hello guys and welcome to this new tutorial where I'm gonna show you how to create beautiful and realistic sidewalks in Unreal Engine 5. you can use Mega scans to follow along with this tutorial but I'm also going to show you how to create custom sidewalks to fit just your needs using the free assets I put in the description before we get started with the tutorial I want to thank you very much for your support on my last video it really means a lot to me in fact I created this demo intersection using only the free assets and techniques from my last video and as you can see you can take this really far okay so in order to create the sidewalks we're going to use the same Unreal Engine feature that we use for the last video splines okay so you want to create a new spline by control clicking and you kind of want to follow the control points of your rows of your road so kind of like that and then next one here sometimes you have to click away from the other spline because the program kind of gets confused or something so now that you have a rough shape of your sidewalk you're gonna go to hold on sometimes this little so you're gonna go to select all segments and you're gonna first of all apply a spline mesh so just like we did with the roads we can draw a shape that will then be populated by a sidewalk mesh in this case I'm using the modular concrete median from Mega scans if you load this in you'll have the same issue we had with the roads last time so we're gonna go to scale and we'll have to adjust that and for this mesh at least for me for my project it was 0.3 that gave me the best results so you're gonna put everything to 0.3 the last one also yeah so that's pretty good now next thing you have to do is you have to match the rotations of the control points so that the sidewalk can run parallel to your road this is very easy we can just go to the road control Point go to rotation May copy and then paste all right then we're gonna do the same here copy whoops and paste and this one we're gonna align this one to this control point so we're gonna do here copy and paste so here you have a little problem and that is that so these control points are offset by exactly 180 degrees so they're pointing in exactly the wrong direction but if you set your grid to 90 you can easily change this and make this the right direction it almost does it automatically as you can see very nice very easy now we take the last control point and we're gonna do the same thing with the match rotations copy and paste now again you have to do this with the 180 very good so next thing you have to do is you make this you have to move the points so they actually run parallel to your road and they're not like offset like they are now so you're just gonna drag them over here and you can use the white line as a guide so when it's just cutting through the line kind of you know that it's more or less parallel to the road just like this okay so this is already aligned pretty well just gonna take this last one real quick put it here here and put it down a little bit yeah just like that so you probably have to tweak a little bit so you probably have to tweak the points a little bit to make them really match um so just have to go over and this maybe make it a little bit more like that you really it just have to play around with the with the notes and the scales and stuff like that until you have it matching perfectly all right so as you can see we now have a sidewalk and it was very easy to create but what if we need a sidewalk for let's say a more rural area like for example I did here see we don't have the concrete but we have instead we have a dirt texture that's uh blending with the landscape that's where my free downloads in the description come in okay so the free downloads consist of a curb model textures for this curb model and also a subdivided plane which is very important you can just use a normal Unreal Engine plane because it doesn't have enough vertices to really Bend so I just made this really quick in blender but you don't have to do this I put it in the description you can just download it so you that these three things you need and you're gonna go into the material that is automatically created for the curb and you're gonna make sure that you have all these other textures because at the start it's just going to be the text Dom a texture sample but you want to have all the textures in there um yeah so just I think you know how that works I'm just going to show you how it should look like uh yeah feel free to pause and import everything but I'm gonna move on hit save all right all right so what you need to do to make your custom curve is you're going to move drag in this curb model uh yeah go out of landscape mode um move it up a little bit so we have a better better view all right so first of all we're gonna make this twice as big and second of all we're gonna take our subdivided plane and we're gonna drag this here make sure it has the same rotation it should have zero rotation you also want to scale this up maybe to three no let's put it to six this is a little better and now what you have to do you have to make sure that um wait hold on so now you have to have to make sure that this lines up perfectly with the edge of the curb because otherwise you will have gaps in your spline and you don't want that so yeah this is still not perfect let's go to the other side see how it is here yeah no that's that's this is a problem see this is offset by a very tiny amount but this is going to result in gaps so we have to fix this by just um very carefully kind of moving this plane and weights all right actually we're gonna probably gonna use the this one so we have a little bit more control and yes almost almost yes this is perfect as you can see this lines up perfectly no gaps whatsoever we look at the other side and we get the same no gaps lines up perfectly now just put this back into place and yeah so you already have somewhat of sidewalk but you still oh yeah by the way let me just um make this a little bit smaller on this axis and also on this axis because uh so I feel like it's a little bit too you just have to find out what works best for you scale wise but I like it to be a little bit more thin I think it looks a little bit more realistic but yeah now we have to assign a texture to this plane and you can really use any texture you want you could use like some Standard Concrete texture like this this is not a good resolution but I think you know what I mean you can use any texture you want but I'm gonna use um a texture that I got out of the materials so I made like a little material out of the textures that come with the auto material so I'm just gonna take this and as you can see it's the same material as the ground so this is very good when we want to blend our sidewalks with the landscape so right now these are two separate meshes and you can't really put them into one spline so what you want to do is you want to select both these meshes you're going to go up to actor and then you're gonna make merge actors and click on merge and you're gonna I'm just gonna call this sidewalk free you can call it whatever you want but it's going to create a new mesh out of these two meshes okay so now that you have your custom sidewalk mesh you can use this in whatever way you like so if you want to for for example replace this sidewalk with a custom sidewalk just have to go into the mesh section look for your custom sidewalk sidewalk 3. boom now of course this is not perfect you still have to adjust some things like for example here take y-axis and then you have to invert it so it's the right yeah now it faces in the right direction but you still have to adjust the center to minus 200 I think is a good no that's too high let's say minus 100 what was that yes this looks good so what you can do now is you can just go into landscape Scopes and then you can plant this with your landscape maybe make the strength make it a little bit more smoother um the radius yeah let's go up a little bit okay so now you have a pretty smooth transition between your street and your landscape and now you can also repaint some grass on here to make it look a little bit more less Dead with all the with all the dirt draw some here you'll also have some foliage spawning with that so this also helps with blending the two things together and as you can see this looks pretty good and it looks pretty realistic so yeah all right all right that was it for this video I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you learned something and if you did feel free to let me know by liking the video and subscribing to my channel and maybe sharing this video with someone who also wants to make very nice sidewalks just like this um so yeah I hope I see you in the next video subscribe if you don't want to miss that next video and yeah have fun with the free download and create some very nice sidewalks until then bye bye
