of hebrews chapter 2 and that series title is having the best and it's all about jesus christ in your life and if that's a reality if that's a fact then you have the very best of god at work in you and what that means and how that means and the way the means are brought about in your life is by the lordship of jesus christ and right now as you know jesus christ is in heaven and the holy spirit is here both in the earth and in our hearts as believers and that is very very key to what we're talking about as we look to this portion of scripture that we've been studying now read the verses but we'll focus on where we left off last time hebrews chapter 2 it says therefore we must give the more earnest he to the things we have heard that's a great warning why lest we drift if we don't listen we're gonna drift if we don't pay attention if we don't take the word of god seriously you're gonna drift i can't think of anything more terrifying than to drift away from the anchor that will save your life and here's the scary thing about drifting have you ever drifted away did have you ever did you did you tie your little boat to the dock or drop your anchor and you think it's sitting on the bottom but then you realize are we closer to the shore than we were an hour ago you don't want to drift and so you want to give a great heed and earnestness to what you have heard ever think about it every bible study everything you've read sermon radio program tv program anything that has inspired you to draw you to close closer to jesus you don't want to lose that you want to hang on to that verse 2 says for if the word spoken through angels proves steadfast let's talk about the old testament and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation which at first began to be spoken by the lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him so the author is saying jesus preached it and when he says preached it and taught it he's talking about the word and the power that that word brought and of course the disciples who later became the apostles saw that transpire all to this point verse 4 god also bearing witness both with signs and wonders we talked about that last week and various miracles and here it comes and gifts of the holy spirit according to his own will and that's where we're going to part tonight in verse 4. we're going to look at this carefully because it matters so much in our lives god bearing witness to the fact that his word is all-powerful his word is all-powerful and according to the bible and according to the history of the jews and the history of the church god's word not only came audibly but it came with power when the gospel was preached people's lives were changed everybody listen up i could give you a pitch on i guess uh amway is that even a product anymore is there such a thing what's new to you i could i could be i could be trying to sell you the next iphone or then whatever whatever it is the next thing and i could do that and i would do that and after i'm done doing that you might buy the product or not there's no guarantee and even if you buy the product there's no guarantee it's going to work but you came and you came to the gathering and the big unveiling and this is what happened those are words that just go out and uh it's like madison avenue are you with me it's like it's like a sale but then when the word of god goes out listen you could have a donkey standing up here speaking the word of god and the power is not in the donkey the donkey's irrelevant it's the word and the the bible has supernatural power and you need to know that the bible has this god-ordained built-in power that when the word of god is spoken and listened to when you begin to read it and believe it it has look it's not of this world you guys it's not from here and it has power to totally change your life you have to remember that how does god do this by the power of the word but not only the word god not only changes your life with the power of the word he gives you gifts as believers i'm not talking about presence as in gifts like christmas i'm talking about gifts as in graces god gives you graces that are deposited into your life that gives you the very reason why you were created you were not created for sex drugs and rock and roll you were not created for all the momentary pleasures of this world when are we gonna wake up to that i guess you know what as you get older you wake up to this i'm really enjoying getting old by the way as long as i stay healthy i'm having a good time with this but you know what it's pretty cool as you get older the stuff that used to bother you doesn't bother you much anymore it's like oh i've seen that coming 20 times this watch just wait give it three more days it'll be gone you don't understand you understand this is what's going on ah take a walk around the block you'll be fine it's so great it's wonderful but listen part of that is just understanding the knowing that the stuff of this world it's such a joke and it's getting more goofy every day but the reverse is true regarding god's word god is transforming lives i know there's a lot of bad news in the world but listen good news doesn't you know make the press god is doing tremendous things in people's lives and god's word does that it never diminishes in power god's word doesn't need a refueling it's power and so listen i want to bring you into this and as we go through this we'll go as far as we can but it's very powerful i pray all of you pay attention because tonight really could if you're willing to transform your life so we'll begin with this regarding verse 4 i want you to mark down galatians chapter 4 verse 4. it says but when the fullness of time had come in other words god has got a stopwatch calendar according to god there was a certain moment when just the right moment came when what he had ordered had to happen but when the fullness of time had come here it is god sent forth his son if you're watching tonight and you're jewish or if maybe you're a muslim tonight and you don't believe god has a son all around the dome of the rock mosque in jerusalem in arabic written around that muslim mosque says that god is not begotten neither does god have a son why does it say that because the bible says god begot his son that is god brought his son into the world the bible says the exact opposite that the mosque the dome of the rock mosque in jerusalem says who someone's wrong jeremiah excuse me proverbs 30 verse 4 says god has a son psalm verse 2 says god has a son isaiah 7 14 says god has a son isaiah 9 6 says god has a son the son of god and today the jews do not believe that jesus is the son of god they will they will someday they don't believe now the bible says the veil is over their eyes but according to the bible the scripture says in galatians 4 4 god sent forth this son born of a woman born under the law to redeem those verse 5 who were under the law that's not only the jew first but the gentile that we might receive here it is the adoption as sons all of us adoption adoption the adoption process was originated by god god himself his adoption process becomes listen the christian's birthright god's adoption process becomes our birthright when god says you are my daughter you are my son you are my child the bible says that happens by god adopting us into his family and only god can determine this to be our birthright you say wait a minute what do you mean birthright are you adopted are you birthed yes god adopts us into his family and we are born again that is our birthright so you want to talk about the adoption process becomes the christian's birthright or birth certificate or documentation in this world until we enter into our full inheritance teaches the scripture see jack why are we going this way regarding the gifts of the holy spirit because this is where this is where the whole thing begins right here god makes us his children based upon the atoning work of his son jesus we are adopted into the family of god but god takes adoption very seriously and he covers all the bases i picked you out of the world says god but that's not all the moment that happens spiritually you are born anew you're born a second time so you have birthright benefits you're either in this world you're either adopted or you are born into a family in god's family you are adopted and born all in one and i love that because it matters in the bible here romans chapter 8 verse 14 for as many as are led by the spirit of god that's only the believer that is only the birthright child that's been adopted by god these are the sons of god and of course daughters verse 15 for you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear but you receive the spirit of adoption by whom we cry abba father that's the most intimate thing that we could say to the god of abraham isaac and jacob the god of the bible says i want you to call me abba if you're hebrew tonight if you're jewish tonight you say well i'm not going to say that that's just too personal i i'll call my dad abba but i'm not going to call god abba the bible says to the believer who's been brought into the family of god that we're to call him abba if you're italian the word abba is anybody papa that's pretty intimate is it and it's the bible that says you call me this you call me father abba father papa father verse 16 the holy spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of god i listen to churches for this reason and many other verses why i believe the christians should have absolute assurance of their salvation unwaveringly so i'm not saying that you don't have doubts and fears that attack you but listen out of those moments you have an assurance because god says you're my child and my holy spirit bears witness with you that you're a child of the living god you look at that verse and you tell me what other meaning it could be and i guarantee you this you will not be as confident and calming as what god says to you here verse 17 and if children then heirs heirs of god and joint heirs with christ if indeed we suffer with him that's what we're doing right now in this world that we may also be glorified together this is incredible so listen you're not only birthright into the family of god you're not only adopted into the family of god the bible calls you an heir now when you talk about an air in a joint air do you know what i mean by that regarding an inheritance okay now this is starting to this is starting to percolate now this is starting to cook you're telling me that the god of the bible brought me into his family and according to romans chapter 2 verse 4 that there is this gifting of the holy spirit that he does according to his own will and it's based upon a family relationship that i as his child have with my father in heaven and he declares to me that there is a relationship by which i am the heir oh and oh by the way i am a co-heir with christ himself this is bible what in the world is going on here god is preparing us to receive from his word the truths that we should be walking in and that is walking in the spirit the holy spirit of god god desires in our lives for you and i to move forward in this world confidently and being used by god in power because we have a purpose and the purpose that you're going to find out about yourself is because he gifted you with a task he gifted you with an ability it's not natural it's not human and happy is the christian that knows this there's more though in first peter chapter one verse three first peter 1 3 it says blessed be the god and father of our lord jesus christ who according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again that's born again gave us a second birth to a living hope by the way that that word living hope it's a hope that will never die hey are you guys awake tonight it's a hope that will never die it's a living hope god's hope that he gives never dies it's a living hope it's not like you know eventually hope dies out no not this this is an assured hope what what we would say you could take it to the bank or you could depend on it or you could whatever and so he goes on through the resurrection of jesus christ from the dead verse 4 to an inheritance that is a gifted ownership an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled that does not fade away reserved in heaven for you so watch where this is going i was lost on this earth i was once a according to the bible according to jesus i lived for the desires of my flesh i was obedient to satan and disobedient to god don't look at me that way you were the same thing and then when we were awakened to our need for christ that incredible process began that god was working in our lives and it's going to come all the way through to where he wants to gift you with a calling and send you forth in it and he's going to want you and by the way i understand scripture correctly he's only going to hold you responsible for executing that responsibility that he gave you to the day that you die it's called faithfulness you and i as believers are going to be judged in our faithfulness to what god called us to do and for that all of us we should roll up our sleeves and just be completely passionate about being faithful to what god called us to do and i got to tell you it's a thrilling way to live and so as we look at this mark it down verse 4 is telling us all about the fact that he equips us with power and purpose power in purpose we talked about signs last week and wonders the front end of the verse the signs mean distinct or distinguishing markers intended to arrest your attention signs we talked about wonders being marvels or wonders things that cause amazement and that's all fantastic and that's in the bible and that's great but for me it's not the big deal he goes on he talks about miracles supernatural strength is a miracle remember we talked about how a miracle simply is god defying his own natural laws natural laws exist in this world based on physics god who designed all that is the only one that can tamper with the system which is kind of fun if you think about it if you've ever worked in a lab you have an experiment going on within a closed system and outside in the lab listen don't don't take this out of context if i'm working in the lab and i have on the bench a closed system and i've made it and i'm developing this experiment i'm outside of that box i'm watching it work i'm seeing where things can be tweaked i'm seeing when to intervene make better inside that box there is no knowledge so to speak of my existence because i started it through the switch in a way it went but inside that box is no knowledge of me i'm outside the box the box does not have the ability and all the working parts on the inside to change its own self it can't that's why you you're reminded of this every new year's when you make a resolution you can't do it great intentions you meant well but you don't have the power but when i step in from the outside into the box i can do anything i want with my creation because i made it i can do anything because i'm on the outside i can interrupt what looks like is bound it's not bound to me because i know exactly where to make that cut or to apply that adhesive or are you with me god does that in our lives it's called a miracle i mean i hate i'm i don't i don't want to downplay this miracles are awesome i just i don't think you should follow them you should thank god for them but you don't run around looking for them but the amazing thing is it's not the miracle that happened it's it's the one that did the miracle that's the amazing thing you don't fall in love with miracles you fall in love with the miracle worker and then there's the get the word that we're focusing on tonight and this is the word gifts and it's amazing because the word gifts means this that which is divided up it means to pass out or to distribute these spirituals is the more technical term spiritual gifts graces and god has given the church these abilities all to exalt the lord jesus christ and so for example we're just we're going to stay true to this because i i i love what's here on the notes given by god i wrote everything down studying so i don't want to cheat anything i'm going to ask all of you to turn to first corinthians chapter 12 tonight if you would first corinthians chapter 12. i can read it you'll follow first corinthians chapter 12 verse 1 now concerning spiritual gifts and some of your bibles it simply says spirituals some of your bibles say spiritual gifts or gifts and after the margins it says spirituals the actual greek word is spiritual so it's ba it really says now concerning spirituals in the greek it makes if you're greek and you read greek it makes perfect sense english it's not so easy now concerning spiritual gifts brethren i do not want you to be ignorant first of all concerning spiritual gifts the church is absolutely ignorant you want to know why some of you already you're already nervous he mentions spiritual gifts honey it's time to go you want to know why because you've been abused that's why you're at some place where people are running around screaming swinging from chandeliers saying god told them to do it throwing holy water on you pushing you down in jesus name right the whole room speaking in tongues mass confusion pandemonium and then the pendulum is on the other side where there are no gifts it's a knee-jerk reaction to the other side well paul had it down don't be ignorant about these things and lo and behold that's exactly what after 2 000 years we've become regarding the gifts you know that you were gentiles carried away to these dumb idols that's so fun we could talk about that forever but we won't however you were led therefore i make known to you that no one speaking by the spirit of god calls jesus accursed and no one can say that jesus is lord except by the holy spirit what that means is anybody in the world can say jesus is lord that's not what he's saying it's you mean it you mean it and it's happening in your life because anybody can say anything it doesn't make it true so he goes on verse 4 therefore or there are diversities different gifts but the same spirit so verse 5 there are difference of ministries but the same lord and there are diversities of activities this is so cool but it is the same god who works all in all that means listen god has a gift and he's going to give a gift let's we'll pick a gift if it's if it's the gift of teacher it's one gift that god gives to certain people that he wants to give the gift of teaching to that is a real spiritual gift but how it's practiced in that person's life is very different from the other person and you already know this i have the gift of teaching god gave that to me i know that well god gave dr david jeremiah the gift of teaching and he knows that but both of our teachings completely different and yet listen dr david jeremiah and i could get the same exact verse and teach or study on it and deliver it on the same sunday and you'll get a completely different message but all of it's true how does that happen holy spirit diversity of use regarding a singularity of gift it's remarkable it's awesome you know what and that you should this should excite you too that gives that gives credence i mean this in a way to where you stop apologizing for this god will use the personality he gave you you don't have to repent for your personality now if you have a bad attitude you need to repent but that's not your personality jesus christ died on the cross for your sins not your personality well i wish i was like her i wish i was like him stop that god gave you the personality that you have for a reason and coupled with your calling it's a perfect fit maybe some of you don't know that yet but you're going to find it out that your calling god has engineered for you and you'll see how it will relate in some way shape or form to who you are so very good of him but the manifestation of the spirit is given to each one for the prophet of all every gift given by the holy spirit to you to us to me has to edify everyone else god will not give you a gift that's for you to play with and nobody else can play with you that you lock it up in your room that's not the gifts of the holy spirit the gifts of the holy spirit are for you to exercise so that others are benefited by what god has put in you okay for to one is given the word of wisdom that's a gift of the holy spirit to another the word of knowledge through the same spirit verse nine coming or up 12 was that right for as the body is one and has many members think of us but all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is christ for by one spirit that's the holy spirit we were all baptized into one body whether jews or greeks this is believing jews or believing gentiles whether slaves think of the roman empire 2000 years ago slaves or free and have all been made to drink of one spirit that's the holy spirit for in fact the body is not one member but many keep going if the foot should say because i am not a hand i'm not of the body is it therefore not of the body isn't that great if your foot says can you imagine your foot just goes you know what i've totally had enough of this i am out of here i'm gonna go do my own thing it's like what are you doing if your finger says i am so done i've had it up to here tired of picking your nose and pointing at people i'm leaving you understand i can't take it that's not going to happen it's not going to say that i'm not of the body is it therefore not of the body verse 17 if the whole body were an eye that's scary looking where would the hearing be if the hole were hearing where would the smelling be think of that that's all it would be or one big eye doesn't work that way it's amazing but now god has set the members each one of them in the body just as he pleased this is so key god picks listen god picks god determines where you are supposed to be when using your gift okay i'm going to keep reading this verse in a moment some of you are not going to want to hear this and those of you who don't want to hear this you're exactly the person that's supposed to hear this you will never know what your spiritual gift is and you will never grow spiritually if you hop from church to church like a bee goes from flower to flower you were never so you were never supposed to do that oh i go to five churches you'll never grow you'll never grow until you listen start doing the ministry of blessing other people through the gift that god gave you you are wasting time you're wasting your time you're wasting the time of people who know you because you know a little bit and then you're off and three weeks later you come back and now and you make a circuit find a church and dive head first into it and grow you say well i'm looking for a perfect church then don't go there because you'll mess it up there are no perfect churches that's why that's why we're called a family and we don't always get along families don't get along they have to work things out and so and if they were all one member where would the body be verse 20 but now indeed there are many members yet one body and the eye cannot say to the hand i have no need of you nor again the head to the feet that's scary can you imagine a head just sitting there where now where are you going to go you don't have any feet i have no need of you no much rather those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary if you doubt that stub your baby toe really good your whole body will limp right and those members of the body which we think to be less honorable on these we bestow greater honor and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty i think the power of this but our presentable parts have no need listen but god composed the body having given greater honor to that part which lacks it and that there should be no schism or division in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another if my foot loves my nose and if my nose loves my elbow are you with me then you are going to have a church that is alive because people know where where they are to flourish in their walk with jesus and it's absolutely awesome you say well wait a minute you just said up there that some of the parts are not so desirable some are more prominent some are not i want to be the prominent part we have to go back to maybe like john 3 16 with you you need to check your heart on that one because romans or hebrews i should say chapter 2 verse 4 tells us right here that it's the spirit who does this of his own will do you believe tonight that the spirit of god knows best for your life if you do you tonight are willing to be able to say lord what gift is it that you have for me in this life now we could keep going it's a quarter after i think what might be really good is if we paused right now and asked him we did this last time together we're going to do this again because i've got a lot here but if i force fit some of these things here i've got the descriptions for example the gift of service what about the gift of tongues where's that in the bible what about the word of knowledge or the word of encouragement i want to be able to go through these because something's going to click because you know what we may have sitting in here well i believe this let me take that back i believe that as we walk through the descriptions of the gifts giftings for the church for the believer those of you who truly know the lord you either going to be confirmed in your gift because you know it or you're going to find out what your gift is some of you will find out that god gives multiple gifts to some but here's what cannot happen you cannot leave these wednesday nights being content to not know i mean i honestly am being dead serious with you if you are okay not knowing where you fit into the body of christ for ministry toward others or for others i'm concerned for your soul and i mean that sincerely god's ways are past finding out his ways are too high for us i don't know how i don't know how this works that the more the the days that i have most joy and the days that i have most meaning and purpose are the days that are filled with other people's lives it's christianity if you could describe christianity with one word it would be others isn't that just like god knowing how this painful world would be that he would send forth his sons and daughters into a world that find their true joy just like he did in making others more comfortable more calm more loved more instructed so i'm going to ask right now if you would we're early you don't need to go anywhere we're going to lock the doors let's just pause for now let's just settle our hearts before him i know this is difficult it's we live in a very busy society let's just stop for a moment father we pick up it's precious in some ways we pick up where we left off a week or so ago when we were praying like this somewhat like this heavenly father i pray tonight that this precious church of believers those near and far stop here and now and say lord what is what is the gift that you have given me as as your child i believe in you jesus i name your name but i'm not exactly sure what i'm supposed to be doing as a child of god but how am i benefiting the lives of my other brothers and sisters how does my christian life matter tonight while we are waiting upon the lord right now i'm asking maybe tonight there's a maybe there's a young man or a young woman here that is that has had the thought in their mind of late missions foreign people you've becoming you're more and more interested and curious it started seemingly natural but now it's like i'm thinking a lot now about how i can help someone and you know we live in a world that the missions ministry to the ethiopians is in los angeles [Music] did you know we live in a world now that if you want to reach afghanis the afghan people you can just go down the street you can go down the road god has brought the world to us now god may be speaking to you friend about going to some remote land you don't have to worry about that i promise you you don't have to worry it will be no sacrifice for you because it will become such a love in your heart that wild horses couldn't keep you from going that's when he's in it maybe you're a young man tonight and your heart has been stirred over months with the thought i want to teach the bible and you have found yourself studying more you've found yourself reading the bible more and listen as you read the bible and as you study you're starting to hear very faint low frequency very quiet low volume sermons in your head almost like beethoven would hear an inspiration you find yourself driving your car are working and you have a sermon happening in your mind and you can hear it in your inner ear as it were in your thoughts listen god is calling you to be a teacher he might be calling you to be a pastor are you burdened for people to know the truth does it really consume you that you mu you can't eat you can't sleep unless people know the truth listen god's calling you to be a pastor doctrine is everything to you that's a hill you die on that's a hill you would be happy to die on because god's in it is god stir in your heart tonight because you may be here tonight and you you have found yourself over the course of recent days or weeks you have found yourself un explainably uh emotional when you see someone hurting you don't quite understand it because you don't remember being that tender before and you've even thought what's wrong with me but you see a little child with the mom on the street corner and carrying shopping bags home and seemingly not having much of this world and you see the that moment and your heart begins to you get a lump in your throat and you you want to better their life that could be the gift of helps it could be the gift of service compassion supernatural compassion it's it doesn't become a burden with hut tears going down your cheeks it becomes a joy there may be some tonight that you you don't you caught you you you just can't figure out how is it that it seems like every direction i've turned recently i i just like feel like giving the people the shirt off my back i just i empty out my pockets of of dollar and coin to help that lady that had to put that stuff back at the checkout stand the other day she just didn't have enough money to buy all the milk and the eggs and it just you can't take it and you've got to pay that bill and and you couldn't wait and the as soon as you were done with that by the time you got to your car your phone rang and you got the message that your stock went through the roof and god puts a truckload of money back in that account that you just gave away because he's got a new project for you coming up it's going to be that family that just lost their dad in that fire and you get so excited about it that you actually start looking for opportunities now to bless people [Music] maybe in the last few months your co-worker has driven you crazy in this and you you've even thought about putting in a transfer just to get away from them the guy is so foul so filthy-mouthed and lost that you had enough of it and then one day you woke up and you pitied him and you began to see through him and you began to see and sense wait a minute there go i but for the grace of god and now you find yourself thinking about them all the time and you've been getting a dry mouth you've been getting a dry mouth because you've been getting scared your heart's been beating you see him and there's an opportunity to talk to this reprobate and your heart's pounding your mouth is dry because you know god has been telling you tell him what i did what tell him what i did in your life tell him what i want to do in his life tell him about me and god has given you the gift of evangelism or the gift of an evangelist and you you never would have thought such a thing friends these gifts and so many more are listed in scripture and he begins to stir your heart up excite your soul and i want to say this because it needs to be said you know as a staff we're praying and we're trying to figure all of you out because there's so many new people here we don't we don't know you yet and so as we pray to find out and pray to seek and to discern you should be asking god this if this is your church then what gift is it that the holy spirit wants you to practice and to use what is the need i'm asking every single one of you and this goes for those that are watching wherever you're at in the world for you to minister in your community you should ask god the question right now what is it lord that you'd have me to do how do i live jesus not by word but by action what gift is it god or gifts that you want me to possess that i might exalt the lord jesus christ and be a blessing to the church the church of your people it is the will of god that others be dependent upon your faithfulness my dear friend tonight if you can come and go in a church and nobody knows that you have come or gone it doesn't matter how big or how small a church is your ministry should matter well hey thanks for
