether you score zero score 60 I'm gonna love you no matter what that is the most important thing that you can say to a child I've seen too many parents do the exact opposite and it terrifies children and children become paralyzed by their own fear because from there I was like okay that gives me all the confidence in the world to fail many times we let her fears of failure hold us back especially as children not wanting to disappoint our parents so he may have put added pressure on himself for being the son of an NBA basketball player so maybe he didn't practice as much because practicing two hours a day and not scoring a point could look worse than hardly practicing and scoring no points we could think of this as it's too scary to try reducing the external pressure on someone who already loves something will make them feel freer and realized that they're doing it for themselves and not for anyone else his father basically made Kobe feel the pride of ownership in his basketball future you may also be able to equate this to the difference of how hard you work and the pride you have when you're the business owner versus when you're just an employee but the hell with that I'm scoring 60 let's go right right from there I just went to work I just stayed with it I kept practicing kept practicing confront it's so inspiring that he knew he had a lot to improve on but it didn't faze him he knew what he had to work on he put his head down went to work I think that's when the idea of understanding a long-term view became important because I wasn't going to catch these kids in a week I wasn't gonna catch him in a year they're doing windmills and dunking backwards and I'm happy to like tap the backboard you know so I had look at it from a long-term because I wasn't gonna give up on the game so that's when I sat down and said okay this is gonna take some father I started creating a menu of things next time I came back as a little better the summer came back a little bit I scored yeah it wasn't much but I scored back half at 13 14 years old and then I was just killing everyone and it happened in two years and I wasn't expecting to happen in two years but it did because what I had to do was work on the basics and the fundamentals while they relied on an athletics ISM and their natural ability this is so awesome Kobe Bryant one of the best players ever is saying that those kids in the schoolyard had more talent than he had but of course it doesn't matter how much talent they had because they didn't put in the work hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard and because I stick to the fundamentals it just caught up to him and yes talent is wonderful to have but there is an inevitable downside those who are talented usually rely on their talent and don't work as hard as someone who wants it more and who isn't as talented right so I had to rely on with skill a lot more I had to rely on angles a lot more I had to study the game a lot more once you have the fun of metal exactly the hard work the mindset and you tack on the 11 it was game Wow right when I was turning 14 I became best clear in the state at 14 or 14 so I'm from 12 to 14 you went from scoring zero into being the best in the state this is probably one of the most incredible stories in all of sports think of the worst kid on whatever sports team you played on it may even be you now think of that kid becoming the best player in your entire state within two years it's a simple thing of math most kids will play maybe an hour and a half two days a week obsessively training 2-3 hours every single day over a year over two years celery make quantum leaps maybe don't you love how simple Kobe makes it because it's just basic math you get what you put into something and if you put a lot more into something you're gonna get a lot more out of it then someone who puts in a lot less I tell the parents of my team I said your kids are gonna become great basketball players saint-like really yeah it's not there's no math show up every single day job every single day do the work for those who are saying everyone puts in no work most don't put in the hours that Kobe is describing consistency of work Monday get better Tuesday get better Wednesday get better right and you do that over a period of time you know not like one month or two months I mean it's three four five six seven eight nine ten years and then you know he can get to where you want to go yeah but your repetitions will be your reputation real change takes more than a week a month or even a year it's staying consistent on those proven repetitions and building on those gains it's fine in what you love to do then we talk about hard work all the time this night you know man if you got to get up every single morning remind yourself how hard you need to work trying to choose a different profession I wake up in the morning excited to get to it you know if I'm not training I'm missing it I'm not watching a game of bass I miss it you know there's no place I'd rather be and if you have that feeling then you're truly doing what God has put you on this earth to do Kobe certainly loves basketball but what's interesting is that in his retirement he decided to leave the NBA and not do full-time professional coaching all five starters level busy or basketball commentary going into the stairs but instead decided to focus on his new loves in life of building businesses and writing so I think there was also a component of competition and challenge for him to be the best basketball player to chase after which also caused him to be obsessed with basketball when you feel like you could be the best in the world at something as soon as that's a very real possibility in your mind where you can see it clearly imagine right now how would you feel Troy's want to outwork your potential yeah it starts getting really exciting you start to work harder than everyone else because you now feel like the leader and becoming the best in the world starts to define you Rudi was one of my favorite films growing up after watching that film I come to understand if I could work that hard every day with my career being and I made a promise to myself I was gonna work that hard every single day so that when I do retire I have no regrets get better every single day and if I live that way then over time you know I'd have something that was beautiful school unintentionally implies specifically with graduation that as soon as we graduate that's the end of learning we have to do in our life but it's actually just the beginning because school gives us the foundational knowledge for us to build upon with further deeper learning if we stopped seeking knowledge after we graduate from school it's kind of like quitting building a house after we just laid the foundation know if you live your life to just get better every single day and do that for 20 years I mean what do you have like Kobe said if we keep proactively seeking more and more knowledge and pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone every day our understanding of our craft grows massively over the course of many years people always ask me how I'm so good at body language and human behavior yeah I have degrees in Social and Behavioral Sciences but that's just foundational knowledge to build off of I'm good at it because I'm constantly reading books on human behavior every day and have been putting it to work learning and practicing it in menu practice is more intense and harder than a game seven will be in a game seven will be easy but if it's not then that's when teams start folding and capitulating you all now know that Kobe is the hardest worker in the game but ever wonder what he does when someone on his team is a slacker you're gonna show up to play and you're gonna allow the gags with the scrimmage through this drill I'm going to beat you I'm going to let you know I beat you I'm gonna want you to reconsider your professional life choice yeah and if I got a fight to get you in the gym that's a problem you want players that are Jim brass players at wannabe in the gym that wanna work and then from there you build on top of that but if you're lazy man I'm gonna talk to you I'm gonna deal with you you don't make me feel Dumber you know you know you know lower my level I don't think so Kobe knows that the people we spend the most time around are the people who for better or for worse will have the greatest influence on us ever here you will be the average of the five people you spend the most time around some people will bring you up others will bring you down Kobe wants to eliminate all the people around him that clearly bring him down and his whole team down but what's shocking is this part watch you can go over there but it's plenty of teams in here where you'll fit right in at the time they were right down the hall from us it can embarrass me in that direction too they were caught halftime 49 lady isn't that kind of crazy to think about in the NBA the most elite group of basketball players there are some teams who are kind of lazy but it makes sense because there's a reason why those teams don't do well and laziness is a component of why but I found that MBA is a lot of guys played for financial stability and when they came to the NBA they got that financial stability so therefore the passion and the work ethic and the obsessiveness was gone so I'm looking at that I'm like oh my gonna be like taking candy from a baby I wonder Mike wins all these championships when you have your star player who is the first one at the gym and the last one to leave it sets the bar for everybody else he made my job so much easier because of his leadership that's leadership right there leading by example and driving others up to your level he ever really gets the credit for the amount of work that he puts in because he made it look effortless his teammates would get a little frustrated with you because you did set the bar so high but that's that's what made the Lakers great when this star of your team is working harder than everyone else others have some self-reflecting to do it's hard work as is defined by the world but to me there was no place I would rather be I'd rather be on the track at 4:00 in the morning running wind sprints and being a way of Rome at 6:00 be on the court at 9:00 train until 3:00 I'd rather be doing that do anything else so it wasn't like it was hard work I just found what it is that I love to do one things I would do is everybody would be at the cafeteria where you know eating and doing all sort of stuff I just go back to the job yeah maybe on the suburbs but you're not gonna outwork me I had a great quote that said rest at the end not in the middle and that's something I always live by talking to some of the players that used to play with and they were like we'd invite him to Vegas didn't want to go we invited to play golf didn't want to go and they're like it's not that he was antisocial at all it just wasn't getting him closer to the goal of being the best at basketball ever wow this is the mindset of a champion it's that laser focus that we'll talk about soon if I'm buddies with you from high school what happened to our relationship who suffers and you understood that you okay people that love you like friends and family right they know that about you so they let you be you and when you reconvene you pick back up where you left off but make no mistake about it everything in between is lost I didn't want to be away from it I wanted to play all the time like a lot of guys have fun hanging out on the pool in Vegas and I was consumed with this quest of trying to be the best the Kobe love basketball but there was more to why he was so addicted to it it was the quest to become the best ever that made him even more addicted to basketball you know we weren't there yet there's so many things had to figure out like am i training properly am i working on the right things on the court there's so many things to do I didn't have time to go and hang out over here there's so much more to know and do and Kobe was the best in the league and he's saying this while the middle-of-the-road guys in the NBA are partying it up in Vegas Kobe is practicing and those other guys are probably feeling like I know enough but the best in the league is thinking nope I still have so much to learn and do let's see a lot of players will just take vacations just to take vacations or just hang out just to hang out like I'm not I never did that I think is how do you negotiate with yourself I think that's the biggest thing inside of here you talk yourself out of it you say okay well won't be a big deal do it are you able to negotiate your way out of that little voice telling you it's not that important I think that's what separates people going to do great things versus people who don't what Kobe seems to be saying is that those excuses and exceptions we tell ourselves seem to add up and build up over time for example we're tired on Monday morning and say I can skip a workout today it's just one day it's not a big deal then what did we just do yeah we've set the precedent that is not a big deal to skip a day when we're feeling a little tired which naturally leads to what yeah more skip days and sometimes so many skip days that we say we fell off the wagon I went to goat mountain and I talked to magic Michael bird Kim Olajuwon Jerry West Oscar Robinson Bill Russell I would talk to them Kobe is very selective of who mentors him and sought out only those who he admired and when Kobe said with a direct finger point I would talk to them I would talk to them he's implying he protects his mind from others who may give him bad information Kobe wanted to be the greatest so he sought out the greatest to teach him Kobe knows that we don't need just any mentor we need the right mentor because we're your mentor is and is going is surely the direction where he's gonna point you because that's what he knows so if you're not as fortunate as Kobe to have access to the best people reading books on some of the Great's is so much better than just choosing anyone as your mentor you can be mentored by people who aren't alive 100% and their stories still live which brings us to the importance of storytelling yeah so I went to them I started understanding the ins and outs of the game you know how they approach things in their level of detail and obsessiveness the more we mature the more responsible our dreams become so it's not a matter of pushing beyond the limitations expectations it's really a matter of protecting your dreams protecting your imagination that's really the key and when you do that then the world just seems limitless Kobe describes protecting your dreams as children we dream freely and think anything is possible but then when we get older we start to lose that dream less and don't believe we can make our dreams real sometimes we lay down in bed and visualize things that's at least how I would go to sleep and I would see myself getting hot let's go ten straight points why would you ever interrupt that like you're not gonna have a dream and be like okay then he misses his next six but it's not gonna happen so you just keep dreaming a dream in a dream and so when you download that into your system and you go out in the court and you're just executing things that you've done thousands of times before and you have that dream then that becomes possible Kobe imagines what he wants to do on the basketball court in his mind before he goes to sleep at night and dreams of making those insane basketball moves and scoring those ridiculous number of points in a game this would be eight [Applause] since he already dreamt it he has that vision in his mind of him doing it and it's just a matter of making another dream reality by putting in the work you know a lot of times I've seen players even myself and you know when I was younger being consumed by a particular fear and to the point where you're saying okay nah it's it's not good to feel fear I shouldn't be nervous in the situation it does nothing but grow first is stepping back and saying yeah I am nervous about the situation yeah I am fearful about the situation well what am I afraid of and then you kind of unpack it and then it gives you ability to look at it for really what it is which is nothing more than your imagination running this course you know when we hide from our fears our imagination grows it but as soon as we confront our fear acknowledge it and break it down rationally we stop our imagination from growing her fear our human instinct is to survive and not to thrive remember for thousands and thousands of years fear wasn't public speaking or shooting a basketball but what was it yeah it meant life or death to avoid us getting eaten by a saber-toothed tiger not like that anymore but we still instinctively have this strong primal emotion of fear from thousands and thousands of years which was to keep us alive so we can reproduce and take care of our tribe which is why in present day many of us instinctively can't help but to do what we know which in our mind is playing it safe what is losing feel like to you that's exciting it means you have different ways to get better there are certain things that you can figure out that you can take advantage of all right certain weaknesses that were exposed that you need to shore up right so it was exciting I mean it sucks to lose man but at the same time their answers there if you just look at them we all don't want to lose but whether we like it or not failure and losing is part of life and certainly part of competing to win we must compete but to compete we also must accept the possibility of losing so to avoid letting the fear of losing prevent us from competing looking at losing as positive to learn and improve ourselves actually makes losing not so terrible if we think like that we can continuously compete in tougher and tougher situations where we may lose or fail by continuously challenging ourselves to compete in those more difficult situations we'll have more of an opportunity to win bigger learn more and accomplish more in our life every game they watch every game the whole game battle game we're watching the start of the game to the end of the game not like the TV feed watching the in arena feed a layup line the timeouts rewinding stopping fast for winding slow motion every little thing every game with the 82 year old Yoda Phil Jackson became head coach of the Lakers he brought winter who is as brutally honest as you can get it taught me to look at detail things that they're smallest look at body language the energy between players tactics the overall strategy how tactically things are manifesting themselves because I watch so much film then it gave me the ability to see game in real time as if I was watching film the games not moving that fast anymore you can really recognize who's doing what and why they can position guys in the right places in real time there is a saying in business which relates the Kobe's obsession of the details if you take care of the Nichols the dollars will take care of themselves it's an obsessiveness that comes along with it you want things to be as perfect as they can be understanding that nothing is ever perfect but the challenge is try to get a mess perfect as they can be you know what can you do it's in your control so control what you can basketball for me was the most important thing so everything I saw whether it was TV shows whether it was books I read people I talked to everything was done to try to learn how to become a better basketball player everything so when you have that point of view then literally the world becomes your library laser-focused if you try to catch two rabbits at the same time how many rabbits do you catch that's right when we're so focused on just one thing everything around us starts to zero in on achieving that one objective what is the because it's all worth thinking about so everything that goes into our mind goes through the lens of achieving that one objective focus is dream Li powerful I just asked him what's it like the guard Mike Mike mean black Jesus Mike what self black who they should be talking to him it's like you know you're right Michael who do you think you are the great Michael Jordan that's right there's a new kid on town kind of looks at me and starts shaking his head he ended up with 44 and I ended up with 12 he's walk it off he's like be careful you never talk to black Jesus sorry we call him black Jesus or you can call him black cat those players were so scared of Michael Jordan they gave him those nicknames I get that Jordan was the best ever but we compete to win otherwise why even show up my Mac all right Kobe knew how good Michael Jordan was but since he had to compete against Michael calling him those mystical nicknames just gives Michael an extra psychological edge in the matchup nobody seems to be like why would I possibly give Michael Jordan any additional edge over me if I expect to win against him so the level of fear that he inspired in others was insane when I was 18 my first year he got the best of me a bunch of times I was right there the next play you're not intimidating me I'm not going anywhere and I think you saw that level of respect I think he was the same way that common bond where our connection was built very inspired it shows one how much respect Michael had for Kobe and to Al Kobe tries to learn from the greats whenever he can even when he's competing on the court against them I grew up watching him like after you favor ball moves up your feet everywhere else you going on the game I go for it's cool watching these two greats together who have a lot of respect for one another there's a saying that fits well here for those who know no every now and then when you run into a player it has the same energy because I asked a lot of questions all the Laker greats I would always sit down as just asking questions what actually happened there what did you filled it or why bird tough to defend why because he looks lowly I'm missing something so like tell me what I'm missing I would always ask questions and try to learn as much as I could whether you win or you lose is you go back and you look and you find things that you could have done better five things that you've done well that worked figure out how did they work why did they work how can you make them work again but the hardest thing is to face that stuff have to do the hard stuff and watch that game and study that game to not make those mistakes over and over again just because you weren't brave enough to face it got to deal with it face it learn from it I'm notorious for just cold calling people in pick up the phone call them up and let's just talk all of a sudden a question pops in my head I have to know the answer I have to know I can't just say okay I have this question I just kind of let it go no I need to know all right you know so I'll call just ask questions and I want to learn more about how they build their business how they run their companies and how do they see the world why how how does he view product how does he view the process of designing product how does he know that he has the product exactly where he wants it to be how do you know those things how does he see in the world what makes them who they are Kobe would just gold gold people and yes he's Kobe Bryant so they're more likely to want to talk to him but this says a lot about his curiosity and desire to ask and find out why and how those two words why and how why and how surely the most underrated words in the English language kids always ask why and how but when we get older we lose that it's a shame because those two words allow us there learn from others and grow our understanding I have a challenge for each of you make a point of asking why and how as many times as you can think of in a single day and then at the end of that day reflect back on how much you learned you'll surely be surprised I'm a big lover I was wondering I was like wouldn't it be funny if he's got like Taylor Swift in his car I do really yeah I knew I knew I loved Kobe's confidence so many people wouldn't admit to listening to Taylor Swift after the interviewer just proactively made fun of him if he did listen to Taylor I think it's important to listen to people who do great things Kobe could have said I listened to Taylor because my daughters want to listen to her in my car but nope he's confident enough to say I listened to her and explains how he's open to learning from anyone who's on top of their game Taylor's been at the top of the game for very very long time how and why did you catch that more why and how if you were listening to these interviews in full you would notice he talks a lot about the why and the how I encourage you to watch these interviews in full if you want to learn more about Kobe's Mambo mentality mindset I don't care if you like her music or if you don't like a music look at what she's in what she's doing and so I'll look at things like that to try to learn from as much as I can my kids are they're funny man I did something for Taylor Swift at Staples Center and she for a tour she kept bringing out special guests right every night and so we're there and [Applause] Taylor and I were sitting there talking and stuff and my kids are there and my kids go so who's the special guest tonight tell us like uh is your dad stay personal like it's just your daddy go ha man it's about the metaphor that Sports has for life I mean you know Sports is greta's greatest metaphor we have in terms of dealing with life when I was a kid I had a family member that would say to me why are you wasting time playing basketball baseball football the chances of you becoming a professional very small but trying to become a professional in a sport isn't the only value of playing that sport even beyond the exercise there are so many life lessons that can be learned through playing sports and sports you have to apply it in the here and now you're faced with challenges moment to moment you're faced with pressures and anxiety communication or the lack thereof and also there's stuff like it's in the moment so you have to live it and when you practice those things you become better at it and no matter what they decide to do like if IANA decides to not play basketball when she grows up that's fine but she understands the discipline that it takes to work at something every single day so whether she wants to be a writer a director a doctor lawyer she'll have those characteristics how do I take the lessons that I learned through the game of basketball and translate them into building a studio with the things that I can take from that the discipline the commitment the team and community how do you get the best out of each other how do I take those lessons and move those here having that sharp focus is something that I got from the game of basketball I think through actionable things is how we teach our children because we could sit there and tell them tell them tell them tell them win I you know we're kicking listen right but it through sports you can teach them how to think things incrementally because that's the way they behave and it becomes a part of their process in sports it'll become a part of their process in life as well one of the most frequent questions Kobe says he gets is how can I get my kids to have Mamba mentality what do you think is the best way to do that so how can we teach our children what it means to work hard well you do it through training so when I get up in the morning my daughter goes with me through that process she understands the value of hard work and things taking time you can take him to the gym when I would train and they would do things on the side all right we go to the track together and they'd be running around the track and doing this sort of stuff this way they can see it mm-hmm but like with work habits they got to be able to see that stuff yeah let them see you with Mamba mentality and then they'll eventually pick up on it leading by example is the best way to lead as parents you got to lead by example if you want your kids to do whatever it is they want to accomplish in life you have to show them you're writing a screenplay or you're composing a piece of music is that the best you can do don't ask me don't say do you approve don't ask me I'm not the musician I'm not the composer you know so the competitiveness is more from an individual perspective yeah as a leader I'll be able to take the good with the bad man you can't just cause a ship sinking all of a sudden we jump off a swim to another [ __ ] like that you don't do that right you can win championships in front of everybody then you can miss the playoffs in front of everybody you gotta be able to take boats out of it loyalty seems rare these days it's so refreshing to hear Kobe talk about principles and values and not doing what's easy but doing what's right the jersey retirement ceremony I talked about that it might have been easier for you to leave you didn't I thank you for staying loyal to the purple and gold and remaining a Laker for life would it might have been easier for you to leave I think I would describe love as happiness I think I'd describe it as a beautiful journey you know it has its ups and downs right whether it's a marriage whether it's in the career things are never perfect but through love you continue to persevere and you move from you move from and then through that storm beautiful Sun emerges and inevitably another storm comes and guess what you ride that one out too so I think love is a certain determination and persistence to go through the good times and the bad times if you're thinking wow mom and mentality is pretty intense but keep in mind it's not all or nothing so it's for each of us to decide what level of achievement we want Kobe Bryant was living proof of what our mindset can do for us his mom but mentality was so strong within him that if he had lived he could have done anything he decided and over time he would have been successful I think the definition of greatness is to inspire the people next to you it's not something that lives and dies with one person it's how can you inspire a person to then in turn inspire another person but then inspires another person and that's how you create something I think lasts forever yeah and I think that's our challenge as people when someone great passes on I believe one of the best things that we can do is share with others their incredible life so that person can now live on in each of us and inevitably pass down those qualities to future generations perpetually making our world a little better Kobe has inspired many of us to also be great and I'm hoping Kobe's Mamba mentality is now crystal clear so each of you may use it in creating your own greatness in your life and our world now in the comments which part of Kobe's mama mentality most resonated
