alright back in the astrodome Tommy Hutton along with Ken singleton for Game two of this sport game set against the Houston Astros umpires for the ball game tonight Joe West will be behind the plate veteran Doug Harvey the crew chief is at first base Frank pulli out at second Derek Gregg is handling the chores over at third base some teams play better indoors and the teams play better out of doors plus I think also the Astros have geared their clubs over the years to play in the Astrodome they've always had some speedy runners guys who hit the ball in the gaps make good contact not necessarily power hitters and that's why they've had success but they haven't had recent success in the Astrodome is Mike Scott their pitcher starts to warm up the Astros have lost seven in a row in the dome so they've had their trouble inside Mike Scott a right-hander will be facing this lineup for the Montreal Expos Tim Raines in the leadoff spot Vance law at second base Dawson and right field Dan Driessen will hit cleanup play at first base you'll be Brooks the shortstop he leads all shortstops in the National League with RBIs Tim Wallach at third base Mitchell Dean Webster from great bends Kansas is in centerfield Mike Fitzgerald a catcher Mickey mailer on the mound Mike's got a good hard drawer with an excellent split finger fastball take a look at Mike Scott he is pencil in as the force started in this rotation of the Astros basically with Nolan Ryan and Bob Knepper he's come along and Joe Niekro also he's come along they're looking for that Forest Park horse starter I should say they've had pretty good success with the other three pitchers and Mike Scott is penciled in to do the job he's come up with that split finger fastball that you mentioned Tommy and that's the thing that's really helped him out he's pitched a lot better this season than he has in the past he's got a a winning record this year six and four and he's been doing a fine job in that four spot in the rotation that's an interesting way that he learned that split finger fastball he had a disappointing season last year for Houston 5 and 11 for 68 earned run average and over the winter Scott who resides in the Arizona area decided he'd go seek out split finger fastball guru Roger Craig who was pitching coach with the Detroit Tigers and many of the tiger pitchers throw that pitching he took a trip to San Diego where Roger Craig lives spent about a week there and Roger taught him the pitch he went to spring training and worked on it and all of a sudden he's found himself in the rotation and pitching well thirty years of age and sometimes pitchers don't reach their peak till they're about that age Timmy rein stepping in leadoff man for the Expos first pitch of the ballgame there it is brain sends it high to left-center centerfielder Kevin bass easy chance one down to be arranged wasting no time jumping on the first pitch of the ballgame Mike Scott one out further into the ballgame another interesting thing about Scott as well as that split finger fastball he throws his normal fastball in the high 80s low 90s oh he's a consistent hard thrower Vance law the hitter advanced with a big base hit in Game one of this series there's a strike from Scott called by home plate umpire Joe West 6:3 215 pounds fouled back like that one hung a little bit wasn't aware that Mike's got through that hard if it seemed to me that had a medium fastball it's a 85 miles an hour but I found out today he's up in the low nineties at times and might see him get a few strikeouts tough situation went into the low 90s you're not the hardest thrower on the staff but far nolan ryan gets it up there mid-90s times high 90s there's the O to pitch it well down the left-field corner Vance law will get extra bases on in the second base a stand-up double is Vance law hit a no to pitch right on the nose down into the left-field corner expanses 14th double on the earrin van said that big double and an RBI and the twelfth inning of Game one the drive home the go-ahead run so Vance law on at second base with one down Andre Dawson will be the hitter the hawk only needs four more hits to tie Gary Carter for the all-time Expos lead at 1365 he's got a milestone coming up he's also got a man at second with one out Scott works and it's up high ball one one and O to the hawk when you're inside here at the Astrodome you get that theater atmosphere it's not the same as being outside you feel as though you're watching a movie almost but ready to go get some popcorn there's 100 way inside it hits Dawson Andre checking his hand the way he's going about that check it's not out too severe but anytime a player gets it with a guy who throws in the 90s you have to worry about it fastball up and in trying to move Dawson off the plate a little and he's already been hit once seriously this year and I'm sure everybody's concerned anytime they come inside first base coach Ron Hansen Seahawk pointing towards the his wrist and on the wrist area by the batting glove course Andre hit early in the year by Bobby Castillo in Dodger Stadium fast ball that glanced off his elbow hit just below his eye and Andre missed three ball games and Reese in the hitter it's the opportunity to drive home some runs looked like that split finger pitch you saw it tail off just as it reached the plate get your mark Bailey reaching for it as it hit it outside here's a 100 pitch to Driessen a line shot to Dorn and they double up van slaw at second base so a line shot by Dan Driessen van slaw did a couple of steps once he committed himself that was it Bill Doran alertly doubled him off at second base so that's all for the Expos in the first inning no runs they had a base hit no errors one runner left after a happy new play in Houston the Expos nothing the Astros coming up this is Expo baseball on TSN [Music] back at the Astrodome Tommy Hutton with Ken singleton bringing you this game between the Expos and the Houston Astros game two of before game set man the beginning of a long road chip for the Expos they'll play four in Houston then go on to Atlanta for three games and then just before the all-star break comes upon us they'll be playing four games against the Cincinnati Reds Mickey Mailer on the mound he'll be facing this lineup that Bobby Lewis manager of the Astros has made out Bill Doran will be in the leadoff spot the Astros have four switch hitters in the lineup Doran is one of them venus Cobell playing at first base Phil garner the third baseman josé Cruz sitting in the cleanup spot another switch hitter Jerry mumphrey in right field Kevin bass a switch hitter mark Bailey the catcher a switch hitter Dickey thon in the lineup at shortstop Scott on the mound as his Mickey Mahler as he begins his warm-up tosses Mickey Miller in order to be successful tonight he has to get that slow curve ball over the plate changes speeds on he has a harder curve and a slow curve it's not really a hard throw he doesn't strike out too many but he's been successful this year by having good control of his pitches changeup occasionally the throw goes down to second base and we're almost ready for action here in the bottom half of the first inning well Mickey's last start was a 62 loss against the Phillies he went 5 innings gave up 6 hits couple of runs walked bare had 2 strikeouts prior to that a little bit of bursitis in his left shoulder he slept on the shoulder long position thinking everybody that's watching this game has done that one time or another but if you're not a big league pitcher it doesn't matter usually go to work Mickey slip on it the wrong way and missed a start and then came back into that game against the Phillies leadoff man Bill Doran steps in fastball just low that's a strike Joe West with a late call see if Kenner I slept on our shoulder the wrong way we'd still be right here [Music] get high in the air down the right-field line and it lands right on the chalk line great Dawson who was playing over in right-center couldn't get the ball not here Dornan gets himself the craic lands on a second basis he hits one right on the chalk line pop running to his left towards the line I watched a poof right there looks like one of my golf balls going into a sand trap so Houston gets their leadoff man in scoring position with nobody out Nina's Cobell a player who has good back control his job to try to move Dorn over to third he is a very tough man to strikeout he does make contact and that's the type of hitter you would like to have up in the second position of your lineup and he'll either elect to bunt or he'll try to hit the ball to the right side he can do that might look for a Mickey to try and keep the ball in on it or slow breaking ball to try and get him to pull it while back on that's first bitching it was a fastball strike one old one-two Cobell [Music] maelard crosshair that start against the san francisco giants that we had on TSN earlier in the season one-hit shutout one-hit shutout of the Giants and that day he got his curveball over consistently he sure did Mickey called up on May 29th through the year he's only given up 24 hits in 34 innings pitch he's been difficult to hit this year so far with bluff nobody was actually covering second just right trying to hold Doran close maybe make them shorten up his lead a little bit there's that off-speed pitch chopped out in front of the plate you called it - that's a tough pitch if you're trying to hit the ball for a right-hander to the right side you get that off-speed pitch you're usually out front of it it's hard to hit the other way just by faking door and back at second base it might make him shorten up his lead just a bit and that might be the difference him getting thrown out at home plate on a throw from the outfield now Doran has good speed he's stolen 15 bases now with a no to pizza see what Cavell does another slow curveball Chomper to Brooks but it did the job Bill Doran went over to third base and eNOS Cobell veteran get the job done so even though he didn't hit it to the right side he hit a chopper that was slowing up and alert runner like Dorn is was still able to move over the third a scrappy little Phil garner will step in Expo infield playing back but sometimes they will move in we've seen that happen many times as the pitcher goes to the plate Garner's been very tough in situations just disease over the past seven years he has driven in thrown a third not in time close play like you try them all as I was saying about Garner he's been tough in situations just as these in the last seven years he's driven in 64 percent of the runners third base with less than two outs he's a battler up there he's another good contact man he's not going to strike out too often big curveball up high ball 1 1 a no to garner and with malar not really being a strikeout type pitcher the only thing that might keep this run from scoring is a ground ball a third or maybe the first for a short fly ball filed off to the right counts even to Phil garner one and one one away bottom of the first inning no score Astros have Bill Doran on at third base Mickey Miller the left-hander on the mound Nikki 32 years old six three hundred ninety fifth start of the year for the Expos just missing inside with that fastball two and one darkness hit safely in six of his last nine ball games are the 3:13 clip he's been relatively hot over a little over a week now and as you saw an all-star in both leaks once with Oakland remember the Pirates foul strike two two two [Music] [Applause] lifetime against the Houston Astros Vicki mailer is to [Applause] there's a good curveball garner chased it didn't get it that's a good pitch by Mickey Miller when he starts getting that breaking ball over he stuff so a big strikeout for Mahler and Doran is still a third [Music] you see it another slow curveball this time it is actually out of the strike zone and garnish chases he's out of there a tough man to strikeout big strikeout for Mickey Miller now there's two down and another tough hitter up there you got that at the curveball fouled at the plate oh and one Jose Cruz and a curveball just kept biting josè one of the most underrated players not only internationally but I think in all of baseball he's been hitting year in and year out for a long time and he's consistent he's tied with former Astro Bob Watson who played for quite a few teams with 782 RBIs as members of the Houston Astros we'd like to go ahead a bob with one right here Doran was bluffing down the line and wisely Mickey stepped back off [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it looked like the slider on the outside corner Owen - so Mickey Mailer ahead of Cruz nothing into last July 1984 Cruz hit 443 for the month of July that was the highest average for any nationally player in any month in the season past that is smokin outside of that curveball 1 & 2 Jose missed about 3 weeks of the season not too long ago he was out with a dislocated fourth toe and it doesn't sound that serious but it created a lot of problems for him running and he's still not 100% when he's running dirt ball hit well the grease he tried to backhand it and couldn't come up with it in the right field Dorn comes in to score the Astros take a 1 nothing let's a base hit an RBI on that now puts those eight crews ahead of Bob Watson as the all-time RBI leader with 700 to 83 jose cruz dig a nice round of applause when the crowd here seduced [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] now we've seen Greece and by the way make a lot of those backhanded plays and it looked like the ball just stayed down on it he had a shot at look though he should have had it Jerry mumphrey with his four home runs he's a switch-hitter also but he's hit all four of them left-handed factus last right-handed home run was July 29th 1983 against Jerry Koosman it's been a while since he's connected for power from the right hand side when he was with the Yankees that was one of his problems he didn't get along with Billy Martin one of the reasons he didn't because Martin would bench him against left-handed pitching that happened earlier in the year here in Houston he was not playing against left-handers Tim Wallach with the force at second base Jose Cruz and that's all for the Astros in the first thing but they no base hits no errors one runner left one inning has gone by here in the dome and the Astros have a 1 to nothing lead over the Expos this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Applause] in Houston the Astros have a 1 to nothing lead as we go to the 2nd inning Astro defense has Cruz bass and mumphrey in the outfield garner thawne Dorn Cobell around the infield Mike Scott on the mound and Mark Bailey the young catcher behind the plate for the Expos it will be Brooks Wallach and Webster and face 30 year-old right-hander Mike Scott the Mike Scott has made a 129 starts in the big leagues in that period of time he has only completed six of those games so here's a man who usually doesn't finish what he starts and that's the lowest percentage for any starting pitcher with over a hundred starts in the big leagues Wow he started 17 this year and has just one complete game outside a hubie ball one Jimmy Brooks with big night in the first game of this series it's this one up in the air of centerfielder Kevin bass should have it when it comes down one away what's that old saying five and fly and is it six since ago it's eight and skate tim wallach drilled his fifth home run in Game one a shot to straightaway centerfield Tim with five home runs and he's swinging a good bat breaking ball is outside one and Oh last sixty three at-bats Tim sit right around 350 I like the way Tim gets that bat going seems like as a hitter you have to have something when you're awaiting a pitch to get yourself going a little movement you very rarely see a hitter stand up there just still it's like a timing mechanism just to get your hands started get the bat started it always stopped it once you get it going but you got to get it started it hit some of these fast balls there he is a little bit of movement there it goes bow back to and to back that home run that he hit last night the dead central you don't see too many home runs hit in the Astrodome in centerfield Paul does not carry well here I heard a great pitchers theory on why the ball carried so well in Game one of this series let you have it right after this good fastball that was the 99 that's a strikeout for Mike Scott I got number one take a look at a high fastball high in the strike zone and that's the way a lot of the pitchers internationally like to pitch to Tim watch Mike to keep the fastball up above the belt or about at the belt and that's strike three that's where he wants to get it here's Mitch Webster that theory about the ball carrying so well Joe Niekro was talking to Joe Niekro before the ball game pitch inside the Webster and he said that because the Astros had been on a road trip they mess around with the air conditioner in here so they change it when the team comes back and usually the first day in the ball carries well now that's a pitcher tough call strike to Mitch one-on-one it's always something well he said put me in coach there he is it's trying to bunt his way aboard and he does a good job it was a tough play for Bill Doran his only chance was to barehanded as he tried and he couldn't come up with so that'll be a bunt single for Mitch Webster ball bounces high off the astroturf in front of home plate fact it probably hit home plate bounces over Scott's head dorrance only play as the barehanded Webster has excellent speed can't make the play infield bunt single for Mitch Webster after two home runs last night goes up their funding had everybody moved back haha I'll tell you I bet he had some proud parents at the ball game after hitting those two home runs right Fitzgerald in there and Webster's on the move and so Mitch Webster after showing us power in Game one showing some speed here in Game two and that's an interesting stolen base because I was just going to say Ken that to punt with two outs sometimes isn't that great of an idea unless you can get on and steal second to get yourself in scoring position with two down and he does just that and the play isn't even close Mitch Webster sewing some of his abilities there's got two stolen bases now in two tries with the Expos Mike Fitzgerald gets an opportunity to bring home a run one and one after that high fastball two outs top of the second well we will see it Fitzgerald gets that opportunity Mickey mailers on deck sometimes those 8th place hitters don't get much to hit in situations just like this perils of hitting eighth Mike hits it well but Phil garner that fire was a good play good play by a Phil garner on a shot off the bat of Mike Fitzgerald that ends it in the second inning for the Expos no runs they had a base hit a bunt single by Mitch Webster no Astro errors one runner left after an inning and a half the Houston Astros won the Macchio Expos nothing this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Music] the x-bow defense has Timmy rains Mitch Webster Andre Dawson in the outfield Wallach Brooks law and Driessen in the infield Mickey Mailer on the mound Mike Fitzgerald behind the plate I'm Tommy Hutton along with Ken singleton and we're up here the booth yesterday scoreboard Thursday scoreboard in the National League Philadelphia winners over Cincinnati a three hitter by Kevin gross and the San Francisco Giants defeating Chicago Chicago had a three-run lead st. Louis over los angeles joaquin andujar getting his 14th win of the year San Diego blowing away Pittsburgh in front of just 10,000 people on a holiday in the United States and look at that New York Atlanta game we're going to get into that a little bit more 16 to 13 19 innings and of course there's the expo Houston score 19 innings in Atlanta the game was played in six hours and ten minutes that's the longest ever for a major league baseball game and it was fireworks night in Atlanta do you know what they waited until 4 o'clock in the morning when the game was completed and they shot off the fireworks at 4 a.m. and there was some interesting plays that took place two times Tom Gorman left-handed pitcher formerly with the Expos had two out and two strikes on hitters to shut the door win the game and twice there were home runs hit once by a pitcher brick camp hit his first major league home run and again by Terry Harper it was a wild game in Atlanta Evan bass the hitter fouls off the first pitch into the seats Gary Carter in that game scored the winning run in the 19th inning at four o'clock in the morning there were a couple of rain delays at the onset of the ball game that one of the reason that it lasted so long and Carter looked a little we saw a clip of the Carter looked a little weary rounding third and scoring and I guess the reason is because he caught all 19 innings what he feels like today it's always the day after then really affects you Sheila's fireworks woke up a few milkman No good curveball four o'clock in the morning imagine stepping out your door to ready to go to work picking up the morning paper and see fireworks can at this date there's the fireworks right there bass hits it I shot that just snuck over the fence maiden fair face up Priory Craig give me a call the bass picking up home run of the year switch hitting centerfield they're showing some pop Lions one over the fence 330 feet away right down the left-field line [Applause] I'll hit down the line or down the chalk as the players like to call it say it's the shortest route to paradise mark Bailey will step in another switch hitter of the for switch hitters that are in the lineup Bailey has had the most success from the right side he pops this one up and grease it makes the play one away course I'm saying that he has had the best success just after Kevin bass a switch-hitter it's one out of here in a hurry but the Astros lead a two to nothing a run in the first and one right here in the second Dickey thon takes a strike on the inside corner well as everyone knows the tough comeback the Dickey thon is trying to make he's big platoon now with Craig Reynolds now on a right-handed hitter at Reynolds a left-handed batter and Dickey just seeing action off lefties [Music] here you see him batting in the eighth position tonight in front of the pitcher when he was going well before the injury he's batting third shallow flyball to left field a long way to go for rains he's got it boy I can't buy Timmy rains way to go very quick right on top of Timmy to see that he made the catch [Applause] two outs on a great play by Tim Raines [Applause] didn't appear that rains got a good jump on this ball but of course he has the great speed and you can see the end result comes up with a spectacular diving catch Tim range fighting the Durst dirt out there maybe in a place where L Campbell has on occasion girl usually took somebody down with him Mike's God takes it outside ball one Scott has four hits on the air hitting 138 one of those hits a double Baelor works fouled off in the count one and two two away bottom of the second inning two runs three hits no errors for Houston no runs two hits no errors for the expo [Applause] one two curveball that's all for Mike Scott that got number two for Micky mailer but the Houston Astros come up with a run in the second inning line drive home run by Kevin bass his eighth home run of the year and his 27th RBI so in the second for Houston one run one hit no errors nobody left after two the Astros to Joaquin doesn't always switch hit it doesn't always hit left-handed off a right-handed pitcher he has he picks his spots I wonder why that it we gotta ask him about that well he feels he has more power right here there's a strike to Baylor so if he's up there in a situation where he's thinking home run he goes up there right-handed it doesn't matter who's pitching how come he swing so hard left-handed a well that's just his nature pop back County was do it too [Applause] another switch hitting pitcher that used to be the answer still is the answer but we've given it away now to a good trivia question Oh chopper to the right side the Bell puts Scott one down question used to be who was the last switch-hitter to win the MVP and of course everybody starts thinking of hitters when in fact it was by tableau it approved so now that we've given you a great trivia question so go tell all your friends and make a bet with a little change of course everybody's gonna say Mickey Mantle and you got him it's by two blue what year was that was at 72 I believe or 70 71 yeah he's 71 cadet Timmy Raines going to the plate Timmy old for one flied to Center in the first inning and Tim's had a lot better success from the left side we've talked about the Astro switch hitters and he has some success right here lion shot two sooner bass over four and Ray with excellent speed on in a second so not many guys get a double auto off of wall hit there when you have speed of a Timmy rains Timmy now with 10 doubles Timmy's speeding the feeling out you saw it on the basis when he hit first new he's headed for 2 just turn on it on the gas so to speak Simmi with ten doubles now eight triples that's law one-for-one doubled in the first inning [Applause] that's now hitting 241 Savage has been on the rise he's been making a lot better contact lately especially batting in the number two position behind Timmy Raines this is an opportunity to spray the ball around he chases that high pitch count evens one and one bats has a good eye at the plate he has been hot as you said at last 22 games his on-base average is close to 400 myk's God originally with the New York Mets number to pick of the Mets back in June of 1976 couple of looks at rains fastball back to when you have a runner on at second that has the speed of a Tim Raines it's Coleman or Willie McGee picture has to look more than once you get in a pattern or a routine you just come set look once go to the plate be soon you'll look back there and the runner it'll be a third now he steps off to me range dancing around a little bit trying to and three looks from Mike Scott and what if Timmy range does it divides the pitchers attention makes a little easier in the hitters from time to time [Applause] slaw with some good Pete and Vance chased it strikeout number two for sky expos point good baseball [Music] last year after 78 games Montreal was 38 and 42 games under 500 here in 1985 after 78 games 45 and 33 twelve games over 500 there's some heat begins he it's a strike to Dawson you can bet that Andre remembers he got hit by a pitch with a face open his first time up hitters have long memories when it comes to being hit by pitches and who did it and when situations one breaking ball way outside one and one to Dawson top of the third inning two to nothing Astros lead the Expos [Music] here's the 1:1 high fastball Dawson hits it off the end of the bat and it's a blue base hit into center field around third comes reigns Timmy will score and Andre Dawson goes on into second base with a bloop double an RBI for the hawk he now has 38 ribbies on the ear and that's Andres 15th double the Expos closing the lead by one Astros now lead at two to one Timmy Raines scoring his 31st run in his last 31 ballgame so he's averaging a run a game [Applause] dan Driessen looks at a pitch inside ball one timmi range now has scored 54 runs just ahead of Tim Dale Murphy with 56 Vince Coleman has 55 so a good race going in the run scored the partner all strike on the outside corner one and one to Driessen Dan hit the ball well in the first inning a line drive right to the second baseman Bill Doran who turned into a double play there comes a 1-1 pitch ball two 2 and 1/2 Greeson notice that Driessen has choked up just a bit on the back just about a half an inch from the bottom usually power hitters like Driessen like the drop-down right to the very end if he's going for a little bit more back control has picked up a heavier bat maybe choked up just a little see if it works tried to hold up the couldn't break 2 2 & 2 tough pitch delay on high fastball scott has thrown a number of those think he has the hitters thinking of that split finger fastball that's gonna come down into the strike zone and he's not coming in with him he's throwing the high fastball another high fastball this one popped up Phil garner Andre Dawson with two-step garner as he makes the catch and that's it for the expose in the third they come up with a run on two hits couple of doubles one by rains one by Dawson no Astro eros one runner left after two and a half Houston to Montreal one this is Expo baseball on TSN the calling O'Keefe sports game star for the Expos will receive for her the lady Remington rechargeable shaver and for him the Remington rechargeable micro screen saver the cordless rechargeable shaver that shaves as close as a blade or you get your money back so Ken singleton and myself will be picking in an expo game star as this game continues as we look at Thursday scoreboard in the American League Britt burns shutout Cleveland and Bert Blyleven in Cleveland Baltimore over Kansas City by two California keeps on top in the American League West by defeating Boston by a run Ron Guidry winning his ninth straight game 3 to 2 over Minnesota Texas 4 to 1 over Detroit Seattle 7 1 over Milwaukee an Oakland nip the Blue Jays by one that was an interesting third run that Oakland scored it was by former driven in by former Blue Jay Dave Collins off bill Caudill two men involved in that big deal last year Dornan Cobell and garner to bat for the Astros bottom of the third Nikki mailer works outside to Dorne ball one Dornan doubled in the first inning a bloop double hit hit the chalk down the right-field line this one about three-quarters and that would look like he wanted to hold up an advanced law made the play sometimes you get a pitch and your head says swing but your arms say they don't that's probably one of the there's a lot of things in the game of baseball that can frustrate a player but that would be one of them to want to hold up on a swing and you can't and then you hit the ball in fair territory you know what used to frustrate me more than anything else in baseball is that third strike when you foul tip it in the catcher hold on to it yeah you look back if you look back hopefully you want to see it on the ground but it's rightness below there's a slow curveball and a good one strike one to Cavell [Music] felt like ripping the glove right off the catcher's hand talking about that New York met Atlanta game white Gooden started there's a good pitch ball strike two Gooden started for the Mets in Vicki mailers brother Rick mailer started for Atlanta but due to the early rain delays they didn't last that long they were long gone before that came was over six hours 10 minutes ended at 4 o'clock in the morning you know some teams have a rule that pitchers when they leave a ballgame they have to stay at the ballpark until the end of the game just foul in the cattle stay 1 & 2 to Capel I wonder if that rule applied to Dwight Gooden and Baylor [Music] I would have to think somewhere around with one or two in the morning that baby Johnson and Eddie Haas managers of the Mets and the Braves would say fellas all right you've had enough you can go on home over it's hard to catch a cab that time of night - of course I wouldn't know good fastball is fouled off and count remains 1 & 2 dienes Cabella [Applause] Niska bells been around is a good steady veteran 35 years old so with the Tigers for a couple of years he said some good years with the Houston Astros he began his career with the Baltimore Orioles he was involved in a trade that you were telling me about earlier he got traded for LeMay back in the winter of 74 and I remember talking to Mike Torrez the day that that trade came about and I said well that's gonna make the Orioles very tough you know getting a power hitter like LeMay next day Mike Torrez myself are nowhere to Baltimore [Music] he's a good fielder and he thought he should have had that and after the ball went by him you can see Mickey Mahler slapping his glove and disgust he wanted to have that way they sit for Cobell another slow curveball he got the bail out in the first inning on a small hook and it just glanced off mailers glove caught in a center field for a base hit and you can see the reaction to Mickey look at that doc gone I should have had that [Applause] the ass shows now four hits Expos have four hits Houston to expose one we're in the bottom of the third [Applause] now Mick you bear down try to get Phil garner curveball is low good play by Fitzgerald Minooka Bell is 35 years old and still runs pretty well stolen three out of four this year funny how when you look at some of the pics that teams have and they go on and sign with other ball clubs [Applause] don't think an eighth round draft pick will get too much play changeup and Barnard hits it hard but foul [Applause] and that's a thing a will do every now and then throw that changeup and it doesn't care if the hitter hits it hard long as it's foul just a loud strike the bell returns at first a hit and run was odd about ready to mention at the get back control and the belt was still a pretty good speed and only one down good opportunity for the hit and run couple of veterans fouled out of play and against one and two to garner [Applause] Phil garner was with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1979 the world champion pirates well what he here he had that year in the in the World Series 500 hitter so L 12 hits in 24 at-bats don't remind me seemed like every time he came up he was he ended up at first second or third and then scoring a run at four doubles five RBIs so he had quite a series in 1979 hit 500 and didn't get both Bible play in the series he hits this one well the left field jover gets it on the high hop and makes a good play to get it in in a hurry too long single though by Tim Raines feel that shot over hi and get it back in quickly because garner was thinking about going the second [Music] [Applause] [Music] that play kept the double play in order with Jose Cruz coming to the plate Lata left fielders would have thrown that ball on the 3rd garner would have continued on the second yet minute runners at second and third one out still a double play opportunity with Cruz at the plate sliders outside want to know cruz singled in the first inning at an RBI in at RBI put him in the lead as far as Houston Astros are concerned for a career 783 career RBIs as an astro [Applause] ball missing all three veterans coming up in a row we mentioned cabel's age 35 bill Garner's 36 years old and jose cruz is 37 [Applause] he'll pitch a high flyball to left field tagging a third will be Cobell reigns makes the catch the throw to the plate in time miss Cavell moving on to second base Phil garner heads-up baserunning by garner to see the control plate he gets himself in the scoring position and here early in the ballgame the Astros have scored a run in inning one in the first one in the second and one here in the third they laid three to one in her a thrill came all the way home and it went over the cutoff man tim wallach garna with the heads-up baserunning tagging and moving on a second getting into scoring position now feelers standpoint he liked to keep the thrill cuttable you can't get the man of the plate you do not want the man from first advancing what you try to do if you want to make that heart throw at least keep it about head high that way the runner has to hold his ground not a good fastball Oh to Jerry mumphrey Yuson with three runs five hits no errors the Expos have a run on four hits and no errors Oh - fits - luckily a high fastball he chased it didn't get it strike three strike out number three from Mickey that's all for the Astros in the third inning they get a run on two base hits there were no Expo errors in one runner left on base after three complete innings in the Astrodome the Houston Astros lead the Expos three two one this is Expo Baseball on TSN and now let's go to TSN control for this sports break with Michael Landsberg [Music] that was [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well we go to the fourth inning with the Astros leading the Expos three to one in indoor baseball houston astrodome this telecast is protected by copyright and is attended solely for the non-commercial entertainment of our viewing audience at a used reproduction or distribution in whole or in part of the pictures or description seiran contained without the express written consent of the Montreal Expos and the Sports Network is strictly prohibited coming up for the expose Brooks Wallach and Webster QB is old for one in the ball game flied to center field his first time up Scott delivers was a good split finger fastball strike one talking with Houston's pitching coach Jerry Walker and he was saying Scott has really come of age he pitched his last ball game was against the Giants and he said he really didn't have his good stuff but he still managed to get the win as Brooks gets Phil garner an opportunity to make the play that's one down and I think that's really a key for a pitcher to have some success is when he doesn't have his good stuff to go out there and still manage to win the ballgame might be a sign of maturing on his part is a pitcher of being able to know his own abilities at particular evening [Music] wallak takes low ball 1 he had a nightmarish year last year got off to a fair start was four and four in the middle of June then he was one in seven from that point on split finger fastball right there see the bottom just kind of fall out and it's a great pitch for pitchers who do master it doesn't give them any arm trouble not like a slider one or two to wallet last year the Astros top three as we mentioned Nolan Ryan Joe Niekro and Bob Knepper only one staff internationally had a better top three and that was the champion San Diego Padres in terms of total victories those three pitchers had 43 wins and they're on a pace that would put them ahead of that palm with the Astros was that fourth and fifth starter and this year Mike Scott can turn it around well the Astros are only playing 500 ball they've had a history of playing better in the second half of the season they sure have had some problems in the bullpen this year which they thought was going to be one of their strong points [Applause] - a - to Wallach one away top of the fourth inning 3 to 1 Houston lead build Olly and Frank DP know who the Astros and Bob Willis were depending quite a bit on have really not thrown well this year they've struggled just outside ball three three and two to wallet not the only one who has to well is Dave Smith yeah he's probably been their top reliever the last couple of years but this year in particular he has really out shown the others in the bullpen [Applause] bow back and there's that high fastball again it gets you thinking as a hitter see the pitch coming and your first reaction is it's going to be one of the split-finger basketballs it's going to drop into the strike zone or is it it'll be a straight fastball and stay up there so that's why we've seen a lot of hitters swinging at that high fastball it's been out of the strike zone that one's in the strike zone and Wallach hits it well the center field back board is bass no chance home run number six for Wallach dent centerfield it was a rope [Applause] Tim Wallach has been challenging the astrodome a homerun to centerfield in Game one of this series a little bit left of that one and this time right up the middle right over the 400 foot marker watch the arm extension on this swing by Tim Wallach ball is almost down the middle that's where your strength comes from Wallach a good low fastball hitter that ball was just below the belt it's not easy to hit home runs to centerfield here and he's do it and he's done it two nights in a row I'll tell you what that's doing for Tim Wallach it's giving him so much confidence not only to hit the home run dude but to prove to himself that he doesn't have to pull the ball one a no to Webster you don't see many home runs at centerfield here that probably would have made it with the old fence out and seven ball 2 2 Mitch Mitch had a bunt single in the 2nd inning stole second he's 1 for 1 there's a lion shot over the head of Cobell this will be extra bases bump replays it well off the wall down the right-field line and Webster goes on into second base he's 2 for 2 so Mitch Webster with talent from the right side and the left side hits tonight left-handed he is ready to play today put me in coach a little discussion on the mound ninis Capel Mark Bailey and Mike Scott going over strategy scott has given up some base hits he's had a hit two innings pitch ratio of good statistics this year he's pitched over 100 innings with 87 hits but tonight into the fourth inning he's given up six hits already so the Expos are seeing his pitches well and swinging the bats Mike Fitzgerald is old for one but he hit the ball hard in the second inning a good play by third baseman Phil garner to turn it into it out all strike to that jail we have mentioned it Scott rarely finishes what he starts and maybe this is the time of game he begins to tire good fastball swinging them in so antutu Fitzgerald one down Mitch Webster on its second base Houston has a three to two lead Fitzgerald asking Joe West to check the ball [Applause] crowd reacts a little bit to that there was some players earlier in the season when Scott was throwing that good split finger fastball that questioned whether it was a split finger fastball he thought he might have been putting some kind of a foreign substance on the baseball well actually when he reaches into the glove especially from this stretch here might be able to see his fingers splitting takes his grip like chasing a hi here three night sky Mike Scott does throw a couple of speeds of his split finger pitch if he spreads the fingers wider apart the pitch is a little slower then it's almost like a fork call with the fingers a little bit closer together he can get more heat on it to throw it a little harder my pitch is just a regular fastball right there it was out of strike zone strike call - Vicki Baylor it's a chance for Mickey to help himself he's got the tying run down at second base base hit might deliver the speedy Mitch Webster [Music] see what Mickey can do - so again number of Expo hitters chasing that high fastball out of the strike zone well sometimes you see it you see that pitch very well it's right in your eyes maybe you might be guessing fastball and you just go for it takes a little discipline lay off the pitch like that Oh to fastball again out of the strike zone [Applause] go back and get ready to pitch the Astros hit in the bottom of the inning in the fourth inning for the Expos they get a run on two hits big one a home run by Tim Wallach to straightaway centerfield no Houston errors and one runner was left on base after three and a half the Astros three the Expos to mrs. Expo baseball on TSN [Music] and we'll back looking at the standings in the National League East the Cardinals on top by game and a half Expos stay right there New York Mets four and a half out Chicago is five off the pace Philadelphia and Pittsburgh bringing up the rear in the West San Diego continues to play good baseball good steady ball out into West they're 5 ahead of Los Angeles Cincinnati 3 games over 500 Houston right at 500 and Atlanta and San Francisco Kevin bass who is leading off the fourth inning bass is one for one homered in the second inning his eighth of the year [Applause] and the Astros have been hitting more home runs as of late last year they only hit look at that stat only 18 home runs at home 61 on the road this year would Kevin bass homering that was their 21st already this year so they surpassed last year's total of course a lot of that due to the fact that fences have been moved in ten feet here in the dome and that makes it a fairer ballpark to hit course looking we're talking about that because we were not pitchers pitchers with bread rather haven't moved out 20 feet fences moved back and probably the mound made the move a little closer to home plate too we had a great thing the other day from left-handed pitcher with Seattle Mariners at Vandenberg [Applause] [Music] the Astros lead Florida to the switch hitting centerfielder showing some power from the right side Kevin bass has been up there twice he's gone deep twice that doesn't matter how far away those fences had been pulled in or pulled back that would would have been out of here into the seats [Music] the bass has hit nine home runs now and six of them right-handed he's only hit three left-handed [Music] what Bailey takes a call my job a switch hitter has voted the Astros Player of the Month for the month of June I'd say he had a pretty strong month he hit 400 at 5 homeruns 12 RBIs [Music] kind of an interesting situation with the two catchers that Bob Lewis has mark Bailey and Alan Ashby both switch hitters [Applause] [Music] because they both switch hitters [Applause] outside the Bailey three and one he does catch they've been calling a mash be with us mark and Ashby there's the stats they've been doing a good job Paul Florida Bailey the first [Music] and those stats by the way between Ashby n Bailey are better in just about every category than the other catcher in the National League if you compare them with a Tony pann yo Carter Terry Kennedy Larry Bird North now heads to the mound to talk to Mickey Mailer as dick Yvonne begins to step in Larry for narf pitching coach with the Expos Mike Fitzgerald joins the conversation the Astros lead at four to two as there is now action in the Expo bullpen right-hander Randy st. Clair [Applause] I'm gonna say the one thing about Alan Ashby he gets to catch and I'm sure he's thrilled about it he gets to catch Joe Niekro all the time he handles him a little bit better outside to five left at home run by Kevin bass Nicki mailers had trouble finding the strike zone [Applause] Bayley has no stolen bases and he won't be going anywhere unless I hit run Mikey on Vonn swinging and hits a high flyball to right field Andre Dawson with the catch one away [Applause] [Music] that'll bring up the pitcher Mike Scott [Music] Expo infield Tim Wallick is in a third of van Driessen will be charging well one down this could be a fun situation you see Wallach creeping in at third base throw the first something a lot of pitchers like to do when there is a possible bunt situation they'll throw over to first and then you can get an idea if the hitter is bunting because sometimes they square around as the pitcher makes the move there's the day and the play by Driessen over the law so a good sacrifice book by Mike Scott mark Bailey on to second base [Applause] and the Astro pitchers have been their own as far as hitting's concern and sacrifice bunts pitchers for the Astros last seven games have been hitting at a 350 Flint [Applause] they've also been dropping down a lot of good sacrifice bunt so you get those little things done you're gonna win some ball games Hill Doran takes a curveball it's a strike on one Doran 1/4 to Doran hitting 271 overall coming into tonight's game but hitting 302 left-handed only 219 from the right side he hasn't been his weight on the right-hand side of the plate so far they he's been a bit of a surprise with power7 home runs yet 8 1983 threats a career high for him he shouldn't pass that he had just for last year you think this goes back to bringing the fences in even the little geyser it's gonna help everybody [Applause] [Music] [Applause] at second base mark Bailey tell he's a catcher [Applause] he'll thorn one of the reasons the Astros don't they get dreidel tim wallach back to handle that pop fly and has to contend with the mound down to the bullpen that's a tough play so Tim handle it and play in the catch that's all for the Houston Astros in the fourth inning a run on one hit a home run by Kevin bass he's hit two in the ballgame no errors one left after for Houston four and the Expos - this is expo baseball on TSN Tommy Hutton Ken singleton in Houston checking the American League East sanding strano Blue Jays two and a half ahead of Detroit New York Baltimore trying to hang in there Boston seven and a half out and Milwaukee and Cleveland out in the West in America Leake California angel still hold a three game advantage Oakland has started to play excellent they've come come a long way there three out Kansas City Seattle is playing well their game over 500 followed by Chicago Minnesota and Texas so the white sox heading in one direction and the oakland a's heading in the other now on July 7th will be a baseball doubleheader Blue Jays against the Oakland A's four o'clock Eastern Time and the Montreal Expos against the Houston Astros right here in Houston seven o'clock Eastern Time so the Expos Astros game will follow immediately after the Toronto game and there's a good shot of how you can see where those fences were brought in the old fence with the is that's an orange line across you had to hit the ball over the orange line for it to be a home run now the Spence has moved in approximately 10 feet all the way around makes a lot easier to hit home runs this year you know what if it's a psychological thing though because so far all the home runs hit in this series would have been home runs regardless of if the fence had been moved in or not they've all cleared that would split finger fastball strike one - Timmy rains Timmy's 1 4 - doubled in the third flied out in the first cycle it could be psychological I know as a hitter you would like to see the fences as close as possible so even with them moving them in you're gonna get the feeling that you can go deep a lot easier to split finger fast balls in a row and a couple of good words strike two terrains [Applause] [Music] Mike Scott picking over this old to pitch Willie waste wonder will he come right at Tim Raines didn't waste a thing he went right at Timmy rains strutting out on three pitches back out number four for Scott [Music] well let's regroup strikeout number five don't get the opportunity to keep score inside very often Vance law the hitter he takes outside ball one Vance has a double in the ballgame and was a strikeout victim in the third inning one old hit well up the middle of it we're going grooves over and he's got it two up two down in the fifth [Music] [Applause] that ball might hit the side of the mound slowed it up on its way towards centerfield Doran was able to get over and make the play next Moses left a man on base in each inning had some opportunities haven't been able to cash in against Mike Scott one of those situations where you're on the bench and you have to keep saying keep him out there sooner or later we're gonna get him game clothes but if he starts doing that good pitch the split-finger fastball consistently he'll get tougher tell me we've seen that pitch more and more in the major leagues not only in the nationally but in the American League and I think it's an arm saber that's why you're seeing a lot of pitchers throw it is not as difficult to throw as a slider slider gives you basically a lot of elbow problems from that twisting motion when you release the ball you don't have that when you throw the split finger [Applause] chopper 4 door he's got it it's a three up three down inning for the Expos in the fifth no runs no hits no errors nobody left after four and a half the Houston Astros lead the Expos for two - this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Music] in Houston the Astros have a four to two lead over the Expos at 0 on the top of the fifth by the way the first three up three down inning or either pitcher Nikki Mahler and Mike Scott and the crowd getting into things here in Houston next expose drip special night will take place on Thursday July 18th the expose will be playing host to the same Houston ball club a 7:05 start all groups of 30 or more can purchase tickets for that July 18th game it's just half the regular price for all levels that's more fun and groups at Olympic Stadium so come see the Expo as an action on expose group special night July 18th against the Houston Astros [Applause] no fun going to a ballgame by yourself [Music] this will be sending up Cobell Garner and Cruz miss Cavell has a base hit two trips thirty-five-year-old veteran says he went to the Will Rogers School of hitting never met a pitch I didn't like he likes the hat 278 career hitter in the big leagues change ups outside Baltimore used in San Francisco Detroit and back when Houston again in outside two and older Edith Cavell [Music] Tigers lib came back to use two last year and hit 310 [Applause] Vicki Vale are working at the tow hitch again outside so Nikki's been outside with the first three pitches to Cobell thinking one and two this year within two point three eight earned run average and before his recall from Indianapolis Vickie was four and one down in the American Association well strike 3 1 Bell and Larry Herndon Larry heard it at the Detroit Tigers left fielder good friends and they felt that Herndon started to slump when the Bell got traded over the Easton [Applause] [Music] came a free agent left a tiger signed on with Houston they felt that's one of the reason why I heard and had to play down well the last couple years [Applause] the Bell had a heck of a rip that pitch hit it off the end of the bat and caught a bit of Joe West's mask he must be alright he's laughing it off let's check it out watch the backswing hold the they got to be tough to be a nationally gunfire Lansing right man smash from Larry Holmes Joe West has two careers by the way 3-2 pitch is fouled on the right-field line give it chases Dawson and it just goes out of play down stage three and two in the offseason Joe West is a country-western singer here's a many different eye clubs around Houston and pepper he's been in Houston superior in Las Vegas he's even cut an album Joe West has a couple of different careers going for him - league umpire touchy western singer maybe we can get him to sing a song for us between innings this one it's a little bit low but driessen's right there to scoop it up one down speaking of country-western singers expose play Houston Saturday night we'll have the game for you Sunday on Saturday after the ballgame here in the Astrodome right after the game the famous country rock group Alabama would be performing [Applause] - struck out in the first inning single in the third [Applause] Astros have been playing right at their 500 record their 39 and 39 and they've been playing at that against left-handers - 15 and 15 in South paws chained up filed off wanted to it look like Mahler might have given that changeup away sometimes when you slow up come around which emotion the hitter might look for the arm motion slowing down that's a dead giveaway you see something a little bit different in his motion and usually that will tell you that's an off-speed pitch means you might lean back a little further wait like guy like Mario Soto is so successful you know he has just lost five in a row but he has at good motion in the excellent changeup good curveball there but it's loaded in the dirt ball 2 2 & 2 to garner Lamar idea Mitchum is to keep hitters off-balance you can throw various pitches with the same motion feeds on all of them very tough to hit so I guess it's safe to say you have more on balance and I was [Applause] flattered by banner truck Jason he laid off the Kasserine - one down bottom of the fifth inning Astros for the Expos - six hits for each club [Music] Ruby Brooks and one thing about Phil garner care fees 25 or 30 thirty-six years old he gets down that line with everything he's got and he still runs well jose cruz snaps in jose one-for-one two RBIs had a sacrifice fly on the third Jose with a 312 batting average for thinly swinging at the first pitch sits it off the end of the bat but gets it onto the center field a broken bat single for jail crews folks are not booing that's the way they moving knowledge jose cruz here at Houston Astros haven't really bombed Mickey Miller they've been quite consistent they space therefore runs about as well as you can they scored one in each inning so far speaking of Jose forth internationally and hitting Willie McGee on top hitting 350 to Tommy Herr a couple of teammates battling out her batting 341 Tony Gwynn hitting 311 curveball a swing and a Miss strike one Montreal for to get into a fielder's choice and struck out [Music] [Applause] hide outside on a fastball 1 and 1/2 buffering Cruz now has five hits in the two games so far and after that toe injury he's just starting to swinging the bat like he's capable of doing Humphry capable but he fouls at inside basketball office not a good swing sad part of the plate monkey would average of 288 start out with st. Louis went over to San Diego then over to the Yankees and now on with Euston [Applause] zap pow director [Applause] nice play by a fan you'll and Texas like you said you have those nice cushion seats here in doors [Applause] [Music] we do get the feeling that you're at Theatre or concert it's always stranger dome stated it doesn't really feel like baseball to me in a way get up there and try and hit a fastball is like baseball it fouled back you know I think someday though that we may see more indoor baseball I would like to see if they're gonna build some more Stadium good roots I'd like to see him retractable I think that certain places like Houston you do need a dome fact that it is so hot and humid here I think people come to the ball game for relief places like Minnesota's receive strikeout there's a little curveball by Mickey Miller to strike out Jerry mumphrey will just go out down all right he's going down two times that strikeout number four for Mahler that's all for the Astros in the fifth inning no runs a base hit no errors one runner left after five in Houston in the dome the Astros lead the Expos four to two this is expo baseball on TSN and now let's go to this TSN sports break with Michael Landsberg [Applause] wanted to come back and talk a little about certain places you do need a door but all right good yeah or what might hold people down in places like Seattle and Minnesota when they get a nice day they don't want to come inside that's why the retractable dome is this better [Music] [Applause] [Music] good ol balls [Music] Tommy Hutton Ken singleton at Houston has some Houston Cowboys look on they may be going to the Calgary Stampede if they're not they can catch the action on TSN July 6 6 o'clock Eastern Time at July 7 3 o'clock Eastern Time the Calgary Stampede so a lot of cowboys here from Houston maybe heading north [Music] Tommy we were talking about the dome here in Houston people coming here for relief it's so hot and humid outside most of the summer places like Seattle and Minnesota I think that fans may be the reason why they're having problems would attendance especially in Seattle when they get nice days they don't want to go inside to see a ballgame you do need it of course because it overall weather picture strike one to Dan Driessen but I really feel you're gonna build a dome state and you should make a retractable so when you have that when you do have the nice days in the northern cities ground ball foul strike two when you do have the nice days in the northern cities that you can be able to see a ballgame out of doors so yeah that's one of the reasons the dome that is expected hopefully 1887 in Montreal will be a retractable don't because the same situation prevails in Montreal on a nice day of the summer fans in Montreal hate to be cooped up inside should there be a dome so they'd like to have that retractable dome and still enjoy the sunshine when it is out so I think with all the experimentation there has been with domes sooner or later as the years go by there'll be a perfect retractable dome that can be constructed for just a few billion dollars course then there's people who will say keep it outside and keep it on grass in the de poule way inside it's Grayson come inside he was ahead 1 & 2 I do Jason Driessen back off the plate and he hits his second batter of the ballgame Scott hit Andre Dawson in the first inning looks like it hits Danny just above the elbow on the right arm pitch up up 90 miles an hour and know he's gonna feel that tomorrow but I can only hope when it does hit you there that is above the elbow it's you on the elbow but then you might be in trouble I wanna bring a tying run to the plate expose get the leadoff man on tying run in the person of you V Brooks it comes back with that split finger fastball and it's out of the strike zone want to know what a Hubie as action now begins down to the expo bullpen [Music] case of the beginning we might come to the pitches Spartan the lineup all strike one on one to Jimmy Brooks [Music] you'll be batting 269 and of course those 21 RBIs leads shortstops in the NL JME shot right up the middle [Applause] turns a double-play so he be Brooks would like to have that swing back he got jammed on a good pitch from Mike Scott it had right off the middle font had time to get over and feel that step right on the bag and turn it into you be starting to swing and a split finger pitch just ran right in on him tailor-made for Dickie thon over the enos Cobell and that's the pitchers best friend the old double play bring up Tim Wallach wallak up there after hitting that shot to center field as last time at bat takes a strike from Scott Owen one I guess if the double play is the pitchers best friend a home run is his mortal enemy Wow now and in the expo bullpen Scott's ahead of wallet going to there's a shot of Floyd Yeomans who had started to heat up in hopes of the Expos getting down to that picture spot with the double plays cool down just a bit Yeomans in bullpen coach Joel Kerrigan Floyd Gilman's did quite a job in his first major league appearance got the call the Expos said Floyd we're going to bring you up to triple-a but on the way we'd like you to stop by Montreal to pitch against the first place st. Louis Cardinals and he did a heck of a job Floyd Yeomans yo is they call him yo worked sixty two thirds innings in that game against the Cardinals gave up six hits at five strikeouts and he was clocked in the 90 mile an hour range consistently Wallach pops this one up penis Cobell one-handed grab that's it for the expo in the 6th inning no runs no hits no errors nobody left 5 and a half innings here at Houston have been played and the Astros leave the Expos 4 2 2 this is Expo baseball on TSN [Applause] Carly O'Keefe sports game star for the Astros receives a beautiful Bulova quartz watch be sure to see the new Bulova quartz thin quartz accurate diamond set watches your Bulova jewelers is featuring Bulova diamond set time precise and a wide selection of styles at very affordable prices and remember every Bulova is backed by a two-year guarantee see your Bulova jeweller soon it's like a nice wash isn't it tough sure does wish I had one like that it's like it looks a lot nicer than one you got now alright on Sunday July 21st the Expos invites you to camera day at Olympic Stadium for the scheduled 1:35 game between the Expos and the st. Louis Cardinals we've invited onto the field to take pictures under your favorite Expo players photo taking sessions will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 so come to expose camera day on July 21st and return home with the Expos on film this promotion is being sponsored by these your Nelda Montreal and the Montreal Expos so it's always fun to get down on the field if you don't get that opportunity very often bring your camera for close-up shots at your favorite players Nevin baskets see steps in basket in the ballgame that's the first time in his career that he's hit two home runs to the game that's the first time an astro hitter this year has gone deep twice [Applause] quality [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] nikki is the third hitter up the Expos bad in the seventh so this could be is last inning work Houston leading four to two [Applause] fastball count stays over two [Applause] [Music] [Applause] first time out tonight third base for the expo our third baseman Tim Wallach was the Pick of the radio announcers in the national the all-star third baseman let's write the USA Today newspaper had a poll and pulled all nationally radio broadcasters and walk was their pick quite a few discrepancies in the voting from the bands between the fans and the announcers picked and who our picks were - of course dick Williams will be manning to inquire because his pod race nationally pitted last year he'll have some tricky choices to make as far as pictures and concern that's not an easy job because there are so many always seems to be somebody who's going to be left out Dawson will make the catch on this mark bayley flyball to out and he has to also make some picks as far as the non-starters course the starters are picked by the fans and the rest of the players are picked by dick Williams and coaches when he's going to have some tough picks one of his picks that he's made though as far as coaching is concerned is Bobby Willis he played high school baseball with dick Williams many many years ago Pasadena California so he's pickin Bobby Lilla says one of the all-star coaches [Music] [Applause] but Mitch Webster crosses in front of race and makes the grab that's Webster taking charge out in centerfield and it's the first time the Houston Astros have gone out in order in the sixth no runs no hits no errors nobody left after six Houston for Montreal - this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Music] houston astros four runs seven hits no errors the expose two runs six hits and no errors seventh-inning action topping out to Ken singleton bringing it to you right here on TSN also coming up on TSN the North America cup that will be taking place on July 6th 9 o'clock Eastern Time that's from Greenwood racetrack in Toronto harness racing three-year-olds there'll be a big $500,000 purse that's also the first of five live harness races coming up on TSN this summer hello Chicago Cubs dropped one to the San Francisco Giants Giants have beat the Cubs two in a row and buy two blue picking up win number five Scott Sanderson with the loss and I would have to think with 13 hits by the Cubs Ryan Sandberg might have kept his 16 game hitting streak alive don't know for sure we'll have to check it out but the Cubs drop it to the Giants [Music] Mike Scott will be facing Mitch Webster Mike Fitzgerald and the pitcher spot Webster two for two but single in the second inning a double down the right-field line in the fourth pitch batting 278 after a big night Thursday night two home runs here in the dome right hand has good swing at that pitch just got under it flyball for the right fielder Jerry mumphrey [Applause] young man's gonna help the expose a lot acquisition I was great into the conversation you had with him when he said yeah this is my favorite part Fitzgerald takes a pitch up high ball one mics oh for two it fall hard in the second garner tossed him out on a good play and then struck out in the fourth inning the x-bow catcher looking for his first hit takes it on the outside corner strike one pinch-hitter Steve Nicosia steps into the on-deck circle [Applause] and here comes a 1-1 pitch like Christ - what my buddy was thinking about getting a board via the button and took it for a strike 1 & 2 let's split finger pitch you take a look at Floyd you omens down the bullpen getting ready let's split finger pitch of Mike Scott it's worth the ride that he made to San Diego from Arizona sure is it gas money or airfare it's paid off you are retired in the seventh now we'll bring up the pitch hitter Steve Nicosia kosher hitting 175 coming into the night's game and he's been 2 for 11 off the bench in pitch hitting situation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the veterans team nicosia getting an opportunity to come off the bench and with Terry Francona left-hand hitter on the bench to her out nobody on base so Buck Rogers scoring with the right-hander against the right-hander Mike Scott Steve takes it low ball one want to know - a know with fastball Mike's got traded from the Mets to the Astros for Danny he updated hitting outfielder shades it seemed to work has done a fine job with the bed strawberries absence this year strawberry back now Mookie Wilson out donating to undergoing arthroscopic surgery to his right shoulder [Applause] Paul strike three wanted Nicosia one strawberry came back they sent Len Dykstra down to the minor leagues when Wilson went out for surgery he was gone for about two days he came right back to Bigley [Music] and he said we arrived in Tidewater to fillet affiliate of the Mets then found out he was coming back up to the to the Mets he said I've got my itinerary I know what flight to go on and everything know how to get to New York [Applause] and that is true when you we look at the Astros bullpen this is a right-hander warming up and it's true when you get the call to the big leagues and get there a little bit faster than when you go down popped up Dorn moves back he's got it and all of a sudden Mike Scott after the Expos hit him well through four has retired the Expos the next three innings without a base hit so Mike Scott settling down in the seventh the Expos go out in order after six and a half the Astros four and the Expos - this is Expo baseball on TSN [Applause] this day in baseball July 5th 1947 Larry Doby first black player to play in the American League and Larry Doby and yourself go back aways former batting coach with the Montreal Expos when you remember the Expos Kennedy's a man who taught me a lot about hitting and taught me about a lot about my own personal style of hitting he told me to rely on both hitting for average we take a look at Houston Astrodome and we're inside of that big bubble right there Larry Doby told me to rely on average and power he said not to rely on one over the other as we take a look at Floyd Yeomans young right-hander who has some gas warming up tell us about it here what Yeomans born in Tampa Florida 21 years old makes his home now in Fontana California took a look take a look at his numbers he is known for a blazing fastball up in the 90s [Music] well his strikeout 2 innings pitched ratio in Jacksonville double-a ball club of the Expos he had more strikeouts in innings pitched and I mentioned the game he pitched against the st. Louis Cardinals he went six and two thirds innings gave up six it's just two runs the Expos went on to win that game three to two though the youngster Floyd Yeomans on the pitch to Mike Scott [Applause] 1984 he also pitched in Lynchburg in a ball 39 in two thirds innings he struck out 45 and he did grow up and spend some high school days in California but as you said born in Florida his first year of high school he was a teammate of Dwight Gooden it'd be a toughness Club to play you're going as a high school player and having to face Gooden in yoga about a tough doubleheader unfit and they're good friends he talked to Gooden before he pitched in the ball game against the Cardinals boy coming over in that deal Gary Carter and the four young players that the Expos received in a deal maybe Brooks mermen Winningham Mike Fitzgerald Loyola's ball strike in the count is 3 and 2 to Mike Scott all them same time when they explore roster this year I would say anytime we got four young players them all on your team the same year [Applause] he needs to iron out it would be his control [Music] is Mike Scott [Applause] so again it's one of those trades that we've talked about a lot of time with Gary Carter going to the BET's Expo is receiving for young players that is the kind of trade that you can't really judge for a few years and see how the benefits are reaped by both clubs build or now switching over to the left side for the first time this is his strong side he's hitting 302 left-handed outside and the obits is bi adorned - nothing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] want to see strikes out of your picture there's a strike there's a good one too good fastball in his only other appearance at game against the Cardinals boy dick walked five batters in the six and 2/3 innings that he worked and lo three and wounded or Jorn was the lead leading hitter in Montreal for visiting player last year hit 444 in Montreal and five hits against the Expos it again [Applause] [Music] like Scott Bill Doran Larry Bird north quickly out to the man to try and settle down a youngster gonna see some more action in the expo bullpen there stirring around a little bit Randy st. Clair heading down the left-field line loosen up well Randy was up earlier in the ball game so he'll get it heated quickly take him to long as third-base coach Matt Galante gives some instructions to enos Cobell McIlhenny of formers all-americans second basemen at st. John's University think of st. John's in New York and Queens New York as a basketball school elitist Cobell up there nobody out runners at first and second what do you think Kalani told him get this ball down move the runners over [Applause] make sure he goes astray all one young right-hander struggling with his control right yeoman Scott out at second base [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well I've mentioned to him before the game with Bill gullickson scheduled to come off the disabled list on Monday this might be his last opportunity to pitch for the Expos or a little while at least all I think he has a good attitude about it he realizes that he does need some things to work on Bill gullickson as you said is scheduled to come off the disabled list and pitch against Braves on Monday [Applause] three innings in an exhibition game that the expo is playing on off Vegas their triple a ball club in Indianapolis well I did say if he got another chance to pitch we want to make the Expos think about sending him day huh [Applause] bell swinging away the bunt was not on he fouls it back and now he's got two strikes ball a two strikes the count [Applause] runners at first and second pitcher Mike Scott down at second 2nd baseman Bill Doran over at first nobody out in the bottom half the seventh inning twenty-one-year-old for Gilman's working to 35 year old eNOS Cobell County is missing inside with a good fastball he does the hard cuz he does that's just a matter of harnessing all that power being able to throw your fastball to spots a lot of the way that Dwight Gooden has learned to do that's the thing that goodness mastered so well Graner could be too first and the expose turned a double-play a big one Yeomans breathes a sigh of relief and Scott moves over to third but tore out the expo is turning their 76 double play of the year that splits him second in the National League and the combination of law and Brooks all together big play [Applause] we've got the clock on Floyd nice throwing it in the mid-90s DoublePlay ball was timed at 95 miles an hour see the radar gun just over to us left shoulder and that's where we're getting our readings from 95 we'll get a ticket if you dress like that the batter's Phil garner but a big DoublePlay ball to get the young guy out of some trouble so far it still has garner to contend with now back one-on-one scrap-iron is what they call garner well with that mustache there used to have that big flowing mush - they used to call him you 77 used to put like him - cartoon character anyway let's he's a tough out at the plate and he's battling some fast balls 1 & 2 to garner 2 outs bottom of the 7th Houston for Montreal 2 so Mike Fitzgerald tried to steer that pitch back into the strike zone when he caught it he kind of smashed it a little and it didn't fool Joel West trying to cradle the ball back into the strike zone on those close pitches maybe you get that call he figured during the course of the year good experience Petra [Music] Fitzgerald has experienced bring a few strikes into the strike zone and help her picture out [Music] now states to attune to Garner [Music] of course when you're a hitter and you take that pitch and it's few inches outside and you think it's a ball and you look back and you see the catcher holding it over the plate it's a little frustrated good hater swing and a Miss strikeout for Yeomans his first that's all for Garner that's it for the Astros in the seventh inning a couple of minute with leadoff blocks but boy Gilman shut him down in the seventh no runs no hits no errors one runner left after seven the Astros for and the Expo is 2 this is Expo Baseball on TSN and now let's go to TSN control for this sports break with Michael Landsberg [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we're gonna have some time here yeah well he was on base [Applause] [Applause] for 7:04 Houston to 6:04 the expose expose with two more chances off Mike Scott Tommy Hutton Ken singleton with the action here in Houston TSN will be bringing you the Cleveland Grand Prix that's July 7th at 12:30 Eastern Time that's first in a series of TSN car racing shows it'll be featured coming up some scores Philadelphia five to two over Cincinnati totally starting to play a little better baseball defending a rain delay in da ville' of Pittsburgh and the Mets defeating Atlanta six to one I wonder how long that one took at least we know it wasn't six hours in ten minutes the Dodgers over st. Louis in the eighth inning [Applause] over in the American League White Sox by five over the Indians Yankees leading Minnesota in the seventh and the Orioles have a lead by kicking over Kansas City by three [Music] Texas leaning Detroit in the seventh inning and here we are in the eighth inning Timmy Raines leading it off so you mentioned earlier chem that Mike Scott does not have a good track record of completing games just one complete game this year in 17 starts and he's into that territory right now there's about five of a hundred and twenty nine starts in the big leagues that he's completed [Music] [Applause] he misses outside think about Scot in this game is it since the fifth inning he's been working well he struck out the last two hitters in the fourth and it's not and just as I say that rains lines one up the middle should have set that two innings ago may sit for rains to lead off the eighth bidding Timmy now two for four he's going to say the last hit the Expos had off scot in the fourth that he was a double five miss Webster [Applause] [Music] the Expos have seven hits the Astros have seven and Houston now with action in their bullpen [Applause] brains going Bayley not in time Rainn steals it easily that's his 23rd stolen-base he's been thrown out just four times today rains would a good jump and by stealing this base he takes two double play away from Houston at least the ground ball double play now the Expos have another runner in scoring position get himself out of the way that hard fastball miss Cavell will talk with Scott Scott has already hit two batters tonight advanced law a little smile out of plate umpire Joe West mark Bailey the catcher reigns with 23 stolen bases still a long way away from Vince Coleman 55 stolen bases for Coleman so far man's trying to run his way to Rookie of the Year all three depends Mike's got now all of a sudden struggling one pitch away from putting the tying run on first base and the X goes with the part of the lineup coming up here's the three old Miss thang Oh [Applause] that was your basic get it over fastball not much on it knowing that Vance would be taking right down the heart of the plate see what this is here comes [Applause] he's walking Law Board reigns is on a second basis we could look at the Astros bullpen the left-hander on the left of your screen Jeff Calhoun the right-hander is Ron Mathis this will bring the Astros manager Bobby Lewis out to the mound and East made the motion to the bullpen he wants to write enter Ron Mathis to come into the ballgame so that is all for Mike Scott as he began the eighth inning facing leadoff man Tim Raines Timmy line two single up the middle and then promptly stole a second base and he lost Vance law and walked him and that was his first walk of the ball game Mathis comes in tonight [Music] much targets [Music] [Applause] 4.67 er when using the starter he started eight ball games fifty-four innings pitched he's given up 54 hits all right he's a right-hander and he'll be facing Dawson Driessen and Brooks Wednesday July 24th between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. the annual expose players wives Blood Donor clinic at Olympic Stadium players wives who worked very hard on this very worthy cause baseball personalities and yupi will all be there to greet you and each donor will receive a pair of tickets and appreciation of their participation so we invite you to show you generosity by joining the expose Blood Donor clinic at Olympic Stadium July 24th and that's at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. [Applause] I participated in that last year went out gave a pint felt pretty good afterwards them what did one week at all didn't paint already man [Applause] there you see Ron Mathis is record and he has his work cut out for him now [Music] some of the bigger guns in the Astro bullpen have been struggling Frank Lupino bill dolly both of them have been very reliable in the past but this year they've come up a little short it's kind of changed the thinking of manager Bob Willis he has to go out to the pen exactly because normally in a situation like this we might see de Pino or dolly and they have been struggling as you mentioned Lillis is gone with Ron Mathis he delivers to Dawson Andre takes his slider for a strike all in one Malthus started a game against the expose the last time the Expos were in Houston back in May May 14th started went seven innings picked up the win gave up just four hits and no runs he's familiar doing the x-bow hitters [Applause] right they're making a good play on the chopper up the middle by Andre Dawson and as the expose turned a double-play the previous inning the Astros turn a big one right here for them tailor-made Doran playing through the middle in a double play situation the ball wasn't hit too hard to hopper right over the head of Mathis going right on the spot tags a bag quick the roll over the first base on the double play and Andre Dawson now you call it a pitchers delight and Mathis got it right there Griese in the hitter chops the first pitch foul oh and one on that double play Tim Raines moves over to third base [Music] so they're not quite out of the inning yet laughs this has been a spot starter for Houston and he's come in and done a job [Applause] stand race in the ground a Cabella person entering the ball game of go buddy out runners at first in a second Ron Mathis himself out of the inning help Mike Scott and that's it for the Expos in the 8th no runs a base hit no errors one left after seven and a half Houston for Montreal - this is Expo baseball on TSN it's the same back in Houston the Astros have a four to two lead over the Expos coming up in Ken singleton we moved to the bottom of the eighth inning always a lot of fun at the stadium come and see these chevalier O'Keefe in action at Olympics day of Saturday July 27 6:30 p.m. prior to the expo Cincinnati Reds game the chevalier O'Keefe will be on the field entertain you with a friendly softball game against media personalities total miss of July 27th game chevalier O'Keefe night at Olympic Stadium and there are a lot of fun to watch a great group of guys they do a lot of fun things with that softball have a lot of fun out the stadium Bobby Lewis as with the Astros organization for a long time of the Houston Astros second baseman and shortstop [Music] [Applause] in the early days maybe when they would call the Houston colt 45 [Music] replaced bill Burton when Burton was managing the Astros back in 1982 jose cruz lining the first pitch foul on one [Applause] Cruz has a perfect evening going single in an RBI and the first inning a sacrifice fly on a river in the third and a single in the fifth Jose tuning it up and not files it back on to so you know when the other hitters came back to the bench they thought [Applause] this guy's hurry [Applause] right on the outside corner good pitch by Ullman's Cruz back number two for Floyd [Music] this particular pitch Yeomans has excellent control of his fastball Mike Fitzgerald sitting outside and you might have seen a much dead glove over the outside corner a little bit it's right at but three fouls that off we talked about the catcher's pulling the pitches back in he's a good example right there [Applause] 1 and 1 to Jerry mumphrey Montreal 4 3 2 a fielder's choice he struck out twice Humphrey now hitting left-handed hitting 285 from the left side came in tonight's game hitting only 233 there right-handed curveball by Ole Miss if he gets that over with consistency with the fastball he won't be in Indianapolis long and we're not even sure if he's going down for Syria [Applause] while on and missed and it's all for mumphrey I got number three for yoga's three in a row struck out for Varna - in the seventh inning [Applause] [Music] oh and radar gun clocked that last pitch at 97 miles an hour [Applause] temperature's going up in here Rahim [Music] 9 this year six of them become right-handed but after hitting those first two right-hander tonight he has an opportunity to hit him from both sides of the plate now he steps over to the left side like 1/2 and 1/2 Kevin bass you can hear that glove popping all the way up here [Music] confidence for humans you took something off that twenty-one years old will come with heat now 3-1 pitch [Applause] line shot to right field Kevin bass with two home runs he's [Applause] that's the first hit off Yeomans emailer worked six innings gave up seven hits four runs had four strikeouts in a walk fast is the threat to steal as Mark Bailey jumps over the other side of the plate another switch hitter pitch out [Applause] laughs is stolen eight out of nine this year [Applause] that's another thing experience on the pitch out Yeomans really kind of gave it away a smart runner Kevin bass is a smart runner you can pick that up you're not going to go you know it's a pitch up one and one to Bailey the fast pal strike two Bayley old for two of the ball game [Applause] once he pitched there goes bass a out throw in the dirt Kevin bass [Applause] [Music] this is a pitchout but it really isn't a good one it's kind of low and hard to handle for Mike Fitzgerald and bass is off and running even so Fitzgerald gets off a pretty good throw look at that throw now when you're moving has a catcher that is a tough play you see where Mike had to throw the ball from downside arm he normally doesn't throw that way only because of where that pitch out was and he still almost got him high fly ball Andre Dawson he's got it that's all for the Astros in the 8th inning they get a base hit there were no errors and one runner left on base after 8 the Houston Astros lead the Expos 4 to 2 we'll go to the ninth inning one more chance for the Expos this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Music] [Applause] well we move for the last chance for the expose top of the ninth-inning expose trail the Astros by a tube and coming up to bat for Montreal he'd be Brooks Tim Wallach and Mitch Webster we looking at some final scores Giants over the Cubs by 6 the football score Philadelphia beating Cincinnati and they've won two of two in a row New York Mets over the Braves six to one [Music] and the Dodgers lead the carts or to one that's good news for the Expos in the American League Chicago White Sox over the Indians by five Minnesota losing or trailing the Yankees in the ninth inning Baltimore by three over Kansas City and Texas still has a three-to-one edge over Detroit in the eighth-inning and a very partial score out in California by the way speaking of California they had the largest crowd of the major leagues on their 4th of July celebration the Angels had over 62,000 fans Anaheim Stadium on July 4th Jimmy Brooks takes a pitch from Ron Mathis and it's a ball one and oh he'll be looking for his first base hit the ball game we'll get a bit of strike one one in one day you be you'd be fly it out in the second inning grounded out in the fourth and hit into a double play in the sixth hit well off the glove of Dickie thon he'll be hit the ball right on the nose and Dickie thon had trouble coming up with it that'll be an error to the shortstop and even though it was hit well it should have been caught by thon and I think all the problems that Nicky has had after being beaned by Mike Torrez not only has he had problems at the plate is iSight coming back he's had problems in the field with depth perception [Music] now the tying run at the plate the presence of Tim Waller it's just about to say that two great minds and one thought right go ahead I'll let you say it knit so you don't feel bad no that's okay [Music] of course we get a lot of question on those two great minds of our handy crew down to the truck Brian Schechter Billy McCoy I think there are the two great minds later on the show foul ball out of play mark bayley coming back count even so Wallach now wanted one Tim hit his sixth home run of the year in the fourth inning straight away centerfield happy Astro fans here in Houston somebody got a souvenir Sika bell playing behind rooks at first big curveball dismisses ball two two and one nobody out we're at the top of the ninth inning and the expose trail Houston by two or to choose the score oh wait 3 & 1 Astro outfield very deep wallack hitting anything over their heads for extra bases if it goes over their heads they want it to go out of the ballpark [Applause] with pitch to hit Wallach as a good [Music] Club three here good pitch to hit these are tennis ball to right-field just got a little over [Applause] again I think the confidence of tip hitting those two home runs to straightaway center field sometimes we may see tip try to pull that when well with it just got under where's the case of playing in an indoor stadium you have no breeze to help you of course you don't have a breeze to hinder you at the plate either but if you have a breeze blowing the right-field wall might carry you see must have trouble in San Francisco it's Webster might not be as strange as it seems you know they're playing most of your games or half of their games indoors and they go to a stadium an outdoor stadium or you have the wind they can contend with and you have a lot of Sun a lot of day games Chacarita [Applause] easy at first [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one down picking up a save and helping Mike Scott earn a victory [Applause] let's score Dodgers and st. Louis in st. Louis is now final and the Dodgers have defeated the Cardinals four to one so so the Expos not rally Terry Francona steps in to pinch-hit Expos remain a game and a half behind st. Louis Francona pinch-hitting for Mike Fitzgerald Terry is 3 for 18 off of the bench pinch-hitting is not an easy job a few times I had to do it in my career see where you could not make a decent living I couldn't at least doing it it's not easy I did a lot you got to be aggressive Terry is and Pops's spits down the line over for it is [Applause] over the full cleanings that over-the-shoulder catch the retire pitch hit at four that's all for the expose in the night no runs no hits it was one Astro error oh that's the final score here in Houston Astros defeat the Expos for two to four runs eight hits one error for Houston two runs seven hits no errors for the Expos this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Applause] [Music] [Applause] palates a final in the Astrodome in Houston the Astros have defeated the Montreal Expos for two to four runs eight hits one error for Houston two runs seven hits no errors or the Expos winning pitcher Mike Scott his record is now seven and four the loser is Mickey Miller his record goes to 1 and 3 Ron Mathis picked up his first save of his career on in relief of Mike Scott big hitter of the day for the Houston Astros Kevin bass switch hitter had three base hits two of those home runs coming off Mickey Miller hitting those from the right side so Kevin bass doing most of the offensive damage for the Houston Astros as they have defeated the Expos 4-2 to here in Houston this is Expo Baseball on TSN [Music] expos baseball on TSN brought to you by Carlino keep sports bringing the sports world home to you and buy petrol canada dealers and agents across canada putting canada first [Applause] the expose on TSN is a production of the Sports Network and is protected by copyright any use of this broadcast without permission is prohibited are calling O'Keefe sports game stars for the expose with a couple hits and some fine plays in left-field Timmy Raines and for the Astros three hits two of those home runs Kevin bass the final score once again Houston for Montreal to the winning pitcher is record now seven and four right-hander Mike Scott our next telecast will be coming right here from the Astrodome Sunday July 7th 7 o'clock Eastern Time the Expos and the Houston Astros so from indoor baseball in Houston I'm Tommy Hutton for Ken singleton saying so long [Music] [Music]
