I found five things to add to your day pack that could really help you when you're in the backcountry if things don't go right that's next hey guys Chris here so when you go on a day hike or backpacking it's really important that your backpack or your day pack is got the right gear in it so if anything goes wrong you are prepared for anything to happen so there is a group called the Mountaineers they were based out of Seattle during the 1930s and they put together a list called the ten essentials to have in your backpack your day pack when you're out that could really help you cover all those bases I'm going to go over that really quick but what I'm doing today in this video is we're going to talk about five additional things that I found that I wanted to add to my backpack in case things don't go right and these are some pretty cool things to have to it they're very small but they will make a big difference if things don't go right so let's let's take a look at this list really quick and they're gonna go on to these five things so the ten essentials number one is navigation which would be your GPS paper map a compass however you're going to navigate through your hike number two would be a headlamp number three is sun protection and that would be sunscreen a Sun Hat or some kind of a head protection and a UV protected clothing I like those shirts that have the SPF rating on them that's very helpful for sun protection number four is first aid goes without saying number five is a knife number six is fire and way to make fire a way to maintain a fire and number seven is a shelter this would be like a Biffy emergency bivy or an emergency blanket or even a tarp could be a shelter that you can keep in your backpack extra food extra water extra clothes so make sure that you have these things in your pack and you're ready to go and prepared because this could be essential to your survival when you're out there and things that work go so and I need to do this as well I need to be in that habit of just putting these things in there even though I don't think I'll need them I may need them so lei ways let's get on with this list okay number one you're in the backcountry you're hiking something goes completely wrong you're stuck people are looking for you you need to be found the best way to be found is with a whistle this is called the windstorm this is the world's loudest whistle you can deer this up to a mile and a half away this cost six dollars and fifty cents I got this on Amazon and this saying goes up to almost a hundred decibels very loud very powerful this is not a toy this will actually hurt your ears if you're not careful and I would use this also if there's wildlife that you're not comfortable with that's being aggressive say there's a bear or a mountain lion approaching you I guarantee if you blow this they will get their attention they'll most likely leave the area so something to think about also if there's an intruder or you're in a parking lot and there's somebody you're not comfortable with that's maybe threatening you you put this in your mouth cover your ears and you blow that for 20 seconds not only is it going to lurk the whole area it's gonna sent a shrill to their whole body and they're just gonna want to get out of there as soon as possible so windstorm whistle uh you might want to consider getting one of those I got one and I also got this lanyard with it I added that so I'm gonna keep that with me when I go hiking number two and the essentials list is a headlamp in addition to a headlamp I'm gonna recommend you get something like this this is called the lumen a pack light nova USB solar charge inflatable packable lantern yes this is something I'm going to be adding to my collection I've had it for a while but I need to put it back in my pack and make sure I have it if I need it this cost 24.95 on Amazon it's five ounces is four and a half inches by four and a half inches it has 75 lumens 24-hour max runtime listen flate this Singlish air this works little valve stem at the bottom here inflates very easy there it has a handle at the top here and here's turning on right there it's got different settings it just gets lighter or softer and and it flashes at the end there and at the top we have a charge indicator very helpful and this is what's cool put this this strap is you can strap this to the outside of your day pack and while you're hiking this will charge while you're hiking just make sure that solar panel is facing upwards this will take about six hours to charge with the solar panel there is a micro USB plug in right here this will take one to two hours to charge it with that and like I said it's got 24-hour max runtime this thing is water proof up to about a meter deep and it will actually float in the water so you could actually put up a little rope on it or twine or something put it on there the creek and float it if you wanted to very cool to have if you're hiking and things go wrong this would be really nice to have like I said to hang off the back ear pack at night if you're trying to get back to your to the trailhead and you have to headlamp and nobody else has lights they could follow you with this on your back or you hang it in a tree while you wait for you to group you put it on the the flash setting like that you could have that hanging up in a tree it's just it can be very helpful takes up hardly any space folds down really easy this is what I'm adding to my pack I've had this for a while but now like I said I'm gonna re add it to my pack that's why I'm good to go but inflatable solar Lantern okay so you're a date hiking you're ready to take a break and you sit down on a rock you sit down on the log you sit down on the grass and it doesn't always work out really great sometimes you get wet sometimes it's very uncomfortable this is something that is a non-emergency thing but very practical to have and very helpful to have when you're out day hiking or even backpacking I got this this is called the therm-a-rest zc it's just like the therm-a-rest z pad z light pad and this thing folds out like that it is 16 by 13 inches at ways just to come to this it has this coating that will reflect heat back to you very nice it has a strap here that will wrap around and clip like that real nice hook on it very heavy-duty and this thing is virtually indestructible from what I've seen I just picked this up it is 1495 on Amazon I got this at REI very helpful very a lot of uses for this like I said it'll reflect the heat back to you sending a wet picnic table oh I'm gonna put this down I'm gonna sit there and with that you're ready to make your campfire you're gonna place the Neil know right there you want to work with your camera work on your camera change your lenses adjust your batteries those kinds of things you'd have a clean surface to work with now right here another thing is you're going into your tent for the night and you kick your boots off you step on this in your stocking feet and take off your jacket or whatever and then you can head in and not have to stand on the dirt those are just a few of the uses people really like this because they're finding uses for it all the time the therm rest ZC it's worth getting I'm going to use it for myself there's alternatives for this I've seen eight or nine dollar versions of this kind of thing but very practical very helpful and anyways the ZC I'm happy with that so number six on the ten essentials list is fire a way to make fire I'm gonna recommend and this is what I'm doing is the Yuko storm proof matches these can be found on Amazon for 595 or the Yuko website and I got these these are also at Walmart as well this is really awesome they are virtually completely windproof and waterproof so when you strike this thing it will last from 12 to 15 seconds and there is almost no way to put this out what a great way to start your fire hassle-free and it comes with about 25 of these matches does come with some strikers inside here and the strikers go on the side here this case has a rubber gasket around it and that is waterproof as well but these are awesome I've had these for a few years and I just like knowing that that match is gonna stay lit for a certain amount of time and I don't have to really even be concerned about a lighter works as well but these can really make a difference when you're in the backcountry you costar proof matches ok so we all have cellphones and we all need a way to charge them in the backcountry if you take your cellphone with you most of us do so I've gotten for myself the black way a portable charger power bank this saying is pretty cool it's very rugged very shockproof heavy duty it is dust proof it is waterproof and let's open this up here it does have a flap here that opens up and there is a micro USB in the center of it dual USB ports are so you can charge two devices or two laptops with this it does have a indicator a charge indicator right here at the top you press that once and it shows you the full charge or half charge or one quarter charge or no charge I really like that as opposed to a single light that's either on or off letting you know also if you hold this down for 3 seconds 1 2 3 it has an LED light on it look at that isn't that awesome really helpful in your campsite while you're hiking if something goes wrong you got even a built-in light right there which is very cool does have a carabiner on it as well this carabiner has a screw driver a little little wrench right here and a bottle opener kind of practical there it can click clip on to your belt as well if you're walking around camp or you don't want to lose it I clip mine inside my day pack so it's right there where I need it very helpful this thing is $26 in 88 cents on the Walmart website you can also be found in the black web web site I believe it's also on Amazon there are other alternatives that are just as good I would imagine that you could find but get yourself a power source to charge your device in the backcountry a power bank how cool is that to have a power bank and be able to you know make calls in the backcountry why am I talking to a coffee mug there's not even coffee in it anyways black web power bank check it out number 10 in the essentials list is extra clothes and so it to be more specific you got to look at the list and figure out what you think you want to bring but one of the things that I bring is I make sure I have my puffy jacket and make sure I have some layers and insulation that would go with this but the thing that I we want to put over the top of that is a shell that is windproof and waterproof but super lightweight so it doesn't take up much room or space in your backpack I have the North Face Summit Series men's windproof waterproof jacket here and this thing is really nice I got this at Costco $50 and I am very happy with this I'm very happy with the color I'm very happy with the the design of it has a visor on the top here on the back there's a cinch to snug it up around your head if the wind picks up and there is a big pocket on the front here a chest pocket check this out zip that down and this pocket is quite large and there is a microfiber sleeve and within that which gives you some options to put little things in there and I like that book pretty nice to have the weather changes and you want to stay warm and dry pull this thing out and you're gonna be happy with that so this is what I'm doing that's going to help me is the North Face summit series but thanks for watching I really appreciate you guys we've seen some growth here the numbers have gone up it's been a lot of fun and if you like what I'm doing like it and subscribe and we're gonna be doing more of this also I want to see comments from you guys about what you would bring that's kind of extra kind of above and beyond but that could be really helpful and practical if things don't go right for you while you're out there in the backcountry so as always thanks for watching Pyke [Music]
