How I Accidentally Became the #1 Mario Maker Player in the World

if you have a keen eye and have been keeping up with my recent streams or videos you might have noticed something a little different about my mario maker account that i haven't really talked about before this guy right here now if you don't know anything about mario maker and how its achievement system works you might just think oh he changed his outfit that's nothing crazy but if you're familiar with the game you'll realize what this outfit represents accomplishing one of the hardest achievements in the game getting rank 1 worldwide so why haven't i talked about this before well because it happened almost entirely by accident let's go back to the beginning on the 25th of may i had just moved into a new apartment and had recently returned to streaming however this wasn't a normal stream for two reasons one i had taken my very first sponsor in years hello fresh and two my good friend and famous mario maker level creator panga was visiting it's going oh yeah hello [Laughter] the stream started without a hitch the content was flowing my text seemed to be working well after my move and the sponsored segment i had to perform towards the end of the stream had gone without much of a hitch well until this moment i don't know what the pang of sleep schedule is he is just the panga let's sleep schedule he just he just does his own thing now i'm no stranger to tech and internet issues i've been streaming and making content for well over five years now and so i figured this was just another bump in the road and i'd be back up live again soon after doing a quick check of all of my stuff to figure out what was wrong i found the issue my internet had gone completely offline now normally when this type of thing happens i just called for the day and come back the next but there was one issue i still had 45 minutes left of a sponsored segment to do this stream so what did i do well i did what any logical person would do i contacted the sponsor and asked if i could reschedule we got the budget stream here dude rocking the mobile data i don't even wait how does this work that's right i booted up the phone stream on the twitch mobile app if you're logged in there's a way to go live from your phone and stream over your mobile data so that's what i did however i quickly ran into another problem i still didn't have internet you see this it's still broken this meant i had two options on mario maker either i played story mode or i made a level now since i'd already beaten story mode i booted up the level maker and scrambled to figure out what i was going to do that's when i realized i had one of mario maker's best level creators in the same room as me after a bit of discourse i handed over the controller to panga and watched as the level began to appear before my very eyes wait what is this i'm gonna make a lull for you to play okay do it right now it's gonna be kaiser okay we're making okay he's making a kaiser level right now i'm making it live oh you got 30 minutes right well now we probably got like 15 at this point but we got some time okay we're making this work for the next 30 or so minutes panga created a short level and for the last 15 or so he handed me back the controller and had me do the clear check for it [Music] oh [Applause] once we hit the full amount of time needed to fulfill the sponsor segment we wrapped up the mobile stream and went offline is this the is this the one okay go away get out of here give me i don't know how to go offline [Music] bye the very next stream i booted up mario maker and showed off the level that peng had created to everyone who had missed it after getting his permission and threw some coaxing by my chat i went ahead and uploaded the level a level that was never meant to even exist in the first place to my account and forgot about it hopefully i i i spelled that right [Music] upload complete whoa get the first clear get the photos get the detours a few days later i was checking my profile by chance and happened to notice a new metal on my profile a gold medal for weekly maker points at first i was confused but after doing a bit of digging i realized what had happened shortly after uploading the level that panga had made when my internet went out i had actually attempted a level making challenge of my own and both of them had been caught up in mario maker's level selection algorithm with one of them making it to top 10 for the week in super expert and the other making it to top 50 in a regular expert because they were both getting a lot of plays it had propelled me up to one of the top 50 makers worldwide for the week now originally i was content to just leave it at that but that's when the rank one mario maker player for clears d steeves brought up the unique circumstance i was in this guy got uh 15 000 maker points guys i actually hit 10k maker points in the last stream look at this we're at 10 100. someone i think it was d steve said i should try to go for rank one for weekly because this will probably be the closest i ever get and i don't know how to i don't know how maker points work but i'm in the top 50 right now i need like 1600 points but i don't know how to do that there was a mere 2 000 or so maker points separating me and the current rank 1 maker for the week which meant that if i made a few more levels i could probably push myself over the edge and hit rank one after taking some time to mull it over i decided it was at least worth a shot i had planned to do some other content on stream that night but i realized that i probably wouldn't have this opportunity again so i jumped right into it once you get rank one in something and you get the outfit you never have to do it again it's permanent so we just this is our best shot we gotta go for it now the original idea was just to make a bunch of short levels then try to get members of my twitch and youtube community to go play and like them now while this would have probably worked and gotten me there i know i wouldn't have personally felt satisfied with it it would have felt very hollow and forced so i decided to take another route quick 15 minute level challenges um i could make juicers i think i'm gonna try to make some short actual just little platformers though i was thinking about gaming the system and just like uploading like a bunch of one second levels but i don't think that's fun for you guys and i want to at least give it a little effort so we're gonna we're gonna gamify it because i love games we love games so we're gonna do a little 10 minute countdown and we're gonna try to make a level in 10 minutes the plan here was very simple i gave myself 15 minutes and i tried to make as good of a simple fun platformer as i could in that time my hope was by creating a bunch of levels using different themes and styles maybe a few of them would get swept up in mario maker's algorithm like the first one did and that would be enough to get me across the finish line i didn't try to make anything too flashy or hard just something that the average player might get in their endless run and think dang you know what that was pretty good i think i did a good job of that for the most part but some things didn't work out quite like i'd hoped [Music] wait why'd i put the power up here don't you just die [Music] uh okay maybe that was not my best decision maybe that was not my best level design choice as the hours of the stream that night began to wind down i periodically checked the leaderboard and it seemed the plan was working my levels were beginning to get plays and my weekly maker points were going up and up but it didn't quite seem to be enough as the stream drew to a close and the night ran later and later i told my chat i had enough energy for one final level for the fifth time i booted up the level maker and rushed into my last level for the night okay we'll do one more guys and then i gotta go let's get a little late here honestly you know not a terrible stage i don't think i think i think it's fine it's probably just kind of short okay that's the final one i don't think we need to upload any more levels this is my i you know i feel like i'm grinding today look i have this i get the ribbon this is exciting i've never had a ribbon before this is my first ever ribbon that's the first achievement i've gotten in this game in six months once it was done i took a short break to get some water and run to the bathroom and then check the leaderboards one final time at this point i was in second and with every refresh i was closing the gap whoa i didn't get a picture of the third place but we got the second place this is massive this is a big moment in my career we've made it to silver status still silver class we gotta get we're gonna get four points i guess five technically this is huge we could get we could get there this is doable i don't know how maker no one knows how maker points work but all i know is that we're going through the roof right now stocks are on the rise let's see let's see i'm gonna hit with a refresh then finally it happened we went down i like it adding to the suspense very exciting we're fresh again where are we at now oh we're back up it's like it's like the stock market dude we're all over the place okay okay wait a minute that wasn't in the script okay let's try this again and then finally it happened okay we're gonna wait we're gonna wait let's do the here we go i'm gonna refresh i think maybe we'll get there [Music] let's see oh we've done it dude all it took was me making five levels in two hours this is uh the first time i've ever been rank one at anything actually in this game we get the gold medal which is uh very very hype i had done it seemingly out of nowhere and completely by chance i had accomplished something that i had never done before in my over three thousand hours and three years in the game i originally thought that this was something that i'd never accomplished yet at nearly 2 am on a thursday morning during a normal stream of mine it happened so there you have it it just goes to show that even the most random things like having your internet go out can turn into a chain reaction of something positive the moral of the story when you need to accomplish something just hope your internet goes offline for 12 hours or something like that thanks for watching
