hi I'm Shannon from host improvements comm and I want to show you how I fix a very common problem once you've added styrofoam on the exterior of a house but you haven't changed your windows generally if you add enough styrofoam you might end up at a point where you know by the time you put your siding if you put your siding on here you're gonna actually see the foam and obviously you don't want that it's ugly and you just need that finished off somehow well I'm going to show you now what I do to fix that problem so you can see here what I'm going to show you is how to get from what you just seen to this finished product where you've got the nice big wide accented trim and join to that I've got a piece of PVC in here that covers up that ugly edge of the styrofoam that would have been showing I then caulk this joint against the existing window and you've got a water proof joint and it all looks good okay so there's actually quite a few different materials you could do to make the same thing for what I used I used pre bought materials and I just cut them down to the sizes that I needed so I've got this composit type wood product here that can be painted whatever color you want and like I said before I used a piece of PVC for the actual Ledge part the butts around the window I went this route because I wanted this accent color around the framework but I liked the fact that this white PVC matched the white on the windows and once I caught that joint it's basically maintenance-free right up against the window so but you could make this out a 2 by 4 or 1 by 4 or whatever you wanted you could basically it's just the basic idea of how to do it is what I'm going to show you and materials you choose to use is up to you so so what you need to do first of all so you've obviously put foam on the wall already and what we need to do though is trim this foam back so that this piece right here can slip in there outside the perimeter of the window so you could either choose to maybe cut your sheets short or whatever when you're putting them on or what I usually do is I just take a piece of the stock that I'm going to use because that's the right thickness and to get my knife come on here I basically use it as a gauge I line it up where I want it on the outside edge of the window against the foam and then I scribe on the back side against the into the foam so I know how wide to cut out now I know you can't see my knife right there but it's pretty basic so if I was doing it down here I would line that up and I'm just running my blade across there and all I really need is a scratch or a mark to start with so you can see my mark all the way down the edge of the window and now I just need to cut that out so I'm just using a sharp utility knife with an extendable blade I'm trying to cut as close to perpendicular as I can to this from the surface in I'm just gonna make a series of cuts until I cut through the foam or cut deep enough for my little piece that's going in there okay so you just make your cuts down there and then this little piece will come out once you get it cut right through now I've actually completed that process on a different window so we're gonna move over there and move on to installing the the parts okay so you can see around the perimeter of the window I've already took and took on out the foam that I need it out of the way and in this case if if possible it's nice to leave a little bit of foam back there but in this case my piece was that was gonna be left behind was only gonna be like quarter-inch so it's really not doing anything anyway so I just cut it right out so I want to start with my bottom piece and I've pre-cut these all to fit and the way I did it you mighta NORs when I showed you the finished product on the other side of the hole is I had my side pieces running past the top and bottom and being flushed to the outside whatever your preferences really doesn't matter so I've got this piece cut to basically be is the same width as the window and I just want to simply stick it in there right now I've it's got a good enough friction fit that I can just stand in there now my next piece is gonna fit in this side groove and I'm gonna just push it up so it's flush to the bottom of this one now if you want to you can put a little bit of adhesive in there in this joint which I'm going to do I grabbed the wrong one okay so I've got my bit of adhesive here I'm just gonna put a little bit on this and here and once that sets up and the two pieces are together it'll just keep them from twisting from each other so that was this piece try to get this one in without getting a real mess with the adhesive like so so now to fasten this you can see I've pre-drilled and free countersunk some holes and I'm using some long screws so I've got to be long enough for the thickness of the trim thickness of the styrofoam and still getting you know maybe an extra inch or so of length so I'm getting it back into the wood in behind there so once I'm happy with my fit I'm just gonna get the bottom one screwed in here you don't want to squeeze it rate up just snug it up so it's just fitting nice okay we've got our adhesive in this corner and this is flush on the bottom so I'm happy with that one I think so and that'll hold it there until I get up the other ones in place so basically can do the same thing on the other side you can see see already I mean it already just looks better it looks finished we don't even have the caulking or silicone in there yet okay so I flushed it up put it over tight there sorry I'm right-handed so I got to get on this side to do it now you might be asking because I didn't show before but you might be asking well how did I attach these pieces I used the same construction adhesive just a little bit on the back between the two pieces and a brad nail through the front edge and all these little spots including the screw holes will get filled in as you'll see later on and then you just cover it up once it's painted okay so I'm going to move the ladder into place and put the top piece in in position okay so once they're in there same thing just simply screw it in now obviously it'd be easier to Brad nail this on if I had you know long enough Brad nails but I think these screws are like five inches long to accommodate all the thickness that we have to go here so that's why I'm using screws okay so we've got the trim all attached to the wall I'm just kind of dusting off you can see the windows quite dirty kind of dusting it off before I use the exterior caulking so in order to make this a lot more watertight I'm going to put a just a small bead all the way around the perimeter where this PVC trim piece meets the vinyl of the of the window frame and as well you may not be able to see it but I'll do these little corners up in here and the bottom as well just anywhere where water might get in and then once I do I'll do a little sample of that and then I'm going to do a couple of these screw and nail holes just give me an idea what what you got to do okay so like I said just a good quality exterior caulking I'm not sure this is all white on weight so I'm not sure how well you'll be able to see it but just put a nice little bead down the corner and then we'll tool it with my finger and we're kind of working fairly good Sun Lake today so I don't want to do too much at a time before I to it I'm just gonna kind of work my way out of this corner a bit and then I'll quickly hit it with my finger and then I can do more later okay so I just do it and give your finger a little lick and smooth out that caulking and what that does is that I keep saying tools it it just makes sure you got good contact there and it kind of basically smooth sat Hoda I guess is the best way to describe it like it almost disappears there now okay all you can see where it starts and stops there just to get a bit of an idea so now on these where the screws and stuff are like I said I countersunk the screws because you could just paint it the way it is but it's going to look not nearly as nice you can kind of get these to just disappear if you can get a little bit of caulking in each one just go around the whole perimeter making sure the caulking sealed right to the outside of the hole and then I just kind of give it a couple strokes or whatever it needs because this on what I'm using is textured a little bit of texturing in there isn't gonna hurt it at all it actually makes it blend away quite nice don't get too carried away if your caulking you can always just add a little bit more if it isn't enough but just basically fill the hole up work around the outside and just kind of give it a wipe and get it away and then when I'm doing those you usually end up with a little bit extra on your fingers I don't have it right now but you know you usually end up with a little blob on your finger or whatever and then I just hit these little Brad holes at the same time with those I really have enough of my finger okay so you got the idea just fill in the holes basically putting them in once that all dries then you can just run around and paint the the hole trim this dark part again if you're painting it and finish it right up and it'll look just like what you seen in the coast of the beginning of the video on the finished product so I think this is a good way to to do this there's other other ways to do it and if we get time another day he'll maybe put some more on that just different ways of doing the same thing so obviously if you're putting foam on the outside of your house and you're changing the windows at the same time then I would build the windows out so you don't have to mess around like this and then then the window sticks out further than the foam but that's via another video someday so thanks a lot for watching if you want to help support us a little extra to keep making these
