hello I'm Gayle hunt a quiltmaker instructor and the author of quilt works across Canada 11 contemporary workshops which is now a collector's item welcome to my workshop as a former home economics teacher who loves traditional as well as contemporary quilt making techniques I prefer my quilts to have a soft hand and drape one of the techniques I love to use is what we call confetti technique in quilt works across Canada I use it to create realistic botanical subject matter in many of my quilts and clothing without stiffness today I'll give you a very short demonstration of the basic confetti technique first go to your sewing room garbage and pull out any fabric bits especially in the colors you want for your piece re discard any that have a different colored back the frayed edges from straightening your yardage and the tangled threads from the washing machine make particularly nice confetti dryer lint and yarns suit some subject matter such as rock depending on your quilts and use you may also choose paper or sequins which cannot be allowed to get wet or burnt place your wonderful scraps onto your cutting board in like colored piles like an artist's pallette now cut it all to bits with your rotary cutter grass shapes leave shapes smaller foliage for trees or meadows further away you might piece a background and plan your confetti plants for the dark foreground fabric I like to prepare my confetti sandwich on the ironing board protect the ironing board with a piece of paper under the background confetti powder is a very fine heat sensitive adhesive powder you can get it from me check out my website for contact information Gale hunt comm sprinkle a light dusting of confetti powder over the foreground to area you might choose to fussy cut some elements such as a tree trunk then drop or place the confetti on it starting with the subject matter further away include dark shadows with mixed dark confetti then place the more brightly colored confetti over top when you're satisfied with the arrangement sprinkle another light layer of the confetti adhesive powder over next place a piece of dark nylon tool over the landscape remove the protective paper from beneath and cover with a Teflon or silicon ironing sheet with your iron at about a wool setting hot enough to melt the confetti powder but not so hot that the nylon tulle melts iron the whole assemblage now you can freely move your landscape to the sewing machine for free motion embroidery drop your feed dogs and switch to a free motion presser foot I usually start with a black thread to create shadows then I switch to other colors depending on my subject matter you can make flowers grasses bushes trees or whatever your imagination comes up with you may need to use a lightweight stabilizer on the back of the embroidery depending on my subject matter I may switch to other colors after your machine embellishment rip off any of the nylon tool that is not stitched on and you're done for more information about my classes on realistic pictorial construction surface design image transfer and other quilt making techniques please contact me I am happy to travel to your guild conference or shop to teach I have a selection of lectures for guild programs as well for my teaching schedule please refer to Gale hat dot-com and thanks for your interest
