[Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] my [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so um [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] to all of you at home you on your own or with someone else and to all of you here in church very warm welcome to our celebration of mass and of course be you young or old married single divorced whatever your gender or sexuality i'm delighted you can join us for this mass on what's known in the church today as home mission sunday and we will have our lord's teaching on one effective way in which we can spread the good news of his gospel in addition to our own personal cares hopes and needs in this mass we're asked to be mindful of the following people who are in various stages of illness and we are in solidarity with them in prayer including grace mccombie pauline harrison simon davis jack leonard mary o'brien peter nicholson pepe mengerini peter lindblom susan greener christopher levant ambrose mulroy mary drinkhold kathleen bellshaw claire lamont christine wickens jane noble father kevin daly and ian smith and we're asked to remember too the repose of the soul of margaret mary mcmenamin mother of rona who died in aberdeen this past week in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you we pause for just a few moments now to consciously place ourselves in the presence of each other and in the presence of jesus we remind ourselves of his love for each one of us whatever our faults and failings and we entrust ourselves to his mercy have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned against you show us o lord your mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray o god who founded all the commands of your sacred law upon love of you and of neighbor grant that by keeping your precepts we may merit to retain eternal life through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever because in the gospel today we have the second of three predictions of his passion by jesus the first reading is chosen to complement this and originally it's about a good law-abiding jew who is being persecuted by people in his society who are uncomfortable with his religious and moral practice and you'll see as we hear this how the early christians came to identify the person here with the suffering of jesus in fact it's seen as a prediction of his passion and interestingly the anglican church's book of common prayer selects this reading for good friday morning and also the psalm that follows it which is the prayer jesus made his own as he faced his passion the second reading is from the leader of the christian church in jerusalem towards the end of the first century and as you'll see there were rifts sex and factions in the community there as there's always been in mother church a reading from the book of wisdom the godless say to themselves let us lie and wait for the virtuous man since he annoys us and opposes our way of life reproaches us for our breaches of the law and accuses us of playing false to our upbringing let us see if what he says is true let us observe what kind of end he himself will have if the virtuous man is god's son god will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemies let us test him with cruelty and with torture and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof let us condemn him to a shameful death since he will be looked after we have his word for it the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] listen to the words of my mouth [Music] i will sacrifice to you with [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james wherever you find jealousy and ambition you find disharmony and wicked things of every kind being done whereas the wisdom that comes down from above is essentially something pure it also makes for peace and is kindly and considerate it is full of compassion and shows itself by doing good nor is there any trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it peacemakers when they work for peace sow the seeds which will bear fruit and holiness where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start isn't it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves you want something and you haven't got it so you are prepared to kill you have an ambition that you cannot satisfy so you fight to get your way by force why don't you have why you don't have what you want is because you don't pray for it when you do pray and don't get it it is because you have not prayed properly you have prayed for something to indulge your own desires the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] i am the light of the world says the lord anyone who follows me will have the light of life [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark after leaving the mountain jesus and his disciples made their way through galilee and he didn't want anyone to know because he was instructing his disciples he was telling them the son of man will be delivered into the hands of men they will put him to death and three days after he's been put to death he will rise again but they didn't understand what he said and were afraid to ask him they came to capernaum and when he was in the house he asked them what were you arguing about on the road they said nothing because they'd been arguing which of them was the greatest so he sat down called the twelve to him and said if anyone wants to be first they must make themselves last of all and servant of all he then took a little child set him in front of them put his arms around him and said to them anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me the gospel of the lord most of you will know this a little over 30 years ago a law came into force in england and wales known as the children act which states that the interests of children and young people up to the age of 18 are paramount in all considerations of their welfare and safeguarding it's known as the paramouncy principle no other considerations are allowed to override the right of children and young people to be protected from harm the place and role of the child in modern european society has changed dramatically over the past century for example it's no longer acceptable or lawful to have children working in a coal mine or sweeping a chimney or working in a factory according to law now the needs of the child must be placed first in middle eastern cultures the child was placed last and it was the same in the first century palestine the birthplace of jesus children had no rights whatsoever in fact they had the lowest status of all even in the middle ages saint thomas aquinas who died in 1274 hailed as one of the greatest of all theologians in the church taught that in a house fire a husband was obliged to save his father first then his mother next his wife and last of all his children in a time of famine children would be fed last after the adults is there a father or a husband who would behave that way today it's important to bear all this in mind if we're to understand what jesus meant by his teaching in today's gospel the context is that he discovered some of his followers were squabbling over their status or their rank in his new kingdom expecting him to be a political and liber um military liberator who would overturn roman rule and establish a new political rule in palestine his followers jostled amongst themselves for privileged roles in what they understood was going to be christ's new earthly reign and when jesus became aware of this we're told he sat down this is the traditional posture for a rabbi giving a fundamental teaching and then he declared this if anyone wants to be first or greatest they must make themselves last of all and servant of all and then embracing a child he said anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not just me but the one who sent me now the word christ uses for servant in these words is the greek word diacanos or diaconus from which we take the title of deacon it was used then in palestine for the kind of lonely or menial service carried out by house slaves jesus deliberately used it to explain that in his new community or kingdom the most desirable status is not to be top of the tree but to be a slave to people who like a little child are vulnerable and have no position or status in society the child he embraced was an example of what he meant the slave-like service of insignificant or lowly people exemplified by the child jesus teaches is an essential condition or value of belonging to his kingdom and this is why in saint john's gospel he washes the feet of his disciples at the last supper a role normally carried out by house slaves but he didn't leave it at that he said that if you serve someone of such lowly standing in society in his name you actually are in direct communion with him now for catholics of our generation and younger it's important we note this we deem the greatest communion with christ to be in the sacrament of holy communion but here is jesus teaching another way of being in union with him anyone he says who welcomes one of these little children or what children represent welcomes me and then he adds the following and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me in other words supporting a little one like a child in his time we're not only in communion with jesus we also through him are in union with god the father the creator the one who sent him that's an incredibly profound teaching and one perhaps that we catholics don't pay enough attention to of course we help people who are in need because we pity them feel sorry for them and want to help them but how many of us are consciously aware that in doing it in christ's name i'm actually in union with jesus and through him with god the father what a noble calling so in doing what i can however small or menial my help may be to stand up for support or serve the nobodies in society the vulnerable the powerless people in desperate need those who have no rights i'm not just helping them according to jesus through him i'm in communion with god so in conclusion there are three questions that i pose for myself which you may find helpful to consider how do i make myself last and servant of all as jesus asks who are the little ones the people of lowly or no status who are ignored or made invisible in our society today and what more can i do to be more aware of their needs and respond to them as christ the servant asks and so in response to the word of god we now profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead the life of the world come amen we bring before the lord our own needs and the needs of all god's people for ourselves and for the whole church that god will help us to be servants of one another particularly of those vulnerable and in need and thus bear witness to god's love for everyone lord in your mercy for refugees and immigrants that those who have fled violence and starvation may find safety new communities of acceptance and the resources needed for a new life lord in your mercy hear our prayer for those who are beset by worries and problems at this time that god will bring light and hope into their lives and give them the resources to be strong lord in your mercy hear our prayer for alessia marshall being baptized tomorrow and for for all children being baptized this year that god will bless them their parents and families lord in your mercy hear our prayer for all who are ill that god will bring them healing relief from pain and sustain those who support and care for them lord in your mercy hear our prayer let us pray now for personal needs and other intentions lord in your mercy father of our lord jesus christ open our hearts in love open our hands in sharing and open our eyes to those in need through the same christ our lord [Music] so [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that our sacrifice may be acceptable to god the almighty father receive with favor o lord the offerings of your people that what we profess with devotion and faith may be ours through these heavenly mysteries through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours he humbled himself and was born of the virgin by the passion of the cross he freed us from unending death and by rising from the dead gave us life eternal and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest so in the name of the lord it's prayer number two you are indeed whole your lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and to bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope robert burn our bishop and all your people remember also our brothers and sisters who've fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who've died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever now all of us those at home and those of us here in church we join together and united with jesus we pray as he taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us lead us not into temptation but deliver us deliver us lord from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us by the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb you shall enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul should be healed [Music] uh [Music] [Music] and for the people at home unable to sacramentally receive communion the following prayer my jesus i believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot now receive you sacramentally come spiritually into my soul so that i may unite myself holy to you now and forever amen let us pray graciously raise up o lord those you renew with this sacrament that we may come to possess your redemption both in mystery and in the manner of our life through christ our lord and we ask the blessing of our lady for ourselves and our loved ones in the week ahead our father hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee women and blessed is the fruit of thy room jesus mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen please sit down for a moment there will be live streamed mass here on tuesday wednesday and friday and saturday in the coming week there will be no mass public or private on thursday for mass on tuesdays you don't need to book anymore but you will need to register when you come first into church as the numbers who come on a tuesday are quite low there's plenty of room if you'd like to come on a tuesday as the number of public masses is increasing now with one on saturday afternoon we are urgently in need of more volunteers to help with stewarding and sanitizing the the pews after each service barbara is currently compiling a new rota of helpers to start at the end of the month and we would be very grateful if we could have more volunteers training would be offered and if any of you want to know more about that or are willing to help it's not just me but it's to help each other would you please get in touch with me we heard from the bishop in the past week about the easing of restrictions in church and really nothing changes other than we're allowed now to gently reintroduce singing at mass but wait for it you have to keep your masks on which fair enough and what we thought we would do is we'll just gradually intro reintroduce the main parts of the mass like singing the holy holy the gospel acclamation the lamb of god just some of the main texts of the mass which are meant to be sung anyway and we'll start that god willing at the end of the month what perplexes me about the easing of restrictions is we are asked to wipe down all touch points in the building including the pews after each and every service but wait for it we're allowed to reintroduce the offertry collection and have the baskets moved around from hand to hand without sanitizing before everybody touches it see mother church is very wise when money comes into it we have ways of making people pay i'm i'm jesting i hope you don't take this too seriously but it's for everyone's safety we do this so we need more helpers if we're to have the masses properly cared for so please do get in touch with me if you can help everything else is on the newsletter page of the website if you didn't receive an email from me and john curtis during the week about putting inscribing some text on the sandstone steps as you leave the building do get in touch with me and we'll include you in the circulation and as always thank you so much to our readers eucharistic ministers stewards and cleaners who so faithfully have been serving us this past year since the re lockdown ended thank you so much please stand we ask god's blessing for each and every one of us in the week ahead the lord be with you and may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go in peace glorifying the lord by your life [Music] you
