all right hey everyone this is going to be a setup video for gloom holden this is the in hand 18 card version of gloomhaven and i think what i'll do is i'll show you setup for the in hand way to play and then at the end of the video i'll show you what it looks like to use that bonus card to play it on table and to track things that way so when you start out you'd be looking at your scenario book for the scenario that you're on and that's going to tell you the number and the name of the scenario which and actually a picture of the map too that you're going to need and so what you would use that for is to find the map card that you'll be using for this scenario and keep in mind that they're double-sided and they're double halved and so on this half their scenario number one and then if you play it the other way around it's on scenario two so we found scenario number one which is what we'll be setting up for and so this is the map card that we'll be using and for now i'm just going to set that to the side and put these in a pile right here then you would you can either look at the map card for like a cheat sheet and see which monsters you'll be facing you can see we've got the wolves or the hounds there but the scenario book will also tell you which monsters you'll be facing most of the time there's a couple exceptions but most of the time the monsters you'll be facing all of them that you need for the scenario will be on a single card um you may in the middle of the scenario need to like rotate this card or even flip it but most of the time you can get away with just the one card sometimes it'll be two and so you look through and you find the monsters that you need and we've got the wolf here and he's the only one that we're going to need for the scenario so i'm going to set that to the side as well and i'm going to add to my unused card deck here and this is actually what we're going to start with in our left hand what i'm going to do is find the third card from the front and pull that up a little bit i think i typically go with the third card it doesn't really matter but some card towards the middle um pull that up a little bit so that it is sticking out just above the deck a little bit and that is going to help you when you are moving your map card around it's going to help hold the map card in place next thing i'm going to do is take the back card off of that deck and just set it on the table for a second while we get our ability cards set up make sure these cards are on the proper level you'll be upgrading these cards one at a time as you level up your character so at some point we'll be upgrading oops my camera there you'll upgrade a card and it'll go from a level one card to a level two card but for now when you start out the game all your cards are level one and then make sure they're also starting on side a this is your side indicator here and there's an a side and when you flip it there's a b side and so you want all your cards to start on side a and on the appropriate level for the card and i'm going to put those right in the back so that it's kind of flush up against this left side here of the deck and they're going to be oriented 90 degrees from the rest of the deck i'm going to fan these out so that i can see my abilities and then i'm going to take that card that i set on the table a minute ago put it way in the back oriented kind of in the same position as the rest of the main part of the deck here and that's going to help support the ability cards and so they don't slide around as much alright next thing i'm going to do is take my monster card that i had set aside because we're going to be facing this monster in the scenario i'm going to put that on top of the deck then i'm going to take the character hp card i'm going to put it to my maximum health for my character which is determined by your character level and there's kind of a cheat sheet on the card itself here in the middle and you can see for level one i'm going to have a maximum health of eight so that's what i'm going to start on is eight when you're adjusting your character hp card you just have to remember which of these three numbers is your current hp and we are starting on eight i think the next thing i would do is put my range tracker card in which is going to slide in right behind the last ability card in front of that in front of the very back card and behind the back ability card so i just slide it right in behind that last ability card and in front of that card that's in the way back and i'm going to set this to 1 for now we're only going to use the range tracker card when we're in combat and we're not starting out the scenario in combat so that's what it looks like so far then i'm going to take the map card make sure i'm on the right scenario and i'm going to find the starting hex and there's going to be two starting hexes on every single card but one of them is not going to be relevant to you the one that's facing north is the one that you're going to worry about it's typically towards the bottom of your card you can see the cards are double halved and so this would be the starting hex for scenario two and since we're playing scenario one we'll use that one and you're going to track your character's position the hex they're on on the map with these three red arrows some people would maybe for simplicity just want to use the middle arrow exclusively so they don't get confused which is fine it's just sometimes it gets so far over that it kind of gets in the way of my ability cards so you can use your preference i like to use the outside arrows when i'm towards the edges of the map and it doesn't matter you can just switch between those interchangeably whatever helps you remember where your character is but i'm going to start right there and we're almost done here all you have to do is pick up your monster hp card hold that in your right hand and this is the completed setup you can definitely stash this like in front of the range tracker card if you want to free up that right hand for when you're messing with your ability cards and playing those or when you're moving on the map here but otherwise it's held in your right hand and uh yeah that's completed setup for the in-hand version why don't i go through quickly what it would look like if you're going to be playing on table so i'll just set these down for a second your monster card would go just left of center in this there's going to be two rows of stuff here there's let's call it a top row and a bottom row the top row is going to have the monster card for one the map card is going to go in the middle and then the range tracker card is gonna go underneath the monster card and to track the distance then you would just be sliding this card up and down to the right of the map card would go this bonus card which has it gives you the ability to track with a cube the character hp the money you've looted the number of money tokens you've looted in this scenario and then the monster hp so that would go just right of center and then your two hp tracker cards i put the character hp card over on the right and the monster hp card over on the left the reason you still need those even though you're tracking them here is you're going to need the modifier tables for reference uh then in this bottom row i'm just going to set up my ability cards like this and then i'm using the right side of these and then as you discard a side cards i'd flip it to the b side and then as i discard b side cards i'd put them up here in sort of a discard pile when i lose cards i set them like over here so that i remember that they're lost and then i'll track i'll put cubes on this card for tracking things and then i'll use a cube i want to use the red cube for tracking my character position and you can move that around then and then finally i have a d6 i'm using a small one so that it fits in my little container that i haul this around in but you can use whatever d6 you want or honestly whatever die you want because all you're trying to achieve is 33 odds everything in gloom holden is a b or c so you'll be you'll be rolling for your character modifier attack modifiers you'll be rolling for enemy or monster attack modifiers and then you'll also be rolling for monster behavior there's columns a b and c for three different behavior sets for every monster and so what i do is i replace the rolling which normally happens by i'm using the ruler on the top of the monster hp card and placing it on the red line on the character hp card sorry i hit my camera again which is like that and then you just roll and see if you got a b or c and that's how it works in hand but when it's on table and you don't want to do that you can just use a a d6 and values of one and two is a three and four is b and five and six is c and so you'll just end up rolling that d6 a few times um i think that's it the rest of these cards can just be off wherever they're not important for the scenario so that's what it looks like when you set it up on table thanks for watching
