thanks for joining us again today we're going to be talking about how not to install vinyl siding we're at a property today in Mayflower Arkansas and this job was done by a contractor that sold the homeowner on the fact that they can do the best job of anybody or as good a job as anybody in the siding industry and once he got started on the work I want to realize that things were just not looking right and they weren't painting out to be what he told them or sold them so they called us and got us involved and we come back out to look at it and this is another job that we're going to be redoing and as you guys know we redo a lot of siding jobs we're going to hopefully show you viewers today some things to look for if you've hired a contractor to just be careful and make sure that you get a good job that's going to last you as long as it's supposed to which is virtually you know for the rest of your life however about 80% of all siding being installed today is not being installed properly and it's not going to last so hopefully by watching this today we can help you get a good siding job whether you use our company or not and here's one of the areas that I'm referring to as you can tell this is all uneven the homeowner has had the contractor to put them some new columns in here and they use columns that's too small to even carry the weight load of their carport and as you can see up here has just been kind of you know mangled up for better choice of words but all this should be made flushed out and we're going to show you a picture of this area after Wilson's is finished with it but this is just an example of some of the quality of work that companies are doing and keep in mind before we tore this down that was their finished product here's another example of you know how some contractors are installing vinyl siding and as you can see that's just not going to stay up there it's going to come off in the first windstorm and as you can see up here they didn't even cover all of the wood and it at Wilson's we have a protocol and it has to go up to the metal roof and then we've been to continuous lag up underneath the shingle to assure that there's never any way that any wall or wind can get behind that here's an area and the thing about a vinyl siding job it's a stuff that you can't see on a job which is what determines the longevity and the durability of the job so a lot of homeowners they don't know how to inspect a job but whenever you pull on this it's obvious that they just didn't have enough nails in it it appears they've put one nail up here and run one way down here and you know it's it's our protocol to have one every 12 inches to make sure that that's not going to bow in and buckle out and come apart and as you can also see there's no seal they haven't sealed it anywhere around there to keep any water or moisture out and not on just the door but also the windows as you can see it's basically the same thing there's no sealant here and there's no seal on the bottom those sealant on the bottom to prevent any moisture or water from getting right in behind the final siding and the problem with that is the customers not even going to know for several years after it's starting to deteriorate from the moisture and water getting in here's another area down here on the ground if you can get down here close enough to see they've actually got the vinyl siding taken right into the ground here it's actually sitting down in their landscaping and this is a no-no as well because you get moisture and bugs up in there it's actually mandatory by Wilson's that we keep all vinyl siding six inches off of the ground for termite purposes because once moisture gets in here it's a haven for termites and no homeowner wants to deal with that here's another example of something that was done that is just not finished and if you look down the wall you can tell that it goes though they got the siding about four inches out of level and at the far end it actually goes there goes into the receiving trim but at this end it didn't even get close and as you can see the company was not concerned enough to finish the wall so they still have exposed wood up there they have unfinished house there what's without siding here's just another area this piece right here was obviously cut about an inch and a half too short if you can see that dark crack right there rain air wind can get right inside there get in behind the siding and the homeowner is not going to know for several years down the road that their walls rotting out and here's another example of what's pretty common for this industry and that's a that's an example of someone using scrap material this material comes in twelve foot sections there's absolutely no reason to have a two-foot piece in the middle of your wall so if you see this and you're having siding put on you might bring it to their attention that that's not the right way to do it and here's just another example if you don't cut the siding to fit this piece of siding goes up into this receiving trim but it was cut too tall so it doesn't go all the way up and lock and over time what happens is we and we'll get behind that and literally just peel it off the wall and as you can see here as well there's no vapor barrier behind the vinyl siding which voids the warranty from the manufacturer so before he even finished this job there was no warranty from the manufacturer and most manufacturers have a lifetime warranty on their product so again hopefully this will help prevent you from getting a shoddy siding job this is another example about or this is another example of how Wilson's do things differently from lower portion of this wall was obviously 3/4 of an inch offset from the top and Wilkins would have third this wall out made it flush and when they finished it would have looked like it was put on when the house was new but the way that this is done it's obvious that this house has been remodeled and remodeler you know didn't flush the walls up so the siding guy followed his his lead and also did a shoddy job which is going to eventually create water issues because water is going to run down this get him this J term here leak out the back side and get behind the siding and nobody wants that when the homeowner question a contractor why he wasn't covering this section of wood he explained to her that the gutter would cover that and the gutter will cover it to where you can't see it but it's not going to cover it to keep it waterproof you're always going to get some moisture run back off your roof and run in behind that so again if you're doing siding you're offer you've got a company doing it make sure that they go up to this the roof and turn a leg under the roof to prevent any water from ever getting in and then you won't have to work whatever replacing it again this is just another example of some of the work that we see out there on homes in Arkansas and we see this every day by companies that's still in business and still advertising on TV so if you're going to do vinyl siding or vinyl windows do yourself a favor check out your contractor make sure that you've got a contractor you believe you can trust and then verify everything that he's told you to be true you can go to Angie's List there's a lot of other avenues that you can take but talk to some homeowners that he's worked for they've worked for the company and make sure that you're dealing with a company that you know you can trust not one that you think you can trust okay this is just another example of how some installers that work for siding companies in Arkansas this is how they they install siding if it's something that you know that they don't think is important then it's probably not going to get attached properly and here's what I mean by that you know they laid this in there and didn't even fasten it didn't even try to put a nail because they knew that they were going to be finished and gone before the the wind or the expansion and contraction made that thing come out past that door going to eventually catch water and we all know what happens when you get water and moisture behind your siding you want to prevent that at all cost okay we pretty much went around the house and pointed out several areas and we talked about vapor barrier on the front of the house under one of the windows but the vapor barrier is very important with vinyl siding if you don't have a vapor barrier or vinyl siding condensate on the back side but it's a bare minimum and if you don't have a vapor barrier between your vinyl siding your wood wall the wood wall will eventually get wet damp moist and over time will start to deteriorate and the bad thing about it is a customer can't see it so they're not even aware of the damage that's being done and again we've looked at the whole house and it's obvious that this company did not even use a vapor barrier on any wall not just area area they didn't even try to give this customer a good job this is another area that water is subject to get into I mean there's a there's a eighth of an inch crack right here with no sealant in it there's no seal no call no silicone and nothing to try to keep the water out and as you can see water can go right in there water can get right in there and again water gets behind the vinyl siding and we all know what that causes so this is what you don't want and here's another example of how people use scrap material to finish a run this is another area that's pretty common for the industry there should have been another piece of this material locked on there and finished on out but this is very common if it gets close you know for whatever reason the installers from time to time thinks that's good enough but what that's the problem with this is you're going to get bugs insects possibly snakes birds up there and they're going to be building a nests and just create all kinds of a mess on your deck and eventually push the siding off the wall so again if you're having vinyl siding make sure that there is no holes cracks or openings where any varmints snakes especially can get in because again once they get in there that's their home now and they'll continue to live there and create a lot of problems for you so you want to make sure that you have no openings or holes for varmints or birds or anything like that can get into your home it Wilson's we don't cover any areas with flat metal the widest area that we cover is about three and a half inches wide and the reason for that is it prevents any warps or buckles in the material because the material is basically paper-thin and if you don't put a crease in it it's going to warp and ripple and bow and eventually come off the home so if you're having siding done you're doing it by yourself or for yourself just make sure that you've got a break and that you put bends every so often they keep it stiff and keep it always looking good thanks for taking the time to watch us today hopefully we've given you some information and showed you some things that will help you get a good siding job regardless of what company you however if you want to be assured a great siding job call Wilson's nobody in the industry is doing what we do
