Is this loss?
To add to this theory: notice the boss's defeat animations.
Galeem's different wings fly around in dissonance before shattering. Almost like the different branches of a company panicking as they realise they're about to go bankrupt. On the other hand, Dharkon makes one last attempt to grab the player, on last attempt to keep control of the characters, before giving up and collapsing. Almost like how toxic fandoms eventually die off if you don't give them what they want -- when the characters escape their grasp.
Also, note what happens to Dharkon in Galeem's bad ending. He falls apart and disappears. He isn't trapped or even fully destroyed. he just falls apart and leaves the characters to die. I feel like this is a stark warning from Sakurai to companies like EA who don't listen to their fans: "if you don't capitulate to some of the fans' demands, they will leave you to die."
Just my two cents, anyway!
I don't know why MatPat didn't talk about the lyrics of the main theme. It somewhat annoys me, honestly.
Colors weave into a spire of flame
Distant sparks call to a past still unnamed
Bear this torch against the cold of the night
The way I see it, it talks about all the different characters/spirits gathering to fight the Master Hand army at the beginning, just like in past games. Maybe even talking a bit about the Subspace Army. Remember: That happened before this game because of Galleom appearing as a boss, while many other bosses are spirits like Duon and Tabuu. Palutena also talks about it in her guidance about Mario. SUbspace is canon! This could also reference the ending cutscene.
Search your soul and reawaken the undying light
Reawaken your creativity and sense of fun.
On that day, when the sky fell away
Our world came to an end
Galeem's attack.
In our eyes, did a fading sun rise in the dark?
Glimmering shadows
Silence grows, in the spaces between
stretching out beyond time
Rising up, as a chorus of souls find a voice
flickering through the void
Dharkon, his realm and how he attacked Galeem, after we approached him the first time in the Light Realm. The voice might be Dharkon itself as a manifestation of toxicity, as Matpat said himself.
These little sparks, cling on to life,
everyone caught in the struggle,
And then the storms of change, they fan the flames
scattering ashes to the wind
The characters and spirits being caught in their fight. Galeem enslaving and turning everyone into trophies.
Every soul contains a whisper of light
gleaming faintly as it dwindles from sight
No escape, no greater fate to be made
In the end, the chains of time will not break
Everyone has at least a bit of creativity inside them. But adulthood puts a stop to the free flow of it.
As fate spins a thread without end,
new life draws its first breath,
Blossoming in a soil reclaimed from the past,
where destiny holds fast,
Literally : As long goes on, new (surges of) creativity come up, inspired by one's own past. Or in this case, the past Smash games.
Here where we stand, hand clenched in hand
everyone caught in the struggle,
This is the day we finally find our way
stepping into our tomorrow
Every soul contains a whisper of light
growing louder as it calls to unite
From the distance sings a chorus of souls
rising slowly, stirring heat from the coals
Story Mode and/or breaking free from the damned cycle that Matpat described in the video of what Galeem and Dharkon represent.
And the last verse
Light will guide you, on your way to the ultimate fight
The final fight. Or the light being the creativty fighting against the circumstances of life itself.
The Japanese lyrics are basically the same, just with less context...it feels.
This seems pretty spot on. Remember that bit in the Nintendo Direct with Sakurai saying βI wonder if Iβll ever get a break?β followed by a long pause? That was legit unsettling.
Smash Ultimate is incredible. We donβt deserve it.
It could also be interpreted that both Master Hand and Crazy Hand are like a kid playing with the toys (characters). By that, you can assume that everytime a kid plays (played) with his toys, he often "battles" one toy to another with both hands which means that both hands will always be against each other. You could even say that the Master Hand (since it's the 'right hand') its origin could have been caused by the fact that most people are right-handed, by that I mean, it's easier to make/organize stuff with the most comfortable hand while the other can be just a mess.
Anyways, in my opinion, I consider Galeem the 'childhood/fantasy' and Dharkon the 'future/reality' (since I'm talking about 'toys' and 'kids' as the main topics in this game). It might be weird for me to say this, but when Dharkon won and 'enchained' Galeem, I thought it would mean that the future/reality (becoming adult and having responsabilities) is trying to take over 'our' childhood/fantasy but we could never forget our childhood memories, so that's why it didn't destroy Galeem but instead chained it.
I guess these endings can be interpreted in many ways, but I'm just giving my opinion. I appreciate for those who understand me.ο»Ώ
My theories:
The spirits in Spirits Mode are the spirits of characters that were never bound by the divisive prison that is Smash.
Darkon specifically represents that which enabled fandoms to become toxic (and, depending on your definition of 'fandom', exist at all in the first place): the internet.
If someone does continue the Smash series after Sakurai, then depending on what direction the franchise takes from then on, one of the two bad endings will become the canon one.
Yo this video was deep af
This, I believe it. No matter how tragic it may seem, itβs more and more common nowadays for amazing developers to become drained and trapped in every single project theyβre forced to work on. They not only need to deal with their due dates, but also the fandom around them. I hope Sakurai takes it easy. We donβt need any more Smash titles. Appreciate what you got.
I have a radically different idea of what it may mean: this is basically the same as Citizen Kang. There are 2 sides, both equally bad, locked in conflict, and neither side should win. There may be some symbolism in having one side be "light" (Glaleem) and "creation" (Master Hand) and the other side be "darkness" (Dharkon) and "destruction" (Crazy Hand), but the message is clear: 2 opposites can both be equally bad. Voting for Kang is just as bad as voting for Kodos.
