about this case because it's in Indianapolis,
which is a great city. Mm-hmm. But this guy, Craig,
reached out to me because he runs this place
called the Athenaeum, which is a cultural center
that has historic ties to the German community
in Indianapolis. Oh, wow. Oh, nice. It's big. It's beautiful, right? It's got, like,
a theater in there and a gym
and all this stuff. And he loves working there,
but he's feeling anxious. So here's Craig,
and here's what he sent me. Hey, guys.
My name is Craig Mince. I'm the executive director
of The Athenaeum Foundation here in Indianapolis. I just started this job
about 8 months ago, and ever since I've started,
I've had these feelings of dread and just these shivers
of fear run through me while I'm working
by myself at night. I've asked some of my staff
who've been there for years if they've ever experienced
anything like this before, and, surprisingly,
they all have stories, both from themselves and heard
throughout the years, about strange encounters,
shadows, footsteps, voices. But when people turn around
to look, nobody's there, and, honestly, now I'm afraid. I mean, point blank,
I am afraid, as are some of my tenants
and my staff. I could really use some help
if you guys could come down. I can't even imagine
going to work every day and being afraid. Right, like you finally... Yeah. ...get this job you want,
but it creeps you out. -Mm-hmm.
-You ready? -I'm ready.
-Yeah. Grant: Fear of the unknown
is a powerful motivator, so that's why, for me,
with the paranormal, where the lack of answers
can really be terrifying, it's all that more important
for us to get to these people, give them answers
and provide them the tools to conquer their fear. ♪ Okay. Cool. ♪ "I work out." ♪ Recording... ♪ Grant: When you get a case,
and the client is afraid of the potential
of paranormal activity, the best course of action
would be to get in there to separate fact from fiction. The scariest thing is
the monster that's out there that you haven't
encountered yet. When you gather information
and present that to the person, it's now less of an unknown. All right, guys, so we're
heading to the Athenaeum. Mustafa, what can you
tell us about it? Mustafa:
The Athenaeum, it wasn't always
called the Athenaeum. Construction started on it
in 1893. It used to be called
Das Deutsche Haus. The name changed around
World War I, but then it kind of grew into
an overall cultural center to preserve German culture,
German heritage, and now that's what
its primary function is today. That's wild.
All right. ♪ Yeah, so there was one name
that kept popping up in my research
about the Athenaeum, and that is of
a Dr. Knabe. She was a prominent member
of the Athenaeum, and, unfortunately,
she met a really tragic end. She was murdered not too
far away from the building. I also know that she
taught health, but I'm going to find out
more about her. I managed to arrange a meeting between Michael
and Nicole Kobrowski, and they're going to shed
some more light on the good doctor
for us. Grant: Awesome. Well, it's a big
building, a lot of staff, so we want to make sure
everyone there is comfortable -- Craig, the staff,
and anybody coming in there. -Sweet.
-Sounds good. Yeah, 100 percent. ♪ ♪ [ Faint conversation ] Grant: This is gorgeous. Hey, thanks for having us out. Thanks for coming. You know, we saw your video. Mm-hmm. And we could tell
right in your voice that you love this place,
but it's uncomfortable for you. Yeah. Like, since moment number
one walking into the place, it was just
this feeling, right? Like, I just have that feeling
that there's somebody there. There's somebody watching. But you haven't
really experienced... Myself, no, but I've heard
many, many stories. I've -- I've
had the feeling, but I've not had
the experiences myself. I'd love to have you
walk us around... Mm-hmm. ...and show us
some of the spots that seem to have
the most stories, and that'll help us
find the right areas to get information
in order to help you out. Definitely. ♪ Mince: So this is our
foundation office. Grant: Okay. This used to be the building
manager's living quarters. So this was actually -- Oh, they don't let you
live here? No, no, no, no. I don't live
in the building anymore. That's good. Nor would I probably
want to right now. The stories in this space -- feet running down
the hallway... [ Shuffling ] ...and then a shadow person. ♪ Poole: We always had
the office door open. I would start seeing almost,
like, a shadow, head and shoulders,
coming down this ramp, actually. [ Rumbling ] You know, I'd get up
and go and look, and there'd be nobody
in the offices down that way and nobody
in the office down there, and I would call out for
anybody I could think of and just be like,
"Are you guys up here?" But there was nothing. Richel: Yeah. Mince:
The city's oldest theater. Grant: Wow. This building just keeps
charming me. So, paranormal-wise... Mm-hmm. ...what do people report
seeing in here? A dancing couple that dance in
this theater on the dance floor. The woman wears a blue dress. And then that same couple going
in and out of the theater on separate occasions
have been seen. Johnson:
I was coming up the steps and then happened to see
a couple come through, and the doors were open, and they walked
right through the theater. And I'd say, "Excuse me.
Excuse me." They didn't answer, and I said,
"Excuse me. We're closed." They just kept right in,
so I'm coming up the steps. I just follow them in,
and I was in the theater, and they just, all of a sudden,
just vanished. Vanished, right there. Vanished. You saw them... ♪ Mince: So welcome to
the grandma's attic. It was all storage, like,
costume storage for the theater's
performances downstairs. Although I've not heard
any specific stories, like, people just do not want to be up
here at night because -- Just discomfort? Yeah, just wild discomfort
in this area. And you don't
come up here often? No. Honestly, this is
the second time I've ever been in this room. So why do you think
it's negative? I don't know. I -- Just people feel -- Yeah, just people feel really
uncomfortable in this space. ♪ Grant: So we really want to be
able to help you. A lot of people are having
the experiences. You haven't had yours yet. Mm-hmm. But if we can take some time
and examine what's going on here and get to the bottom of it, I believe that will
give you some comfort. Yeah.
The building is yours, guys. We'll do our very best
for you, okay? It's an honor. Yep. Thank you very much. Thank you, Craig. Over the years, I've received
countless calls for help from people just terrified
at the possibility of the paranormal being there. The scariest thing in the world
is the unknown, so what you're trying to do is basically take this huge
cloud of uncertainty that they've filled
their head with and trim it down
to something they can process. It's about helping them
understand what's there and the reality of it rather
than what it was in their head. Mustafa: I started going online,
doing some research, and, as it turns out,
there were two people who are members
of the community who are very familiar
with this building and have spent
a lot of time in it, and they wrote an entire book
on Dr. Knabe. I want to know
about Dr. Knabe. What was her impact here
at Das Deutsche Haus? Michael:
She was a educator. She was a doctor,
and she taught here at the Normal College of the
North American Gymnast Union. She also, as a German immigrant,
of course, spent a lot of time
here in this building... ♪ ...and went to events and dances
and stuff like that as well. So it's safe to say that
she loved this place, right? Yeah. All right. And she was a member
of the community. She lived a couple blocks away. So October 24th, 1911,
her personal assistant, Katherine MacPherson, had picked
up some shoes at a local store, and then she went over
to Dr. Knabe's apartment a couple of blocks away. She went ahead
and went into her bedroom, and there she saw... [<i> Door opens, creaks</i> ] ...Dr. Knabe on the bed. She had had her throat slit. [<i> Slicing</i> ] And her nightgown
was pulled up. Her head was so far back
on the bed, it looked like
she had been decapitated, but she had been cut
very deeply twice, and her throat had bled out. She had the windows open, and there was no sign
of forced entry. So whoever committed this was
probably somebody that she knew, correct? That was the state's case, that
it was somebody that she knew. And who might that be? It took 2 years for a grand jury
to indict Dr. William B. Craig, and Craig
was charged with murder because they were supposed
to have been in a relationship, and it was his way
of getting rid of her. The trial only lasted for 9 days
because the judge thought, after 9 days,
there wasn't quite enough evidence connecting Dr. Craig
to the murder. You know, after she died,
she was actually seen here a couple weeks later
by someone in the building. [ Vehicle rumbles ] So people claimed that, in the weeks following
her death, that they actually saw her... Mm-hmm. ...Dr. Knabe,
here in the building? Yeah. Mustafa:
Learning these new details
about Dr. Knabe's death is absolutely shocking.
All right? I had no idea she met
such a gruesome end, and the fact that
she's been reported to have been on this site
is amazing. It gives us a lot to work with and a great starting point
for our investigation. ♪ Brandon: All right, guys.
Let's do this thing. ♪ Mustafa: It turns out that
there were sightings of Dr. Knabe weeks after
her death here on the premises, so I'm interested
in pursuing the possible thread
of Dr. Knabe. I couldn't agree more. We can hopefully get
to the bottom of it tonight. Yep. Absolutely. Mm-hmm. So let's do this. Brandon and Mustafa,
head up to the attic. Let's see if we can get
to the bottom of the creepy feelings up there. Let's say Brian,
Richel, and I, we need to hit

up here in grandma's attic, and we are going to do
a EMF sweep to see if there's high electromagnetic
fields in this place. If this area had high EMF, it could explain
some of these feelings of dread that people have have
been experiencing. So not really
any high EMF here. It can't be EMF. No. It's not EMF. We might as well do
an EVP session and see if there's

multiple verifications. Yep. That's the third time
we've done that. Mm-hmm. So Brandon and I are up here in grandma's attic,
and it seems like we established
contact with a woman. Since 1911, when Dr. Knabe
was murdered, people have reported seeing her
spirit here in the building. Now, what we're trying
to establish is whether or not she's the entity
that we're communicating with. Do you teach people
gymnastics here? We heard this was
a great center for physical fitness
and gymnastic. Brandon: That's a no. So in doing this EVP session,
we're not going to come out and ask if the possible entity
is Dr. Knabe. We don't want any
false positives, so we're going to use
a technique called control questions. We're going to ask
pointed questions just to make sure we're
not receiving random answers. Do you teach people
about health, maybe? [ Beeping ] Whoa. All right, dude, I'm getting
chills right now. So you -- you're a teacher? [ Beeping ] Is there a doctor present
here with us? [ Beeping ] Yep. Yes. [ Clicks tongue ] Man. What? What? I mean, we know that... I know. I know. I don't know how to approach
the history. I mean, we have to bring it up. Get on with it, dude. Look at this. I know, but what are we -- I mean, what I'm really worried
about right now is that the history
of this individual that we believe
we're addressing right now is a kind of grisly one, and I don't want
to be disrespectful to the entity by just,
like, bringing that up. [ Breathes sharply ] Well, we don't have to
bring that part up, but just you
talking to her... -Yeah.
-You know? I don't think we need
to bring it up. Do you try and communicate
with people in this building? Have you tried
communicating with Craig, or do you know of Craig? Brandon:
You know, I really think
that we were in contact with Dr. Knabe tonight. We had some great responses. When we asked if this was
a woman, we received a response. When we asked if it
was a man, we did not. We also learned that she was
a teacher and that she was
a health teacher. I think this is a really great
start to the night. ♪ Grant: This is Craig's office
right here. Richel: This is Brian, Grant, and Richel
up in the office space. The claims in here are
that Craig feels uncomfortable,
like he's being watched. Also, the assistant would see
a shadow figure pass by. I think we get someone there
in that corner right there, we would have the most ability
to have them come this way and this way. Both: Mm-hmm. ♪ You good to go? Richel: Yeah. All right. We're right here, Richel. Okay. ♪ My name's Richel. My friends Brian and Grant
are down in the office area. We just wanted to come and say
hi and try to talk to you. ♪ We have some equipment here
right next to me on the floor. If you get close to it

-Brian: Yeah. ♪ Grant: I'm going to go meet up
with Kristen and Daryl. ♪ Daryl: This is Daryl, Kristen,
and Grant in the theater. ♪ So the claims in the theater
are seeing a couple coming in hand-in-hand,
a couple dancing, and also leaving the theater. This couple appears so real that
workers that have worked here are yelling at them to get out, so I'm hoping we get something
on camera tonight with that. All right.

this data logger right where the experience

because there's a lovely couple that

any contact. We haven't got anything

that we think might be Dr. Knabe,
but we can't be sure. Daryl: What a night. But since then,

We got in that theater. I explained the equipment
very clearly. We had the data logger there,
right where the couple danced. We brought out
translation software. We were speaking English

to really have to step it up, but I have this big idea that I think will really help
draw out an intelligent entity, but it's going to require
all hands on deck, and it's unlike anything

night in grandma's attic. We established contact
with an entity we believe
could be Dr. Knabe. Is there a doctor present

slowed down dramatically, and when I woke up
this morning, I really didn't know where
the investigation stood, but, thankfully,
Grant gave the team a call, and he said that he has a big
idea planned for us tonight, and when Grant Wilson's
got an idea, let me tell you, that's cause
to be fricking excited. ♪ ♪ Grant: All right, guys.
Night two. Besides Brandon and Mustafa,
we got zero interaction. So I thought,
"You know what? If I'm an intelligent
entity here, what's really going
to get my attention?" This place was designed
to entertain, right? So what we need
is entertainment, so I've arranged
for a string quartet... Shut up. ...to come here tonight
and play in the theater. That's cool. Okay? When Grant told us that he was
getting a string quartet up there
in the auditorium, I was like, "Okay, this is different." I want us all in there. We can set the mood, but we're
going to hit it with equipment. Brandon: Mm-hmm. Brandon, start thinking about
how you want to arrange this. Oh, yeah. And let's see if we can get
some interaction. People just kind of get
in a rut when they investigate. They ask the same questions,
the same techniques, and, you know,

where the eyewitness has seen the shadow figure. So this is the most tech I've ever used in
one investigation run, and we're hoping that, once

is we're trying to create an environment
where they would dance. We're giving these entities
a gift. If they're here,

it was coming from up above me, and then that's why,
when you came running, I was like, "Oh, my God.
I can't be the only one." -Really?
-Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had no idea
you experienced anything. I was literally sitting there,
and I was like, "If I were to go and watch
this performance," like, I'm just -- I was -- You'd be up here! Yeah. That's what I was --
and I was -- That's why I was looking up here
the whole time. That's crazy. Up on the balcony,
there's a door that goes to the offices
where Craig's office is, and there's a railing
in front of that, and on the railing, something
moved quickly to the left, but, unbeknownst to me, Mustafa was hearing somebody
moving up there, which makes tons of sense. I mean, that's where we had
these reports of a shadow figure moving over there
and turning on the light. ♪ Hey, Grant.
I brought you a data logger. Oh, sweet. Let's do it here because this is
the only place it could have been. Mustafa:

-We might have video of it because we have a camera
on it. -Where was the camera?

hadn't been doing anything until they started playing

What was that? I -- dude, I just swear I just
saw somebody standing up there. Really? ♪ ♪ Daryl: The equipment hasn't
went back off yet, but I keep seeing
something up there. [ Classical waltz playing ] I just saw something. You saw it too? -Yeah.
-Okay. You saw it too. What, you guys seeing stuff? We're seeing something
up there again. It's right there. ♪ And, Grant, it looks like
a shadowy gray figure. It looks like a hand
grabbing the rail and going down the rail. -We've seen it several times.
-Okay. -We have a trap camera up there.
-Okay. So if there's anything
registering, we should be getting it. She saw it too, so... You both saw it
at the same time? We -- Yes. I was standing there, and I kept seeing something
by this one door. It was, like, a pulsating, like,
grayish form up there. I'm not sure what that was, but it kind of goes with
what everybody else is saying. They were seeing shadow figures. A couple of the other team
seen them as well going across the balcony

strange things happen. I think this has been a success. I think Brandon and Mustafa

with what might be this doctor. She was a big fan of the musical

a manifestation of a woman in gray. Here's an interesting thing. Yeah. In Europe, there's been
a phenomena that's been talked
about for forever. It's called gray ladies. They are apparitions of women that were murdered
by their lover. Dr. William B. Craig was
charged with murder because they were supposed
to have been in a relationship. ♪ All right, guys, it's been
a awesome night. Let's get the lights up. Let's get --
let's get out of here. [ Switches click,
electricity crackles ] Grant: So we just wrapped
the investigation here at the Athenaeum,
and what a ride. As a team, we took it
to the next level. Bringing in that string quartet,
it was a beautiful, wonderful, unique situation that will
remain a highlight of my career. It wasn't just pleasant.
It worked. We're happy.
We're excited. But it's only half over. Who knows what's lying
in the evidence review? ♪ Would you mind playing
that one again? Oh, there we go. Black shadow just walked
right this way. Are you serious? All right, dude,
I'm getting chills. So I am getting ready
to review evidence. ♪ A drop in temperature, what? Auditorium was
just spot-on last night. It really got intense there. We had a Spartan camera upstairs
shooting down the hallway. There it was again.
Trap camera is right there. Spartan camera was tripped
by something. We haven't had it happen yet. This is the first time. Let me see where that's pointed. But the really interesting thing
is the fact that you can hear what sounds like footsteps,
so I have to show this to Grant. That is amazing. ♪ Grant: Craig, it's good
to see you again. Mince: Good to
see you as well. Yes. So you reached out to us because
this is a job that you love. -Mm-hmm.
-But there's an aspect to it that you really didn't know
you were getting into. These stories you've heard
from people about activity
in the building is something
that's got you on edge. Definitely. So our main goal
was to figure out if there was activity in here. Mm-hmm. And if there was,
help you feel comfortable. So we had three
different teams out. Mm-hmm. Brandon and Mustafa were up
in grandma's attic, and they looked for
electromagnetic fields up there, which can make people
feel creeped out. It's pretty shielded up there. I didn't find anything out
of the ordinary with the EMF. So we decided to do
an EVP session. Yeah. And we had some pretty
interesting results we'd like to show you. <i> Is this a man or a woman
that we're speaking with?</i> If you're a woman,
can you make that go off? [ Beeps ] Just to be sure,
so you're a female? [ Beeps ] [ Gasps ] Now, what's interesting
about that, we even asked at one point,
"Are you a man?" It didn't go off. Now, these may seem
oddly specific, but we had a reason
for this line of questioning. Yeah, so at the time
we initially met with you, Craig, our researcher,
Mustafa, was looking into the history
of this building. Mm-hmm. And this is where things
get really interesting. Mustafa came across the story
of a female doctor who's reportedly been seen
in this building for over 100 years, and the woman
was named Dr. Knabe. Have you heard that name
before? Unh-unh. She was a very dynamic woman. She came over from Germany. She learned English
so she could go to school. Mm-hmm. And she loved this place. Uh-huh. And she would teach here. They found her a couple blocks
away in her apartment murdered, and, to this day,
no one knows who did it. ♪ ♪ Grant:
So, armed with the information Mustafa had gathered
about Dr. Knabe, he and Brandon asked
a series of questions to try to figure out if they
were in fact in communication with her up in grandma's
attic. Is there a doctor present
here with us? [ Beeps ]
-Yep. So we thought, "Holy cow.
This makes a lot of sense. This woman,
who loved this place, murdered in her prime, would absolutely be
reaching out, if anybody. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. She's smart. She's dynamic,
you know, and she was wronged. Mm-hmm. So day two, I started thinking
about the power of music. I mean, to me,
it's concentrated emotion. Mm-hmm. So we got a string quartet. We brought them in here, and we had them
specifically play German music, including waltz. [ Playing classical waltz ] These reports of this couple
coming in dancing, how are they
going to resist this? Yeah. So we kind of just lit
the whole place up, and hopefully we're going to be
able to document something during
this quartet playing. Yeah. So they're playing... Mm-hmm. ...and I noticed,
right outside your office door, it looked like something
was blocking the railing, and then it walked
to the left. I shot like a rocket,
and Mustafa took off after me, and he told me that he was
hearing noises from up there. There's no one here. Couldn't find anybody. As we come out there... ...Richel, our investigator,
was pointing. She was seeing shadows
and seeing figures up there, as well as
our investigator Brian. Mm-hmm. I'm sitting down here
on the first tier. I keep seeing movement up here. There's something that
keeps pacing in front of that door up there. I saw this pulsating gray
or white mass between the doorway
and this rail here. Wow. Now, what's really interesting
about what Daryl is saying here
is the grayish hue he saw, and there's a phenomena
that's been talked about by eyewitnesses
for hundreds of years called gray lady phenomena. Okay. These women that are
supposedly manifesting, these gray ladies,
are murdered by their lover. And so you have a history
of Dr. Knabe, you know, being murdered,
and there's speculation that it was a lover of hers that committed the crime. Wow. So while all of this
was going on, Brandon pointed out we had
a trap camera up there. Okay. This is one of those things
you put in the forest... Okay, yeah. ...and it doesn't record
until it detects something. But this is the very
first time since we've been
using these cameras that we got footage
without us in it. It only did that in the area
where we were seeing things. We also hear things. It sounds like someone is
standing right by the camera. Okay. So go ahead and play that. [<i> Static,
classical music playing</i> ] So you can see how it
starts out really dark. Dark. That gives me chills. So we were all just elated
with how that went, and Brandon and Mustafa,
who had originally made contact with this woman,
started to reach out. So let's just make
this clear again -- Are you Dr. Knabe? If you're --
Yes. It is. -That's cool, right?
-Resounding yes. That's pretty amazing. It's not random.
It is very deliberate. It's very, like,
answering the question. Mm-hmm.
Nothing to really be afraid of. It's just another person. The more human you see them as,
the better. Yeah. I mean, this building is
very aware of its history and very proud of it. All an entity is is someone
who actually is part of that history that you can
still interact with, which, to me, I think
you'd be eager to do. Yeah. And so anybody that
comes through here is probably coming
through here because they loved
the place. Definitely. And they want to enjoy it again. They want to watch a string
quartet play onstage. Mm-hmm. When you pass on, are you going
to go to the places that you hated
or the places that you loved? Yeah, you loved. One thing, suggestion
I would make is to try to continue
to reach out to Dr. Knabe. -Okay.
-I would suggest, if possible, finding a way to include... Yeah. ...her story in this
building a little. Yeah, definitely. Well, I'll tell you what. You'll be able to reach

a very tragic end, she came back to the place
that she felt like she was at her happiest. You know, what was this feeling
of dread and fear has now become this sense
of excitement and intrigue. Now I feel comforted
that there is somebody there. Grant: I think it's important,
whenever possible, to tell somebody's story. If somebody loved and was
instrumental to a location, they should be honored for that. Imagine what it would be like
to go to a place that you loved and supported and see
that they put up a monument or a display
in your honor. That, to me, is the ultimate
way to honor somebody. ♪
