welcome back to the outside Xbox and outside extra Game of the Year Roundup yesterday we had Luke extolling the virtues of Eldon ring and Ellen making the case for stray and now it's myself Mike and Jane's turn to tell you what game we loved most this year enjoy and let us know your pick for goty in the comments hi friends I wish I were here to talk to you about Elden ring but someone stole it so I guess I will talk about it and it's not to be honest but another game that I really really did enjoy this year had a really good time with is return to Monkey Island surprising absolutely no foreign [Music] to Monkey Island is the sixth game in the Monkey Island series the last one came out in 2009 that was Tales of Monkey Island which was an episodic Telltale thing so it's been a really long time since the last Monkey Island game 13 years um and those games I have a lot of nostalgic affection for I love them as a kid especially sort of the first to the third one in particular I really really loved um so I was looking forward to this game it was very kind of stealthily announced they only announced it like six months ago they went it was in April actually April 1st April Fool's Day they said there's a new Monkey Island Game and everyone oh very good Ron Gilbert you got us again and then he went no it's actually true it's already coming out so there wasn't a long to wait which is good because if they'd announced it several years ago I probably would have got excited and then sort of started to get less excited in the run-up but actually we're still in that that good sweet spot of excitement for the game when it came out and the good news was that it delivered on that excitement it was um a lot of was made before the game came out of the art style I think a lot of people were very resistant to the art style because it's got a very different art style to what we've had before we have the kind of pixel Graphics of the first one the very um uh sort of animated movie style of the third game and then sort of various attempts of 3D Graphics after that but this had a this game has a very sort of papercraft sort of aesthetic to it everyone looks like little paper dolls which is it takes a little getting used it reminds me a little bit of tear away something like that but um the animation I think is the is the real key to it everything is animated so smoothly and beautifully it's just incredibly Charming the backgrounds look gorgeous um I think any misgivings I may have had over the art style like vanish almost immediately oh sorry to see you in jail thank you son I appreciate the thought I'm sorry to see me here as well and it also it has a lot of the same voice cast as those original games and one thing in particular the music is very in keeping with those early games a lot of steel pans a lot of like Woodwinds it's very like laid back Caribbean kind of tropical I can just stick the soundtrack on and just relax it's great beautiful for that foreign I really enjoyed it's it's got a thing where it's got like a framing narrative with guy brush telling the story to his son which uh I thought was slightly unnecessary but it sort of only comes back to that every so often the main thing is that it has a story of you pursuing a treasure across all these various like wild and wonderful islands in the Caribbean which was very compelling very good um the main thing though is the puzzles obviously it's a puzzle game and uh that's where I think the game really shines it's pitched I think exactly right in terms of difficulty because it has puzzles that you don't solve instantly you know like well it's obviously this but also they don't take you forever to solve they'll take you the correct amount of time which is probably about 20 minutes where you think about it for 20 minutes and then you go yep I've got it and you go back and do it and it has it's very satisfying but it also has one of the best hint systems I've seen in this kind of game where if you do get stuck you can ask the game for a hint and the game knows what you've done up to this point it knows where you are and it knows what you're trying to solve because you tell it what the puzzle is and instead of saying you need to do this it gives you the the amount of a nudge that you need and most of the time it's like oh you yeah what you're trying to do is this it just makes you I think you can get stuck in a puzzle where you get sort of too close to it and you don't pull back and see the kind of big picture and the game does a really good job of telling you what it is you're trying to achieve um so for example uh that that was a puzzle I was trying to solve where I needed to make something like hot or spicy or fiery or something like that and it was like uh yeah no regular fire is going to do that and that was that was literally all I needed I was like okay so it's not regular fire so I need to find something that isn't that and then you're sort of your brain resets itself and you go oh right okay and it's it you don't feel like you've been told what to do or even had your hand held through it it's just like Narrows down what you should be thinking about which is just a really good way of running a hint system for a game so the puzzles were satisfying I really enjoyed the story again the ending I mean Monkey Island games are famous for not really being able to stick the landing when it comes to ending so you know it's kind of a tradition at this point and it really did feel towards the end like it was building to a different ending uh than the one we got but I mean it was still a really good tight like nine hours I think something like that it took me and I it was one of those games I don't get this very often where I've sort of put off playing it because I know it'll take me closer to having finished it so I'd like really really savor it as I went so I'm like it's gonna set aside I'll just play an hour now really just immerse myself in it take my time look at everything listen to everything talk to everyone and I haven't done that for a game for quite a long time so it was really nice to just sort of fully sink into this adventure for the the short amount of time it took to play it but yeah just a perfectly crafted little Adventure game I would recommend it to anyone I had a wonderful time with it Monkey Island return to almost as good as Elder ring the opposite of album ring he crafted yeah exactly it's an Elton ring is sick Ellen ring is 600 Happy Meals like dumped onto your front garden yes please like what am I gonna do with all this monkey ass face toys yeah Monkey Island is like here here's the amount of food that you want um but yeah return to mankiana good job uh Ron Gilbert [Music] each other [Music] all right as probably literally everyone else in this video has explained obviously the best game of the year is Elden ring but we can't all have Elden ring because that would be a make for a very boring video so I picked something else that I enjoyed and you're not allowed to tell me I didn't enjoy it because that's not how these things work but um yeah the game I'm picking is Gotham Knights thank you [Music] one of your jokes I like it serious I like it I know it didn't review terribly well considering the scale and the you know the presumed budget but I enjoyed it I think it's a good game I think it it sort of moves out of the shadow of the Arkham series which is a good thing it offers something new and uh yeah and I'm a bit of a sucker for the old Batman comics and it does a lot of Batman comic stuff I wish you the best of luck you'll be needing it soon because once the league regains its footing Gotham will be in its sights it's a lot like Baywatch nights [Music] uh it's considerably less sexy uh no it's so the thing about Gotham Knight is it's a um it's a very different feeling game from the Arkham series although the combat is is clearly inspired by the Arkham series hello it's actually what it reminds me of is the sort of more early Assassin's Creed games where you've just got a big city which is your playground you go out and do a lot of kind of more emergent um quests and objectives and things that kind of crop up and I'm a real sucker for Gotham City as a as a concept and there's a sort of particularly as an aesthetic and it's just endlessly pleasing to me to to kind of run around Gotham City again the traversal is really good A bit like the old Arkham games and you've got like a bat cycle to get around in [Music] foreign expecting I was expecting all that kind of freeform stuff but wasn't it I wasn't expecting was like a story that's actually really engaging and interesting and if you're a fan of the comic books really sort of satisfying well researching langstrom I also called up all we've got on our party Crusher Italia Al ghoul she was a match for master Bruce in more ways than one the game does a little bit of of everything really so it's got the kind of Arkham combat it's got the sort of grappling hook traversal that type of stuff but it's also got detective bits where you're being an actual detective those marks and uh you know story moments there's one bit where you're in the middle of a prison riot fighting people to a cover of living la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] which I think is like fun right that's fun well Batman's dead Andy so he can shut up good luck hey yeah I did does have numbers coming out of heads and I'm I'm I I don't tend to like that but at least for the the amount I've played a bit that doesn't get in the way in the way it does in a lot of games so it's not doesn't tend to be used as a way to kind of clobber you over the head as long as you're roughly keeping things ticking along you're gonna be okay okay but yeah so the concept of the game is that Batman is dead right and you know to be fair you you do get to see Batman in this for in this game but it's during a it's well it's just during a very long cutscene I'm a massive Rochelle ghoul which you are not allowed to do at all [Music] foreign [Laughter] [Laughter] yeah um but once you get through that and you've and you've eat your vegetables in terms of watching Batman get killed it's actually really fun because it's got these four Central characters right so there's Red Hood Nightwing Batgirl and Robin and there's a really cool moment at the beginning where they're having a conversation after Batman's funeral and you can kind of switch around and see the different perspectives and stuff and then you get to pick who you want to be in those missions you want to break into the gcpd headquarters for a what if be my guest I decrypted the case Batman sent with his message we should focus on that in terms of the storyline like it's it's written slightly differently depending on who you're playing so if you go and like meet Harley Quinn as Batgirl she's got like unique lines of dialogue that that relate to her well well [Music] isn't Brett kiss girls I got ice cream oh yeah that's definitely why I'm here and then there's also other little bits like there's kind of weapon crafting and customization there's quite a lot more RPG in it than there was I think in the in the Arkham games originally obviously if you compare it to to the best of the Arkham series it's it's gonna fall slightly short but I think it's better than I enjoy I'm enjoying it more than Arkham Knight I like Arkham Knight at all so there's that and I think it's something different right it's it's within the same sort of universe and it's it's but it's a very different game from Arkham I like that guess I'm heading to the gcpd morgue huh in golf them as they are it should be competitive ly yeah so uh you can go out on like nightly patrols and you can go and solve kind of it's a bit like remember the Spider-Man 2 game like way back in the day had these sort of like emergent crime missions that would just spring up around the city it's got that kind of vibe but then also you've got these bigger sort of story missions where for example you'll you'll be heading to Black gate prison and kind of work your way through the prison kind of stealthing around and there's a couple of approaches to do things you can like hack cameras or you can try and use your grapple to get around and things like that and then you'll have like mini bosses that have particular strategies you have to employ in terms of the combat [Music] a lot of money has been spent on this game and probably it hasn't you know it hasn't delivered on probably how much it cost but for me yeah someone who likes Batman and likes the kind of court of owls comic series that it borrows quite heavily from um and loves just traversing Gotham and heading around and looking at all the buildings and kind of climbing up them and stuff it scratches that itch for a kind of Batman fan and yeah it feels like a kind of comic book story it's nicely sort of extended out as a bit of a central mystery and there's lots and lots of just Canon characters and nods to the comics and and uh I yeah it's something different but I I really quite like it yes obviously let me remind you that the only other good game this year was Elden ring so long Mike it's Gran Turismo 7 f122 F1 manager and they also they want they want pictures uh okay it's okay he's going to explain himself in order granted by seven the economy was horribly broken to start with it has been fixed somewhat I love going towards my seven it's been fixed somewhat but I'm still never going to be able to afford the cars that I actually want to drive in that game that's why that's not getting in there f122 no hilariously overblown melodramatic story mode this year it's a great game but no I know Devin Butler to hate my favorite bit uh and uh F1 manager 20 to 22 good first effort but I think there's refinement there to be had all right you hear that now clear out yeah sorry about that Mike that's all right um but yeah I mean obviously [Laughter] really remonstrating with them I I must admit I considered I considered grandchild by seven but I think the thing about Gotham lights is it's trying something a bit different right there's a bat motorcycle as previously you can do wheelies on it's got It's got a dedicated wheelie button for the for the bat bicycle it's not basically it's a motorbike opposite [Laughter] Robin has big bicycle energy I must admit stop it he wanted us to work this together but yeah it's it's fun it I don't know if you like Batman and I do it's worth a look if you don't like Batman don't buy it please don't buy it yeah you get to watch him die in a protracted 15 minute long cut scene at the start of the game before you've even lifted a controller Gotham is their city now [Music] thank you [Music] foreign to my game of the year the year is 2022 and if you're watching this video I'm dead I'm dead I'm playing too much Marvel snap we found the lethal dose and it was how much Jane played in the latter half butter half latter quarter of 2022. um wait so so someone done someone's done Alden ring which is sorry obviously everyone's going let me just get this okay well now it's my turn to complain how I can't do welding ring because we're all acknowledging that Elden ring is Far and Away the game of the year in the year of all or 2022 where there were no games except for Elden ring and as I'm about to expound on Marvel snap which was and is a superlative little card game for your mobile telephone for your smartphone wind Aid my hand oh snap I think that's been key in this like last quarter of the year to why I've played it so very much is it's been an incredibly uh incredibly busy time but here's this game that lives in my pocket is always on hand and if you haven't played Marvel snap is made up of extremely short matches like you only play six turns in each of these Marvel snap games which means every match is incredibly short which makes it very satisfying and very easy to just like play one more game play one more game which is such a an enjoyable Loop of an enjoyable game so do I need to talk about like the basics do people need to know what it is people might not have played Marvels okay you tell them what it is if you haven't played Marvel snap it is a card game based on the characters of the Marvel Universe the Marvel Cinematic Universe cinematican actually the Marvel comic universe not like Batman like the other one I'm not going to engage with Andy because he's not being serious yeah can we get him out of the room bye so you know your x-man's and your Spider-Mans and your Avengers and you're Fantastic Four and you're fantastic sport yeah I do not know who devil dinosaur is but I love his card so thanks devil dinosaur um is that genuinely a superhero who's like a dinosaur but also a devil there's devil dinosaur does does he get more powerful according to how many cards you have in your hand is that one of his superheroes okay fine so some of them you'll be familiar with like and some of them you will be perhaps less familiar with unless you're a real Marvel Comics buff [Music] but the idea is you have as in all card games a hand of cards from a deck that you have built strategically and six turns to win two out of three lanes on the board and those lanes are really really important because those lanes are randomized each game they change with the kind of the season um of uh Marvel snap that you're playing and they're probably the most interesting variable in each match because they um they impose certain Like rules or timings or limits on on how you're going to play or they you know add add power to a card or subtract power to a card or cause the board to fill with Velociraptors you know that kind of thing um so I think part of the joy of Marvel snap is that kind of unpredictability like you know if you're playing Hearthstone you're going with the deck of cards you know the meta may be I'm gonna see these cards my opponent's probably gonna have these cards but the flavor added by having these three lanes defined by these like three Marvel themed but random locations with their own rule sets that change from season to season is really exciting and adds a kind of variety that will keep you playing [Music] Victory it doesn't feel paid to win you can pay but you don't need to I haven't spent any money on it yet and I don't feel like I've I've lost out I feel like I'm doing pretty well I think that's probably its best feature is that it makes me feel like I'm quite good at it which I'm probably not but there's enough kind of you know Flair and and Fanfare that makes me feel like I'm doing really well Victory when I first heard about Marvel snap it was through a quite aggressive YouTube marketing campaign and I was like you really made a card game for my phone based on snap um which everyone knows the card game snap right snap is already a card game um but that's not what snap means in the context of Marvel snap it is a reference to thanos's snap and um and when you snap it it doesn't kill like 50 of your cards what it does do is like raise the stakes it's like a poker steak raising mechanic and if you feel like you're in with a really good shot of winning you snap maybe your opponent snaps back because they feel like they're in a good position to win and then it means by the end of the match you stand to lose or gain like eight power cubes instead of I guess it's is it one or two if no one snaps yeah yeah I always use it retaliatory if someone snaps at me I instantly so for Andy's mind games I find though that no one ever backs down because they're like oh I'm afraid to lose everyone's like it's it's so easy to people really okay I'm not playing enough Mind Games clearly I'm not I'm not posturing with enough hostility to make people back down when I snap they're always like okay [Music] what's the best card you've got the best best card Jessica Jones is good um but that's me answering with my head my heart says I like I like Carnage because he eats the other cards that is good and gets powerful and if you've if you've planned your deck strategically you can have other cards that react to being um destroyed or cards that like swoop in when other cards are destroyed so you can kind of get a lot of synergy out of Carnage I find and also it's fun to destroy cards oh that's the other thing Marvel snap is very much not about like um it's not framed as like fighting directly per se if you were to compare it to Hearthstone I think Hearthstone has more of a Vibe of like combat and like it's your cards fighting my cards whereas there's very little interaction well there's comparatively little interaction in Marvel snap where it's like your guys fighting there guys you know it's not about kind of killing the other characters it's collaborate time Jubilee's good for a bit of Randomness and also Jubilee is my favorite X-Men so I like how she's very expensive has very little power but will out of nowhere just play a random I think four cost card and it might be brilliant and save your game or it might it might be laughable and terrible but I enjoy that Randomness I I kind of like the lucky dip cards where you get something out of nowhere and you're like this might turn the tide or uh it might screw me over completely 3D so if it's a bit weird that my game of the year is a mobile game then that's uh an indictment of 2022 and how Elton ring was good Monkey Island was good I haven't played clista protocol yet uh on a kind of being busy which as I said earlier is why Marvel snap is my game of the year because it's the game that's been living in my pocket and that I can play while also watching something on television because that's that's how I Live Now watch the big screen while playing on the little screen I enjoy it either yeah I work all day on the medium-sized screen so in the evening I can watch the big screen while playing on the little screen 2022 next time I'll try to break a sweat oh snap
